- Suffering from schizophrenia since 1978 when he started to hear voices, in 1983 he attacked his own mother with a hammer, killing her. He was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison in 1984. Because of recent law changes at the time, he couldn't use insanity defense as reasoning to get a minor sentence.
- Won a Grammy Award in Best Rock Song category for "Layla", in 1993, along with Eric Clapton. Gordon composed the piano coda, extensively played in the original version of the song released in 1971.
