Is there any current director who is more controversial than Zack Snyder? It’s wild how divisive a figure he is, with his fans nearly cult-like in their devotion, while his detractors are just as fervent. Here at JoBlo, we’ve always been ardent supporters, even if we haven’t unquestioningly praised all of his films. Thus, we thought it would be interesting to do an all-around ranking of his films (although we’ve left the animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole off the list). So, without further ado, here’s our ranking from worst to best.
Sucker Punch:
I’ll admit to not knowing precisely what Snyder was trying to pull off when I saw this movie in 2011. It remains the most obscure of his live-action films. It is a tough nut to crack, being that it’s a fantastical, hyper-surrealistic fantasy centred around a woman...

Zack Snyder’s tenure in tee Dcu has been divisive and controversial as he presented DC characters with a certain edge that was not accepted by fans. His presentation of idealistic characters like Superman and Batman being put in dire circumstances provoking them to kill other beings was not something that audiences were not ready to see.
Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/ Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel
Nevertheless, there have been Snyder loyalists who have defended his edgier take on characters and breaking previously established norms of the DC characters. Right from Man of Steel, Snyder took chances with the Superman lore with a controversial approach to Jonathan Kent’s death scene. Snyder defended this as an important step in Clark Kent’s evolution into being Superman.

Zack Snyder's "Watchmen," as it turns out, could have featured one of the biggest movie stars of all time -- Tom Cruise. The actor behind "Mission: Impossible" and "Top Gun," among many, many other hits, was said to be in the running for a role in the film dating back to several years before it even came out, which Snyder later personally confirmed. But now, the filmmaker has added a pretty interesting layer to the whole thing: Cruise would have starred in the movie, but he wanted to take on the role of Rorschach, which isn't exactly what Snyder had in mind.
Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast as part of the promotional tour for his new movie "Rebel Moon -- Part Two: The Scargiver" (which hits Netflix this weekend), Snyder touched on Cruise's potential casting in "Watchmen" all those years ago. The director explained...

Jeffrey Dean Morgan played Edward Blake aka The Comedian in Zack Snyder’s 2009 film Watchmen. It was this lesser-known DC property that launched Snyder’s career into one of the fan-favorite Cbm directors. Morgan only had great things to say about the film, which he shared was ahead of its time. Morgan was sure that the series created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons would be loved forever by fans.

Tom Cruise is easily one of the biggest Hollywood stars of all time. Even though he has been in the industry for over four decades, he is still sought after by the best directors to star in their projects. The actor himself exerts his influence too, often to bring out the best in him, and his decisions have always paid off.
However, he does not always get his way, as Zack Snyder recently revealed. The director confessed that he wanted the Mission: Impossible actor to play a certain character in one of his films, but Cruise sought a different role.

Zack Snyder is all set to release the second part of his space opera magnum opus Rebel Moon. The Netflix film is the follow-up to last year’s Chapter 1 – A Child of Fire. The filmmaker has had a busy few years after helming large-scale blockbusters such as Army of the Dead and Justice League.
While Snyder has worked with many A-listers, he reportedly got a call from the legendary star Tom Cruise early in his career while he had just finished 300. The actor reportedly gave him a surprise call after the film opened big at the box office. Cruise was also reportedly Snyder’s first choice to play Ozymandias in his divisive Watchmen adaptation.

15 years after its theatrical release, Zack Snyder's "Watchmen" occupies a curious spot in the history of comic book superhero cinema. While bleak blockbusters like "Dune: Part Two" and "Oppenheimer" might be all the rage in 2024, that wasn't the case when Snyder's film arrived in 2009. The success of "Iron Man" a year earlier signaled a shift in audiences' tastes. The brooding, auteur-led offerings of the 2000s (like "Hulk" and "The Dark Knight") would soon after give way to the studio-mandated crowd-pleasing spectacles of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Snyder's relentlessly downbeat and violent interpretation of writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons' equally grim milestone graphic novel suddenly felt wildly out of tempo with the genre, as did his subsequent vision for the now-kaput DC Extended Universe.

