It could be said that Patricia Herd had her very own Star Trek convention. The actress and author, who is now 90 years old, was married to two prolific character actors, both of whom appeared on Star Trek. She’s also worked on various films and television shows with other performers in the franchise.

Born as Patricia Ann Crowder, she was married to Joseph Ruskin from 1968 to 1979 and Richard Herd from 1980 to 2020, when he died. Ruskin guest starred as Galt in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “The Gamesters of Triskelion,” and later recurred as the Klingon, Tumek, in the Deep Space Nine episodes “The House of Quark” and “Looking for par’Mach in All the Wrong Places.” He also appeared as a Cardassian in DS9’s “Improbable Cause,” a Vulcan in the Voyager hour “Gravity,” and a Suliban doctor in “Broken Bow,” which served as the pilot for Enterprise.

‘Daredevil’ Season 1 Recap: Matt Murdock’s First Fight for Hell’s Kitchen
Image
Welcome to the world of “Daredevil,” where Catholic guilt, hallway fights and philosophical pondering reign supreme and the parallel journeys of Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk unfold, leading one to become the red-suited hero known as Daredevil and the other to shed his heroic aspirations and embrace the dark mantle as the Kingpin.

The first season charts those journeys in tandem, introducing us to Charlie Cox’s Murdock, an up-and-coming lawyer who was blinded as a child in an accident. But that accident also gifted him with super-sensory powers that allow Murdock to take justice into his own hands outside the law after working hours. Though he will become Marvel’s horned hero Daredevil, the Man Without Fear, he spends most of the first season as “The Man in the Mask,” donning a pedestrian black outfit including a black mask pulled over his eyes.

Murdock works with his best friend and fellow lawyer,...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally bringing over the series from Netflix's Defenders Saga, beginning with Daredevil: Born Again, which premieres on Disney+ in early March. Cobra Kai Star's Horror Movie Becomes Streaming Hit After Unnoticed Release in 2024
Image
A 2024 horror film starring Cobra Kai's Peyton List has found recent success on Hulu after its low-key debut earlier this year and rejection by most critics. The Inheritance currently has a 38% Rotten Tomato score.

Netflix announced in January 2023 that it would no longer distribute the horror movie as initially intended, opening the door for Vertical to acquire distribution rights for The Inheritance. Following a limited theatrical run, the film arrived without fanfare on video-on-demand (VOD) on July 12, 2024. The Inheritance, however, made a triumphant return to streaming, having been in and around Hulu's top 10 recently. The film peaked at no. 3 within the platform's top 15 movies earlier this week and has since managed to maintain its place in the top 15. The uptick in the interest the film is garnering from audiences on Hulu is not easily explained, given its 30% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is even worse than its critic score.

Cobra Kai Star’s 2024 Horror Movie Becomes Hit On Streaming Charts, Despite 38% Rt Score
Image
The Cobra Kai cast comes from broad backgrounds. On the one hand, one of the main actors is Ralph Macchio, who plays an adult version of the classic Karate Kid character Daniel Larusso. William Zabka also reprises his role as Johnny Lawrence, bringing back another character from earlier in the Karate Kid franchise. Including these familiar faces makes Cobra Kai seem more connected to the original franchise, and draws in a potentially wider audience of those familiar with the older characters.

At the same time, Cobra Kai's cast also includes younger members alongside the aging stars. This includes actors such as Xolo Maridueña, Jacob Bertrand, Mary Mouser, and Peyton List. List, now 26 years old, has been in the industry since she was a child actor. She played lead character Emma Ross in the Disney Channel TV series Jessie, which started when she was only 13 years old. Succession star Brian Cox has been a bit candid in the past about some of the people he's worked with. He has referred to Steven Seagal as one actor who's "overrated," and now Cox has shared more details about one film that he'd worked on with the 90s action movie star.

