The Sleepy Hollow episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Back in 1820, author Washington Irving created a short story entitled The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. It brought to life the haunting character of The Headless Horseman. This legendary tale would become the stuff of nightmares and scare people of all ages. So what was the next best thing to do? That’s right…adapt it into a movie! And not just any movie… we’re talking about Disney’s The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (Record Scratch)…Sorry I meant Tim Burton’s 1999 Horror film Sleepy Hollow (watch it Here). Of all the adaptations to release, this one is the perfect version. So why and how did this get made? And how...

The MCU made Oscar history this year as Angela Bassett earned the franchise its first-ever acting nomination for her supporting turn as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This was the sequel to “Black Panther,” which was the first film in the franchise to reap a Best Picture bid.
So often, the MCU is consigned to visual effects and sound categories at the Academy Awards. For both “Black Panther” movies to break through in key categories (plus double wins for Ruth E. Carter‘s costume design), is remarkable. Still, though, the artist and filmmaking talent on show in the MCU is often overlooked purely because they are superhero movies. With that in mind, here are five Oscars categories where the MCU deserves more attention.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” capped off its run with the guilds by taking home a trophy at the Casting Society of America’s Artios Awards on Thursday. It had previously prevailed with eight of the other nine guilds at which it contended. It lost out only with the sound editors.
Two of its Academy Awards rivals for the top award — “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — did win over the sound editors. Those victories are among their overall hauls of four apiece. “Elvis” also prevailed with the cinematographers, costume designers, and makeup artists/hairstylists while “Top Gun: Maverick” scored with the actors, film editors and sound mixers.

On January 9, we heard from the first three guilds — art directors, cinematographers and sound editors — with their nominees for the best of the year in their respective fields. On Jan. 10, it was the turn of the casting directors and sound mixers to weigh in with their choices. The actors, directors, and makeup artists & hairstylists were heard from on Jan. 11. And the costume designers and producers piped in just as Oscar nominations voting kicks off on Jan. 12. The visual effects wizards added their say on the last day of Oscar voting on Jan. 18. The writers revealed their roster the day after Oscar nominations were announced. And the film editors announced who made the cut on Feb. 1

Rian Johnson was up bright and early Tuesday morning when Oscar nominations were announced — but he wasn’t watching them. “I woke up to exercise in the morning. I get to say that because it’s true. It makes me sound like a healthy person, which I’m generally not,” he tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “And I got a bunch of really nice texts from friends, like, ‘Oh, my God!'”
Johnson earned a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” three years after scoring a Best Original Screenplay bid for “Knives Out.” The franchise is one of four to have received screenplay nominations for the first film and the sequel after “The Thin Man,” “The Godfather” and “Borat.” “I feel like when I was growing up watching the Oscars, when people thanked the academy, I pictured some monolithic, like, chamber...

A murder mystery is nothing without a motive, a weapon, and a prime crime scene. Like Harlan Thrombey's (Christopher Plummer) gothic revival mansion in "Knives Out," Miles Bron's (Edward Norton) private island in Netflix's "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" serves as the ideal setup for a crime of passion. The island's crown jewel is a giant glass dome that cuts a striking silhouette at the center of the tech billionaire's private mansion. Miles refers to the estate as the glass onion, a reference to The Beatles' song of the same name. In reality, the movie was filmed at the Amanzoe, a luxury hotel near Porto Heli, Greece.
Where Was "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" Filmed?
In fact, the pricey resort, which is open to the public, isn't on an island at all. Instead, Porto Heli is located on a strip of mainland Greece called Peloponnese, about four-and-a-half kilometers from the Ionian Sea,...

Rian Johnson's latest whodunnit "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" is another fun mystery adventure from the filmmaker, filled with betrayal and pompous rich folks. Johnson once again points his knife at the upper class in the fast-paced thriller, combining his penchant for creating twists and turns with increasingly relevant sociopolitical themes. The film primarily takes place in the home of Miles Bron (Edward Norton), a billionaire pseudointellectual that brings his rich friends together for an extravagant, mystery-filled getaway. "Glass Onion" introduces a location designed to house the actions of its visitors and visually represent the pretentious nature of its owner.
A good mystery is often only as good as its environment. After all, it is no mistake that the title of Johnson's "Knives Out" follow-up directly alludes to the primary locale. Covered in glass and filled with a seemingly random assortment of artifacts and art pieces, the Glass...

