“Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice,” the upcoming action-comedy from writer/director BenDavid Grabinski, has found its baddie in legendary actor Keith David.
David, whose credits include everything from John Carpenter’s “They Live” to Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog,” joins a stacked ensemble cast led by Vince Vaughn that also includes James Marsden, Jimmy Tatro and Eiza González.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it has previously been described as a buddy action-comedy. The project hails from 20th Century, which landed the project after a heated bidding war with multiple interested parties.
David has been working in Hollywood since the early 1980s. His first big movie role was in John Carpenter’s immortal “The Thing” in 1982. Speaking to his versatility, starting the following year, he had a recurring role on “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” as Keith David the Handyman. He also appeared in Oliver Stone’s “Platoon,...

When was Bruce Willis at the peak of his popularity? It’s hard to say because, truth be told, the man has been a superstar for almost as long as I’ve been alive. When I was in Kindergarten, he was rockin’ the airwaves on Moonlighting and cutting an album, peddling Seagram’s Wine Coolers and starring in hit movies like Blind Date, and this was Before Die Hard. Yet, that 1988 movie took him to another level, with Die Hard 2 and The Last Boy Scout solidifying him as a major, major action star. Yet, one movie almost always overlooked in his filmography is a thriller he did for Sony Pictures that was sandwiched between two against-type turns, one being in Death Becomes Her, the other being in Pulp Fiction. The movie is Striking Distance, and it’s the subject of this month’s The Best Movie You Never Saw!

The 1989 action classic Road House (watch it Here) recently got a decent enough Prime Video remake that’s set to receive a sequel – which is something the original movie should have gotten around 1991 or so. But no matter what other movies use the Road House title, nothing will ever compare to that ’89 movie… which I have vivid memories of watching at a drive-in during its initial release. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of Road House, the estate of musician Jeff Healey has announced that they’re teaming up with Sony Music and Mondo Music to bring us Road House: The Lost Soundtrack, the complete, previously unreleased soundtrack that Healey recorded for the film.
Road House: The Lost Soundtrack is available to pre-order from the Jeff Healey Estate’s official website and will also be available on all major streaming platforms on June 7th, courtesy of Sony Music. This release features...

One of the hardest things to pull off in the movie industry? A remake of a golden classic that doesn’t get immediately torpedoed by furious critics and Og fans. Few directors have managed such a feat, and it wasn’t the case with this largely hated 2024 action thriller. Half of its viewers hated it, but the other half has an ace up its sleeve: Stephen King’s personal endorsement of this controversial remake.
Even Jake Gyllenhaal Couldn’t Save This Remake
The original Road House came out in 1989, starring Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliott and directed by Rowdy Herrington. The movie wasn’t too gracefully received by the critics, but the audience enjoyed it — and as it often happens in such cases, Road House later became a cult classic. You know what Hollywood does to cult classics from the 80s, don’t you?
In 2024, a modern remake by Doug Liman hit the screens.

There are a lot cult classics from the 1980s, but Road House stands somewhere near the top. Sure, many of its fans wouldn’t label it as such, since they lovingly, legitimately and unironically adore it. But there’s no use in arguing it belongs in one camp over another or that it is unapologetically everything it sets out to be. But it – and its cult following – couldn’t have happened without a few broken ribs, a don’t-take-no producer and some pervy late-night phone calls to a star’s spouse. Yes, it involves Bill Murray… So, pour some suds and rip some throats because we’re gonna find out: Wtf Happened to this Movie?!

The 1989 summer movie season might've officially kicked off on Memorial Day weekend with the release of Steven Spielberg's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," but having been a movie-mad 15-year-old kid at the time, I can assure you that May's first adrenalized action spectacular opened a week earlier when Patrick Swayze introduced us to a man named Dalton in the instant s***-kicker classic "Road House." Critics initially wrote it off as a mindless meathead programmer from mayhem merchant Joel Silver, but the aptly-monikered director Rowdy Herrington and the screenwriting duo of David Lee Henry and Hilary Henkin understood their ludicrous assignment and aced it with knowing aplomb. Their unabashed commitment to inherently risible material turned "Road House" into the "Citizen Kane" of bar bouncer movies.
Of course, "Road House" was, for a long time, the only bar bouncer movie ever made. Surprisingly, given the film's enduring popularity, few...

