One of the best pictures to come out of Hollywood in the late 1960s, Sydney Pollack’s screen version of Horace McCoy’s hardboiled novel is a harrowing experience guaranteed to elicit extreme responses. Jane Fonda performs (!) at the top of an ensemble of stars suffering in a Depression-Era circle of Hell – it’s an Annihilating Drama with a high polish. And this CineSavant review ends with a fact-bomb that ought to start Barbara Steele fans off on a new vault search.

With more podcasts to choose from than TV shows these days, it can be tough to figure out which one are worth a listen, especially when more and more keep debuting. Luckily, there are some fan favorites and newcomers creating their own unique, fun spaces this fall, and they’re definitely worth a listen.
Here are some of the pop culture podcasts we’re queueing our iTunes up for.

At the inaugural Tribeca TV Festival over the weekend -- which will serve as a supplementary event to the flagship Tribeca Film Festival in April -- YouTube took the opportunity to showcase the work of its Creators For Change initiative during a premiere event moderated by bold-faced creator Todrick Hall.
Creators For Change was established last year and will see the video giant supporting a diverse array of YouTube stars -- led by ambassadors like John Green and Franchesca Ramsey -- who tackle social justice issues in their content. At the Tribeca TV Festival over the weekend, YouTube premiered three new videos from its first class of 27 Creators For Change fellows -- or emerging creators exploring issues like racism, religious discrimination, and xenophobia, Engadget reports. Given that YouTube has committed $1 million in equipment and production grants to fund videos that tackle social issues, this was just the tip of the iceberg.

Protests erupted across the country on Monday morning as Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that President Donald Trump‘s administration would rescind Daca — the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy that offers work permits to people who entered the country illegally as minors.
Multiple demonstrators — including some undocumented immigrants — were reportedly arrested at Trump Tower as hundreds of local immigrants and advocates descended on the president’s midtown Manhattan residence and business headquarters to protest the repeal of Daca. Some of the protestors had staged a sit-in in the middle of the street and were arrested after they blocked traffic...

Perhaps there’s nothing worse than a film with a campy premise that takes itself too seriously. Everything, Everything takes it title from a spoiler alert its lead character Maddy Whittier (Amandla Stenberg) leaves on her blog as she reviews Flowers for Algernon, another story about a chronically ill character (“Love is Everything. Everything”). This is a dull, illogical, yet sincere and well-meaning drama. Sadly, its core audience should demand more from their entertainment.
The sophomore effort from director Stella Meghie — whose debut feature, the delightful family comedy Jean of the Joneses, enjoyed a healthy life on the festival circuit last year and a well-deserved Spirit Award nomination — Everything, Everything crashes by taking itself way too seriously as it chronicles the young love of homebound Maddy and the boy next door Olly Bright (Nick Robinson). Now, thanks to the channel’s latest set of courses, those viewers can untangle the magic of cinema. Crash Course has unveiled three film series: A history lesson hosted by Craig Benzine, a production course hosted by Michael Aranda, and an introduction to criticism led by Lily Gladstone.
All three of the new courses will be produced by PBS Digital Studios, which teamed up with Crash Course co-founders Hank and John Green back in 2014. Benzine, who is becoming quite the regular on Crash Course, will examine how the film industry was shaped by the politics of nations like Germany and Russia; Aranda, who regularly collaborates with the Green brothers, will share the knowledge he has picked up in his experience on film sets; Gladstone, an actress, will marry specific films and filmmakers to...

At last night’s Oscars, both Amazon and Netflix notched historic wins thanks to award winners Manchester by the Sea and The White Helmets. Now that the two most prominent digital distributors of TV- and theater-quality video content have distributed Academy Award winners, which digital platform will be the next one to snag an Oscar? Two interesting candidates for that title, as identified last night, are YouTube and Apple.
Apple’s claim to a future Oscar is backed up by data provided by Gene Munster of Loup Ventures, who shared a bullish forecast with outlets like Variety. The Cupertino-based tech giant has recently fired up its original content plans through shows like Carpool Karaoke, and is it continues to invest more money into video, Munster believes it will reach the level on which Netflix and Amazon currently reside. “We think Apple will win an Oscar in the next five years,...

Coming Through The Rye screens Sunday, Nov. 6 at 12:30pm at The Tivoli Theater as part of this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival. Ticket information can be found Here.
Inspired by events from the filmmaker’s own life, Coming Through The Rye is the poignant and funny story of 16-year-old Jamie Schwartz (Alex Wolff), who in 1969 has landed at an all-boys boarding school for all the wrong reasons. Ostracized by nearly everyone, he clings to the unshakable belief that he will someday play Holden Caulfield — the main character in “The Catcher in the Rye — on Broadway and in the movies. Jamie adapts the novel into a play to put on at school, but after a series of increasingly hostile incidents with students, he runs away with a quirky townie, DeeDee (Stefania Owen), to find the book’s author, J.D. Salinger (Chris Cooper). On their odyssey to find the reclusive writer,...