In a 1996 episode of "This American Life," host Ira Glass was introduced to the vast, near-incomprehensible world of "Dark Shadows" for the first time. "Dark Shadows," for those who don't know, is a Gothic, vampire-forward soap opera that ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971, lasting six seasons and, no lie, 1,225 episodes. Because it was a daily program, the showrunners had to work at a breakneck pace, often committing grievous technical errors along the way. Those errors, however, were the central appeal for the world's many "Dark Shadows" fans. Glass likened it to tuning into car races just to see crashes. There is verisimilitude to such a concentration of human error.
Then, Glass is told by a "Dark Shadows" fan, that words like "groovy" began working their way into the show's dialogue sometime in the 1969 season. "Dark Shadows" is deeply beloved, partly for its complex, vampiric storylines, but just as much for its cheap camp.

Samara Weaving has earned modern scream queen status with roles in films like The Babysitter, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Mayhem, Ready or Not, Scream VI, and the upcoming horror action movie Azrael, plus a few episodes of the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series. Since Weaving has worked in both the Scream and Evil Dead franchises, she was asked during a new interview with Collider which horror franchise she would like to be a part of next. Her answer: Nightmare on Elm Street.
The filmmakers behind Azrael had originally wanted to cast Billie Eilish in the role Weaving ended up playing. So when she was asked the horror franchise question, she said, “Nightmare on Elm Street. I can do it. Unless Billie Eilish gets it now.“

The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has been dormant for over a decade now, and despite the fact that people like Mike Flanagan and Elijah Wood are interested in making Elm Street movies, there are no new films on the horizon. Freddy Krueger’s extended vacation is going to continue a while longer. At least we have several films to revisit – and as part our of Halloween celebrations here at JoBlo and Arrow in the Head, we decided to put together a list ranking those films from worst to best. So keep scrolling down to see our take on Nightmare on Elm Street Movies Ranked.

In the trailer for only his third directorial feature, filmmaker Zack Snyder was heralded with the title of “visionary.” In retrospect, you might label that many things: aspirational, hubris, or just plain, good old-fashioned marketing copy. Whatever the case might be, it had a point. Love or hate Snyder’s aesthetic, his films are visually and instantly recognizable, and they’ve found a fervent audience that is still tens of millions strong more than a decade after this sizzle reel.
But all that would come later. Back in 2009, the moniker was adorned on Snyder during the marketing push for Watchmen, the ambitious and sprawling attempt to turn Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ most influential graphic novel from the 1980s into a three-hour film (or about two hours and 45 minutes in the case of the original theatrical cut). The film could never lose points for daring, but it was analyzed mercilessly...

Christopher Nolan is praising Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen” for pushing the boundaries of superhero films.
Snyder’s 2009 adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel infamously underperformed at the box office, and starred Patrick Wilson, Malin Akerman, Jackie Earle Haley, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Carla Gugino.
Now, “Oppenheimer” director Nolan is calling the film over a decade later “ahead of its time,” especially when capturing a superhero ensemble that Marvel’s “Avengers” made popular years later.
“I’ve always believed ‘Watchmen’ was ahead of its time,” Nolan told The Hollywood Reporter. “The idea of a superhero team, which it so brilliantly subverts, wasn’t yet a thing in movies.”
He added, “It would have been fascinating to see it released post-‘Avengers.'”
Later in the article, Snyder addressed his other superhero team-up movie, DC’s “Justice League,” which was theatrically released with Joss Whedon’s reshoots...

