Transitioning from the 90s heartthrob to a womanizer, Leonardo DiCaprio has recently gained quite a reputation in the entertainment industry. Although famously known for his tear-jerking performance in Titanic and his Oscar-winning role as Hugh Glass in The Revenant (2015), DiCaprio has currently acquired notoriety for dating women younger than 25 years old.

Welcome to a cinematic journey through the untamed and the unyielding. We begin with ‘In A Violent Nature’, a slasher film with a twist. Unlike the traditional slashers, this one is told entirely from the killer’s perspective, providing a unique lens through which we view violence and survival. The movie’s raw portrayal of brutality sets the stage for our curated sequence of films that delve into similar themes. The Revenant Following ‘In A Violent Nature’, ‘The Revenant’ emerges as a natural successor. The whole story of Hugh Glass has been well written about, but ultimately itâ.s stuff of campfire legend...

In terms of how many biographical performances they each include, the 2023 and 2024 acting Oscar lineups are staggeringly different. Whereas only two portrayals of real people (Austin Butler as Elvis Presley in “Elvis” and Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe in “Blonde”) were recognized last year, a whopping 10 are presently nominated, constituting the highest such rate (50%) in five years. What’s more, this is only the third time in almost a century of Oscars history that real-life characters aren’t outnumbered by fictional ones.
This year’s near-record biographical performance rate ranks only behind the 60% ones of 2016 and 2019. Unsurprisingly, three of the four eventual winners in both previous cases belonged to those majorities. This includes leads Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, and Olivia Colman as Queen Anne as well as supporting players Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel, Alicia Vikander as Gerda Wegener, and Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley.

As the ongoing battles in state legislatures over classroom curricula indicate, history – or at least the curation of which stories to teach, and from which perspectives – is subjective. So too is Hollywood’s rich tradition of biopics, which imply to audiences whose lives are worthy of immortalizing on film. Whether in textbooks or onscreen, most of the protagonists of our shared cultural history have belonged to the same demographic: Elvis, Oppenheimer, Jobs, Zuckerberg, Hughes. Those individuals were undoubtedly impactful, but Hollywood has also devoted resources to spotlighting relatively lesser-known white men, such as Jordan Belfort, Frank Abagnale and Hugh Glass (and that’s just one movie star’s filmography).
Biopics about people of color exist, of course, particularly when it comes to undeniable icons like Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali. But one community – the second largest racial or ethnic group in the country – has been particularly underrepresented when it comes...

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn fulfills the promise he made at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, when we spied a metal incubator in the chambers of Sovereign leader Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) that housed the artificial superbeing Adam Warlock. Now in the conclusion of Gunn’s trilogy, Adam emerges – albeit prematurely – from his cocoon, charged by his mother and the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji) with destroying the Guardians and returning Rocket (Bradley Cooper) to the latter, who created Rocket as part of his vile attempts at creating a perfect race.

Since the enormous popularity surrounding Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe has never waned in the seven decades since they both rocketed to superstardom, it’s no wonder that Austin Butler and Ana de Armas sailed to Oscar nominations for portraying them in the 2022 films “Elvis” and “Blonde.” What is odd, however, is that the respective Best Actor and Best Actress hopefuls are the only ones nominated in any of this year’s acting categories for playing real people. While this 90 percent fictional character rate is far from unprecedented, it does stand in stark contrast to the preceding decade’s average of 59 percent and thus raises questions as to why academy voters chose to veer in the opposite direction.

Cocaine Bear is being unleashed in movie theaters this weekend and we’re all very excited. Who doesn’t want to see a killer bear do hardcore drugs and go on a murderous rampage? It’s the Catalina Wine Mixer of all movie synopses! Entertainment feels guaranteed, but it doesn’t appear as though Cocaine Bear is aiming to scare us silly with its killer bear.