Emmy-winning director James Steven Sadwith makes his feature-directing debut with a story close to his heart. Coming Through the Rye fictionalizes his experiences as a 1969 boarding-school teen and his adventure finding reclusive author J.D. Salinger. We assume liberties were taken, considering the opening caption loquaciously elongates the usual “inspired by” to “a lot of this is inspired by real events if you want to know the truth,” but that’s okay — this sort of chatty flourish aligns perfectly with the character created as his stand-in. Jamie Schwartz (Alex Wolff) is nothing if not borderline obnoxious in this way. (Think an endearing Max Fischer from Rushmore.) Nerves obviously pull his string while fear and guilt refuse to let it retract — the reasons why coming soon enough.

If movies stopped going to high school, that’s probably because high schoolers stopped going to movies. It was barely a decade ago that we were still basking in the afterglow of the golden age of teen comedies (The French Kiss New Wave), a magical time when all the hair was spiky, all the songs were performed by pop-punk cover bands, and all the graduating seniors were actually in their early 30s (so that Drew Barrymore could more easily slip inside their ranks).
But then the internet happened, emerging from a pubescence of its own, and the Ya boom followed not long after that. Suddenly, high school life was only squeezed on screen in between wizard duels and vampire love affairs, the ghoulish horrors of those hallways made literal through newfangled mythology.

In a massive project that was months in the works, YouTube star John Green has launched a 54-part video series instructing viewers how to vote in every state come Election Day. Green devised the project, he said, because of logistical complications that often dissuade voters from turning up at the polls.
But doing so is critical, he explains. “You can vote for the world you most want to see, or you can vote for the world you think will most likely bring change, or you can vote for just one thing, or based on just one thing -- how you want to vote is up to you,” Green says in the introduction to the anthology -- whose scripts, all told, comprised roughly 30,000 words. But “if you’re not voting, no one is hearing your voice.”

In his opening remarks at the seventh annual VidCon gathering this morning here in Anaheim, Calif., the event’s co-founder, John Green, delivered a fascinating -- and seemingly counterintuitive -- thesis: going viral and amassing subscribers and views, he said, isn’t necessarily a good thing. “We’ve all heard the business maxim that if you aren’t growing, you’re dying,” he said. “But for my career and with our audience, growth has not always been good news.”
He described several downsides to the moment nine years ago when his vlogbrothers channel was featured on YouTube’s homepage -- back when it wasn’t algorithmically generated -- and he and his brother, Hank, started gaining serious steam. With virality, Green said, comments can devolve into nastiness, and engagement tends to wane. “In comments, our viewers are far more likely to refer to me as ‘John’ these days -- whereas when we had fewer viewers,...

Awesomeness Films has acquired the rights to a young adult novel Spontaneous months before the buzzy title has even hit shelves. Spontaneous, written by Aaron Starmer, tells the story of a New Jersey high school senior named Mara whose friends suddenly start to spontaneously combust.
The book has earned the praise of another beloved tween scribe, John Green, who said that Starmer “skillfully welds sharp humor, deep loss, and roaring escapades,” according to Awesomeness Films. Starmer is also the author of The Riverman Trilogy, a murder mystery series, as well as the upcoming Meme, about a group of friends who plot a murder in order to subvert a Columbine-like massacre.

Between May 2nd and May 13th, the College Board hosts the Advanced Placement (AP) exams, which serve as the culmination of year-long AP courses that offer benefits to students once they enter college. Acing these tests tends to require a lot of cramming, and for many students, YouTube is proving to a capable study aid. Specifically, Hank and John Green’s Crash Course channel saw a 41% increase in watch time in the period surrounding AP exams.
The 41% jump is based on Crash Course’s total watch time during the month-long period between April 13, 2016 and May 13, 2016, compared to the previous 31-day period. A visual demonstration of that increase can be seen in this chart, which a representative for Hank Green shared with Tubefilter:

On Friday, Tris and her crew are going to go beyond the wall in the latest film from The Divergent Series,Allegiant.
The Divergent films are just one of the many popular teen novels to be adapted for the big screen, following in a popular trend of dystopian fiction that kicked off with the success of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games series.
However, teen fiction has made for big screen success long before Jennifer Lawrence emerged as heroine Katniss, though The Hunger Games definitely sensationalized the trend of bringing these novels to film. While we had seen it before with films like The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, we can't deny that teen fiction is as popular as ever, and it is making waves both on television and in theatres.
For this week's quiz, we are taking a look at some of the more popular teen novel adaptations in recent years.

John Williams is nominated for his 50th Academy Award as a composer this year. He's won five so far, and rightly so: Williams' contributions to film contain some of 20th century's most recognizable themes. You'd be hard-pressed to find an individual who couldn't warble at least one of his scores, and it's fitting that he's been nominated for his continued work on Star Wars, a franchise that owes at least part of its popularity to Williams's immortal theme. With 50 nominations and five wins, you'd think Williams would be in the running for some Oscar records, wouldn't you? Well, no, actually.

