Featuring a great premise from which to build a franchise, YouTube creators Danny and Michael Philippou’s directorial debut Talk To Me is a refreshing retread, imagining tantalizing “micro-possessions” that get stronger the more you use them. The premise is simple enough: a possessed hand that seems to have been passed down for generations opens a supernatural portal to the unknown, which can offer a brief moment of clarity before it inflicts unthinkable violence. As far as the violence goes, the film checks all the boxes with a murder/suicide opening sequence at an out-of-control house party, setting the affair in motion without giving away what’s to come.
Grounded in what at times seems like a quiet, nuanced family drama we’re introduced to Mia (Sophie Wilde) and Riley (Joe Bird). Mia has become a close family friend and a second sister to both Riley and Bff Jade (Alexandra Jensen...

The first clip from Talk To Me, an upcoming supernatural horror film from the producers of 2014's critically acclaimed The Babadook, has been revealed, teasing a teen party gone wrong as a portal to the supernatural world is inadvertently opened. The film follows a group of friends who learn to conjure spirits using a recently discovered embalmed hand with unexpected powers. The thrill of their paranormal adventures soon turns sinister when they find that it is far easier to open the door to the spirit world than to close it.
Ahead of Talk To Me's debut at Sundance Film Festival later this month, Deadline has unveiled a first look at the upcoming horror from the producers of The Babadook. The clip teases the sudden and dark turn the film takes when teenager Mia gives in to pressure from her friends and conjures a spirit. What starts as a seemingly harmless...

Holy hell this year’s SXSW Film Festival isn’t messing around.
The official lineup has just been revealed and it’s a banger, starting off with a special screening of Evil Dead Rise!
In addition, they have several prominent horror titles that will premiere as part of the Midnighters program, including the Sundance hit Talk to Me and the surprise sequel to Becky, The Wrath of Becky!
“Midnighters don’t need to be exclusively horror films, they just need to perk you up and get your blood pumping,” said Peter Hall, Film & TV Festival Programmer. “That’s why this year’s SXSW Midnighters class is a mix of horror, bone-crunching action, and mind-melting genre hybrids. Some of them introduce new, terrifying lore to the canon of suburban horror movies, some will worm around in your brain like thoughts you can’t shake, but all of them will make you...

‘Santa Claws’ – A Sleazy, Cheesy Holiday Oddity from ‘Night of the Living Dead’ Co-Writer John Russo

While George A. Romero was able to parlay the success of Night of the Living Dead into a career in the film industry, co-writer John A. Russo never quite found his footing. Any filmmaker would be lucky to have a movie a fraction as impactful as Night of the Living Dead on their resume, but Russo’s cinematic imprint beyond that was minimal.
In addition to publishing numerous books and producing The Return of the Living Dead and the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead, Russo wrote and directed a handful of independent horror movies over the years. Although they failed to reach a wide audience, he generated a few low-budget cult classics, including the 1996 Christmas slasher Santa Claws.

It’s time for a new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series – and this one looks back at a “cheesy zombie movie” that I consider to be one of the most purely entertaining films ever made, 1988’s FleshEater (get it Here). To find out all about FleshEater, check out the video embedded above!
FleshEater was directed by Bill Hinzman, who played the Cemetery Ghoul – the first flesh-eating zombie ever to grace the screen – in George A. Romero’s classic Night of the Living Dead. Hinzman also wrote the screenplay with Bill Randolph, crafting the following story:
Just when you thought the dead were buried… Experience your most dreadful nightmare become reality as an innocent outdoor sleepover becomes an endless night of sheer terror! Eddie and eight of his friends planned to spend one night on Spencer’s farm. What they hadn’t planned on was...

There’s Always Vanilla, Season of the Witch, and The Crazies, made between Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, showcase the extraordinary versatility and dynamism of this irreplaceable American auteur… Three films from the late, legendary horror director, George A. Romero, showing that although he might have defined zombie cinema, it didn’t define him. George A. Romero – “Between Night and Dawn” will be released on Blu-ray October 23rd from Arrow Video
There’S Always Vanilla (1971)
Young drifter Chris and beautiful model Lynn embark upon a tumultuous relationship which seems doomed from the outset.
Season Of The Witch (1972)
Joan Mitchell is a bored housewife whose dissatisfaction with her humdrum life leads to an unhealthy interest in the occult.

With 8-years olds watching The Walking Dead today with Mom and Dad today, it’s hard to convey just how grossed out and appalled people were when Night Of The Living Dead started popping up on movie screens back in 1968. Variety wrote back then: “No brutalizing stone is left unturned: crowbars gash holes in the heads of the living dead, monsters are shown eating entrails, and – in a climax of unparalleled nausea – a little girl kills her mother by stabbing her a dozen times in the chest with a trowel.” Yep, Night Of The Living Dead...

