Keanu Reeves
Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock will reunite for an untitled romantic thriller for Amazon MGM Studios
Keanu Reeves
Pop quiz, Hot Shot! Where would a new movie starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock rank in a long list of in-demand Hollywood reunions? Before you answer, remember the duo’s outstanding chemistry in the Jan de Bont-directed action thriller Speed. If that’s not enough, think about their enchanting romantic drama The Lake House. You see what I’m getting at. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock will reunite for an untitled romantic thriller at Amazon MGM Studios.

The project boasts a script by Noah Oppenheim, the writer of the 2016 Jackie Kennedy Onassis biopic Jackie. Plot details remain a mystery. Still, THR says they’ve heard the story is “propulsive.” I admit that’s not a lot to go on, but knowing Reeves and Bullock are attached is enough for me. The untitled project finds Reeves and Bullock re-teaming with Speed producer Mark Gordon,...

Andre Gaines
About the journey by Paul Risker
Andre Gaines
The Dutchman Photo: South by Southwest

In his narrative feature directorial début, Andre Gaines adapts playwright Amiri Baraka's 1964 one-act play, The Dutchman. Set on the New York City subway, the psychological thriller revolves around Clay (André Holland), a troubled Black businessman who has a chance encounter with the mysterious white stranger Lula (Kate Mara). Meanwhile, Clay and his wife, Kaya's (Zazie Beatz) therapist, Dr Amiri (Stephen Mckinley Henderson), inexplicably appears to him outside of their counselling sessions.

Clay's chance encounter with Lula appears to be a dangerous omen that threatens to unravel his life completely. To escape this encounter, he must answer deeper questions that have led him to this moment.

Gaines' previous credits include his 2021 feature documentary début, The One And Only Dick Gregory, and 2022's, After Jackie. From looking back to the famous American comedian, Gaines's focus shifted to the struggle for racial equality in Major League Baseball,...

‘The Dutchman’ Review: André Holland Goes on a Psychosexual Dark Night of the Soul in Contemporary Spin on ’60s Race Play
Image
André Holland continues his streak as one of the sharpest dramatic actors working today — and I’m not just talking about “Moonlight,” have you seen TV’s “The Knick”? — as a New York businessman in marital freefall in Andre Gaines’ “The Dutchman.” Gaines and co-writer Qasim Basir lift Amiri Baraka’s classic 1964 play out of its midcentury Civil Rights Movement context and transplant the text to present-day Manhattan, where Clay (Holland) is going mad over his wife Kaya’s (Zazie Beetz) recent admission of an infidelity.

So launches a dark night of the soul through the city that echoes “Eyes Wide Shut” — in which mysterious women also tempt a spiraling Tom Cruise over an evening after Nicole Kidman confesses to extramarital thoughts — and even “After Hours” with its magical realism and deus-ex-machina moments of utter (and intentional) absurdity. But Clay’s psychosexual and personal freefall does not land him at...

‘The Dutchman’ Review: André Holland Leads Andre Gaines’ Haunting Contemporary Take On 1964 Play — SXSW
Image
Although Amiri Baraka’s 1964 play Dutchman is steeped with profound commentary on the era’s racism in the U.S., Andre Gaines’ contemporary adaptation takes the plot and the message to haunting levels.

Co-written by Gaines and Qasim Basir, The Dutchman stars André Holland as Clay, a successful Black man grappling with his wife Kaya’s (Zazie Beetz) infidelity, as well as his own self-perception versus how the world sees him because of the color of his skin. After multiple people in his life tell him it’s only fair for him to step out on the marriage as well, he meets Lula (Kate Mara), a sinister, seductive white woman who knows an alarming amount about him.

“Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes,” the film’s opening reads, quoting Carl Jung.

Nearly two years after the killing of 30-year old Black man Jordan Neely on a New York City subway,...