YouTube’s card-style annotations have received a new function. In order to help its creators promote socially-just causes, the world’s top video site has announced “donation cards,” which allow users to give directly to nonprofit organizations.
Donation cards streamline the fundraising process by allowing viewers to contribute to charities without ever leaving YouTube. When you click on a donation card, a series of pop-up windows give you a chance to specify your donation amount and update your payment information. Should you ultimately click “Donate,” your contribution will go directly to whichever charity the participating creator has linked to his or her video. You can experience donation cards for yourself by checking out recent videos from John Green and Madison Beer:
A separate video posted by YouTube provides a visual introduction to donation cards:
“YouTube has over a billion users,” reads a post on the video site’s creator blog.

Alternating between indie-circuit hits (Young Ones) and blockbuster hits (Maleficent), Elle Fanning has worked steadily to emerge out of older sister Dakota’s Hollywood shadow, and she’ll be aiming squarely for the hearts and minds of the Ya crowd in upcoming project All the Bright Places. This morning, producers have announced that Fanning will team with Youth in Revolt director Miguel Arteta for the pic, an adaptation of Jennifer Niven’s novel.
Fanning has been attached to the lead role of Violet since last year. Niven herself is penning the script for the adaptation, which is a priority for financiers Demarest Media and Mazur/Kaplan.
Said Arteta:
“Violet and Finch’s achingly heartfelt and authentic story is the most convincing portrayal of teenage life I have ever come across. It’s such a privilege to bring it to the screen with the help of its engaging author and the...

Ron Moody as Fagin in 'Oliver!' based on Charles Dickens' 'Oliver Twist.' Ron Moody as Fagin in Dickens musical 'Oliver!': Box office and critical hit (See previous post: "Ron Moody: 'Oliver!' Actor, Academy Award Nominee Dead at 91.") Although British made, Oliver! turned out to be an elephantine release along the lines of – exclamation point or no – Gypsy, Star!, Hello Dolly!, and other Hollywood mega-musicals from the mid'-50s to the early '70s.[1] But however bloated and conventional the final result, and a cast whose best-known name was that of director Carol Reed's nephew, Oliver Reed, Oliver! found countless fans.[2] The mostly British production became a huge financial and critical success in the U.S. at a time when star-studded mega-musicals had become perilous – at times downright disastrous – ventures.[3] Upon the American release of Oliver! in Dec. 1968, frequently acerbic The...

It's summer, which means it's time to hit the beach, go on vacations and do as much as possible outside while the weather is nice. Back in February 2015, Reddit announced its first new web series, Cyborg Nation, in conjunction with Wired. But now, the social site is extending its original video content plans even further. Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian revealed the Reddit Video initiative during the TechCrunch Disrupt NY event on May 6, 2015.
Ohanian told TechCrunch co-editor Alexia Tsotsis how Reddit Video will initially aim to turn the site’s famous “Ask Me Anything” (Ama) forum-based text interviews into video versions (previous AMAs have featured YouTube stars like John Green and Felicia Day, among many other participants.) “Video is a pretty hot thing right now, and we wanted to get the best people we could to launch Reddit Video,” Ohanian said, as reported by VentureBeat.
The Verge reports Reddit’s video initiative will bring site users’ stories to the online video masses, as well. Stephen Greenwood and Jordan Oplinger from The Verge are slated to lead Reddit Video.

With nearly 250,000 million active users and more than $2 million in monthly payouts, Patreon has emerged as a viable tool for cash-strapped artists. Now, through a separate crowdfunding platform, Patreon is adding to its roster. It has acquired Subbable, the company founded by Hank and John Green in 2013.
As Patreon co-founder Jack Conte told Tubefilter, the story of the Subbable acquisition begins with Amazon. In 2014, the online retailer made a change to its payment system, which Subbable used. This change was hugely problematic, because it required Subbable to rewrite its entire backend in order to incorporate the new payment system. In addition, the site's users would have to reauthorize payments, which, Conte said, would likely result in a high "attrition rate."
Conte says Patreon and Subbable "have been talking about joining forces for over a year," and Amazon's change gave the two companies the perfect opportunity to finalize the deal. Instead...

This season, Fox has been trying to field new hits by making shows based on pop culture its adult audience can recognize—from the comic book pulp of Gotham to the Ya tragicomedy of Red Band Society, the next gen House of Backstrom to the next gen Seinfeld of Mulaney. In many of these efforts, we see the Fox-Backstrom Theory of Contemporary Generational Conflict at work: Optimistic, crusading Millennials suffer or revolt against the worldview of those miserable, narcissistic elders. In Gotham, idealistic, reform-minded Jim Gordon and older, cynical, that’s-just-the-way-it-is Harvey Bullock bicker and brood as they vainly try to bring justice to Dystopiatown.
