Director Martin Campbell Knows Exactly Why His 'Green Lantern' Bombed: The Villain
Image
When Warner Bros. and DC announced that Ryan Reynolds would be starring as Hal Jordan in the big budget adaptation of Green Lantern, with Goldeneye and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell helming, there was a lot to be excited about. However, the resulting film is considered one of the worst of the genre and was a bomb at the global box office when it opened in 2011, earning $237 million against a $200 million production budget.

Speaking with Variety ahead of his next film Cleaner, Campbell opened up about all the reasons why his Green Lantern movie was so awful. It all comes down to enthusiasm for a project, in this case a comic book adaptation. As he explained:

"I'd never done one before. I think quite honestly, if you're going to do a superhero movie, you have to be in that world a little bit, you know what I mean? You have to be excited by it.

'I Wish He Had Written the Script': Green Lantern Director Addresses Ryan Reynolds' Jokes About the Movie
Image
Ryan Reynolds is now automatically linked to the role of Deadpool, which he has played in different forms for over a decade and a half. However, in between his commitment to the Merc with a Mouth, Reynolds played a different superhero in 2011's Green Lantern.

Reynolds first played a different version of Deadpool in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but it wasn't until 2016 that he got his own standalone film the way he had envisioned it. In 2011, he took a role as DC Comics character Hal Jordan/ Green Lantern but the movie wasn't the success Reynolds had hoped, and has spent the last decade poking fun at the movie. Speaking to Polygon, director Martin Campbell revealed his honest thoughts on Reynolds' ongoing mockery of the film.

10 Children's Fantasy Movies That Just Hit Different As An Adult
Image
While children's fantasy movies are usually characterized by their happy endings and light themes, revisiting these projects as an adult can provide new insight into the deeper messages. More often than not, the nostalgic aspects of kids' movies hit harder for older viewers since these narratives are reminiscent of a time gone by. The ephemeral nature of childhood and the unexpected difficulties of adulthood are brought into sharp perspective through the lens of a story meant to entice and enchant young audiences. Occasionally, Easter eggs meant for adults provide a fun hidden layer of meaning for returning viewers to enjoy.

These films come from many different eras and niches, with some fantasy movie box office flops developing into cult classics over time, especially with adults rewatching these projects. Understanding the context and setting of these films is a large part of what makes them special for adults, as these parts...

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix Review: There's Still A Lot To Love In This Underrated Entry
Image
Back in 2007, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was the first movie in the fantasy franchise that I got to see in theaters. I remember how nothing could beat my excitement at actually getting to watch the magic unfold on a big screen, how somehow everything felt fresh and new, even though I had already read the book and knew full well what was going to happen. Now, years later, I've seen The Order of the Phoenix countless times, but it still casts a spell over me.

Exclusive | Oscar-winning writer Eric Roth pitched Contact 2 to Robert Zemeckis
Eric Roth
Eric Roth wanted Robert Zemeckis to make a sequel to 1997’s Contact – but the conversation didn’t get very far.

In a very special episode of the Film Stories podcast, I’ve had the enormous pleasure of chatting at length to Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth. You can find the episode right here…

Early on in the conversation, he talks about working with director Robert Zemeckis, the pair of whom both took home Oscars for Forrest Gump. They’ve reteamed on another movie that’s due later this year by the name of Here, but Eric Roth told me he’d originally approached Zemeckis with an idea for something else.

“I called Bob actually to see if he’d be interested in me writing Contact 2 for him, because I really liked that. I really like that whole arena”.

Zemeckis, in Roth’s words, quickly declined the idea, with difficulties surrounding getting...

Grant Gustin, Ryan Reynolds Nod at Their DC Hero Pasts in TV Spot
Image
Ryan Reynolds’ latest venture involves advertising and numbers, but what really matters is that he’s enlisted the help of a former small-screen speedster.

In the above TV spot for Mntn, “a leader in advertising software that drives measurable conversions, revenue, site visits, and more” (per their website), Reynolds — who is the company’s Chief Creative Officer — invites The Flash star Grant Gustin, who portrayed the titular speedster/Barry Allen for nine seasons, to extol the service’s virtues.

