Niki Caro is directing the thriller movie from a script by Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo (Eternals) that topped the Black List in 2017, with Gadot and Schoenaerts set to star. Principal photography is aiming to begin in early 2026, with The Veterans overseeing international sales rights and taking the project to Cannes buyers this month. UTA Independent Film Group, WME Independent and CAA Media Finance are handling U.S. rights.

Gerard Butler is one of those actors who exists in a category all of his own: a subgenre unto himself. 2018’s Den Of Thieves was among the better of Butler’s prolific recent output, the film that introduced the world to the classically Butlerian role of ‘Big Nick’ O’Brien: a grizzled detective in the Los Angeles Major Crimes Unit with a shit-eating grin, a disastrous home life, a chain-smoking cigarette habit, and a distaste for playing things by the book.

The first film established a kind of trashy, brashy take on Michael Mann’s Heat: a two-sides-of-the-same-coin cops-and-robbers relationship between Butler’s Big Nick and Pablo Schreiber's bank robber Ray Merrimen. It was foretold by the Ancient Ones: The Convergence, the day on which three absolutely slamming action movies will be released at the same time in the UK (albeit on different formats), ushering in a new era of sweaty dad bods, car chases, and many scenes where people die in a hail of bullets. And that day is today, folks. April 25, which sees the release of Gareth Evans' Havoc on Netflix, Christian Gudegast's Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera on Prime Video, and Gavin O'Connor's The Accountant 2 in cinemas across the country. The Convergence has been keeping our Chris Hewitt going for some time now, and so on this week's episode of the Empire Podcast, he gets to sit down with the directors of all three films: Evans at 22:24 (approx), O'Connor at 1:03:23 (approx), and Gudegast at 1:39:48 (approx).

But that's not all, no sirree.

Few people have mastered the art of action movies as well as Gerard Butler, and one of his flicks from 2018 that was initially not well-received by critics is making the rounds on streaming seven years later. Butler stars opposite O’Shea Jackson Jr. in Den of Thieves, the heist thriller following an elite unit of the LA Country Sheriff’s Department who set out to stop the biggest bank heist in history on the Federal Reserve. The new action film serves as a sequel to the 2018 film Den of Thieves. Butler reprises his role alongside O'Shea Jackson Jr., with Christian Gudegast returning to write and direct. Following the film's recent release on Netflix, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera has become a hit on the platform, Tudum reports.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera ended its theatrical run on Feb. 20, and it was released on Netflix on Mar. 20, only a month after. It didn't take long for the heist action movie to make an impression because the movie premiered in third spot globally for the week between Mar. 17 and 23.

What's even more impressive is that Den of Thieves 2: Pantera was only released in the U.

Gerard Butler's Nick "Big Nick" O'Brien has one of the best entrances in film history in "Den of Thieves." Upon rolling up to the aftermath of a deadly shoot-out at a local breakfast joint, the profoundly ethically-questionable Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Detective then proceeds to casually pick up and munch down on a frosted donut from a blood-splattered box on the ground.

Big Nick is a lot like the movie around him. Written and directed by Christian Gudegast, 2018's "Den of Thieves" is a sleazy, booze-soaked tale of badly-behaved cops and charismatic robbers that's both extremely derivative (it's "Heat" with a hangover) and so aggressively heterosexual (between all the machismo and gun fetishizing on display) it comes off as homoerotic, but that's also part of the charm. It was an unexpected hit to boot, pulling in more than $80 million at the box office on a $30 million budget in theaters.

There's no denying that Den of Thieves has become a phenomenon. Seven years after the original film, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera arrived to further the story of "Big Nick" O'Brien and Donnie Wilson, which was an accomplishment unto itself. But then audiences responded to the long-awaited sequel with impressive box office receipts, and Lionsgate ordered a third movie. And now Den of Thieves 2 is still sitting in the Netflix Top 10.

In an interview with Cbr, stars Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr. gave their reaction to Den of Thieves becoming a universe. They also discussed revisiting their characters after several years away. What were the challenges they faced in rediscovering Big Nick and Donnie for the second time, especially since there's not such an extended gap between the two movies in-universe?

THR reports that Lionsgate will move ahead with their plans for a sequel to “Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera” after the film’s box office success earlier this month. “Pantera” won its January 10 opening weekend with $15.2 million, with $32 million on its overall theater run. Den Of Thieves 2 has done good business – and Lionsgate has confirmed that Den Of Thieves 3 is pressing ahead.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that the director of both Den Of Thieves films, Christian Gudegast, opted for the risky strategy of announcing that another film was all ready to go and awaiting the studio’s approval. Going public in this way can sometimes backfire if the studio (Lionsgate in this case) doesn’t share your optimism.

But this was a typically bullish tactic from the director of a brace of films about ultra macho cops and robbers who live a high stakes existence that the rest of us mere mortals can only imagine.

“It’s already pitched. It’s already done. We’re ready to go. We’re feeling very good about it,” said Gudegast as Den Of Thieves: Pantera rolled into US cinemas.
