While there have been many disappointments this year, it does not mean that there have been no good movies released this year, and to prove that, we have compiled a list of the best movies that have come out in 2025 so far.

Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera
Image
Gerard Butler is one of those actors who exists in a category all of his own: a subgenre unto himself. 2018’s Den Of Thieves was among the better of Butler’s prolific recent output, the film that introduced the world to the classically Butlerian role of ‘Big Nick’ O’Brien: a grizzled detective in the Los Angeles Major Crimes Unit with a shit-eating grin, a disastrous home life, a chain-smoking cigarette habit, and a distaste for playing things by the book.

The first film established a kind of trashy, brashy take on Michael Mann’s Heat: a two-sides-of-the-same-coin cops-and-robbers relationship between Butler’s Big Nick and Pablo Schreiber's bank robber Ray Merrimen. That frenemy dynamic returns, this time between Big Nick and O’Shea Jackson Jr's heist mastermind Donnie.

Look, nobody’s saying they’re De Niro and Pacino, but the dynamic between Big Nick and Donnie gets more interesting in this sequel,...

The Empire Film Podcast: The Convergence Is Here ft. Gareth Evans, Christian Gudegast, Gavin O’Connor
Image
It was foretold by the Ancient Ones: The Convergence, the day on which three absolutely slamming action movies will be released at the same time in the UK (albeit on different formats), ushering in a new era of sweaty dad bods, car chases, and many scenes where people die in a hail of bullets. And that day is today, folks. April 25, which sees the release of Gareth Evans' Havoc on Netflix, Christian Gudegast's Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera on Prime Video, and Gavin O'Connor's The Accountant 2 in cinemas across the country. The Convergence has been keeping our Chris Hewitt going for some time now, and so on this week's episode of the Empire Podcast, he gets to sit down with the directors of all three films: Evans at 22:24 (approx), O'Connor at 1:03:23 (approx), and Gudegast at 1:39:48 (approx).

Gerard Butler’s 41% Rotten Tomatoes Heist Thriller Steals a Spot in The Netflix Top 10
Image
Few people have mastered the art of action movies as well as Gerard Butler, and one of his flicks from 2018 that was initially not well-received by critics is making the rounds on streaming seven years later. Butler stars opposite O’Shea Jackson Jr. in Den of Thieves, the heist thriller following an elite unit of the LA Country Sheriff’s Department who set out to stop the biggest bank heist in history on the Federal Reserve. Den of Thieves hit Netflix at the start of this month, and although it took a few days, the film has finally earned a spot in the top 10, sitting at #10 at the time of writing. The film also stars Pablo Schreiber and 50 Cent and earned scores of 41% from critics and 63% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

'Den of Thieves 2' Is Even Better Than the Original Movie
Image
When Christian Gudegast's Den of Thieves hit theaters in 2018, it was met with mixed reviews. While some viewers praised the film's gritty action and Heat-inspired heist sequences, others criticized the film for its bloated runtime, generic and predictable plot, and underdeveloped characters. The result? A lukewarm 41% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Fast-forward to exactly seven years later, and its sequel,Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, has debuted and also made its way onto streaming platforms. The sequel has managed to build upon the original, and, drawing on the positives of the first film, now boasts a more respectable 63% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera sees Gerard Butler's case-hardened detective, "Big Nick" O'Brien, pursue mastermind Donnie Wilson (O'Shea Jackson Jr.) across Europe. Rather than sticking to the first film's formula, which stayed local and saw Nick on the correct side of the law, Den of Thieves 2 takes...

The True Story Behind 'Den of Thieves 2'
Image
Leveling up to the international sphere, the sequel to director Christian Gudegast's 2018 film, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, made its debut in January 2025. The film has now made its way onto Netflix, effortlessly stealing a place at the top of the streamer's chart, and taking viewers on yet another high-stakes ride into the world of professional heists. The original Den of Thieves film was praised for its gritty realism, intense action sequences, and intricate depiction of heist operations. While the franchise has raised the bar even higher with its sequel film, the effect of Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is enhanced by the fact that it draws direct inspiration from one of the world's most infamous real-life diamond heists.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is based on the real-life Antwerp Diamond Heist, which occurred in 2003. The robbery, often referred to as "the heist of the century", saw the thieves...