If the stars align, Jake Gyllenhaal could serve more knuckle sandwiches as Dalton for a potential Road House 2. The hard-hitting re-imagining of the Rowdy Herrington-directed action film grabbed viewers by the seat of their pants this past weekend, with 121.5 minutes of the new movie streamed on Prime Video, according to Luminate. While Road House director Doug Liman is perhaps not in Prime Video’s best standing after boycotting the film’s SXSW premiere (Liman eventually did attend the screening), the feature still had a successful launch. With more to the story teased in a post-credits scene, Raod House fans wonder if Gyllenhaal could return for a Road House 2. Thankfully, ScreenRant went straight to the horse’s mouth to find out if Gyllenhaal would throw more punches in a sequel.
Speaking with ScreenRant about his chances of playing Dalton in Road House 2, Gyllenhaal said, “I would love to [revisit the role]. I love the role,...

After a lot of controversy and some outrage, Jake Gyllenhaal‘s Road House is finally here and it seems to be a big hit among the audience. Based on a 1989 film of the same name by Rowdy Herrington, the Prime Video film follows the story of a former UFC fighter Dalton, who is hired by the owner of a Florida Keys roadhouse to protect it from some goons. Directed by Doug Liman, Road House stars Gyllenhaal in the lead role with Conor McGregor, Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Lukas Gage, Hannah Love Lanier, and Jessica Williams starring in supporting roles. One of UFC’s biggest stars, Conor McGregor, made his movie debut with Jake Gyllenhaal-led Doug Liman’s action thriller Road House. The remake of Rowdy Herrington’s original movie of the same name starring Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliott, the new movie has something interesting— integration of UFC fight.

McGregor plays Knox, a maniac fighter, with remarkable screen presence. However, reports indicate that the Gyllenhaal-starrer movie had a different plan for the former UFC champ, which would not be what he appears to be on screen.

The second act of the 2024 remake of Road House climaxes with a nasty knockdown fight between UFC fighter turned bouncer Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Knox (UFC fighter turned actor Conor McGregor). Squishy sounds of smacked meat mix with a thumping rock song, like a second rhythm track every time the two ruffians punch each other. Early in the fight, the camera switches to first-person view as Knox batters his opponent before swinging around as Dalton takes his turn. It’s all bathed in yellow light, with the sickly glow cut only by neon beer signs hanging on the walls.
In short, the Road House remake is trash.
But it is wonderful trash, full of cheeseball crowd-pleasing, gnarly action, and some genuine humor. Road House had me cheering and pumping my fist in the air. Well, it would have, had I been watching it in a movie theater full of fans...

Minutes into Doug Liman’s not entirely unwelcome remake, Elwood Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal), fresh off of beating several bikers into bloody, messy pulps, politely offers to drive them to a nearby hospital. Like viewers on the other side of the digital screen, the concussed, beaten-down bikers are incredulous, but the ever-polite, po-faced Dalton isn’t joking about his offer, not even in the slightest. And off they go, cramming unconformably into a too-small sedan while a Zen-like Dalton drives them to a nearby hospital. It’s the same hospital where Dalton’s soon-to-be romantic interest, Ellie, an emergency room doctor, works. It’s the punchline to a joke, of course, one of the few in Liman’s straightforward, irony-free update of Rowdy Herrington and Patrick Swayze’s gloriously...

“One, never underestimate your opponent. Expect the unexpected. Two, take it outside. Never start anything inside the bar unless it’s absolutely necessary. And three, be nice.” Those words, uttered by Patrick Swayze’s James Dalton in 1989’s Road House, are the rules to defending a roadhouse, and watching Doug Liman’s remake, you may find yourself wishing that someone had told the filmmakers that a little bit of number three goes a long way, because this nihilistic retooling of Rowdy Herrington’s cult classic is anything but.
In the remake, Jake Gyllenhaal’s former Mma fighter Eldwood Dalton scrapes together a living by scamming amateur fighters who, after stepping into an underground ring with him, automatically back down, as they’re familiar with his violent past. Things start to look up for him when he’s sought out by Frankie (Jessica Williams), who offers to put him up in...

You remember Road House, right? The 1989 movie where Patrick Swayze is a professional New York City bouncer imported to Missouri to work at the most raucous road house bar in the Show Me State? The kind of film in which the hero does tai chi, reads philosophy and coos Zen koans like “Pain don’t hurt,” and the bad guy utters bon mots like, “I used to fuck guys like you in prison?” (It was a different time.) Direct by the appropriately named Rowdy Harrington, this finely aged slice of...

