You can’t teach someone to be an artist; as Steven Soderbergh once noted, if you could “we’d all be Stanley Kubrick.” Yet you can teach the craft necessary for artists to express themselves, and in the case of many of the books that follow, you can provide the inspiration necessary to unlock an artist’s best and most exciting ideas. Here are 13 must-read volumes for any aspiring director, books that examine the job from a variety of technical, artistic, and logistical angles. Some are more nuts-and-bolts manuals on how to use the camera, others — the ones written by working directors like Bethany Rooney, Mary Lou Belli, and Ken Kwapis — survival guides for anyone who wants to sustain a career in the industry. Taken together, they provide a comprehensive look at what it takes to direct and arm filmmakers with the tools they need to succeed.

Jesse Lee Soffer has returned home to NBC’s Chicago P.D. but not as Jay Halstead. Instead, he’s making his debut as a director in tonight’s episode “Deadlocked.”
The actor announced in late August his 10-season run on the Dick Wolf drama would conclude, making his final appearance on October 5. News followed weeks later that he would reunite with the cast and crew in the director’s chair.
“Deadlocked” is the continuation of “The Ghost Inside Of You” which aired on February 15.
“This was the perfect episode for me to direct,” Soffer told Deadline during a recent interview. “I love this episode because it was like a throwback episode to old-school Pd with Voight [Jason Beghe] going off the rails, Man on Fire kind of stuff, vigilante stuff, and living in the gray area off the books. That’s the story we’ve been telling, especially the foil between Halstead and Voight,...

Warner Bros. Discovery is continuing its directors program after all.
The company has rebranded the program, which was previously known as the Directors Workshop, as the Access Directors Program.
It comes after the company had an awkward moment last October, when it first announced that the initiative, which been lauded for their inclusion of diverse voices into the television industry, was being shuttered at Warner Bros. Television, where they have resided, as part of a massive slew of cuts.
Later that day, it announced that it would, in fact, bring it back, but it would be housed within Wbd’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion unit, rather than through Warner Bros. Television.
The Access Directors Program will ensure that graduates receive an opportunity to direct a full Warner Bros. Discovery television episode, as well as the ability to shadow directors on up to two television episodes and offer a small childcare stipend for directors while shadowing.

After the recent decision to reshape its directors’ training program, Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd) announced its new Access Directors Program.
Wbd has rebranded and expanded the directors’ program to assist and nurture television directors through workshops and shadowing, led by Wbd’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (Dei) team. Participants will receive the opportunity to direct a full Wbd television episode. In addition to workshops, directors will have the chance to work on Wbd shows and participate in a virtual curriculum focused on best practices and equity mindset sessions, with the ability to shadow directors on up to two television episodes (during which participants may receive a small childcare stipend).
In October, Warner Bros. Discovery revealed that, amid wider restructuring at Warner Bros. TV Group, its long-running Writers Workshop and Directors Workshop would move from Warner Bros. Television to the conglomerate’s Dei unit. The new Writers and Directors Workshop were...

Jesse Lee Soffer has been unemployed for 12 hours.
Which is a big deal, considering he started acting when he was 6 and hasn’t stopped since. Before he turned 30, Soffer had more than 500 episodes of “As the World Turns” and three Emmy nominations under his belt — not to mention his memorable role as Bobby Brady in the “Brady Bunch” movies.
Then, in 2013, Soffer began his relationship with Dick Wolf. Soffer’s character, Jay Halstead, was introduced on Wolf’s “Chicago Fire” (the first “Law & Order: Svu” spinoff that would go on to launch the franchise) and then became one of the leads on “Chicago P.D.” when it debuted the following year. Soffer appeared on 189 episodes — every hour of Seasons 1 through 9 and the first three of 10. (The show’s 200th episode airs on Feb. 22.)
So to Soffer, 38, the cast and crew are as close to him as the nose on his face.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to end its long-running writers and directors training program, which the conglom announced Tuesday as part of a series of layoffs and budget cuts at Warner Bros. TV Group, drew a strong rebuke from different parts of the industry, including a stinging statement on Wednesday by the Directors Guild of America.
But what Warner Bros. Discovery hadn’t followed up to explain — and quickly revealed on Wednesday — is that its Writers Workshop and Directors Workshop will live on but now move from Warner Bros. Television and be housed inside the conglom’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion unit.
The shift will happen in April, after the current 2022–23 Wbtv Writers Workshop class winds down. New chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer Asif Sadiq will take over the workshop programs, which will join existing pipeline programs division led by Warner Bros. Discovery Dei vice president Grace Moss and overseen by Warner Bros.