‘The Dutchman’ Review: André Holland and Kate Mara Star in an Uneven Update of the Provocative Play
Image
In The Dutchman, Andre Gaines retrofits Amiri Baraka’s caustic play about a fatal encounter between a reserved Black man and a roguish white woman for the modern age. He intensifies the dramatic work’s surrealist undertones and takes the central couple’s story above ground. No longer confined to the claustrophobic interior of a train car, Clay (André Holland) and Lula (Kate Mara) gain greater contemporary resonance but also lose some of their edge.

When Dutchman opened at the Cherry Lane Theater in 1964, its acerbic take on the relationship between white and Black Americans shocked audiences. One critic called the Off-Broadway production, which later won an Obie award, “an explosion of hatred.” He wondered: “If this is the way even one Negro feels there is ample cause for guilt as well as alarm, and for the hastening of change.”

This slim play (it was only half an hour) debuted...

Jurassic World Rebirth Director Gareth Edwards Rumored To Be On WB's Radar To Helm Fourth Dune Movie
Image
Dune and Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve has stated that he has no intention of helming any more movies in the franchise after his planned Dune: Messiah adaptation, but that doesn't mean Warner Bros. will stop after three!

According to scooper Daniel Richtman, the studio is planning to move forward with at least one more Dune movie, and they might be looking at Gareth Edwards to take the helm.

The scooper believes that there's interest in Edwards - who also has Jurassic World Rebirth coming out later this year - stepping in to direct, but isn't sure if he's actually in talks.

The first two movies were big successes, but a fourth chapter would still be somewhat surprising given the direction Frank Herbert's saga goes in after the second book. Villeneuve has shown little interest in adapting the later novels, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune,...

Civil War, Annihilation, and how Alex Garland explores the dark side of humanity
Image
From Ex Machina to Civil War, Alex Garland’s varied work as a writer-director explores the inherent flaws that make us human.

Nb: The following contains spoilers for Ex Machina and Men.

It’s a sign of how gifted Alex Garland is as a storyteller that he can move between forms seemingly without effort. A pair of best-selling novels in the 1990s led to his screenwriting work in the 2000s and some videogame industry writing.

It was during the difficult production of 2012’s Dredd that Garland first turned his hand to directing (albeit uncredited), before making his directorial debut with Ex Machina just over a decade ago. In the years since, Garland has continued to forge an individual path through the movie business, writing and directing movies that are uncompromising and unmistakably personal. Although different in terms of their plots and even genres, they’re all united by common themes...

Will Josh Brolin quit acting after Denis Villeneuve’s omission from the Best Directing Oscar category for Dune: Part Two?
Image
Update: Not having read Josh Brolin’s recently published memoir, I am unsure how much of a poker player the No Country for Old Men actor is. However, after raising the Academy with the threat that he would retire from acting if Denis Villeneuve was not nominated for Best Director for Dune: Part Two, the actor may have had his bluff called, as the filmmaker was not called during this morning’s nomination announcement for the 97th Academy Awards.

With it time to show his hand, Josh Brolin has not yet revealed if he was being hyperbolic or if his time as Gurney Halleck has ended. Brolin has had a storied career on the big screen and may not be quite ready to throw in the towel yet, but we will have to see if he makes any comments on his social media accounts in the coming days.

Thufir Hawat's Cut Dune Role, Explained
Image
The story of Frank Herbert's original "Dune" is ultra-dense. Though it had a relatively simple coming-of-age and rise-to-power plot involving Paul Atreides becoming a leader and a revolutionary, it is in the sociopolitical context of the vast worldbuilding that surrounds that story that the brilliance of "Dune" is found.

What makes the story and world of "Dune" special are the small details, like how the Emperor of the Known Universe holds very little real power and is only in charge because of his near-invincible army (or how a simple ecologist who slowly introduced desert animals and greenery to Arrakis became such a holy figure that he facilitated Paul's rise as the leader of the Fremen). All this makes "Dune" a truly influential and beloved sci-fi classic.

This is to say, there was no way for any adaptation of the books to fully encompass everything Herbert covered — except maybe the rather faithful 2000 "Dune" TV mini-series.