There are some key differences between the Dalton of Rowdy Herrington’s 1989 cult classic Road House and the Dalton of Doug Liman’s equally boisterous remake. To start, the stoic bouncer’s first name is now Elwood instead of John. He rolls into town — the Florida Keys, not Kansas City — on a Greyhound bus instead of in a new car. This Dalton walks everywhere, wearing down the soles of his cigar brown combat boots with each mile. His swagger is enhanced by a mellow kindness — at one point, a character compares him to Mr. Rogers (with a violent edge, of course).
What hasn’t changed all that much are Dalton’s motivations and his notoriety. When we meet the infamous man, played here with compelling restraint by Jake Gyllenhaal, his face is shrouded by his black hoodie. He saunters into an underground fight club with a menacing determination. The camera trails him,...

Take it outside, Jake Gyllenhaal — there was already a “Road House 2.” And it was awful.
The Og “Road House” starring Patrick Swayze came out in 1989 and made $30 million at the box office — a nice return on investment back in the day. Naturally, MGM struck while the iron was hot: a scant 17 years later, the studio released a straight-to-dvd sequel, “Road House 2: Last Call” (2006). Exactly 17 more years later, I went straight to Vudu to buy it. I did not get a good Roi on my $9.99.
Look, I knew what I was getting into. Like you, I didn’t realize there was a “Road House 2” until Doug Liman made a “Road House 3.”
Still the only “Road House” to get a theatrical release, the Swayze flick ended up doing most of its damage on home entertainment. The film isn’t well-reviewed — it has a 41 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 36 on...

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in Doug Liman’s remake/reimagining/resomething of Road House – but it won’t be seeing a cinema screen.
Not everyone’s been keen on the news that there’s a remake of the much-loved 1980s hit Road House on the way. After all, the original – directed by the sublimely-named Rowdy Herrington – gave the late and much-missed Patrick Swayze one of his most famous roles.
The new Road House gives that part to a bulked-up Jake Gyllenhaal, and he’s going to be going toe-to-toe with an antagonist played by Connor McGregor. It’s former UFC fighter McGregor’s acting debut, and also in the ensemble are Daniela Melchior and Billy Magnussen.
The plot remains familiar: a man called Dalton is hired to work at a Road House (see what they did there?) which is being targeted by not very nice people. Those not very nice people...

What is it about the game of golf that makes good cinema? We can barely keep our eyes open during the PGA Tour. Its tranquil vibes are more relaxing than a glass of warm milk. And we can't name but a handful of players: Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, er... Is there a famous "Dave" in there? Still, we could pop in and enjoy at least a dozen films about the sport at a moment's notice on a lazy Saturday afternoon. There's something majestic about the luscious greens, the stillness of the crowd, the whispered play-by-play, and the distant thwack of a ball that translates to the big screen.

In 2010 he was sentenced to five years in prison for heroin possession and dealing methamphetamine and cocaine. At the time, Michael Douglas took the blame for his son’s behaviour, saying he had been “a bad father.” Since his release, Cameron has published a book,...

Bruce Willis was unquestionably one of the biggest movie stars of the 1990s, but it's difficult to think of another actor of his stature who racked up, and survived, more box-office bombs during their commercial heyday. Between 1990 and 1995, he appeared in more flops than hits. Any one of "The Bonfire of the Vanities," "Hudson Hawk," "Billy Bathgate," "North," "Color of Night" and "Four Rooms" could've killed his career. But when things were at their bleakest, he'd bounce back as John McClane or knock out an unexpectedly brilliant film like "12 Monkeys," and all would be forgiven.
Much ink has been spilled recounting the nightmarish productions of most of the above titles, but "Striking Distance" has generally flown under the radar since its September 17, 1993 release. Perhaps this is because the 30 million production offset its poor domestic 24 million take with a respectable 53 million international gross. Or maybe it's due to the Rowdy Herrington...

Throughout much of his career, James Spader has excelled at playing a type; and that type is specifically this: rich and arrogant, with a sense of condescension and an air of pretense. It’s not his fault; his wispy (or is that WASPy?) good looks and mellifluous voice initially offer little sympathy to the working class. But when he’s given an opportunity to play against this type, the results are exhilarating. Such is the case with Jack’s Back (1988), a clever thriller elevated by a terrific dual role performance from Spader. Come for Jack the Ripper; stay for James the Spaders.
Released by Palisades Entertainment Group in May, Jack’s Back only made back half of its million dollar budget at the box office and the critics were for the most part, unkind (with the exception of Siskel & Ebert, who liked it – go figure). But writer/director Rowdy Herrington...