Glatter replaced Thomas Schlamme, who was guild president for the last four years.
Glatter has been on the Guild’s National Board since 2003, most recently as First Vice-President, and before that as Fifth Vice-President. She’s been a member of three negotiating committees including the most recent, which brought in new residuals for directors in paid video on demand and other areas.
Additionally, 160 delegates representing more than 18,000 members of the DGA elected a new slate of officers and members of the National Board of Directors, which included Ron Howard, Barry Jenkins, Ava DuVernay, Paris Barclay and others.

Thomas Schlamme will be stepping down as president of the DGA when the guild convenes its biennial convention on September 18. In a heartfelt farewell address to the DGA’s members, he looked back on his four years in office, and forward to new leadership as the industry emerges from the pandemic, which he, in no small part, helped get back on its feet.
“I will be stepping down at our upcoming Biennial Convention – and look forward to a new voice leading us,” he said in his farewell address, which was sent out to members and is on the DGA website. “And though this letter is a goodbye of sorts, more than anything it is filled with gratitude to this sacred institution of folks standing up for one another.”
First elected to a two-year term in 2017, Schlamme said that “beginning my first term, we celebrated our historic 2017 negotiations, where we achieved...

I’ve written elsewhere about my admiration for the filmmaking on NCIS: New Orleans, a procedural that channels the spirit of Rio Bravo-era Howard Hawks to combine laid-back charm and camaraderie with kinetic, expertly choreographed action sequences. Under the guidance of producing director James Hayman, whose “Aftershocks” episode from season three is a clinic in Hitchcockian suspense, NCIS: New Orleans has assembled one of the best rotating companies of directors in episodic television: James Whitmore, Jr., Stacey K. Black, Rob Greenlea, and Bethany Rooney are just some of the superb helmers who have done fine work on the series over the […]...

The Originals, Season 2, Episode 19, “When the Levee Breaks”

On this week’s The Originals, Klaus’s paranoia turns everyone against him, Dahlia remains a terrifying threat, Hayley enlists Aiden’s help suppressing Hope’s magic, Elijah chooses sides, and another character falls victim to Dahlia.
“When the Levee Breaks” is undeniably one of season two’s best offerings; it’s simultaneously heartbreaking, thrilling, and incredibly tense. The Originals consistently operates at peak performance when a finale looms near, and this episode is no exception.
Ever since her arrival last week, Dahlia’s presence in New Orleans has been wildly unpredictable and frightening. She’s very good at being creepy, as evidenced by her use of Josephine’s corpse (which drips blood through her conveniently-placed neck scarf in a very disgusting, yet kind of cool,...

Parenthood, after starting out strongly, has fallen into a familiar pattern this season, with certain of its storylines absolutely succeeding and others consistently falling flat. The two most recent episodes exemplify this, giving viewers profoundly affecting moments with Max, Sydney and Victor, and Zeek and Camille while also returning to the same frustrating well with both Joel and Julia and Sarah and Hank. At this point, it seems unlikely that either of these two problem storylines are going anywhere before the finale, leaving viewers to hope that the expected turnarounds with both happen more subtly than currently expected.

Arrow Season 2, Episode 7 “State vs. Queen”
Written by Marc Guggenheim & Drew Z. Greenberg
Directed by Bethany Rooney