The 10 Best TV Performances of 2024
Image
The challenge of crafting a list of the best performances of the year never lies in thinking of people who deserve to be on it. It’s always, always in agonizing over which ones to include in the limited slots we have.

That is why, as usual, we’ve restricted ourselves here to shows that aren’t on either of our individual top 10 lists or on our list of favorite episodes (and why we further kept our ourselves to only one actor per show). It’s not that we don’t know how good Andrew Scott on Ripley or Jessica Gunning on Baby Reindeer or the entire casts of Shogun and Somebody Somewhere and My Brilliant Friend are. We do! We just really want to spread the love when we can, given the sheer amount of excellence on display during the past 12 months.

… And even then, if we’re being honest,...

Hit comedy series A Man on the Inside gets a deserved second season
Image
Comedy series and movies come in bundles every holiday season. Most of those bring some instant fun (or not), and only a few make an impact that lasts.

It seems though that the new series A Man on the Inside, created by television producer, writer, director, and actor Mike Schur with series stalwart Ted Danson has hit all the right spots with the viewers, as it hit Netflix’ most popular English TV list, remaining in the Top 10 for three weeks since its release.

The series also got a ‘certified fresh’ mark from Rotten Tomatoes and, even more importantly, a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Charles, the series' main character. No wonder then that Netflix decided to, practically right after its release, extend the series for another season.

‘Warfare’ Trailer Captures Navy SEALs in Deadly Iraq War Siege

Alex Garland and Iraq war veteran Ray Mendoza take audiences inside a real-time Iraq war siege involving American Navy SEALs in the first trailer for A24’s Warfare, which dropped on Monday.

The bloody, immersive retelling of the 2006 Iraq war sucks viewers into the horrors of military combat by depicting a squad of American soldiers inside the home of an Iraqi family and coming under heavy bombardment and attack. An A24 synopsis of the film describes it “a visceral, boots-on-the-ground story of modern warfare, told like never before: in real time and based on the memory of the people who lived it.”

“Alpha 2, we might have guys starting to move on our position,” Will Poulter in full combat gear, radios in at one point in the trailer. That’s followed by a giant explosion and returning machine gun fire in the war movie based on ex-Navy Seal Ray Mendoza...

Dune: Messiah - Anya Taylor-Joy Shares Excitement To Return As Alia Atreides
Image
Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve recently shared a positive update on Warner Bros.' plans for a third movie, confirming that the script for an adaptation of Dune: Messiah is officially in the works.

Villeneuve also confirmed (though it really didn't come as much of a surprise) that Anya Taylor-Joy will return as Alia Atreides following her brief cameo in the last movie.

In Part One, we learn that Paul Atreides' mother, the Bene Gesserit Lady Jessica, is pregnant with the late Duke Leto's child. When the Fremen take in the survivors of the Harkonnen massacre, Jessica agrees to become the tribe's new Reverend Mother (she isn't really given a choice) and is "persuaded" to drink the Water of Life (a blue substance that's been extracted from a juvenile sandworm).

This gives Jessica incredible foresight and knowledge of previous generations, while also awakening similar abilities in her unborn daughter,...

'I Was Rolling the Dice': Director Denis Villeneuve Says Dune: Part One Was a Huge Gamble
Image
Denis Villeneuve confirmed Dune: Part One fulfilled a lifelong passion. He took on the challenge knowing his first Dune film could be an open-ended one-and-done.

Denis Villeneuve's Dune saga hinged on the breakout success of Dune: Part One. He knew that film would define his career; despite opportunities, he didn't rush at the prospect of helming an adaptation. "I waited many years before accepting the challenge," he told IndieWire. "I agreed to do it when I felt I was ready to bring it to the screen. And I did it with people who absolutely believed in the novel." Fans agree Frank Herbert's story is almost unfilmable, but Villeneuve proved otherwise with Dune: Part One's mass appeal and faithfulness to the source material. He recalled waiting for the studio to greenlight his follow-up installment.