Ryan Reynolds Knows Why Green Lantern Bombed At The Box Office
Image
Before both Marvel and DC created their respective expanded cinematic universes, "The Avengers" changed the way studios approach major franchises, and Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy had even concluded, there was "Green Lantern." The 2011 box office bomb is a black sheep in the 2010s' superhero storm, often derided as an sloppy, corny mess that's more soap opera than space opera. Pre-"Deadpool" star Ryan Reynolds himself is keenly aware of how much of a mess the film is and attributes its critical and financial failures to an overzealous, overinflated special effects budget that eclipsed any drive to craft an engaging story with compelling characters.

The generic, soulless "Green Lantern" reeks of studio interference; the result of Hollywood executives looking to make a flashy, inoffensive product appropriate for mass audience consumption. Puzzlingly, Warner Bros. took the opposite approach it did with Nolan's highly auteurist "Batman" films and manhandled...

All 8 ‘Harry Potter’ Movies, Ranked by Viewers

The Harry Potter franchise is a global phenomenon that has persisted since the final book was released and after its last movie hit theaters. Despite this, it thrives in multiple forms, including theme parks (Universal Studios Butterbeer anyone?), freeform marathons, video games, and re-readable novels.

Related: 18 Best Magical Movies Like ‘Harry Potter’ to Watch Next

Hollywood quickly jumped on board, with the first film released less than one year following the release of the fourth novel. Surprisingly made all the more impressive due to having eight films under their belt without sacrificing character or story continuity; there’s not an outright bad movie amongst them either. Jk Rowling herself contributed creative input for each installment bringing unique flavors and keeping the series alive over a decade later.

So, which is the best Harry Potter movie? It all depends on who you ask or what metric is used.

Greg Berlanti’s ‘Green Lantern’ HBO Max Series Being Redeveloped, Loses Writer (Exclusive)
Image
Click here to read the full article.

HBO Max’s long-gestating Green Lantern TV series is changing gears.

The drama that has been in the works since late 2019 will now focus on John Stewart, one of DC’s first Black superheroes. The series, from exec producer Greg Berlanti, was to originally have revolved around Guy Gardner and Alan Scott and had already cast Finn Wittrock (Ratched) and Jeremy Irvine (Treadstone) as the respective Green Lanterns.

As part of the creative overhaul, writer and showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith has departed the series after completing scripts for a full season of eight episodes. Sources say Grahame-Smith, who signed on as writer and showrunner a year after Green Lantern was announced, chose to leave the project after weathering a number of regime changes at HBO Max, its parent company, producers Warner Bros. Television and now DC Comics.

The decision to refocus Green Lantern arrives...

The Biggest Challenge Contact Faced Was Coming Up With An Ending
Image
According to Vulture, Carl Sagan and his wife, Ann Druyan, spent the early '80s writing a film treatment based on Sagan's 1985 novel, "Contact." After cycling through a few different production companies, a slew of screenwriters, and two directors, the film finally made it to the big screen in 1997. Starring Academy Award winners Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey, the movie was a moderate success, but there were a lot of mixed feelings about the film's ending.

At the beginning of the movie, Ellie Arroway (Foster) is a hard-core skeptic about anything that can't be verified by science, so she spends all her time listening to the skies for proof of intelligent life. Towards the end of the film, she finally encounters extraterrestrials, but cannot provide proof of the experience. Ultimately, Arroway and the audience must choose between faith or science, and a lot of viewers didn't appreciate the ambiguous ending.

‘Arrow’ Series Finale Imports A Major DC Superhero Into The CW
Stephen Amell in Arrow (2012)
Spoiler Warning: This article reveals major plot points from tonight’s series finale of Arrow on The CW.

The Green Arrow is dead. Long live…the Green Lantern?

The 170th and last episode of The CW’s Arrow aired on Tuesday night with a misty farewell to the late Oliver Queen, the stolid bowman played by Stephen Amell for eight seasons on the linchpin show of the so-called Arrowverse. That’s the name of the shared continuity that links The CW’s still-growing list of DC Comics adaptations and, after Tuesday night’s swan song episode, there’s at least a possibility that list might someday include the wielder of glowing green power ring of undreamed power.

A late scene in the finale episode show’s grieving buddy, John Diggle (portrayed by David Ramsey since the show’s 2012 pilot), flattened by the thunderous impact of a compact object that gouged...

