Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Richard Madden, and Shailene Woodley in Killer Heat (2024)
6 Movies to Watch if you liked ‘Killer Heat’ on Prime Video
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Richard Madden, and Shailene Woodley in Killer Heat (2024)
Prime Video’s “Killer Heat” is a new mystery thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Nick Bali, a private investigator. It shows Nick traveling to Greece to investigate the shocking death of a wealthy man named Leo Vardakis. Nick is hired by Penelope, Leo’s identical twin brother’s wife. The film takes place entirely on a scenic island and relies on the moodiness of the setting as it unravels new bits of information. It seems heavily inspired by the Hollywood noir classics that redefined the genre conventions decades ago. Fans of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and movies like “Killer Heat,” featuring slow-burn mysteries, can check out this thriller on Prime Video.

This 2024 film is based on Jo Nesbø’s short story – “The Jealousy Man.” The film is directed by Philippe Lacôte, known for directing “Night of the Kings,” a critically acclaimed fantasy drama. Besides Gordon-Levit, the film also stars Shailene Woodley and...

Killer Heat Review: Prime Video's Noir Crime Drama Breathes New Life Into Genre With Style & Grit
Image
Killer Heat beautifully unravels a murder mystery in a timeless, lovely film with a brilliant twist. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars opposite Shailene Woodley in this captivating film which sees a family fall apart while evoking a feel of a noir crime drama. Gordon-Levitt is excellent as the private investigator/narrator of the story, and as the mystery comes undone, the clever narrative shines brightly.

Killer Heat Tops Prime Video Chart, but Crashes on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Crime drama Killer Heat is destroying Prime Videos movie chart, while being in return destroyed by both critics and audiences. Based on the Jo Nesb novella The Jealousy Man, the highly anticipated adaptation comes with some strong talent, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Richard Madden, but like so many streaming successes, has been completely crushed when it comes to its reviews.

Directed by Philippe Lacte, Killer Heat finds Madden playing the dual role of twin brothers Elias and Leo, who are caught in a violent love triangle with Penelope Vardakis (Shailene Woodley). When Leo is said to have died in a climbing accident, Penelope enlists troubled detective Nick Bali, known as the Jealousy Man of the novellas title, to discover the truth about the death. Set on a remote Greek island, the movie comes with plenty of Mediterranean sun and picturesque backdrops, but that kind of thing doesnt help a good...

Killer Heat Review: Joseph Gordon-Levitt leads a lifeless neo-noir
Image
Plot: A thrilling, contemporary mystery in classic noir style, Killer Heat follows private eye Nick Bali, an American expat in Greece, hired to investigate the supposed accidental death of young shipping magnate Leo Vardakis on the island of Crete. The victim’s sister-in-law doesn’t believe the official police report. But what exactly happened to Leo, and why? Despite the sun-drenched beauty of its exotic Mediterranean locale, Nick finds darkness at every turn: where the rich and powerful Vardakis family rule like gods, where jealousies run deep, and anyone could be a suspect.

Review: The hard-boiled detective movie has been a trope since the early days of cinema. The term “noir” has taken on a meaning in modern film that has turned into a cliche itself. If you picture the genre in your mind, you likely conjure up fedoras, femme fatales, cigarettes, cocktails, dastardly villains, and lots of gunfire. The...

‘Killer Heat’ Movie Ending Explained: Did Penelope Kill Leo For Money? Is Elias Dead?
Image
Killer Heat’s ending was all about finding why [Spoiler Alert] one of the twin brothers killed the other one. What exactly was the motive, and who convinced them to take such a step? Nick Bali (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a private detective who often talked to himself like Watchmen‘s Rorschach, always knew that Elias (Richard Madden) had something to do with the accidental death of his twin brother, Leonidas (or Leo). It was the reason why he started investigating the Vardakis family as soon as he arrived at the isolated island of Crete. Elias’ wife, Penelope (Shailene Woodley), who met Leo and Elias during their time at Oxford University, knew the secret behind the mysterious murder, but she wanted someone else to expose Leo so that he couldn’t pin the entire blame on her. Yes, it wasn’t Leo who died that day; instead, it was his brother, Elias, the mom’s favorite.

Niamh Algar is a Film Censor in First Trailer for British Horror 'Censor'
BAFTA Awards 2023
"You'd be surprised what the human brain can edit out when it can't handle the truth..." Magnet Pictures has debuted the first full trailer for the British horror film Censor, marking the feature directorial debut of editor / filmmaker Prano Bailey-Bond. This initially premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, earning mixed reviews - Zofia wrote a positive review of it for the site. After viewing a strangely familiar "video nasty" for her job, Enid, a meticulous film censor, sets out to solve the past mystery of her sister's disappearance, embarking on a quest that dissolves the line between fiction and reality. It's set back in a different time in the UK when horrible horror films were edited by censors, and the plot is about one censor who gets sucked into the videos' darkness. Niamh Algar stars as Enid, joined by Michael Smiley, Nicholas Burns, Vincent Franklin, Sophia La Porta,...

‘The Little Drummer Girl’: Watch a Dangerous Plan Come Together in AMC Series
Sometimes, the mark of a good spy story is what gets said without any words at all. Such is the case for the new AMC limited series “The Little Drummer Girl.”

From director Park Chan-wook and based on a novel from legendary genre master John le Carré, the six-part series follows a 1970s London actress named Charlie (Florence Pugh) who gets dragged into an international espionage project by a handsome, shadowy figure named “Peter” (Alexander Skarsgård).

In an exclusive clip below, you can catch a glimpse of the danger that both Charlie and Peter face as they carry out their specific mission. It’s the kind of meticulous, ratcheted-up tension, done in a way only Park Chan-wook can. It may not have the technicolor wardrobe that blankets so many of the scenes in the series, but it still has that unmistakable atmosphere that only the ’70s can offer up. Toss...

PBS' 'Masterpiece Mystery': Inspector Lewis returns
If you missed last week's premiere of the new batch of "Inspector Lewis" episodes on PBS' "Masterpiece Mystery," you weren't alone. Pledge drives pre-empted "Counter Culture Blues" in some markets, including Chicago.

But while you still have time to catch that episode online (PBS.org), don't miss Sunday's second episode, "The Dead of Winter" (9 p.m. Eastern, Sept. 5, but check your local listings).

The "Lewis" franchise is an extension of the popular "Inspector Morse" series, after the death of both the character Morse and the actor who played him, John Thaw. Thames Valley (UK) Police Inspector Robert Lewis (Kevin Whately) is out from under the shadow of the legendary Morse and has his own No. 2, the enigmatic Sgt. James Hathaway (Laurence Fox).

In "The Dead of Winter," we learn a little of Hathaway's past when he and Lewis are dispatched to an Oxford country estate that may have been the scene of a murder.