In 1996, Cox appeared in Seagal's action comedy movie The Glimmer Man. Directed by John Gray, the film featured Seagal as a former CIA operative turned Buddhist who is known as "The Glimmer Man" because of the speed at which he takes out his enemies. Cox also starred alongside Keenen Ivory Wayans and Michelle Johnson. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Cox reflected on his time spent filming The Glimmer Man, remembering how it actually worked out for him when Seagal refused to say his lines off-camera for their scenes together.

This Great Chief O’Brien Star Trek: Tng Moment Proved Why He Deserved To Become A DS9 Main Character
Image
Star Trek's Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) was the perfect character to move from Star Trek: The Next Generation to its first spin-off show, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. O'Brien started on Star Trek: The Next Generation as a nameless helmsman in Tng's pilot episode, "Encounter at Farpoint". After gaining a name and becoming the USS Enterprise-d's transporter chief, O'Brien's wedding to civilian botanist Keiko Ishikawa (Rosalind Chao) was a major part of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4, episode 12, "Data's Day". On Tng, O'Brien became a recurring, relatable family man with a strong work ethic.

Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4, episode 12, "The Wounded", introduced a new alien enemy to the Star Trek mythos: the Cardassians. In "The Wounded", the Federation-Cardassian War is retconned into the Star Trek timeline, with peace between the two powers being a relatively new development. That peace was tenuous at best throughout the...

Tim Robbins Says Ted Turners Efforts Saved Stephen King movie The Shawshank Redemption from Failure
Image
Frank Darabonts cinematic masterpiece, The Shawshank Redemption, has etched its place as one of the most beloved movies of all time. Released 30 years ago, it remains iconic and there is good reason for its enduring appeal, two of which are the profound narrative and the stellar performances of Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. In a recent interview with The Guardian newspaper, Robbins revealed the name of an unexpected catalyst who played a vital role in helping The Shawshank Redemption find its audience Ted Turner.

We live in an era where streaming platforms dominate our viewing habits. It has changed the landscape for movies drastically, because now, algorithms decide which movie will be a blockbuster and gain widespread recognition. In his interview, Robbins reflected on these challenges and candidly acknowledged that his 1994 movie would not have found the same level of success had it been released today.

'The Shawshank Redemption' at 30 - A Box-Office Bomb That's Aged Like Fine Wine
Image
It's hard to believe it has been a whopping thirty years since the brilliant 1994 prison drama The Shawshank Redemption debuted in theaters. A lot has changed over three decades, and during that time, the perception and reception of the story based on the novel by Stephen King, written for the screen and directed by Frank Darabont, has changed. Upon its release, and how it is regarded now is as different as night and day. Propelled by the heartwarming friendship of Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) and Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman), the story of a successful banker wrongfully convicted of double murder and his tireless effort for freedom and revenge against a crooked warden (Bob Gunton) and evil correctional guard (Clancy Brown), Shawshank, as it is now referred to in shorthand, wasn't an instant hit. In fact, audiences weren't entirely sure what to make of the little-known King story, which...

A Legendary Star Trek Writer Has Died – These Are Her Essential Episodes
Image
On Facebook, longtime "Star Trek" production designers Mike and Denise Okuda announced the passing of Jeri Taylor. She was 88.

Jeri Taylor was one of the key producers and writers throughout the 1990s "Star Trek" heyday, having joined the staff of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in its fourth season. Trekkies will tell you that "Next Generation," having already hit its stride, broke into a sprint in its fourth season, producing multiple capital-g great episodes at that time. Taylor's impeccable writing contributions to "Next Generation" were so widely recognized that she was promoted to the role of co-executive producer of the series in its sixth season, overseeing most of the production alongside head honchos Rick Berman and Michael Piller. In the show's seventh season, Taylor became the full-bore showrunner.

10 Movies That Changed The Book And Made Something Better
Image
Every movie adaptation of a book has to make a few changes, and these changes can often be beneficial. It seems as though it's become common practice for fans of a book to lament the changes that filmmakers make. It's much less common for people to highlight the times when a movie improves upon its source material, although this happens more frequently than people might think.

