Fans have been waiting a long time to see writer/director Macon Blair’s remake of the Troma cult classic The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here), which wrapped filming way back in 2021 and unveiled a teaser trailer near the end of 2023, around the time it had its world premiere screening – but we won’t have to wait much longer. At the start of the year, it was announced that Cineverse had acquired the distribution rights with the intention of giving the film a wide release, and we’ve since learned that they’re aiming for an August 29th theatrical release. Three years ago, the Motion Picture Association ratings boards gave the film an R rating for “strong violence and gore, language throughout, sexual references and brief graphic nudity”… but never mind all that. The Toxic Avenger remake is being released unrated, and new promo images reveal exactly why it’s going out unrated.

If you don't know about the Long Island-based B-movie studio Troma, it's time you learned. Founded by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz in 1974, Troma began its life producing raunchy sex comedies like "The First Turn-On!," "Squeeze Play!," and "Waitress!" Kaufman and Herz would hit the big time in 1984 with the release of their film "The Toxic Avenger," which marked a turning point for the company. After the success of "Toxic Avenger," a twisted, low-budget superhero movie (with a soon-to-be-released remake!), the studio would skew more heavily toward horror-comedies, gore films, and splatstick humor. Troma would continue to make and/or distribute notable schlock staples for years, including "Class of Nuke 'Em High," "Surf Nazis Must Die," "Troma's War," "Rabid Grannies," "A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell," "Sgt. Kabukiman, NYPD," and the James Gunn-penned "Tromeo and Juliet," a riff on "Romeo & Juliet." They even distributed "Cannibal! The Musical," the...

As most Troma fans know, The Toxic Avenger Part II and The Toxic Avenger Part III were originally written and shot as one movie, but directors Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz ended up with so much footage that they broke it up into two installments.
36 years years later, the filmmakers’ initial vision for the sequel has been reconstructed under its original title, Mr. Melvin.
Andrew L. Miller, Kaufman’s assistant, and Adam Peltier, star of Troma’s upcoming film The Power of Positive Murder, unearthed the original script and edited footage from the two films together as originally intended.
Toxie actor Ron Fazio provided some new voiceover for Mr. Melvin. He stars alongside Phoebe Legere, John Altamura, Rick Collins, John Altamura, Rikiya Yasuoka, and Lisa Gaye.
Clocking it at around two hours, the Mr. Melvin cut will premiere as part of Troma-Thon 2025 at the Mahoning Drive-In Theater in Lehighton, Pa...

Remember the cult hit from 1984 that made Troma Entertainment notorious for its schlockiness? Finally, The Toxic Avenger is returning to the big screen once again. The franchise has been equally funny, brutal, and strangely charming. The original film mixed slapstick violence with a bit of satire. After many decades, the reboot looks to be authentic to its roots while introducing something new for the younger audience.
However, the path to this remake has not been easy. After premiering to a select audience, the film mysteriously disappeared. The movie even had big names like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Guillermo Del Toro attached to it at some points. Now that it appears to be finished, let’s explore the actors, storyline, and all the relevant details on this radioactive resurrection.

In the film, Winston (Peter Dinklage), a down-on-his-luck janitor, is transformed into the radioactive hero Toxie (Luisa Guerreiro) after a freak accident. Armed with his mop, he battles freaks, gangsters, and corrupt CEOs while trying to save his relationship with his son Wade, played by the acclaimed Jacob Tremblay. Back in 1984, Troma Entertainment brought the world The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here), a film about “the first superhero from New Jersey.” That film spawned a franchise, leading to The Toxic Avenger Part II (1989), The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie (1989), Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV (2000), a stage musical, and an animated series called Toxic Crusaders. For a long time, we’ve been hearing that Troma wanted to make a Toxic Avenger 5 – but instead doing that, they have loaned out the rights to Legendary Pictures, allowing them to make a remake of the original film that’s set to reach theatres on August 29th, courtesy of Cineverse. In anticipation of the film’s long-awaited release, we have put together a list of Everything We Know About the Toxic Avenger Remake… and here we go:

New images have revealed the best look yet at the new Toxie. Starring Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage, the reboot of The Toxic Avenger is coming to theaters on Aug. 29, 2025.
Previously, very little had been revealed from the remake. The only shot that's been released of Toxie was from behind the character, keeping his appearance mostly a mystery. Per Entertainment Weekly, that has changed with brand-new images released of the new Toxie. Check out the new photos below.
In the film, Dinklage plays Winston Gooze, a chemical factory janitor who becomes transformed into a monstrous mutant after a freak industrial accident. After it was reported earlier this month that the long-awaited reboot of Troma Entertainment's cult classic The Toxic Avenger was finally getting the theatrical release it deserves in 2025, we now have a firm release date of August 29 in place. Directed by Macon Blair and starring Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Kevin Bacon, and Elija Wood, to name a few, the film was feared to languish in limbo forever until Cineverse swooped in and picked it up, rescuing it out of obscurity.
Per Deadline, The Toxic Avenger will open nationwide to kick off the Labor Day Weekend on Aug, 29, and the best part of all is that it will be an unrated version. Cineverse found success last year with Terrifier 3, which was also unrated, and went on to become one of the biggest horror hits of 2024, earning nearly $90 million at the box office against a budget of just $2 million dollars.