Gerard Butler's Latest Action Film Is Now a Streaming Hit
Image
Gerard Butler started the year right, and it's still going well for him. On Jan. 10, his film Den of Thieves 2: Pantera was among the first movies released this year, and its success continues.

The new action film serves as a sequel to the 2018 film Den of Thieves. Butler reprises his role alongside O'Shea Jackson Jr., with Christian Gudegast returning to write and direct. Following the film's recent release on Netflix, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera has become a hit on the platform, Tudum reports.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera ended its theatrical run on Feb. 20, and it was released on Netflix on Mar. 20, only a month after. It didn't take long for the heist action movie to make an impression because the movie premiered in third spot globally for the week between Mar. 17 and 23.

What's even more impressive is that Den of Thieves 2: Pantera was only released in the U.

Gerard Butler's Action-Packed 2025 Heist Movie Is Dominating Netflix
Image
Gerard Butler's Nick "Big Nick" O'Brien has one of the best entrances in film history in "Den of Thieves." Upon rolling up to the aftermath of a deadly shoot-out at a local breakfast joint, the profoundly ethically-questionable Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Detective then proceeds to casually pick up and munch down on a frosted donut from a blood-splattered box on the ground.

Big Nick is a lot like the movie around him. Written and directed by Christian Gudegast, 2018's "Den of Thieves" is a sleazy, booze-soaked tale of badly-behaved cops and charismatic robbers that's both extremely derivative (it's "Heat" with a hangover) and so aggressively heterosexual (between all the machismo and gun fetishizing on display) it comes off as homoerotic, but that's also part of the charm. It was an unexpected hit to boot, pulling in more than $80 million at the box office on a $30 million budget in theaters.

'Took Us by Surprise': Gerard Butler & O'Shea Jackson Jr. on Den of Thieves
Image
There's no denying that Den of Thieves has become a phenomenon. Seven years after the original film, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera arrived to further the story of "Big Nick" O'Brien and Donnie Wilson, which was an accomplishment unto itself. But then audiences responded to the long-awaited sequel with impressive box office receipts, and Lionsgate ordered a third movie. And now Den of Thieves 2 is still sitting in the Netflix Top 10.

In an interview with Cbr, stars Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr. gave their reaction to Den of Thieves becoming a universe. They also discussed revisiting their characters after several years away. What were the challenges they faced in rediscovering Big Nick and Donnie for the second time, especially since there's not such an extended gap between the two movies in-universe?

Cbr: Den of Thieves writer-director Christian Gudegast told Cbr he had planned multiple movies in the series from the start.

'Den of Thieves 2: Pantera' Tops Netflix Streaming Chart on Debut
Image
Gerard Butler knows what he is doing when it comes to delivering solid action movies, and anyone in doubt about this just needs to look at his Den of Thieves franchise. While the original Den of Thieves is still topping the Freevee chart, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera has debuted at the top of the Netflix chart after its successful box office run at the beginning of the year.

Den of Thieves: Pantera arrived seven years after the first movie, but the absence did make the heart grow fonder for Butler’s Big Nick. As well as impressing at the box office, the film managed to improve its critical review score to 63% (up from 41% given to its predecessor), and continued to please audiences who were waiting patiently for the franchise to return. The synopsis of Den of Thieves 2 reads:

The sequel to Christian Gudegast's 2018 hit,Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, premiered in January 2025 and has now made its way to Netflix. Propelling audiences once again into a world of high-stakes diamond heists, thrilling action, and treacherous betrayals, the film stars Gerard Butler as the relentless Detective Nick O'Brien and O'Shea Jackson Jr. as the crafty Donnie Wilson. The sequel takes everything that audiences loved about the first film, and amps it up, delivering a narrative packed with tension, complexity, and intrigue.

