Brightburn director David Yarovesky considers DC Studios co-head James Gunn a mentor and would be ecstatic to join the fledgling Dcu under TheSuicide Squad and Superman director's stewardship. The filmmaker would also love to make a Brightburn sequel.
Yarovesky revealed his intentions in an interview with ScreenRant. "Am I trying to get into the DC world? Yeah," he declared. "I mean, if the right thing came along. It's just about if the right thing comes along. I'd love to work with James again. He's my mentor. I adore James, and he has been incredible to me. That's really what it is–finding that right thing. But it could happen." The director is thrilled Gunn is helming Superman, which hits theaters this July. He compared the film to Brightburn, essentially a dark interpretation of the Man of Steel's tale.

What if Superman had turned out to be evil? That was the idea explored by director David Yarovesky’s super-powered horror film Brightburn, which was released back in 2019. Even though the movie made under $33 million at the global box office, the budget was low enough (somewhere in the range of 6 to 12 million) that producer James Gunn said they were talking about a sequel just a couple months after the film reached screens. Then we went a long time with no mentions of Brightburn 2 – until production company The H Collective, which was also behind Brightburn, confirmed that a sequel was in development last September. Things got confusing last month when Gunn took to Threads to say there are “no plans at all” for a Brightburn 2 right now… but Gunn has cleared up some of the confusion by revealing that a sequel is unlikely due to a complicated rights situation.

Brightburn looks to be a one-and-done story with the latest update on a sequel all but confirming that a sequel will never happen. James Gunn, who served as a producer on the 2019 movie, confirmed to a curious fan who'd asked that there were talks to make a sequel, but complications with the rights have since made it "unlikely" that this will ever come to fruition.
"I mean we talked about it early on. But the rights are all f***ed up (I only own half) so it’s unlikely that it will ever happen," Gunn stated in a post on his Threads account. This follows a recent update where Gunn said of a possible sequel, "No plans at all for this right now." Gunn's newest comments essentially confirm that Brightburn 2 is dead in the water unless an unforeseen miracle happens.

Don't count on seeing Brightburn 2 anytime soon.
Released in 2019, Brightburn is a horror film that imagines a young boy with superhuman abilities using his powers with sinister intentions. James Gunn served as a producer on the film, which was written by brother Brian Gunn and cousin Mark Gunn. Five years later, a fan of the film asked James Gunn on Threads if a Brightburn sequel would happen, given the "so many unanswered questions" that remain. Unfortunately, Gunn's response stated, "No plans at all for this right now."

Exclusive: We understand that Guardians of the Galaxy alum Sean Gunn is set to take on the role of evil businessman Maxwell Lord in the new DC Universe that’s being overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
The role was previously played by Pedro Pascal in the 2020 movie Wonder Woman 1984.
It’s not clear if Sean Gunn’s Maxwell Lord will make a cameo in brother Gunn’s Superman: Legacy which will go into production next year. The character, as I hear it, will be referenced in the background of Legacy but will appear in future DC projects. A similar motif will occur for other characters in the new DC Universe, the first phase which is named Gods and Monsters: Chapter One. Stay tuned.
Maxwell Lord debuted in 1987’s Justice League #1 created by Keith Giffen, J. M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire. Initially conceived as an amigo to the...

John Cena and Jason Momoa will be teaming up for the upcoming film Killer Vacation. The two actors have certainly made themselves popular figures in Hollywood over the last several years. Cena first came into prominence as a professional wrestler, while Momoa began his career as an actor in 1999 in Baywatch: Hawaii. The two also have major roles in the DC Universe. Though Aquaman and Peacemaker have never encountered each other on-screen, Cena's character has made it clear he's no fan of Momoa's, as made evident by the widely-discussed fish joke from Peacemaker season 1. The two actors also star in the upcoming Fast & Furious sequel, Fast X, which comes out next year.
Variety reports that, after hitting it off on that set, Momoa and Cena now plan to star in a film of their own for Warner Bros. While the studio is keeping most details about the plot secret,...

Jason Momoa and John Cena are set to share the screen in a new movie. Both actors have been cast in an action-comedy film called "Killer Vacation," per Variety. The script for "Killer Vacation" will be written by Mark and Brian Gunn, who also wrote the script for Dwayne Johnson's "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" and "Brightburn." Specific details about the plot remain under wraps, but we do know it's set to be a blend of action and comedy, and sources told Variety that Cena and Momoa were inspired to work together after discovering their "natural chemistry" on the set of the final Fast & Furious movies. Reps for both actors did not immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment.