Leonardo DiCaprio is one of Hollywood’s living legends and has starred in several high-grossing movies. His movies have grossed about 7.2 billion globally, and his name is a box office earner. Yet, Leonardo DiCaprio has only won one Oscar throughout his 33-year acting career. Yes, that’s right; one! It came as a relief for fans, colleagues, and well-wishers when he finally broke his Oscar curse at the 88th Academy Awards in 2016. In what could only be described as a miracle, the actor won the Oscar for his role as Hugh Glass in the 2015 movie, The Revenant. Like the

The Revenant The Revenant, 11pm, ITV4, Monday, May 23
The weather may be warming up but this tale of a frontiersman bent on vengeance thrusts us back into a bleak midwinter. Even the name of Leonardo DiCaprio's character - Hugh Glass - suggests it might well shatter in the cold. Alejandro González Iñárritu's film excels in its action sequences, in particular, Glass's mauling, visceral encounter with a bear, which will set in motion his revenge mission against bad guy John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). DiCaprio deservingly won an Oscar for his role - something he certainly went the extra mile for, even eating raw bison liver despite being veggie (he reportedly said at the time that "the bad part is the membrane around it"). Although the film relies to a degree on stereotypes, it gets hold of you with an icy grip that's hard to shake.

To make an omelet, one needs to break some eggs. Making a film is only slightly different in that instead of a few fragile shells, you need an entire film crew. For Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the idiom's core idea held true working on "The Revenant." But in the eyes of the daring director, a lot needed to be sacrificed and endured if they were going to make a film about the excruciating journey of Hugh Glass. There was the unpaved mountain road braved to reach the set, the brutal cold, and the decision to film in chronological order and absolutely only in...

Working on Alejandro G. Iñárritu's "The Revenant" was grueling, causing numerous crew members to quit. Leonardo DiCaprio, who would go on to win the Oscar for his rugged performance, confessed in The Hollywood Reporter: "I can name 30 or 40 sequences that were some of the most difficult things I've ever had to do. Whether it's going in and out of frozen rivers, or sleeping in animal carcasses, or what I ate on set. [I was] enduring freezing cold and possible hypothermia constantly."

When Daniel Kaluuya won the 2021 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Fred Hampton in “Judas and the Black Messiah,” he became the 77th performer to be honored for a portrayal of a real person. There has been at least one such case across the four acting categories in 19 of the last 20 years, with the 2017 quartet being the last to all win for playing fictional characters. This year, there are nine nominees with the potential to continue the trend, including two whose real-life counterparts are still living.
In Oscar history, it is most common for a win of this kind to come in the Best Actor category. In the nine decades since George Arliss prevailed here for playing Benjamin Disraeli in “Disraeli” (1930), 27 more lead male champs have followed, and they now account for 30% of all victories in the category. Javier Bardem has earned his fourth career SAG Award nomination for portraying TV icon Desi Arnaz in “Being the Ricardos.” Aaron Sorkin’s latest effort examines a hellish week for Bardem’s Arnaz and Nicole Kidman’s Lucille Ball, as they navigate a scandal that threatens to upend their careers.
Bardem is already a two-time SAG Award winner thanks to “No Country for Old Men.” He claimed Best Supporting Actor for his chilling performance of Anton Chigurh, and the entire cast won SAG’s coveted Best Ensemble prize. He picked up a second Supporting Actor nomination for playing another villain in the James Bond film “Skyfall.”

When Joaquin Phoenix accepted his lead drama actor Golden Globe award on Sunday night, he went against the grain of a trend that has been dominant in the decade that just came to a close. Instead of winning for a biopic — which is how he took home his first acting Globe when he played country legend Johnny Cash in 2005’s “Walk the Line” and won in the musical/comedy actor category — he claimed the gold this time as a fictional comic-book character who becomes Batman’s arch nemesis in the “Joker.”
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been kinder through the years to Phoenix than the Academy Awards voters have. Besides “Walk the Line,” the former child star has been nominated three times for an Oscar for his dramatic performances in 2000’s historical epic “The Gladiator” and 2012’s religious cult drama “The Master,” but he has yet to take home a little gold man.