Gerard Butler Action Thriller 'Den of Thieves' Lands on Free Streaming Next Month
Image
One of the best movies in action movie favorite Gerard Butler’s repertoire is heading to free streaming. Released back in 2018, the heist action thriller Den of Thieves finds Butler leading as the hard-drinking, hard-fighting leader of the Regulators, an elite unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. And he’s about to butt heads with Halo star Pablo Schreiber's Ray Merrimen, the leader of an equally elite gang of thieves. Cue the gruff masculinity and explosions.

While Den of Thieves has grown in popularity over the years, the movie was panned upon release, landing a score of just 41% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Den of Thieves is an intense crime thriller directed by Christian Gudegast, and released in 2018. Gerard Butler's Action Film 'London Has Fallen' Is Better Than Critics Say
Image
Quick Links'London Has Fallen' Pits Critics Against AudiencesThe President Even Gets in on the Action in 'London Has Fallen'

Without question, the Has Fallen movie trilogy written by Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt is one Hollywood franchise that should be analyzed and studied. Starring Gerard Butler as Secret Service agent Mike Banning and Morgan Freeman (in various roles), each of the three movies barely passed their budget in North American box office totals and didn’t receive the best praise from critics. Albeit, the first and third films — 2013’s Olympus Has Fallen and 2019’s Angel Has Fallen — actually lead when it comes to the two aforementioned categories. On the other hand, 2016’s London Has Fallen, which sees Banning escort president Benjamin Asher out of the vice of Islamic terrorists, seems to have taken an even greater misstep.

The second action flick in the series not only stands out...

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera may have opened in the #1 spot at the box office with $15 million, but it didn’t take the film long to taper off. Despite stronger reviews than the original from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, the action sequel starring Gerard Butler has failed to even come close to reaching the same box office heights as the first Den of Thieves. As it prepares to exit theaters soon, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera has crossed two final box office milestones, $20 million internationally and $55 million globally, with $36 million coming from domestic earnings. In addition to Butler, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera also returned O’Shea Jackson Jr. to the role of Donnie Wilson, with Evin Ahman, Salvatore Esposito, and Orli Shuka also starring in the Christian Gudegast-directed pic.

Wtf Happened to Den of Thieves?
Image
If we’re holding up the all-time best bank robbery movies, a special place is reserved for classics like Bonnie and Clyde, Dog Day Afternoon, Heat, and a handful more. But when it comes to the most underrated recent cinematic bank heists, Christian Gudegast’s 2018 movie Den of Thieves ranks right up there with the most entertaining and hyper-violent examples like The Town, Point Break, Hell or High Water, and the like. Now that Gudegast recently unloaded Den of Thieves 2: Pantera on the masses this January, it’s high time to reflect on the making of the original.

While a tad long and baldly inspired by Michael Mann’s Heat, Den of Thieves was released in January 2018 to commercial success and middling critical acclaim. For those in the dark, the story concerns a unit of former Marines turned bank robbers called The Outlaws led by Ray Merrimen (Pablo Schreiber...

‘Den Of Thieves 3’: Lionsgate Greenlights Threequel For Their Action-Heist Franchise
Image
It’s time to gear up another heist. THR reports that Lionsgate will move ahead with their plans for a sequel to “Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera” after the film’s box office success earlier this month. “Pantera” won its January 10 opening weekend with $15.2 million, with $32 million on its overall theater run. That’s much less in total box office numbers than its 2018 predecessor ($80 million), but enough for Lionsgate to let writer-director Christian Gudegast make his trilogy.

