The Phantom of the Opera is sometimes considered one of the Universal Monsters. I get it. From the 1925 version that gave us one of the most infamous unmasking sequences ever courtesy of the great Lon Chaney Sr., through the Hammer iteration with Herbert Lom, all the way up to the 2004 film that gave a lot of us our intro to Gerard Butler. Speaking of that movie, its inspiration and reason for its existence was the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical that premiered in October of 1986 and has had runs all the way through as recently as 2021. 1989 was the beginning of its U.S. tour and we got not one but Two Phantom movies that year. After three days of celebs, slashers, and screenings, the Silver Scream Fest went out with a flourish today in Santa Rosa, Calif. The three-day film festival saw luminaries like Freddy Krueger’s own Robert Englund, director John Landis, seven-time makeup-effects Oscar winner Rick Baker, ambidextrous artist Rob Prior, and Elm Street heroine Heather Langenkamp, among others, come to meet fans and talk about their contributions to horror cinema.
There were screenings of some of the best independent scary cinema out there, in addition to screenings of contemporary classics like A Nightmare On Elm Street, New Nightmare, An American Werewolf In London (on its 35th anniversary), and Santa Sangre alongside classics from the Golden Age of Hollywood like Dracula (On its 85th anniversary! Seems like just yesterday….), Island Of Lost Souls, and White Zombie.

For the third week of February, Scream Factory is delivering a double dose of terror in their releases of the recent indie horror flick Animal as well as the 1989 cult classic adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera starring Robert Englund and Jill Schoelen.
Magnolia is also bringing us V/H/S: Viral, the latest edition of their popular horror anthology series, home on Blu-ray, DVD and VHS (which is awesome!), and indie genre fans have tons of new titles to look forward to. Hollyoaks schemer Cindy Cunningham will decide to marry a 72-year-old millionaire in a forthcoming storyline, it has been revealed. The surprise plotline begins when Cindy, played by pregnant actress Stephanie Waring, meets rich Alistair Longford (Terence Harvey) at a party which is also attended by the McQueens.
