‘Miss Austen’ Finale: Keeley Hawes Teases Surprisingly ‘Gentle’ Conclusion to Cassy-Mary Rivalry
Image
Miss Austen comes to a close in a two-part finale airing back-to-back this Sunday, May 18, on PBS. The Masterpiece adaptation of the novel of the same name tells the story of what led Cassandra Austen to burn the letters of her sister, beloved author Jane Austen — an act that has left Cassy often painted as a villain in history books. But the true “soulmate” relationship between these two sisters, as star Keeley Hawes describes it to TV Insider, is at the root of everything in this tale, and Hawes says the central conflict of the show’s present-day timeline is going to reach a surprisingly “gentle” conclusion. Set many years after the death of Jane, Miss Austen shows Hawes as Cassandra, a woman who never married out of a commitment to her fiancé who tragically died before they could wed and to her sister, the closest relationship of her life.

Roush Review: ‘Masterpiece’s ‘Miss Austen’ Explores Jane Austen’s Real-Life Sister Act
Image
Writing great sister acts came naturally to Jane Austen. Or so we gather from Miss Austen, a poignant four-part Masterpiece drama adapted from Gill Hornby’s novel. Set in 1830, more than a decade after Jane’s untimely passing at 41, the story focuses on her surviving sister and dearest friend, the loyal and adoring Cassandra, who is determined to protect Jane’s privacy upon discovering a cache of her private letters written to her close friend, Eliza Fowle (Madeline Walker), also now deceased. (The series is unflinching in depicting the era’s shorter life spans.) Through these missives, the past comes vividly to life, spinning a fable of unrequited love and undying sibling devotion worthy of Jane’s own fictions. Cassandra’s younger self, called Cassy (a radiant Synnøve Karlsen), is described in Jane’s letters as “the calm at the ...

How ‘Miss Austen’ Draws Fine Art from an Act of Real-Life Cultural Vandalism
Image
Beating Netflix’s (entirely unnecessary) remake of “Pride and Prejudice,” the BBC’s spinoff “The Other Bennet Sister” and French rom-com “Jane Austen Wrecked My Life” to the proverbial punch, the 250th birthday celebrations of arguably Britain’s most cherished novelist begins with a four-part drama focusing on her elder sister.

For many literary scholars, Cassandra Austen is a villainess of Miss Norris-esque proportions. After all, her deliberate burning of her sibling’s vast personal correspondence — only 160 of her approximately 3,000 letters are still intact — largely thwarted any attempt to further understand the famously elusive author. However, “Miss Austen,” itself based on Gill Hornby’s same-named piece of historical fiction, does its best to exonerate her reputation as a cultural vandal.

The BBC original certainly comes with an impressive period drama pedigree. Director Aisling Walsh won a BAFTA for her post-war miniseries “Room at the Top,” while leading lady Keeley Hawes...

Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Tomb Raider TV Series Starring Sophie Turner Is Reportedly "Dead" At Amazon
Image
Last November, we learned that Game of Thrones and Dark Phoenix star Sophie Turner had been tapped to play the new Lara Croft in Prime Video's planned Tomb Raider reboot.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) had been announced as the show's writer several months before, and the TV series looked to be a major priority for Amazon. Now, as a new James Bond movie takes shape, it sounds like it won't be happening after all.

According to Mail Online (via GameFragger.com), plans to start shooting Tomb Raider "in early 2025" have been scrapped. Waller-Bridge's scripts appear to be taking longer than expected, and according to inside sources, the show is considered "dead."

Turner is also thought to be busy with other projects, prompting one person to say, "I hear that it is not going ahead."

Former Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke gave this Tomb Raider project the green light.

Monica Dolan, The First Actress This Decade To Be Nommed For Two TV BAFTAs In One Year, Says Industry Is “Plagued By Fear”
Image
Exclusive: Monica Dolan, the double-bafta-nominated star of Mr Bates vs the Post Office, has raised concerns that the TV industry is “plagued by fear” due to the drama funding crisis.