Den Of Thieves 3 Confirmed With Gerard Butler And O’Shea Jackson Jr Returning
Image
It’s a good time to be a Den Of Thieves die-hard. (They exist!) The Gerard Butler crime-actioner came out way back in 2018 – and this year finally got a belated sequel, Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera, released Stateside in January to a decent US box office reception. And while it’s yet to arrive on UK shores, the early success of the sequel has given its creators the confidence to plough onward with the story of Butler’s ‘Big Nick’ O’Brien: Den Of Thieves 3 has been officially confirmed. ‘Den Of Threeves’, anyone?

The official Den Of Thieves account confirmed the news on social media – and while there’s not much in the way of information yet, there’s much to indicate from the post. The tagging of Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr (Butler’s co-star in Pantera) heavily indicates that both will return for the threequel. Or, as Jackson...

Gerard Butler, Evin Ahmad, and O'Shea Jackson Jr. in Den of Thieves: Pantera (2025)
Den of Thieves 3 officially happening
Gerard Butler, Evin Ahmad, and O'Shea Jackson Jr. in Den of Thieves: Pantera (2025)
Den Of Thieves 2 has done good business – and Lionsgate has confirmed that Den Of Thieves 3 is pressing ahead.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that the director of both Den Of Thieves films, Christian Gudegast, opted for the risky strategy of announcing that another film was all ready to go and awaiting the studio’s approval. Going public in this way can sometimes backfire if the studio (Lionsgate in this case) doesn’t share your optimism.

But this was a typically bullish tactic from the director of a brace of films about ultra macho cops and robbers who live a high stakes existence that the rest of us mere mortals can only imagine.

“It’s already pitched. It’s already done. We’re ready to go. We’re feeling very good about it,” said Gudegast as Den Of Thieves: Pantera rolled into US cinemas.

Image
Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. are set to reunite again in a third Den of Thieves movie.

The actors joined forces for the first time in 2018 and returned for a sequel earlier this year. After Den of Thieves 2: Pantera took the top spot at the box office, it was confirmed that Lionsgate was moving forward with a third movie in the franchise.

According to reporting by Variety, Gerard will return for the new movie, which he will star in and produce through his G-base production company. O’Shea is also thought to be returning.

Earlier this month, we learned that there were plans for at least three more movies in the series.

“While researching heists, the research is agnostic to where it takes place in the world. There are three particular ones that are unreal,” director Christian Gudegast told Collider. “One is in Brazil,...

Den of Thieves 3 is Officially in Development at Lionsgate
Image
Gerard Butler is going to be back in action as “Big Nick” O’Brien in a third Den of Thieves movie. Although nothing is ever certain in Hollywood, Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. not returning for the movie they virtually confirmed themselves while promoting Den of Thieves 2: Pantera was almost unimaginable and less than a month after their No.1 box office hit debuted, the next installment is now official.

While there are not too many details yet, as well as the return of the two franchise leads, according to Variety, Lionsgate and Butler’s G-base banner are looking to have writer/director Christian Gudegast on board to resume his dual role that has served the franchise well so far.

The franchise began with Den of Thieves in 2018, an all-out action thriller that sees Butler’s O’Brien leading a unit from the LA County Sheriff’s Department as they...

‘Den of Thieves 3’ Moving Forward with Gerard Butler
Image
Lionsgate is returning to the thieve’s den. The studio is moving forward with a third Den of Thieves movie, with the decision coming swiftly after the release of Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, which has grossed $32 million domestically and hit PVOD Tuesday.

Gerard Butler is expected to return to star and produce via his G-Base banner, which he runs with Alan Siegel. Tucker Tooley Entertainment will produce the next installment in the action-heist franchise as well, after financing and producing the first film and bringing it to Lionsgate and STX. Tucker Tooley will also produce.

The first Den of Thieves, released in 2018, was a modest hit, earning $80 million on a $30 million budget, but it grew in popularity on the home entertainment market. Still, the disruptions of the coronavirus pandemic, Russian’s invasion of Ukraine and a physical issue from Butler led to seven-year gap between the first and second installments.