Some of the best book adaptations do much more than recreate the story as faithfully as possible. While directors and actors can add their own distinct flair, some movies benefit from fundamental changes to the books. Altering characters, cutting unnecessary subplots and changing the ending can all improve an adaptation. Making such drastic changes risks angering the fans of the book, but if it pays off, it can be a huge improvement.

Stephen King's The Shawshank Redemption Named Best Movie of 1994
Image
1994 was a heck of a year for movies. From Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump, to The Lion King and The Crow, audiences were as the kids like to say eating well at the theater. However, there was one film that seemingly came out of nowhere to surprise everyone whose legacy still lives on to this day, as is evident by a recent Rotten Tomatoes fan poll that just crowned The Shawshank Redemption as the best movie of 1994.

Based on the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, the Frank Darabont picture beat out some hefty competition in the poll to take the top spot, including Whoopi Goldbergs Corinna, Corinna, the coming of age dramedy Reality Bites, Wes Cravens New Nightmare, Jim Carreys The Mask, Disneys The Lion King, and finally, Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. With 9,403 votes cast in the finals, Shawshank took down the seminal crime film...

Best John Woo Movies, Ranked
Image
John Woo is one of cinema's great directors and despite making numerous amazing films, he has been absent from American cinema for twenty years. In December 2023, John Woo's Silent Night played across screens nationwide in the United States. Silent Night marked Woo's first American production since Paycheck, twenty years ago, and is a dialogue-free action thriller about a father, who, unable to speak, enacts revenge on his son's killers.

During the 1980s, Woo emerged as one of the most prominent filmmakers of the Hong Kong New Wave film movement. Although his filmography consists of movies categorized by different subgenres of action cinema, Woo's most significant contribution to film history occurred through the heroic bloodshed genre. Woo's highly stylized gun-fu action, explosive mise-en-scnes, and expert use of slow-motion made him quickly ascend the ranks of cinema's greatest action directors.

'Marginal Failure': The Shawshank Redemption Director Recalls Disappointing Theatrical Run
Image
The Shawshank Redemption remains a cinematic classic 30 years after its theatrical release. Director Frank Darabont credited the film's enduring success to critical acclaim and mounting support from audiences.

Director Frank Darabont said the critical praise boosted The Shawshank Redemption's eventual success. Initially snubbed at the box office, the film only gained a following (via word of mouth) after earning multiple nods at the Oscars. "Its initial release wasn't that successful," he told The Daily Beast. "In fact, I wouldn't even call it a success. It was kind of a marginal failure in 1994 yet it became the most rented video of 1995. I think that was for a number of reasons, primarily because it was nominated for seven Academy Awards." That turnaround has since fueled the film's appeal to audiences. "We didn't win a stinking award but it really piqued people's interest," he added.

The Shawshank Redemption Review: One Of The Most Faithful & Effective Stephen King Adaptations Ever
Image
Long before he brought the world of The Walking Dead to screens, Frank Darabont was establishing himself as one of the best Stephen King adaptation directors, particularly with The Shawshank Redemption. The 1994 prison drama was Darabont's second adaptation of a King story, preceded by his short film directorial debut with The Woman in the Room. He would go on to continue this trend with fellow prison drama The Green Mile and 2007's The Mist, both of which are certainly excellent movies, though they still didn't surpass The Shawshank Redemption.

Pivotal Shawshank Redemption Scene Was Filmed in an Actual River of Poop
Image
Director Frank Darabonts The Shawshank Redemption is an endearing classic that has stood the test of time thanks to its universal themes of hope, freedom, and friendship. Tim Robbins was brilliant as Andy Dufresne a man sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife going above and beyond what anyone expected to deliver the performance of a lifetime. While this included playing off the legendary Morgan Freeman, Robbins time on set was also spent in an actual river of "cow poop" in order to capture the films pivotal scene, a testament to just how far he was willing to go for the sake of art.