Though I’m sure it wasn’t the first, Road House is one of the first action movies I can remember that was equally enjoyed by male and female. Fresh off of the success of Dirty Dancing, Patrick Swayze stepped up to play badass bar bouncer Dalton, an expert at his craft, but still a stranger in a strange land. Based on reputation alone, Dalton is hired by the owner of a notorious bar called the Double Deuce. It seems the bar has been taken over by the seedy elements that haunt it, and so it’s time for Dalton to clean it up. When he realizes that the it’s the town that houses the bar that is the root of the corruption, Dalton calls in his good friend and mentor Wade Garrett, played cooler and badder-assed than ever by Sam Elliott, to help him tear it to the ground.

"Be nice": we take a look back at the classic Road House, starring the late Patrick Swayze...
When I was originally asked if I’d like to write a love letter to Road House, I leapt at the chance – as one of my all-time favourite movies, how hard could it be to extol the virtues of a movie that contains more mullets per minute than most?
But then I tried fixing on a title for the article and in doing so was forced to confront the beautiful contradictions that combine to form Road House. Part action movie, part triumph for sexual equality, yet with a pure and unbridled vein of macho full bloodedness that’s capable of making even the meekest of people want to start a bar fight.
Feel free to liberate yourself of any shirt, as we take a look at how opposing forces...

Jack's Back, the 1988 slasher thriller, tells the story of sex workers from Los Angeles who turn up dead on the 100th anniversary of the Jack the Ripper murders in London. Police have a suspect in Westford (James Spader), but perhaps they have the wrong man. It’s been a full two years since Rob Cohen was attached to MGM’s remake of Road House, and the modern take quickly slipped off the radar once the director exited the project. Low and behold, by securing Ufc champ Ronda Rousey to lead the film, MGM has fired the cult classic back into the limelight, and now Variety is reporting that Nick Cassavetes has signed on to write and direct.
Throughout his writing career, Cassavetes has moulded a number of strong female characters on the big screen, and it’s believed that this impressive track record is what attracted MGM’s attention in the first place. While John Q and Alpha Dog feature on his résumé, it is writing credits on such films as The Notebook and My Sister’s Keeper that make him a fine candidate to take the reins of Road House.

The Notebook director Nick Cassavetes has been tapped to write and helm Road House, MGM’s remake of the 1980s film that is being fashioned as a vehicle for Mma champion Ronda Rousey. The 1989 original starred Patrick Swayze as a New York City bouncer who takes over security at a small rural bar. But stitches pile up when the bar becomes the target of a corrupt businessman. Joel Silver produced the original, which was directed by Rowdy Herrington. Cassavetes’ biggest hit is The Notebook, the tear-jerking love story that starred Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. The late 80s and early 90s were a golden age of ridiculous action movies that were so cheesy and bad, to look at them with modern eyes makes one wonder just what was going through everyone involved’s heads when they made them. For whatever reason the world was hungry for action during that period though, and the more faux badass the hero was and the more unbelievable the violence was, the better. Perhaps the ultimate example of late 80s, early 90s action cheese was director Rowdy Herrington’s (yep, real name) 1989 Patrick Swayze-starrer, Road House. It had everything that a so-bad-it’s-good action movie needed to be a success at the time: macho posturing, homoerotic fight sequences, random female nudity, throats getting ripped out, you name it. Despite the fact that Road House wasn’t really good enough to be remembered because of actual merit, years of ironic viewings on college campuses and late night...

I have to admit, I have a really big soft spot for Patrick Swayze’s 1989 flick “Road House”. I mean, the dude ripped some guy’s throat out with his bare hands! Whoa! Nowadays, you’d never be able to see something like “Road House” on the big screen. Looks like MGM wants to change all that. As they are wont to do, the folks at MGM have tapped yet another movie from their library for the remake bock — this time director Rowdy Herrington’s “Road Houses”. (I mean, the guy’s name is Rowdy, and the movie is about a kung fu fightin’ bouncer with a mullet. How can that not be a no-brainer?) The Wrap says the remakingest studio of them all have tapped “Fast and Furious” director Rob Cohen to direct the remake. The original starred Swayze was Dalton, a mysterious bouncer who, ahem, bounces from town to town,...
