House Of A Thousand Dolls
Stars: Vincent Price, Sancho Gracia, Herbert Fux, George Nader, Martha Hyer | Written by María del Carmen Martínez Román, Harry Alan Towers | Directed by Jeremy Summers
With a title like House of a Thousand Dolls, Vincent Price starring and an opening scene featuring a horse drawn hearse you would be forgiven for thinking that the film is horror based. You soon find out that this is not the case but it may at least be paying a cheeky homage to its iconic star. The fact is though that House of a Thousand Dolls is a very different beast.
While vacationing in the Tangiers a couple meet an old friend searching for his missing girlfriend who is believed to have been kidnapped by a group of slave traders. When the friend is killed the couple are dragged into investigating both the death and kidnapping which appears to...

We’re here to continue our little festival chat and represent another title In Competition for the Golden Lion statue, this year, at 67th Venice Film Festival.
Balada triste de trompeta or A Sad Trumpet Ballad is the movie that comes from Spanish director Alex de la Iglesia, and it’s already been described as the comedy that follows two circus clowns, but it’s definitely more than just a comedy….
Here’s the A Sad Trumpet Ballad synopsis: “…1937. The circus monkeys scream wildly inside their cage while, outside, men kill and die in another circus: the Spanish Civil War.
The Stupid Clown, recruited against his will by the Militia, ends up carrying out a bloodbath with a machete against the National soldiers while still wearing his costume.
And so starts this eventful adventure in which Javier and Sergio, two terrifyingly disfigured clowns, fight to the death for the ambiguous...

#6. Balada Triste (The Last Circus) Director: Álex de la Iglesia Cast: Antonio de la Torre, Carlos Areces, Carolina Bang, Santiago Segura, Fernando Guillén Cuervo, Fran Perea, Sancho Gracia Distributor: Magnolia Pictures Buzz: To be unveiled on the Lido and to be presented in San Sebastian after Tiff, things are certainly looking good for this twisted, dark comedy especially if Magnolia Pictures, a distributor who usually jumps on finished films, bought the pic still unfinished. If you're not sold on the sequences below, then let the buzz from Venice do the convincing. The Gist: Álex de la Iglesia's genius for dark humour is at its most eloquent in his latest parody about the Spanish Civil War. Two clowns attack and disfigure one another in jealous rages over a beautiful dancer. In the name of love, they destroy the very object of their affection. Tiff Schedule: Tuesday September 14 9:45:00 Pm...

There are no funny clowns in Alex de la Iglesia's world. Creepy clowns? Yes. Macabre clowns? Definitely. But jolly, make the kids laugh clowns? Not so much. The first poster art for Iglesia's latest - about to take a bow at the Toronto International Film Festival - and it's delightfully grim stuff. Here's how the festival describes the film:
Alex de la Iglesia's latest feature, Balada Triste (The Last Circus), is a wild and hilarious film that exposes the nature of political conflicts in his country's recent history. Set in a circus, the film offers a pointed metaphor for the Spanish Civil War and the years of Franco's dictatorship. The war and its aftermath have been the subject of many films, but never has the darkness and absurdity of this period in Spain been so eloquently expressed.

Here's a little something odd and I don't mean the movie itself, though coming from director Alex de la Iglesia that's pretty much a given. No, with Iglesia's Last Circus soon to premiere in both Venice and Toronto - making it surely the highest profile film of his career - the first footage of the film has turned up via Spanish website El Pais. That's not odd, either, that's just good business. The odd bit is that instead of just giving El Pais the footage to properly encode and upload they instead a a camera man film the footage off of a monitor, ensuring that it would be washed out and unstable, essentially creating an authorized cam job. And that's just wrong for a film as colorful as this and a film maker as visual as Iglesia. Find the Tiff synopsis for the film below, the video below that and...

Spain Film Scene: Local Alex de la Iglesia's ("The Oxford Murders", "Day of the Beast") latest film "Balada Triste de Trompeta" finished principal photography this month (see pic of director above). This co-production with France's production company La fabrique 2, tells the story of two heavily scarred clowns, Javier and Sergio, that bloodily compete for the love of Natalia, the trapezist. Set in 1973, during the last days of the dictatorship of Franco, the director himself describes the film as a "grotesque tragedy of comedic horror." The film stars T.V comedian Carlos Areces, fresh from the success of its first film "Spanish Movie" and Antonio de la Torre, the critically acclaimed actor of Daniel Sánchez Arévalo's "Gordos", also starring are Sancho Gracia, Santiago Segura and Terele Pávez, all veterans from de la Iglesia's previous films.