In the Broadway show “Gypsy” — a biopic about stripper Gypsy Rose Lee — there is a song titled “You Gotta Have a Gimmick.” When you are a Oscar nominee, however, you gotta have a narrative to complement your performance, something you can talk and brag about in interviews and on TV talk shows to prove that you gave your all to the art of cinema.

First of all for those that remember the video game Revenant from 1999 don’t get confused, we’re not talking about remaking the game, interesting as it might be now that two decades have passed and the available technology would make such a game insane. Nope, we’re talking about the movie that made such a huge buzz back in 2015, the same movie that finally got Leonardo DiCaprio his Oscar and was seen as such a gruesome and in some ways controversial picture that depicted the life of Hugh Glass. We all know that the academy loves when actors portray real people. Two years ago was the first time in 19 years that all four acting Oscar winners — Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”), Emma Stone (“La La Land”), Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight”) and Viola Davis (“Fences”) — won for playing fictional characters, which was frankly a minor miracle. But of the four categories, there is one where voters favor real-to-reel performances the most: Best Actor. And that love affair will continue if Rami Malek wins for his turn as Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody” as expected.
Malek would be the 12th Best Actor champ this century to win for playing a real person or a character based on a real person and the second in a row following Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour” (2017). The other 10 since 2000 are:
1. Adrien Brody (Wladyslaw Szpilman), “The Pianist” (2002)
2. Jamie Foxx (Ray Charles), “Ray” (2004)
3. Philip Seymour Hoffman...

Tom Hardy lunges onto megaplex screens this weekend as the super-powerful title character in “Venom.” So we thought it might be a good time to rank the award-winning actor’s Top 10 earlier screen performances, to better appreciate his prodigious talent and impressive versatility.
10. Inception (2010)
In Christopher Nolan’s fantastical sci-fi thriller about a team of dreamweavers hired to break and enter into a businessman’s subconscious, Hardy plays Eames, a master forger and identity thief, with a showboating sense of sartorial splendor and the confident cunning of someone who’s already read the script and knows he’ll awake in good shape.
9. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

Scores on Screen is a column by Clare Nina Norelli on film soundtracks. In Stephen Nomura Schible’s moving documentary Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda (2017), we are brought into the world of Ryuichi Sakamoto, an innovative Japanese composer responsible for not only a myriad of diverse compositional works, but also for the iconic scores of such films as Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence (1983), The Last Emperor (1987), and Gohatto (1999). Shot over the course of five years, Coda allows us a glimpse at the composer at work, be it through traditional means as he notates by hand on manuscript at his Steinway grand piano, or in experimental mode, recording ambient sound in pursuit of complimentary timbres to include in his compositions. We watch as Sakamoto enthusiastically records the tranquil din of rain collecting in a bucket, the crunch of his boots meeting dry leaves on a forest floor, and the strained notes of a...

Most single-shot sequences, aren’t. What you’d swear are single takes are actually seamless edits — but that doesn’t dilute their mind-bending power. Even better: one-take action sequences like the third-act corker in “Atomic Blonde,” which sees Charlize Theron battling scads of baddies in a longform, long-take sequence designed to look like a single shot.
David Deitch’s film is filled with heart-pounding action scenes (Theron cracked multiple teeth while filming the Cold War-set Berlin spy thriller), but it’s that big final battle that action fans will remember. And while “Atomic Blonde” feels fresh, the sequence takes plenty of cues from single-shots that have come before.

Leonardo DiCaprio has portrayed Howard Hughes, J. Edgar Hoover, Hugh Glass, Jordan Belfort, and Frank Abagnale Jr., but he's not done playing real people on the big screen just yet.
Deadline reports that on the heels of the announcement that the recent Oscar winner is gearing up to star in Truevine, DiCaprio is also looking to play famed music producer Sam Phillips in a new movie for Paramount Pictures. The studio just purchased the rights to a book called Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock ‘N’ Roll, and DiCaprio's Appian Way Productions is developing the film adaptation and looking for a writer and director to come on board.
Phillips was the man behind Sun Records, and is described like this in the book:

★★★☆☆ Based on the novel by Michael Punke which is itself based on true events, Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Oscar-winning The Revenant - out now on DVD and Blu-ray - is the tale of a frontiersman named Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his relentless quest for vengeance after his comrades left him for dead in the wilderness of the Louisiana Purchase following his brutal mauling by a bear. As flawed as the source novel, though in different ways, this is a piece of visual and aural ingenuity that impresses more than it moves, feeling as icy and empty as the snow-laden landscape.