If there are two action stars that understand the importance of not taking themselves too seriously, they are John Cena and Jason Momoa. Sure, the two of them can headline big action blockbusters, but that doesn't mean they can't do projects like "Blockers," "Slumberland," or "Peacemaker" every once and a while. Perhaps that balance between being talented action stunt-men and being eager to show their silly sides are why they are as charming as they are.
It also sounds like that balance won't be going anywhere anytime soon. Variety reported that the two stars will be joining forces on an upcoming action comedy titled "Killer Vacation." If a movie with that title starring Cena and Momoa isn't enough to hook you, then what in the world will?
Details on "Killer Vacation" beyond its existence are currently a bit slim. That doesn't mean, however, that there's nothing about it for us to speculate about.

John Cena and Jason Momoa are partnering up to star in “Killer Vacation,” a new action-comedy in the works at Warner Bros.
Though plot details are being kept under wraps, one can probably expect a rowdy adventure in the vein of the blockbusters for which both are known. Cena headlined HBO Max’s “Peacemaker” series, a spinoff of his character in 2021’s “The Suicide Squad.”
Momoa has starred as Aquaman in a handful of movies and television series, most recently making a cameo at the end of “Peacemaker.” Other than that brief exchange, the actors have never shared the screen together.
Mark and Brian Gunn, the team behind the Dwayne Johnson-starring “Journey 2: Mysterious Island” and “Brightburn” will collaborate on the script. A director has not been named.

Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” remake is on its way to a commendable Memorial Day weekend debut with an estimated $109 million over the four-day period.
The musical fantasy starring Will Smith and Mena Massoud should uncover about $87 million in its first three days from 4,476 North American theaters after taking in $31 million on Friday. Should estimates hold, “Aladdin” will mark the sixth-highest Memorial Day weekend debut of all time, just behind 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” with $110.5 million.
Guy Ritchie directed the remake, with Smith taking on the role of Robin Williams’ Genie and Massoud portraying the titular hero. Naomi Scott stars as Jasmine, along with Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, and Billy Magnussen. Ritchie also co-wrote the script alongside John August, with Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich producing.
Also debuting this weekend is Screen Gems’ “Brightburn,” which took in $3 million on Friday and is headed for a $10 million four-day start from 2,607 domestic theaters.

The title "Brightburn" refers to a small town in Kansas, Us. It is the place where alien crash land and is raised with love by a set of perfect, wannabe parents whose prayers of having a child are answered in an unexpected way.
Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and her husband, Kyle (David Denman) feel blessed to have a child gifted by nature. They consider the baby, who arrived out of the sky as Godsend. And for the longest time, their son Brandon Breyer (Jackson A. Dunne) seems like a normal, bright child.
But on the onset of adolescence, when teenage rebellion and hormones run thick, Brandon finds himself vulnerable to circumstances beyond his control. He is suddenly given a new calling, one that will find him using his newfound powers of super-strength, super-speed, heat vision, flight, and immunity.
So when the skinny, smart 12-year-old Brandon is harassed by his classmates, he...

Later tonight, the slasher/superhero mash-up Brightburn arrives on the big screen, which was directed by David Yarovesky and produced by James Gunn. The story, written by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, revolves around the Breyer family, who live on a farm in the quiet town of Brightburn, Kansas. Lori (Elizabeth Banks) and Kyle (David Denman) are doing their best to raise their adopted son Brandon (Jackson A. Dunn) properly, but once he hits his pre-teens, it’s painfully aware to his parents that their kid has some major issues that could potentially put everyone in danger if they cannot get Brandon and his abilities under control.

What if Superman was not a benevolent hero, but an evil being with no regard for human life? BrightBurn takes the classic origin story and gives it a fairly entertaining horror, sci-fi spin. The film is produced by Guardians of the Galaxy creator James Gunn and written by his brothers, Mark and Brian Gunn. Their clever premise is used strategically to overcome several shortcomings. The end result is a dark, lean film with bursts of horrific violence and gore. Brightburn doesn't fully maximize its potential, but is good enough to be a crowd-pleaser.
Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and Kyle (David Denman) Breyer are a happily married couple in the small town of Brightburn, Kansas. Their struggle with infertility is solved on a fateful night. Superhero movies have been gaining popularity ever since the first X-Men movie debuted in theaters nearly two decades ago. In the years since, they've become massive pop culture events and it's to the point where my mom now understands what I'm talking about if I say things like Doctor Strange, which is crazy. But after nearly two decades, and with the release of movies like Avengers: Endgame, we're at a point where these movies can't just simply continue to get bigger. So, instead, it's time for reinvention. Enter BrightBurn, which turns something strongly resembling the familiar Superman origin story into a straight-up horror movie. And it works.
Brightburn works with a very simple premise. A married couple who is having trouble conceiving a child through traditional means has their prayers answered one fateful night when a strange alien ship crashes in on their farm. Inside the ship, they find a...