Are zombies really that memorable? When you think about it, today’s undead munchers are not exactly an interesting crowd since all they do between meals is wander around in a trance. The pre Romero vegetarians are even worse, as they spend most of their time under the thumb of a zombie master, although on the odd occasion they do rebel against their tyrannical leader.
Zombie movies are a dime a dozen these days, and apart from a few moderately successful variations, they haven’t progressed beyond the flesh-eating antics of Night of the Living Dead (1968). But on the odd occasion a couple of zombies stand out from the faceless crowd of walking corpses, and what some these ghouls lack in personality, they make up for in other ways.
So here’s a list of ten memorable zombies that stood out for me, as an avid horror movie fan.

“They’re coming to get you Barbara.” Spoken in Boris Karloff style amongst the tombstones Johnny’s kidding line to his sister was the last moment of innocence before the siblings and viewers alike are assaulted by the unrelenting terror of George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead.
The horrord of that classic mobir began in the cemetery with actor/assistant camera operator Bill Hinzman’s unforgettable living dead shamble, but as fans of the film know, there would be more fear, social commentary, and hungry zombies to be found at the farmhouse down the road.
Showing the film’s progressive link from the cemetery to the farmhouse and even incorporating the moon hanging above that fateful, horrific night when the dead got their feet back under them, artist Timothy Pittides’ new black and white poster for 1968’s Night of the Living Dead superbly captures the malicious mood of Romero’s classic film.

Unless you’ve been in a coma or trapped in a subterranean bunker, you’ve seen that zombies are a pretty big deal in games these days. Resident Evil was like Bill Hinzman in that lonely graveyard in Night of the Living Dead, the precursor to a flesh-hungry mob that’s infested every facet of gaming from cartoony strategy titles (Plants vs. Zombies) to multi-million dollar Fps franchises (Call of Duty). Except Resident Evil was far from the first…there were games that featured the living dead long before the first Playstation was every connected to that old Zenith tube in the living room. So put on your ironic black plastic glasses and take a look at these hipster zombie games…the games that had zombies before it was cool.

People always point to violent video games and violent movies as a reason to why someone might commit a horrible crime in real life, but Mimesis plays on that claim and brings it to a scary new level of fandom. What if horror fans actually re-enacted their favorite horror movies, joining some cult-like club in which victims are unknowingly lured into a real-life role-playing event of deadly proportions? What if you woke up in a random location with zombies actually chasing you and eating the people around you just as in George A. Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead? Well if you believe violent films are corrupting the most impressionable of minds, Mimesis is likely to become your worst nightmare.

Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead was released to Blu-ray/DVD today and I wanted to share my recent interview with the movie’s director and co-writer, Douglas Schulze. We talked about his reasons for moving forward with this type of movie, the challenges of using George Romero’s classic to tell a new story, and I also learned about sequel plans:
Many people are taking Night of the Living Dead and just remaking it, while you used it as a starting point for a new movie. How did this idea originally come about?
Douglas Schulze: The story for Mimesis is very timely because of what’s happening in our world. People are so influenced by art and cinema that they go out and do the things you hear or read about. I’ve been asked if I have concern for the type of story I’m doing,...

In Mimesis, a group of people are involved in a role playing game that turns out to be real. Coming February 12 from Anchor Bay Entertainment, Mimesis was directed by Douglas Schulze from a script he wrote with Joshua Wagner, and begins at a horror convention, where a select group of fans are invited to an exclusive party at a nearby farm. Upon waking up the next morning, the attendees discover themselves in the midst of an undead siege scenario very reminiscent of a certain George A. Romero classic. (Just to assure everyone gets the point, the disc art appends the movie’s title as Mimesis: Night Of The Living Dead.) An award-winner at festivals around the world, Mimesis features appearances by horror veterans Sid Haig, Courtney Gains and the late Bill Hinzman; it will play special-event screenings in various cities ahead of the disc releases, which will include audio commentary by Schulze and Wagner. Retail prices are $22.98 for the DVD, $24.99 for the Blu-ray. Check out the trailer below.

Motion pictures have been in existence for over a century, so it’s quite obvious that there are more than just the ten actors previously mentioned in the last article who have achieved immortality on the strength of one unforgettable film performance. After a bit of extensive research I have managed to find ten more actors who, for various reasons, will always be remembered for their one role. Some of these actors went on to achieve major Hollywood success while others completely disappeared from view leaving their one film as the sole legacy of their work in the industry.
So for the cult movie enthusiasts everywhere, here is another assortment of classic screen villains. I’m glad to say that the following list has not been restricted to those in the horror genre. Villainy exists everywhere in movie land!