Counting Ronny Yu's 2003 mash-up film "Freddy vs. Jason" and a remake in 2009, there have been twelve "Friday the 13th" movies to date. There would likely have been more by now -- poetically speaking, shouldn't there be at least 13 of them? -- but production on further sequels has been stymied by some complex litigation; Victor Miller, the original screenwriter of 1980's "Friday the 13th," has argued in court that a labyrinthine series of business transfers put the rights to the original movie back in his name, while producer/director Sean S. Cunningham asserts that his company owns the rights due to a 40-year-old work-for-hire contract. Until that dispute is settled, no further "Friday the 13th" movies are likely to be made.
That hasn't stopped ideas from being floated. Rumors have circulated for years about potential "Friday" sequels. The screenwriters of the 2009 remake wrote a direct sequel to their movie that was never made.

‘Dylan’s New Nightmare’ – Fan Film Sequel to ‘New Nightmare’ Starring Miko Hughes Is Worth Your Time
I have mixed feelings on fan films. I’d prefer to see indie filmmakers invest their resources in an original concept rather than someone else’s intellectual property, but I also understand the reality that content with an established fanbase guarantees more engagement. Moreover, when beloved properties like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th become entangled in ongoing legal disputes, fan films can sate viewers’ hunger for more.
Even if a new Elm Street movie is produced with Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, it’s highly unlikely to acknowledge the events of New Nightmare, given its blurring of the lines between fiction and reality. (Freddy vs Jason ignored it as well.) YouTuber-turned-writer/director Cecil Laird teamed with producer Vincente Disanti — the filmmaker behind the popular Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone — to fill that void with Dylan’s New Nightmare: A Nightmare on Elm Street Fan Film.

Though less obvious about it than some other streaming services, Peacock has been churning out some of the best TV of the year. On the heels of Emmy-nominated series “Poker Face” and “Mrs. Davis” comes the return of Craig Robinson’s comedy “Killing It.” The show stars Robinson and Claudia O’Doherty as Craig and Jillian, two underdogs who team up to kill snakes to win prize money, a real thing that happens in Florida as a means of protecting the ecosystem from invasive pythons.
In Season 2, which is now streaming, the pair’s talent for killing snakes leads to the realization of Craig’s dream: owning a saw palmetto farm, which he hopes will give him the means to become a mogul. The comedy, which hails from “Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s” Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici, is as endearing as it is biting as it takes on issues of class...

In these dark times in which we live, the line between satire and horror can be so razor-thin as to barely exist at all. Peacock’s Craig Robinson comedy Killing It is ostensibly a comedy about how badly the American economic system is stacked against anyone who isn’t already well-off. But its humor is so cutting, and so often feels not that far removed from reality, that I often spend more time covering my face during episodes than laughing.

Ben Young’s thriller movie Devil’s Peak is based on a book by David Joy and stars a talented cast, including Billy Bob Thornton and Robin Wright. However, poor direction and a disastrous script sabotage any of the suspense or interest that the story could have had, and instead, we’re left with a half-hearted attempt where the majority of the characters are unconvincing. Here’s what happens in the 2023 thriller Devil’s Peak.

Patrick Wilson said in an interview on the “Reelblend” podcast that Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen” adaptation helped pave the way for “The Avengers” and the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe to take a much lighter approach to the comic book genre. Snyder’s dark and operatic take on Alan Moore’s graphic novel proved divisive, as the film didn’t even make it past $200 million at the worldwide box office.
Wilson revealed “Watchmen” is “the only movie of mine that I have watched front to back since a premiere,” adding, ‘That movie is awesome.”
“I just wanted to look at it as an older guy, as a filmmaker,” Wilson added. “I knew Zack was ahead of the curve. It’s weird to say that audiences weren’t ready for it. But you need a movie like that. You need movies to go so dark that then ‘Avengers’ can go so light.

"The old guy – he keeps killing everybody!" Falling Forward Films & Productivity Media have revealed an official trailer for The Retirement Plan, a wild action comedy landing in theaters later in August. This doesn't look like it will make any kind of impact, but with Cage rocking a burly beard it might just get some people into theaters. Ashley and her young daughter Sarah must seek out Ashley's estranged father, Matt, for help when they wind up in the middle of a criminal enterprise that threatens their lives. He is now living the life of a retired beach bum in the Cayman Islands when they track him down but are soon found by the crime boss Donnie. The more time she spends with Matt, she realizes he has a secret past she never knew about. Nicolas Cage and Ashley Greene co-star, with Thalia Campbell, Jackie Earle Haley, Ron Perlman, Joel David Moore,...