When production designer Rick Heinrichs joined “Glass Onion,” he knew exactly where to begin his research for the titular dome atop tech billionaire Miles Bron’s (Edward Norton) Grecian estate in Rian Johnson’s murder mystery sequel. “I took an onion out of the fridge literally and started to cut the layers,” he tells Gold Derby (watch above). And what did the Oscar winner learn?
“That you cry when you cut into them,” Henrich quips. “ realized how structural it all was and how thick the layers were. And in the scale of the dome that we ended up using for ‘Glass Onion,’ I could see, just by cutting it, how I wanted to deal with the front face, the side that you first see the onion dome at. It was very inspirational, and I feel like no one’s made that exact glass onion dome before, so I felt very good about that.

A good mystery often begins with a clue that’s right out in the open, even if no one recognizes it at first. In a similar way, the extravagant Greek villa that serves as the principal setting for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery impressed production designer Rick Heinrichs when he first visited it early in his location search, but it wasn’t immediately selected for the movie’s game of murder that turns deadly. “It was a place that had a modernist take on classical architecture and had a hierarchy of stairs that led up to it, and I could see us placing a dome on top of it,” Heinrichs tells THR. “But our experience always tells us that the first place is never the one you end up with.” Instead, he conducted “a worldwide search and looked at everything, and it was only then that we fully appreciated the villa we had found.

The production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category in 2019, for Black Panther; and 2022 for Dune.

Rian Johnson’s whodunit is set during the pandemic in 2020 on the private Greek island estate of the character Miles Bron (Edward Norton) — a villa location on the Peloponnese peninsula that was enhanced with VFX to appear as an island in the Ionian Sea with a glass, onion-like dome and atrium as its centerpiece. “I researched every dome shape and modern glass construction detail I could lay my hands on. I then cut open an onion, layer by layer, to study its structure,” says Rick Heinrichs, whose plans for the building are pictured left. “Apart from the oxymoronic-metaphoric quality of transparency and layers, which were hallmarks of Rian Johnson’s murder-mystery film, I wanted the design to project Miles’ childish characteristics — the need to project a laid-back, cool-bro persona who embodies aesthetic living, layered atop his craving...

“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” was conceived by writer-director-producer Rian Johnson as “a whodunit that’s set in modern day that very openly engages with America right here and right now.” The second installment in the comically suspenseful “Knives Out” series (and sixth feature film on Johnson’s resume) finds Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) interacting with a new set of hoity-toity murder suspects on a private Greek island. Watch Johnson, Craig and more members of the “Glass Onion” cast and crew explain how the movie strikes “a completely different tone” from its predecessor in the exclusive video feature above.
After receiving a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for “Knives Out,” Johnson applied “a whole new narrative gambit” to the “Glass Onion” script that actresses Kate Hudson (Birdie Jay) and Janelle Monae (Andi Brand) respectively refer to as “brilliant” and “deep.” Monae adds that the story’s “energy allowed...

When Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” the sequel to his 2019 murder-mystery “Knives Out,” received a theatrical release over Thanksgiving, it pulled in an unprecedented audience, allowing it to fare better than Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” and Sony’s “Devotion.” There are many great aspects to the movie, including Johnson’s script, the production design by Rick Heinrichs, Nate Johnson’s score (which just made the Oscar shortlist) and other crafts, but more than anything else, it’s about that amazing cast he’s assembled. Can “Glass Onion” now shake up the important precursor race of Best Film Ensemble at the SAG Awards?
Daniel Craig, who shockingly has never been nominated by the Screen Actors Guild, is the only actor back from the 2019 release. He’s joined by Edward Norton, a SAG Ensemble winner for “Birdman” (2014) who was also nominated for a solo bid for that movie,...

This review originally ran September 11, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Writer-director Rian Johnson and star Daniel Craig reteam for “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” the sequel to their 2019 film “Knives Out.” The new film trades New England for a Greek island, and a dysfunctional family for a group of friends who self-identify as “disruptors.” But essentially, it’s still a whodunit unfolding inside a mansion with a cast of eccentric wealthy folk.
A lot has happened since 2019, and “Glass Onion” acknowledges the Covid-19 pandemic in its opening sequences. But it hasn’t anticipated genre-shifting game-changers like “Bodies Bodies Bodies” and “Triangle of Sadness” now driving the conversation.
Billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) sends each of his friends a wooden box locked by layers of puzzles, which ultimately reveals an invitation to his Greek island for a getaway and a game...

Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” features a billionaire character, Miles Bron, who owns a private island in Greece.
Bron, played by Edward Norton, invites his circle of friends, an all-star cast that includes Kate Hudson, Janelle Monáe and Leslie Odom Jr., to join him for a murder-mystery weekend.
Everything about Miles screams extravagance and power. With that, it was up to the production designer Rick Heinrichs to build the perfect home.
That meant a giant mansion topped with a glass onion. Inside, an atrium resembles a museum filled with Banksy, Kandinsky and the Mona Lisa.
When it came to designing the onion, Heinrichs says, ”I did an early rendering in a photograph of the villa, and I placed it on top. I kept working and I finally decided I was going to grab an onion and I started to slice it up.”

When Oscar-winning production designer Rick Heinrichs (“Sleepy Hollow”) was first tasked with designing the titular structure for Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” he treated it like a literal onion, taking the model apart and cutting into it to study the layers. “There was something so cool and architectural about it, that it became part of the design,” he told IndieWire. “You really see the layers of depth in the dome. The metaphor of the Glass Onion works so well and I tried not to invent stuff that wasn’t there.”
For Johnson — whose latest whodunit takes inspiration from such iconic films as “Sleuth,” “The Last of Sheila,” and “Evil Under the Sun” — the metaphor of The Glass Onion was wrapped around the narcissistic, bad-boy mind of tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton). The ‘22/23 film awards cycle is so competitive that even below-the-line categories like Best Production Design are hard to call. Gold Derby’s projected slate of nominees has at least seven titles that would look like frontrunners in weaker years.
In first, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is positioned to repeat its predecessor’s victory and earn Hannah Beachler her second Oscar. “Babylon” is close behind. For his 1920s-set dark comedy, Damien Chazelle worked with Florencia Martin, whose recent credits include “Blonde” and “Licorice Pizza.” “Babylon” already seemed like a lock, and reactions to the movie’s unveiling in LA only solidify its status.

“The Fabelmans,” in third, isn’t the showiest title on the list, but four-time nominee and two-time winner Rick Carter can easily ride the Best Picture frontrunner’s coattails into a nomination. Carter’s first Oscar was for 2009’s “Avatar,...

Rian Johnson just might have mastered the art of the sequel.
After helming controversial “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Johnson revisited his “Knives Out” whodunnit world with follow-up “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” streaming December 23 on Netflix. The film premiered at 2022 TIFF and marked another collaboration between Johnson and “The Last Jedi” production designer Rick Heinrichs.
However, “Glass Onion” decidedly had more layers to peel back in production than Johnson’s “Star Wars” installment, according to the filmmaker. The Oscar-nominated writer-director revealed that while the two films are a “very different animal” from one another, “Glass Onion” was a “scarier” film to make.
“First of all, ‘Last Jedi’ was actually a proper sequel, continuing the events from a movie that I didn’t write,” Johnson told the Los Angeles Times. “With this, first of all, it’s not even really a sequel, it’s kind of like another book,...

The world’s most ambitious corporation is making the world’s biggest TV show. Amazon is hard at work on “The Lord of the Rings,” the series adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary epic fantasy franchise, which was previously adapted into the equally beloved “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy and the “Hobbit” trilogy, as well as many other adaptations. This will be the first time “Lotr” is being made into an ongoing TV series. It’s going to be a big deal. And by “big deal,” we mean “cost over a billion dollars to make.” Amazon paid $250 million for the rights alone, in a deal the attorney who negotiated it called “the most complicated deal I’ve ever seen.”
The show was announced in 2017. The eight-episode first season is in production now, and the second will start shooting soon after. The series is expected to run for five seasons.

As a young boy, Dan Lanigan collected “Star Wars” action figures and was interested in how movies were made; now he gets really excited about discovering film artifacts like Mary Poppins’ carpet bag or the prototype Jack Skellington doll.
That’s what makes him the perfect host for Disney Plus’ newest series “Prop Culture,” which takes a look at the stories behind the memorable objects featured in Disney’s most iconic projects. Each 30-minute episode focuses on a single film from the studio’s catalog, including “Tron,” “Mary Poppins,” “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
But Lanigan, an executive producer of 2017’s “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return,” isn’t just concerned with examining the hardware; he aims to spend time with those involved in the process of creating it. “I wanted to do as much as I could to help celebrate these people,” he says. “It...