Green Lantern Corps Still Wants Tom Cruise as Hal Jordan?
Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
It looks like Tom Cruise is back in the running for the role of Hal Jordan in Warner Bros.' planned Hal Jordan/John Stewart buddy comedy flick Green Lantern Corps.. It's said that last year Cruise turned down the role in the Guardians of the Galaxy-style adventure because the original script had Jordan getting killed off - which didn't sit right with the Mission: Impossible - Fallout star. And today we're hearing that Warner Bros. wants to put all of that back-and-forth behind them and officially snag Cruise as Jordan as soon as possible.

That said, there's currently no word on whether or not this means the powers that be behind the scenes ditched Jordan's death from the new script or if Tom Cruise is just, you know, cool with the plot development now. While Green Lantern Corps seems to be stuck in development hell at the moment,...

Andrew Blair Jan 30, 2017

Sometimes, the best of intentions don't always lead to the best movie. Here are 19 films where everything didn't quite go to plan...

As Alan Parker said ‘no one sets out to make a bad film’. Yet in spite of good intentions, sometimes a project doesn't quite go to plan. We're going to look at a bunch of movies here that aren't always well liked, and give a flavour of the problems the beset them.

So, in no particular order, here are twenty of the films that have ever been made, which are considered by at least one sentient being to be bad. That's not the interesting thing about them....

Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris had written a spec script with a twist on the Robin Hood legend: the Sheriff of Nottingham was the hero, a sort of medieval forensic investigator, and Robin was the bad guy.

It Felt Like Love’s Eliza Hittman & Up the Yangtze’s Yung Chang Among Dozen Selected for ’15 January Screenwriters Lab
Eliza Hittman (was love at first sight for her directorial debut It Felt Like Love) and Yung Chang (a docu-helmer best known for the award-winning portrait of modern China in Up the Yangtze) are just two of the dozen folks/projects invited to the upcoming Sundance Institute 2015 January Screenwriters Lab. The labs work as a testing ground of sorts, with Lab Director Ilyse McKimmie seeing to it that the screenwriters are mentored by filmmaking professionals. I’d wager that a good portion of these projects on paper eventually make it onto the big screen (say about 65 to 70 percent) and about 35-40 percent break into the actual Sundance Film Fest. Not unlike her debut picture, Hittman’s potential sophomore pic Beach Rats features NYC borough backdrop and via a teenage vantage point but is sure to stir the pot with tad bit more destruction. After Up the Yangtze, China Heavyweight, and The Fruit Hunters,...

Sequels abandoned after the film before them struggled
From Green Lantern 2 and Terminator: Salvation 2, to a Cat In The Hat sequel and Batman Triumphant: sequels killed by the earlier film...

Earlier this year, it was revealed that a sequel was in the early stages for the new Pierce Brosnan action thriller, The November Man. Remember it? Probably not: The November Man would go on to flop in the Us, grossing just $25m in the Us, and when it finally made it to British cinemas, it was released on just one screen (presumably to fill a contractual obligation somewhere along the line).

There's been no word yet on the fate of The November Man 2, but the outlook does not seem favourable. It wouldn't be the first time though that a sequel had been loudly mooted before even a first film was released, only to be quietly abandoned when something - usually related to box office takings - didn't go to plan.

Rowling Has Written A Wonderful Script for Potter-Spinoff 'Fantastic Beasts'
Writers tackling the screenplays of their own film adaptations can be a tricky business. Over the years, they've been hit or miss. After all, the writers who created the world's that these films want to explore are often quite attached to their creations. They've taken the time to create this layered universe of characters, plots, subplots, twists, and turns. Suddenly hiring that same person to condense all of that into a two hour movie can lead to lots of in-fighting within a production. But if a film like this year's Gone Girl is any indication, it's something that definitely can be done, and extremely well at that. The writer just has to "get" it. Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) did and, according to producer David Heyman, J.K. Rowling gets it, too.

Rowling has turned in her first ever script, and it's for the big screen adaptation of her Harry Potter spinoff,...

Hot Rumor: Michelle MacLaren Top Contender To Direct 'Wonder Woman' Film
Vince Gilligan and Michelle MacLaren at an event for Breaking Bad (2008)
Big game hunting here in L.A. and I'm hearing from sources that Michelle MacLaren, one of televisions most in demand directors (Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, & Walking Dead) is the top contender to direct Wonder Woman for Warners Bros. Pictures.