Cineverse has announced that “The Toxic Avenger,” a darkly comedic reimagining of Troma Entertainment’s 1984 cult classic of the same name, is headed to theaters in 2025.
Directed by Macon Blair (“I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore”) and starring Peter Dinklage, “The Toxic Avenger” reboot will premiere as an unrated wide release later this year.
“I’m beyond grateful to the team behind ‘The Toxic Avenger’ who were so supportive and steady-handed as we searched for the perfect distribution partner for our film,” said director Blair in a statement. “It’s so cool that folks will have the chance to see this in theaters, it’s a fun rowdy movie you wanna see with a crowd. Andrew L. Miller is producing, with Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman (who directed the first Poultrygeist) and Michael Herz serving as executive producers.
No plot details have been revealed, but the sequel promises “more guts, more blood, and more poultry.” If you’ve seen the 2016 original, you know that’s no easy feat.

At first glance, The Toxic Avenger doesn't seem like the Saturday morning cartoon material. The cult classic superhero film from Troma is known for its high levels of gore, making for a campy and crass low-budget affair that's also one of the creepier movies of its genre. However, in 1991, Toxie managed to clean up his act with a short-lived animated series titled Toxic Crusaders hailing from Troma co-founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz. Now, the B movie production company is bringing the band back together with a digitally remastered Blu-ray containing all 13 episodes of Toxie and friends' adventures. It's set to release on December 10.

In the late ’80s and early ’90s, it wasn’t unusual for violent movies like RoboCop and Rambo to be turned into Saturday morning cartoons for kids, but The Toxic Avenger still seemed like an unlikely candidate — until the 1984 low-budget gorefest was cleaned up for “Toxic Crusaders” in 1991.
An environmentally-conscious superhero cartoon in the vein of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Captain Planet,” the show ran for one season. All 13 episodes are coming to Blu-ray from Troma on December 10.
While originally animated on 16mm film, “Toxic Crusaders” was mastered on videotape for broadcast, including all digital effects and transitions. To present the series in the best possible quality, Troma has used advanced AI models to upscale the standard definition masters in high definition to capture the original broadcast’s intended experience.

It's been nearly a year since The Toxic Avenger was reborn, yet general audiences still haven't had a chance to see Peter Dinklage's iteration of the trashy Troma superhero. The reboot, written and directed by Macon Blair, earned a warm reception following its debut at Fantastic Fest last September with a strong 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and plenty of positive reactions from Collider's Perri Nemiroff and John Aljets to Suitable Flesh director Joe Lynch. Promising the feel of a Troma cult classic mixed with modern sensibilities, it appeared to have something for newcomers and veteran fans of Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz's work. For anyone who's been eagerly awaiting Toxie's grand return, however, the wait might be a bit longer.

Last September, people finally got to see a bit of Macon Blair’s remake of the famous Troma film The Toxic Avenger. The original is a cult classic that puts an over-the-top, irreverent, graphically violent spin on the superhero franchise and the remake aimed to keep the spirit of the Lloyd Kaufman original. This new incarnation would also sport an impressive cast with The Thicket‘s Peter Dinklage. He’s also joined by Kevin Bacon and Elijah Wood, who portray the big baddies in the film.
However, after the release of the Red Band trailer, there has been no word on a release as the studio behind it doesn’t deem it releasable with its straddling the very fine line of commercial and cult appeal. The status of the film appears to have it in limbo at the moment, but the movie’s lead, Peter Dinklage, is optimistic that it...

Peter Dinklage is optimistic 'The Toxic Avenger' reboot will be released soon. The 55-year-old actor admitted he has no idea when the reimagining of the 1984 movie will be out but he can't wait for audiences to see it as he believes it will be a huge hit.He told The Hollywood Reporter: "I do want it to get out there into the world because it was a really big hit at Fantastic Fest in Austin, and Macon Blair, the writer/director who is also in 'The Thicket' … He’s incredible. James Gunn's earliest project has quietly landed on Shudder. While Gunn is undoubtedly best known for his work in the superhero genre, he started his career with Tromeo and Juliet, an over-the-top take on Shakespeare's classic love story. Gunn was hired to rewrite the screenplay, crafting the finished script alongside Troma icon Lloyd Kaufman, who also directed the film. Gunn also served as an associate director.
Tromeo and Juliet was released the same year that Baz Luhrmann's more mainstream adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, hit theaters. But the two are vastly different films. Tromeo and Juliet (portrayed by Will Keenan and Jane Jensen) is a wildly exaggerated and sexually explicit retelling of Shakespeare's tragedy. Set in 1990s Manhattan, the film follows the titular characters, whose love is forbidden due to a rivalry between their families, the rich Capulets and the poor Ques.