Nicolas Cage continues to straddle the line between genius and madness as he now plays a surly grandfather who has acquired a special set of skills in his past career. The infamously eccentric actor has the rare distinction of being self-aware of his online reputation while continually feeding the unintentional comedy with his own personal truth. In an age where Cage can make a movie like The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which parodies himself, as well as give an acclaimed, understated performance in a film like Pig, there is certainly no predictable trajectory of his already varied career.
Enter The Retirement Plan, which has just released a trailer from Falling Forward and Productivity Media. The film stars Cage as well as Ashley Greene, Ron Perlman, Jackie Earle Haley, Joel David Moore, Grace Byers, and Ernie Hudson.
The synopsis, per Deadline, reads,

Robert Englund is ready to wake up from “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”
The iconic franchise star, who has portrayed Freddy Kreuger across eight films since 1984, revealed that “Freddy vs. Jason” was the last stand for his take on the character.
“I kind of knew after 2004 that I wasn’t up to playing Freddy again,” Englund told Insider while promoting documentary “Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story,” adding, “I was in my 50s, and ‘Freddy vs. Jason’ took a lot out of me.”
Englund was “still doing a lot of my stunts,” including underwater scenes, but the film proved that he was done with the role due to his age. “I kind of knew I didn’t have a lot of stunt work left in me, or a lot of takes to physicalize it,” Englund said. “And my torso had shifted, along with my face getting older, which...

Maybe more than any other character in the pantheon of horror villain legends, Freddy Krueger was custom built to put the fear of god into us. Nothing about his presence was thrown together haphazardly. Instead, nearly every aspect of his design had a tremendous amount of thought put into it. From makeup effects great David B. Miller’s inspired work creating the Krueger’s crispy kisser, to the subliminal mind games played by creator Wes Craven when choosing certain aspects of his look (the razor glove was meant to resemble the clawed paws of a prehistoric predator while the colors of his sweater were chosen due to the difficult time the human eye has processing red and green together), we were meant to feel Freddy’s menace on a subatomic level.

One of the most memorable faces in horror history, Robert Englund remains a rare example of a genre actor that no director would dare to hide under a mask. Sure, his signature role as the clawed dream demon had Englund performing under several layers of intricate makeup, but it was still his iconic expressions and mannerisms that turned Freddy Krueger into a household name.
However, one of the actor’s many talents is rarely acknowledged when looking back on his decades of contributions to genre media, and that would be his penchant for villainous voice-acting. For decades now, the sultry sounds of Robert Englund have been bringing all manners of animated characters to life in cartoons and videogames. And with #RobertEnglundDay finally upon us, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of Robert’s most memorable voice roles.

Yesterday, we shared an interview in which Robert Englund confirmed that his days of playing Freddy Krueger are over – and for his replacement in the role, Englund suggested an actor whose name comes up frequently when people fan cast a new A Nightmare on Elm Street movie: Kevin Bacon. Bacon seems open to the idea, but there’s another actor out there who’s eager to take his turn wearing the glove and fedora. In response to the interview with Englund, Devon Sawa sent out a tweet saying, “I’d love to follow in his footsteps and play Freddie.” Forgive him for misspelling the name. It’s a common mistake.
Sawa is a genre regular whose credits include Final Destination, Idle Hands, Hunter Hunter, Black Friday, The Fanatic, and the Chucky TV series – where he played three different characters over the course of two seasons.

Horror movie legend Robert Englund, best known for portraying merciless nightmare murderer Freddy Krueger, is opening up about where he believes the character fell off the rails in the newer flicks.
The acclaimed horror movie vet, 75, recently shared his thoughts with Variety while discussing his upcoming documentary, “Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story”, which releases June 6.
Englund initially auditioned for Wes Craven’s 1984 smash “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, a low-budget hit which blossomed into a defining horror film, while filming another role for the movie “V”. After starring as the serial killer in a myriad of sequels and spin-offs, his final appearance was in the 2003 box office smash “Freddy vs. Jason”.