Leonardo DiCaprio grunts and winces his way through icy landscapes, while Will Smith strains just as hard in an earnest but worthy performance
In 2001, I saw Alejandro González Iñárritu’s fevered, splintered debut Amores Perros and thought he could become the most exciting film-maker in the world. Fifteen years on, the industry seems to support that view; his films, however, have grown steadily less rewarding. The Revenant (Fox, 15) is a panting, lavishly muscled frontiersman spectacle that recently won him a second consecutive best director Oscar and it’s easy to see why: the expense, expertise and technical athleticism of its construction are showcased in its every head-turning sequence shot, its every Malick-aping tableau of sunlit natural ecstasy. Likewise, it’s not hard to understand how Leonardo DiCaprio won his long-deferred Oscar for playing Hugh Glass, a noble, 19th-century fur-trapper bloodily scorned. The legend of Hugh Glass lives on.
After winning three Oscars, including best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and best director for Alejandro G. Inarritu, The Revenant proved to be one of the best movies to watch in 2016.
Viewers familiar with the movie not only discussed the performance by DiCaprio, but about the story of Hugh Glass, a fur trapper who was left for dead after a bear mauling in the 1820s.
One of the big contributors to this film will have to be historian Clay Landry, who served as a technical advisor for the film. With his help, he advised on the historical accuracy for the time period on the project. The production staff consulted on the details with him from the weapons, clothing, language and even down to the buffalo meat.
Landry has plenty of stories to tell about the production and his contribution to the project.

Inspired by true events, The Revenant focuses on a legendary explorer named Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio). For those of you genre fans out there always on the lookout for interesting horror and sci-fi films to enjoy from the comfort of your own home, March’s VOD selections feature several great indie movies that should make for some entertaining viewings this month.
Ava’s Possessions, a film I really dug out of last year’s SXSW Film Festival, is finally making its way onto VOD this Friday and Emelie, the babysitter thriller from Dark Sky Films, is also getting a digital release that day. The epic sci-fi flick received 11 nominations including Ensemble Cast as well as for Adam Driver (Best Villain) and Daisy Ridley (Best Female Performance). It was, however, shut out in the Movie of the Year category. It was also a very good year for two major comic book-based films, Deadpool (8 nominations) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (6 nominations). Both of those films were nominated for Movie of the Year alongside Creed, Jurassic World and Straight Outta Compton. Now that everyone can exhale, and Leonardo DiCaprio has finally taken home his Oscar, The Revenant Blu-Ray announcement is out, and the film will be heading home on April 19th, with an early release on Digital formats March 22nd.
For now, the release seems special feature sparse, with the only addition mentioned being a “documentary” about life during the film’s setting. You have to imagine there will be more when the film hits shelves.
Whether controversy surrounds DiCaprio’s win, the film’s loss for Best Picture, or the Academy’s attempt to rush Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s acceptance speech, the film is still a magnificent effort, and one well worth owning.

Hot on the heels of a few Oscar wins last night, 20th Century Fox has announced the details and release date for The Revenant's upcoming blu-ray. Come inside to check it all out!
In the time leading up to this year's Oscars, and the film's release, much has been made about the difficult production behind the making of The Revenant. As such, it seems odd that the blu-ray for the movie, coming on April 19th, is incredibly sparse. It comes with only One special feature that delves into the historical aspect behind the events that take place.
Again, it seems like an odd choice, but I guess they want to keep the primary focus on the film itself. Check out all the details below:
Leonardo DiCaprio stars in one of the most talked about films of the awards season with The Revenant, arriving on Digital HD March 22 and on 4K Ultra HD™ Disc,...