Horror Movie Icon Hinzman Dead At 75

Horror movie icon Bill Hinzman has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 75.
Hinzman was working as a cameraman on George Romero's 1968 horror classic Night of the Living Dead when the director cast him as a zombie in the film's opening scene.
The experience prompted him to sign up for more horror roles in films like Evil Ambitions, Santa Claws, Legion of the Night and Hungry Wives.
His last role came in 2011's River of Darkness.
He also directed gruesome hits FleshEater and The Majorettes, in which he starred, in the mid-1980s.
Hinzman, who was a regular hit at horror film conventions across America, died at his home in Pennsylvania on 5 February.

"They're coming to get you, Barbra. There's one of them now!" And with those words, it began. The zombie apocalypse, whether it's in Pennsylvania, Atlanta, or anywhere else in the world, originated in the Evans City Cemetery 30 miles north of Pittsburgh in Night of the Living Dead when Bill Hinzman shuffled into frame.
As we sadly say farewell to Hinzman, zombie infected patient zero (and also Josephine Streiner who greatly contributed to the film), we honor the man who single-handedly began the undead infestation: the great George A. Romero.
As influential as all our favorite directors have been ... Wes Craven, John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper ... it's arguable that no one has brought more to the horror genre than Romero. Sure, each of these directors gave us some iconic character, no less than Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers and Leatherface, but Romero gave us zombies. Last week Stephen Colbert warned us about the dangers of using dolphins to locate underwater mines in the Straits of Hormuz. “Need I remind you, we dumped Osama bin Laden in the ocean,” said the semi-fictional pontificater. “It’s only a matter of time until he recruits young, impressionable male dolphins by promising them an eternity in paradise with 72 herrings.”

Tomorrow evening at 92Y Tribeca, Not Coming to a Theater Near You will present Philippe Garrel's J'entends plus la guitare (1991), reason enough for Leo Goldsmith to look back on Garrel and Nico's ten-year romantic and artistic relationship, which produced "only about a half-dozen films, some threadbare Warholian portraits, shot without sound and on old film stock, others mythopoeic allegories of creation, destruction, and revolution, shot in exotic locales from Iceland to Morocco." It "was this young Garrel who first captivated French cinephiles like Henri Langlois, who hailed Garrel's 1972 film La Cicatrice intérieure as a masterpiece, and Gilles Deleuze who, in 1985, praised Garrel's 'cinema of revelation' in his second Cinema book. Deleuze's reading of Garrel, derived almost entirely from the 60s and 70s films, describes a 'liturgy of bodies,' a devotional, if not exactly pious cinema. For the young Garrel, cinema serves as a vehicle for prophecy and vision,...

Just the other day we lost the original Romero zombie, Bill Hinzman, while this morning we woke up to see that Morgan Jones, a character actor in TV and film, died in Tarzana, Calif., on Jan. 13. He was 84. Jones amassed more than 170 television credits, appearing as a series regular in "The Blue Angels" in the early 1960s, "The Twilight Zone" and recurring on Broderick Crawford series "Highway Patrol." The actor also appeared in more than 25 feature films, including The Giant Claw, Forbidden Planet and the 1957 cult classic Not of This Earth. In other news, acclaimed horror author/artist/director Clive Barker survived a near-death experience having just awoken from a seven-day-long coma. 15 Days ago Barker hit Twitter with the following message: "Dear Friends, I've had some medical issues that have recently forced me away from my beloved desk and into the hospital..."...

Bill Hinzman, who gained a measure of fame among hardcore horror fans for playing a zombie in George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead, has died of cancer at age 75. Hinzman’s gaunt-faced, lumbering zombie, sometimes referred to as the Cemetery Zombie, makes his indelible appearance in the film’s famous opening graveyard scene, killing the character of Johnny just moments after Johnny has taunted his frightened sister Barbra with the warning, “They’re coming to get you, Barbra.”

Last night, we reported on the sad news that Bill Hinzman had died yesterday. He was known for playing the cemetery zombie at the beginning of Night of the Living Dead. According to reports, Josephine Streiner also passed away this weekend:
“Born in 1918, Russ and Gary Streiner’s mother, Josephine Streiner, has passed away. Josephine played one of the ghouls in the film, and it was her car that Barbra wrecked while trying to escape Hinzman’s graveyard ghoul.”
We’ve been waiting for additional information and confirmation, and now have a note posted online by Gary Streiner:
“It’s truly a sad day for me after what was one of the higher days in my life yesterday. First was my sweet mother’s passing and then the news of Bill’s passing. My [heart] goes out to the Hinzman family and friends as well as my family and friends.