In the past day Punisher: War Zone director Lexi Alexander has been pretty vocal about why she wouldn't direct the project and that she pretty much knew who the Warner Bros. has hired. Warner's have made it known that they were searching for a female director, and hopefully they have found it with MacLaren.

"Wonder Woman" is based on the DC Comics superheroine created by William Moulton Marston. The character first appears in All Star Comics #8 (December 1941).

The project is being written by Michael Goldenberg and is set to hit theaters on June 23, 2017.

Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Film selected Ryan Koo, The Summer of Flying Fish director Marcella Said (right ont pic above) and Jordana Spiro (who we sang the praises for with her short 2013 Sundance-preemed Skin) are among the twelve plus participants for the upcoming 2014 Feature Screenwriters Lab (which takes place one week before the actual festival).

At this point, the lab have probably easily broke the one hundred project count (with a good percentage of them panning out into an eventual feature film – see Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station, Andrew Dosunmu’s Mother of George, David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and Andrew Renzi’s Franny as recent examples). The international class of January ’14 (read project descriptions and bios below) will be coached by no other than: Dustin Lance Black, Naomi Foner, John Gatins, Michael Goldenberg, Erik Jendresen, Patty Jenkins and Spaghetti Western fanboy and former lab attendee Quentin Tarantino.

Disney Teams Up with Harvey Weinstein for Artemis Fowl
I honestly didn't think I would see the day when Walt Disney Pictures and Harvey Weinstein would team up for a movie again. It seems like it's even hard for Weinstein to believe. But they have come together again to develop a big screen adaptation of Artemis Fowl. The book comes from Disney Publishing Worldwide’s best-selling children’s fiction series by author Eoin Colfer.

The story is about a 12-year-old Artemis, "who is a millionaire, a genius - and above all, a criminal mastermind. But Artemis doesn’t know what he's taken on when he kidnaps a fairy (Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit) to harness her magic to save his family. These aren't the fairies of the bedtime stories - they're dangerous."

Weinstein had this to say in a statement,

Walt Disney Studios reports it is in development with producer Harvey Weinstein, on the live-action film adaptation of "Artemis Fowl", based on the first and second installments of Disney Publishing Worldwide’s fiction book series by author Eoin Colfer.

Screenplay is being written by Michael Goldenberg ("Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"), with Robert DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal executive producing.

Harvey Weinstein and Disney Bury the Hatchet, Team for Live-Action Adaptation of 'Artemis Fowl'
Harvey Weinstein and Ryan Kavanaugh
Never say never. Harvey Weinstein, who in 2005 left Disney and his Miramax Films following intense disagreements with chief exec Michael Eisner, is now on board for an adaptation of "Artemis Fowl" for the Mouse House. Weinstein, but not the Weinstein Company, is set to produce. Disney announced July 29 that it would be moving ahead with a big-screen, live-action adaptation of the first two installments of Eoin Colfer's bestselling eight-book children's series "Artemis Fowl," centering on a pre-teen boy millionaire and mastermind. Michael Goldenberg ("Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix") is penning the script. Weinstein said in a statement that "If you would have told me five years ago I would be producing a project with Disney I would have thought you were crazy," and also called the "Artemis Fowl" project "special" because his children are such huge fans of the books. Meanwhile, Disney praised Weinstein as "one...

An 'Artemis Fowl' Movie Is Coming, So We Cast The Lead!
Rupert Grint, Matthew Lewis, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Bonnie Wright, and Evanna Lynch in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
After years of being stuck in development hell, Artemis Fowl, the "twelve-year-old James Bond villain" with a heart of gold, is finally coming to the big screen with "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" screenwriter, Michael Goldenberg penning the screenplay for Disney and producer Harvey Weinstein.

We're obviously still a long time away from much more real news about the first movie, which will cover the stories of the first two books of the series, "Artemis Fowl" and "The Arctic Incident," but the most important concern for anyone bringing these books to the screen is casting the right lead.

While it's pretty hard to find a decent 12-year-old actor, we have a few (almost) age-appropriate suggestions to play Artemis Fowl, if producers decide to go with a higher-profile star.

Asa Butterfield

Though the "Hugo" and "Ender's Game" star certainly isn't 12 years-old anymore, Butterfield has the whole Artemis look down.