Before the documentary Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story drops on June 6, the legendary actor who plays Freddy Krueger in eight movies and a TV series is reflecting on his career and legacy. Many people (including myself) consider Englund an icon, though he appears to disagree. Englund says he’s met idols and isn’t one of them. Despite his Hollywood history as a prolific performer across film, video games, and more, Englund says luck got him to where he is today.
Englund’s life could have been quite different if he didn’t audition to play the nightmare master Freddy Krueger in Wes Craven’s low-budget slasher about a burned child serial killer running loose in victims’ dreams.

Director Robert Rodriguez‘s action thriller Hypnotic, which stars Ben Affleck (Air), has taken a bumpy road on its way out into the world. It was delayed by the pandemic, shut down on three separate occasions, mixed up in an insurance lawsuit, and its main financier and distributor crumbled while it was filming. The movie spent two years in post-production, without a domestic distributor in place. It finally reached theatres earlier this month, courtesy of Ketchup Entertainment – and now it has received a digital release on all major platforms! For example, Hypnotic can be viewed on Amazon at This Link.
Scripted by Rodriguez (Machete) and Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Hypnotic sees Affleck taking on the role of a detective who finds himself spiralling down a rabbit hole while investigating a series of reality-bending crimes mysteriously connected to his missing daughter. Drawing inspiration from The Matrix, Edge of Tomorrow, and, especially, Christopher Nolan’s Memento and Inception, Robert Rodriguez’s sci-fi neo-noir Hypnotic is less homage than a faded copy of a copy. Rodriguez and co-writer Max Borenstein certainly aren’t the first filmmakers to recycle a high-concept idea. But for a film so explicitly concerned with the reshaping of reality, Hypnotic’s utter failure to present a world that feels remotely convincing or fleshed out is a source of constant distraction. And while a couple of its myriad twists are clever enough, the film is often more mind-numbing than mind-bending.
Hypnotic opens with urban police officer Danny Rourke (Ben Affleck) mourning the kidnapping of his seven-year-old daughter, Minnie (Ionie Nieves), whose abductor, once caught, claims no memory of his actions or her whereabouts. Something is off about the whole incident, the details of which are replayed for the audience via...

Plot: A detective (Ben Affleck) in Austin investigates a violent bank robbery carried out by a man (William Fichtner) who seems able to hypnotize his victims into doing his bidding. Along the way, he discovers a secret organization of “hypnotics” that may have something to do with his daughter’s disappearance.
Review: While watching Robert Rodriguez’s Hypnotic, I was struck by how much I’ve missed the ninety-minute genre movie. Running a lean hour and a half, Rodriguez’s movie isn’t a masterpiece, but it’s lean and effective, with a propulsive pace more directors should sit up and take notice of. A kind of jacked-up genre mashup that’s a bit like Scanners by way of Inception, Hypnotic, which is getting a very low-key, but relatively wide, theatrical release this Friday, is the kind of genre movie we got pretty much weekly in the eighties and nineties.

Strap on a bulletproof vest and prepare to make a shady deal or two because a Lord of War sequel is on the way. Nicolas Cage and Bill Skarsgård are teaming up for Lords of War, with Vendome Pictures producing. Andrew Niccol directs from a script he wrote, with Cage reprising his role from the 2005 original, arms dealer Yuri Orlov. The plot includes a father-son twist, with Skarsgård playing Orlov’s son, Anton. In the Lord of War sequel, Anton “tries to top his father’s wrongs instead of stopping them as he launches a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts.”
“There is so much more to explore with these characters. Plato said it best — ‘Only the dead have seen the end of war.’ I’m looking forward to spending more time in the company of the charming devil that is Yuri Orlov and now his illegitimate...