Speaking with The Daily Beast, Darabont recalled shooting the scene in question, which features Andy crawling through a sewer pipe to finally escape Shawshank State Prison, spilling out into a creek that didnt need any extra dressing to make it look dirty.

‘The Shawshank Redemption’ 30th anniversary: Remembering the beloved 7-time Oscar nominee

Star Trek's William Shatner Says There's Only One Way He'd Allow An AI-Generated Kirk
Image
There's a current Hollywood trend that is wholly disturbing. Many major studios -- but primarily Disney -- have been spending millions of dollars and hiring hundreds of effects technicians, animators, and designers to digitally resurrect dead actors to include in their franchise movies. The film "Alien: Romulus" did this recently, while the movies "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" and "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" hired actors Guy Henry and Bob Gunton to portray characters previously played by the late Peter Cushing and Harold Ramis before digitally altering them to resemble their predecessors. While Cushing's estate and Ramis' family signed off on this, it's still different from a living actor giving their consent to be digitally altered, like Jeff Bridges did for "Tron: Legacy."

The first example of digital grave robbing likely came in 2004 with the release of Kerry Conran's "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow," which featured a digital performance...

10 Comedy Sequels That Are Just As Good As The Original
Image
Comedy sequels are notoriously difficult to pull off, but there are a few exceptions to this rule that have kept fans laughing. Comedy movies tend to derive a lot of their humor and conflict from a particular situation, and once the story is wrapped up, there is no logical reason to bring the characters back for more. This is why a lot of comedy sequels feel overly contrived, or unrelated to the first movie.

While unnecessary comedy sequels have sadly become the norm, this just makes it even more exciting when a sequel lives up to the standards of the original. Not all movies are set up for sequels, but comedy can often get more creative. Audiences will forgive comedies for coming up with silly premises as long as the movies are just as funny. If a comedy sequel gives beloved characters a fun new story that plays to their strengths,...

Matthew McConaugheys 84% Rotten Tomatoes Legal Thriller Is Dominating Paramount+

A 2011 police procedural with a surprisingly star-studded cast has become a surprising win for Paramount+ nearly 15 years later. The Lincoln Lawyer, the legal thriller starring Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei, and Ryan Phillippe, has snuck into the top 10 most popular movies on Paramount Plus, currently sitting in the #8 spot. The Lincoln Lawyer sneakily beats out Shooter, Mark Wahlberg's one-person-army action movie which has also been steadily floating around the Paramount+ top 10, but falls short of other projects like Jack Reacher and South Park: The End of Obesity. In addition to McConaughey, Tomei, and Phillippe, The Lincoln Lawyer also stars William H. Morgan Freeman’s narration played a significant role in taking The Shawshank Redemption to millions of viewers over the years. However, he was paid very modestly at the time for his role as Ellis Boyd Redding, reportedly less than half a million. The film had a low budget of $25 million and did not manage to recoup the budget in theaters.

Shawshank Redemption Star Details 1 Key Way The Movie Improves Stephen King's Story
Image
There are multiple prison wardens in Stephen King's Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, but this is condensed into one in Frank Darabont's film. Warden Norton actor Bob Gunton explains that this decision improves the story because it gives Andy a central antagonist and contributes to the movie's core themes. Gunton's portrayal of the Warden was a major highlight of the film, and it's for the best that King's story was changed.

The Shawshank Redemption star Bob Gunton explains one key change the movie made from Stephen King's novella, and why it was an improvement. Released in 1994, the beloved Frank Darabont film follows Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) as he spends twenty years in Shawshank prison for a murder he didn't commit, serving as an exploration of friendship and hope. The movie, which is based on King's Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption novella from 1982, features Gunton as the sadistic Warden Norton,...