Disney, Weinstein Adapting "Artemis Fowl"
Harvey Weinstein's TWC is doing something many thought they would never do - teaming with Walt Disney Studios.

The two companies are coming together to produce a live-action film adaptation of Eoin Colfer's children's book "Artemis Fowl".

The story follows a twelve-year-old millionaire criminal mastermind who gets in above his head when he kidnaps a fairy.

The story will be based on the first and second instalments in the book series, while Michael Goldenberg will adapt the screenplay. Robert DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal will serve as executive producers.

Weinstein's decision to reunite with Disney has a lot to do with the working relationship he developed with Disney's new chairman Alan Horn when he was at Warner Brothers.

'Artemis Fowl' Movie: Disney and Harvey Weinstein Team Up to Develop Ya Hit
"Artemis Fowl" is finally getting the big-screen treatment after languishing in development limbo for over 10 years.

The bestselling sci-fi/fantasy series by Eoin Colfer follows the adventures of Artemis Fowl II, a 12-year-old whiz kid from a high-flying crime family. The movie will cover Fowl's shenanigans in the first two books, which include kidnapping a fairy, among other bright ideas. The books, which the author has called "'Die Hard' with fairies," are peppered with similarly supernatural creatures.

The live-action movie is currently in development at Disney, with Harvey Weinstein on board as a producer. Weinstein snagged the rights to "Artemis Fowl" in 2000 when he was the head of Miramax with his brother Bob. It's a little bit of inside baseball, but Weinstein and Disney are surprising bedfellows; things between the Weinsteins and Disney became fairly unpleasant after they sold Miramax to the House of Mouse.

Never one to mince words,...

Disney and Harvey Weinstein Reunite for Movie Adaptation for Artemis Fowl
After having parted ways in 2005, it seemed unthinkable that Harvey Weinstein would ever work with Disney again, but the prospect of a live action adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl (one of Disney Publishing Worldwide’s best selling book series) has the two reunited.

“If you would have told me five years ago I would be producing a project with Disney I would have thought you were crazy,” quotes Weinstein in an article by THR. Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal are set to produce the movie that will follow the first two books, while the screenplay will be written by Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix).

If you haven’t read the books (there are 8, and a few graphic novels too) this is from the writer, Eoin Colfer’s website. I suppose I had better get to reading!

Artemis Fowl is a series of eight science fantasy novels,...

Weinsteins to work with Disney on Artemis Fowl film
Brothers Bob and Harvey are to collaborate once more with Disney, with whom they had an acrimonious falling out in 2004

In Hollywood there are no closed doors, only revolving ones. The Weinstein brothers, Bob and Harvey, are to work with Disney for the first time since the two sides rushed through an acrimonious divorce almost a decade ago.

The siblings' production unit The Weinstein Company is teaming with the Hollywood studio on an adaptation of children's fantasy series Artemis Fowl, by the Irish author Eoin Colfer. The Robert De Niro-produced film will be based on the first and second instalments of Colfer's eight-novel saga, which has sold more than 21m copies in 44 languages worldwide.

Disney and the Weinsteins have not worked together since a row over the release of Michael Moore's George W Bush-baiting documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 in 2004. At the time the studio owned Miramax, the Oscar-winning unit which...

Disney has announced an adaptation of Artemis Fowl under producer Harvey Weinstein.

The studio has a film in development based on the first two books in Eoin Colfer's popular all-ages series.

The Artemis Fowl books centre around the titular 12-year-old genius, millionaire and master criminal.

He gets more than he bargains for after angering the fairies - who are far more dangerous than bedtime stories suggest - in an attempt to save his family.

Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) will write the script with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal serving as executive producers.

"If you would have told me five years ago I would be producing a project with Disney I would have thought you were crazy," said Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company.

Hailed by many as the next Harry Potter, the Artemis Fowl series, by Irish author Eoin Colfer (who has described the series as "Die Hard with fairies"), has over 21 million copies in print in 44 languages, and now the saga of the titular 12-year old criminal mastermind coming to the big screen, thanks to Walt Disney Studios (this is after a failed attempt in 2008, with Jim Sheridan attached to direct). Based on the first two books in the series, Harvey Wienstein is teaming up with Disney to produce the film, written by Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix). Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal are on board as executive producers.