It was on March 30, 1988 when Tim Burton unleashed one of his most wacky, vibrant and endearing original films on audiences everywhere, the madcap supernatural comedy Beetlejuice which firmly established Burton as one of the most forward-thinking visual storytellers of his, or any generation. While the film might have initially been birthed inside co-writer Michael McDowell’s imagination, Burton relied on an array of talents and artisans to help him bring his vision to life throughout production.
On the effects side of things, there were a handful of extremely talented artists assembled to work on Beetlejuice who were tasked with creating not only the titular character, but all kinds of off-the-wall creatures and entities that made the film a standout amongst its peers that year at the Academy Awards ceremony.

The 24th annual Art Directors Guild Awards, which honors the best production design in film and television, took place Saturday, February 1. All eyes were on the Period Film category, which this year had four nominees match up with the Oscars for Best Production Design: “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “1917” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” The other two Adg period contenders were “Ford v Ferrari” and “Joker,” while the Oscars’ fifth bid went to “Parasite,” which was up for Contemporary Film at the guild. Scroll down to see the full winners list for the 2020 Adg Awards.

On December 9, the Art Directors Guild announced the nominees for its 24th annual awards, which will be handed out on Feb. 1. These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the Academy Awards. Over the first 23 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories.
According to our expert predictions, period film contender “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” is the clear frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Production Design. We expect that three of its rival in that race at the Adg — “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “1917” — will also contend at the Oscars. The fifth Academy Awards nominee is expected to be “Little Women,” but its odds might lengthen after being snubbed by the guild.

“The Irishman,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “1917” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” on Monday all nabbed nominations for the Art Directors Guild Awards’ period-film category, the Adg category that most closely corresponds to the Academy Award for Best Production Design.
In the Adg fantasy-film category, which typically supplies one or two Oscar nominees, the guild singled out “Ad Astra,” “Aladdin,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Dumbo,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”
Both of those categories were expanded from five to six nominees because of ties.

Exclusive: As pre-production on Amazon Studios’ high-profile Lord Of the Rings TV series is gearing up in New Zealand, the streamer is moving ahead with an early Season 2 renewal for the sprawling adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novels. As part of that, Amazon has commissioned the reassembling of the writers room to break the second season. Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke confirmed to Deadline the news that the second season of Lotr is already in the works during the company’s holiday party Sunday night at the H Club in Hollywood.
Amazon Studios acquired global TV rights to The Lord of the Rings in a blockbuster November 2017 deal. It included a multi-season commitment to a Lotr series as well as a potential spinoff series. Still, each consecutive season after the first has to be formally greenlighted by the streaming network.

Will a Tarantino movie finally be nominated for Best Production Design?
Let's take a look at the Best Production Design Oscar race. While period pieces and fantasy extravaganzas dominate the costuming category, production designers are more open to other styles, too, like sci-fi, contemporary excellence, and even superhero movies. That said, at least in regards to the films that have already opened, the major contenders are roughly the same as with the Best Costume Design Oscar race.
Those We've Already Seen
Rick Heinrichs designed Dumbo's spectacular sets.
Rick Heinrichs won an Oscar for a previous collaboration with Tim Burton (Sleepy Hollow) and his designs for Dumbo are quite good, like nightmare visions of an Art Deco Disneyland. I’m less enchanted with Gemma Jackson’s pseudo-Arabian designs, but it would be foolish to count Aladdin out of the race...

No one knows Middle-earth quite like Peter Jackson does, so it’s not hard to see why Amazon Studios was interested in roping the Kiwi director in for their lavish Lord of the Rings TV series.
The award winning filmmaker has already gone on record though to say that he’s happy that he’s no longer tied up with Middle-earth and all of its many characters and storylines. And, frankly, after putting together six fantasy blockbusters based on Tolkien’s work, you can hardly blame him.
But even without Jackson’s involvement, Amazon has still managed to assemble quite an impressive creative team for the series, from Game of Thrones producers and writers to folks who worked on major motion pictures like The Last Jedi and The Aviator. Suffice it to say, it’s an impressive roster of talent, and you can find the complete list, along with a brief promo teasing their roles,...