Dolan, who last Thursday became the first actress this decade to be nominated for two TV BAFTAs in one year, said “creativity has to come from risk, belief and bravery” as she reflected on the outsized success of local stories like ITV’s six-time BAFTA-nommed Mr Bates.

“I think really what we are plagued by is fear and unfortunately in a lot of rooms that are supposed to be creative there’s talk that we’re scared of it being this or that or don’t want it to be X, Y or Z,” she told Deadline. “But if you are starting from a place of fear then you might as well forget about it really.”

Dolan stressed that the...

10 Best TV Shows Like Hulu's Paradise
Image
There may be trouble in "Paradise," but that's just how we like it. The hit Hulu series (created by "This Is Us" showrunner Dan Fogelman) landed on the streamer in 2025 to positive reviews and much buzz, quickly making a case for itself as one of James Marsden's best TV shows ever. The "X-Men" alum plays slain U.S. President Cal Bradford, whose sudden death sends Secret Service agent Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) on a winding mystery through a post-apocalyptic America.

Along the way, Xavier comes across hidden clues, government secrets, and deep state conspiracies, all hallmarks of a story rooted in a subgenre that is perhaps the guiltiest of pleasures -- the speculative political thriller. Stories under this umbrella can just as easily be titillating, smartly written, and dramatically engrossing as they are oblivious, self-important, and totally ridiculous. Sometimes, a story can be all these things at once,...

Keeley Hawes Leads an Untold Tale of Romance and Heartbreak in New 'Miss Austen' Trailer

The four-part miniseries is based on the novel by Gill Hornby and follows Cassandra Austen (Keeley Hawes), sister to famous Regency-era author Jane Austen. Now, in this series,Hawes plays an older Cassandra Austen, heading back to her childhood estate in order to retrieve the letters and eventually commit the deed that shrouded her in infamy. 'A Brilliant Re-Imagining': Stephen King Praises TV Show Adaptation of 47-Year-Old Sci-Fi Story
Image
Acclaimed horror author Stephen King has shared a new recommendation for a TV series. This one takes inspiration from a sci-fi/horror story that's nearly five decades old.

On the social media platform Threads, King praised the limited series The Midwich Cuckoos. The series was previously released on Sky Max in the UK in 2022, though it's currently streaming on AMC+ in the U.S. King noted his surprise that the series did not get more attention, describing the adaptation as putting a "brilliant" on the original tale by author John Wyndham.

The Overlooked Sci-Fi Horror Series Stephen King Called 'Brilliant'
Image
If you're looking for a high-concept, mysterious sci-fi show in the vein of "Under the Dome," "From," or "Manifest," Stephen King has a recommendation for you. The master of horror has always loved sharing recommendations for spooky genre offerings on social media, and this week he took to Threads (he left the cesspool formerly known as Twitter in November) to highlight the UK-made series "The Midwich Cuckoos."

"The Midwich Cuckoos (Amazon): Surprised there hasn't been more talk about this," King recently posted on Threads. "It's a brilliant re-imagining of John Wyndham's classic sci-fi/horror novel." The title of one of Wyndam's best-known novels may not sound familiar to you, but the name of its earlier film adaptation might: "The Midwich Cuckoos" became "Village of the Damned" when Wolf Rilla adapted it in 1960. That version of the story is considered an all-time-great horror movie, alternately dubbed as an "excellent...

"Brilliant": Stephen King Praises Sci-Fi Horror Adaptation Of Classic Novel
Image
Stephen King praises a sci-fi adaptation of a classic sci-fi horror, which flew under the radar when it was first released. As the year comes to a close, the seminal author has shared some of his TV favorites. They've varied from the Jamie Dornan crime thriller The Tourist to the short-lived Apple TV+ series Constellation. But several of his recommendations tended to have one thing in common.

Whether it was the straightforward horrors of shows like Evil or Teacup or the more subdued unease of a drama like the Billy Crystal-led Before, several of King's TV notables tend to revolve around unsettling situations that would not seem at all out of place in some of his most famous novels. The author's latest recommendation follows along those lines.