Oscar Isaac Thought Timothée Chalamet's Bob Dylan Casting Was a "Bad Idea"
Image
James Mangold is following up his 2023 blockbuster Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny with a smaller but just as ambitious project: A Complete Unknown. The biopic, which centers around music icon Bob Dylan during the early days of his career, is already receiving awards season buzz in no small part thanks to the lead performances of Timothée Chalamet and Monica Barbaro, who play Bob Dylan and Joan Baez respectively. After his incredibly compelling role in Dune: Part Two, it's impressive to see the actor delivering yet another landmark performance in the same year.

However, for those who think Mangold's casting of Timothée Chalamet as the legendary folk singer is unconventional, his Dune co-star Oscar Isaac would agree. That is until he experienced Chalamet's creative process with the character firsthand. According to a report from Variety at the Gotham Awards, the Dune actor and some of his other Dune co-stars...

I mean it's Dylan. It's the holy of holies for me. It just didn't sound right. "Then, Timmy takes out his guitar. Not a good sign."Oscar revealed that he and fellow actors Josh Brolin and Stephen McKinley-Henderson were left stunned when Chalamet started performing. The 'Robin Hood' actor said: "Josh, Stephen and I aren't your average Timmy groupies. Image
Oscar Isaac initially wasn’t sold on the idea of Timothee Chalamet playing Bob Dylan!

Oscar Isaac thought Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan was a ‘bad idea’ until he heard him sing on ‘Dune’ set
Image
Oscar Isaac thought it was a bad idea for Timothée Chalamet to play Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown” until he heard him sing and play guitar on the set of “Dune.”

Isaac told the story at the Gotham Awards Monday night while presenting Chalamet and “A Complete Unknown” director James Mangold with the Visionary Tribute. Back during the filming of “Dune,” Chalamet told Isaac, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Josh Brolin about the project, which tells the story of Dylan’s early years in the Greenwich Village folk scene. Isaac, a Dylan fan who starred in the definitive film about that folk scene, “Inside Llewyn Davis,” was skeptical.

“My first thought was… sounds like a really bad idea,” Isaac said. “I mean, it’s Dylan. It’s the holy of holies for me. It just didn’t sound right. Then, Timmy takes out his guitar. Not a good sign.”

‘The Madness’ Star Colman Domingo Talks Triggering Parallels and Why He Wants a Season 2

[This story contains major spoilers from the finale of The Madness.]

This has been Colman Domingo’s year. He’s tracking to land another best actor nod for his acclaimed drama Sing Sing, based on a real-life prison theater program; and his eight-episode conspiracy thriller series The Madness, his first as a leading man, dropped Thanksgiving Day on his 55th birthday.

In The Madness, Domingo plays the charming Muncie Daniels, a CNN pundit and Philadelphia native who stumbles upon a murder and is blamed for it. Oscar Isaac Thought Timothée Chalamet Playing Bob Dylan Was a ‘Bad Idea’ Until He Sang and Played Guitar on ‘Dune’ Set
Image
Oscar Isaac admits he may have been wrong. He didn’t initially understand the casting of his “Dune: Part Two” co-star Timothée Chalamet as the great folk icon Bob Dylan in director James Mangold’s upcoming musical biopic “A Complete Unknown.”

According to Isaac, Chalamet was telling him and their fellow “Dune” actors Josh Brolin and Stephen McKinley Henderson about the project on the set of the epic sci-fi sequel — and Isaac, a devoted Dylan fan, had raised his eyebrow about the whole thing. Set in New York in the early 1960s, “A Complete Unknown” chronicles the early life and times of Dylan who arrived in Greenwich Village an enigmatic, freewheelin’ 19-year-old from Minnesota and forever changed the folk community.

“My first thought was… sounds like a really bad idea. I mean, it’s Dylan. It’s the holy of holies for me. It just didn’t sound right,” Isaac...