The reviews are in for the James Gunn-produced horror flick “Brightburn,” and while some critics enjoyed the film as a dark alternative to the Superman origin story, others pointed to its “shockingly predictable” story.
“What if Superman started out evil? And what if that was the only idea you had for your movie? Hence ‘Brightburn,’ a wafer-thin exercise in a supposedly new genre called ‘superhero horror,’ but what is really just a body-count flick haphazardly grafted onto a tweaked version of Superman’s origin story — except this version’s isolated farm boy with indestructible (and destructive) alien powers would rather lift a car not to rescue someone but to kill a grown-up who wasn’t nice to him,” TheWrap critic Robert Abele wrote in his review.

What would happen if Kal-El crashed to Earth from Krypton, and grew up to be Michael Myers instead of Clark Kent/Superman? That’s the exact set-up of Brightburn, a nasty, gory superhero horror film from director David Yarovesky. Yarovesky and screenwriters Mark Gunn and Brian Gunn aren’t reinventing the wheel here. They’re not transcending genre, or attempting to take the […]

As someone who has a deep admiration for superhero stories of all types, Brightburn was, as the kids say these days, “100 percent my jam.” It hits all the necessary beats one would expect from an origin story, but once it heads into full-blown horror territory, that’s when Brightburn transforms into a truly creepy and unsettling exploration of just what would happen if an otherworldly entity that had endless powers wasn’t bound to our society by any kind of morality code, and decided to use that to fulfill their darkest impulses.
At the start of Brightburn, we’re introduced to Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and Kyle Breyer (David Denman), who have had difficulties conceiving a child and are desperate to complete their family. One fateful night, a ship crashes on their farm in Brightburn, Kansas, containing what looks to be a tiny infant, and the couple immediately thinks their prayers have been answered.

In 2003, Mark Millar penned a three-issue series of “Superman” comic books that hinged on one big idea: what if baby Kal-El crash-landed not in the American heartland, but in Cold War era Ukraine? David Yarovesky’s “Brightburn” offers a similar twist on the superhero mythos, albeit one less refined and much, much ickier: what if Superman was a murderous asshole? Produced by James Gunn (who has done both actual superhero films and his own twisted “Super”) and written by two of his own brethren (brother Brian Gunn and cousin Mark Gunn), the film’s bent towards revisionist superhero history is certainly compelling, but stuck in the confines of the horror genre, it flames out far more than it flies.
The Gunns’ decision to riff on the Superman story is ambitious enough, and that’s to say nothing of how transparently they go out about it: the film opens on a sleepy Kansas farm,...

Considering how much power Superman wields, it’s often been discussed what it’d be like if he went off the deep end and used his abilities for his own benefit – or for evil. In recent years, the Injustice video games and comics have done a fine job of exploring this concept. Similarly, writer Mark Waid showed us what it’d be like if an analog for the Man of Steel, the Plutonian, walked this path in Irredeemable.
Without having to acquire any licenses from either DC Comics or Boom! Studios, screenwriters Mark and Brian Gunn have managed to bring this idea to the silver screen with the upcoming horror film, Brightburn. Even though their brother, James Gunn, is name-dropped in the marketing campaign, it’s important to note that he serves as a producer. David Yarovesky, meanwhile, handles directorial duties.

What if someone with superpowers akin to Superman decided to use their abilities for evil instead of good? The chilling answer to that question is explored in David Yarovesky's Brightburn, and ahead of the movie's theatrical release later this week, Sony released the film's final trailer, confirming that "evil has found its superhero."

Gunn has backed Brightburn with his production company Troll Court Entertainment. Sony Pictures Entertainment India will release the film in the country on May 24.

James Gunn's BrightBurn is only a few weeks away from hitting theaters and the studio has released some creepy new footage. First, a Red Band extended clip is truly Nsfw and may not be suitable for anybody who has an extreme fear of losing their sight. The second is the latest TV spot, which features some new footage and the Billie Eilish song "Bad Guy." So far, it looks like Memorial Day weekend is going to have some superhero horror to kick off the summer.
The Red Band extended clip from BrightBurn takes place in the diner, which has been teased in previous footage. However, this is the entire three minutes and it has some really uncomfortable moments in it. Director David Yarovesky is going all out in the superhero horror movie about an alien child who lands on Earth, but turns out to be a villain instead of a hero.