Peter Dinklage will play a new incarnation of Toxie in the upcoming Toxic Avenger movie, but if he'd passed on the role, it could have gone to Paul Walter Hauser.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Paul Walter Hauser revealed how he was one of the names up for the role of Toxie in the new Toxic Avenger remake. While Peter Dinklage was the top choice, Hauser was on deck to potentially take over if the Game of Thrones star couldn't do it. While the Toxie casting worked out, Hauser was able to read the screenplay, which he praised as "incredible." The 1999 coming-of-age comedy "American Pie" was a massive hit when it was released in 1999. Starring a who's-who of upcoming teen talent, "American Pie" delved deeply into the more embarrassing sexual details of being an adolescent boy in the modern day. There were scenes involving bodily fluids, oral sex, and multiple references to creative masturbation. While the bulk of the film -- written by Mike Herz and directed by Paul Weisz -- prided itself on aggressive raunchiness, it wisely ended on a sweet note, allowing the characters to realize that despite having had sex, they still have a lot to look forward to on their journey of growing up.
For a while in the early 2000s, Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Mena Suvari, Shannon Elizabeth, Seann William Scott, Thomas Ian Nicholas, and Natasha Lyonne were household names largely because of the "American Pie" movies. To date, the series has made $990 million.

Over the course of its 50-year existence, Troma has helped launch the careers of filmmakers like Trey Parker & Matt Stone (South Park), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Eli Roth (Hostel), along with countless actors who went on to long careers, but their biggest export by any internal metric — financial success, brand recognition, franchisability, fan base — is 1984’s The Toxic Avenger.
The film is preceded by an “extreme violence” warning. The gore is indeed graphic — the first kill features a kid’s head being run over by a car, firmly establishing that no one is safe and nothing is off limits — but it could use about a dozen more trigger warnings by today’s standards. If you can be offended, you will be offended by the boundary-pushing content that includes (but is certainly not limited to) racism, homophobia, ableism, and sexual misconduct — yet there is substance behind the sleaze.

A new red band trailer for The Toxic Avenger has been released, as a reboot of the cult classic black comedy film directed by Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman. The 2023 R-rated reboot is directed by Macon Blair and produced by the original creators Kaufman and Herz themselves. Peter Dinklage, who stars as the protagonist, Winston Gooze, is all set to pay back all his debts by gruesomely slicing his enemies, but instead of a wronged Lannister, audiences should be ready for a wronged, monstrous, and toxic superhero this time around.

The Toxic Avenger shared the first footage of its titular vigilante — armed with a mission and a mop — from the horror-comedy film starring Peter Dinklage.
Macon Blair’s feature reimagines the original 1984 cult-favorite movie and premiered this month at the Fantastic Fest in Austin. The Legendary Entertainment project, which has not yet announced a release date, stars Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a janitor whose employer refuses to cover treatment for his terminal illness. After robbing the company, Winston falls into toxic waste and aims to right society’s wrongs as the Toxic Avenger.
In the footage, a news anchor announces, “A group of armed extremists, the Nasty Lads — they’ve taken hostages at a Miss Meat lunchatorium downtown.” This leads to the introduction of the Toxic Avenger, a superhero who takes matters into his own hands.

The red band teaser trailer for writer/director Macon Blair’s remake of the Troma cult classic The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here) made its way online this morning – and now you can check it out in the embed above! Don’t expect to see much more of Toxie himself than we’ve already seen in the shadowy publicity still… but it does show some of the gory damage he does to evil-doers.
This movie may have a much larger budget than the previous Toxie films, but it does look like Blair was able to retain the Troma tone and sense of humor.
Blair’s version of The Toxic Avenger stars Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a stereotypical weakling who works as a janitor at Garb-x health club and is diagnosed with a terminal illness that can only be cured by an expensive treatment that his greedy, power hungry employer refuses to pay for.

A new preview for The Toxic Avenger shows off the cast of the upcoming horror remake.
Shared exclusively by Entertainment Weekly, the teaser images highlight Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a lowly janitor at a chemical factory who is eventually mutated into the film's titular hero. "There is a terrible industrial accident that renders him a mutant and an outcast, but also gives him some super strength and super abilities that sets him on a path of being an unlikely vigilante in this downward-spiraling society," director Macon Blair explained. "Similar to the original Toxic Avenger, he's singularly unqualified to be a hero. He's not especially brave, he's not especially crafty, but he has his heart in the right place, and he starts taking it to the limit when he's pushed into a corner."

The power of Lloyd Kaufman, Michael Herz, and Joe Ritter's "The Toxic Avenger" is truly remarkable if you really think about it. Troma Films' 1984 low-budget, superhero-splatter comedy launched a franchise that included an animated series, an off-Broadway rock musical, three film sequels, and now a remake from Macon Blair for Legendary Pictures. We know that production on the film wrapped sometime in 2021, the film is stacked with film fanatic favorites, and that "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage would be picking up the mop as the new Toxie. But today, after the wild and wonderful weirdos at Fantastic Fest announced that "The Toxic Avenger" would be opening this year's festival, even more exciting news came to the surface regarding the film.
"Let's start with the headline grabbers," Fantastic Fest tweeted. Opening night: 'The Toxic Avenger.' Peter Dinklage wields the mop. Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon rule.
