“This is way too dark”: ‘The Office’ Episode That Almost Didn’t Happen Only to Become the Best in the Series
Image
If there’s one sitcom that has mastered the art of combining awkward silences with chaotic laughter, it’s The Office. The beloved mockumentary-style show that made us crack up and laugh hysterically for nine seasons!

From Jim’s pranks on Dwight to Michael’s team-building efforts, each episode was about how they walked the line between hilarity and secondhand embarrassment. But there’s one particular episode that pushed the boundaries of what The Office could be.

Dinner Party: The Office’s masterclass in dark and awkward humor A still from The Office | Credits: NBC

Episode 13 of season 4 is titled Dinner Party, and it felt like a pressure cooker of emotional tension. It kicks off with a classic Michael Scott manipulation: He fakes a last-minute corporate mandate for everyone to work on a late Friday. Minutes later, it’s “cancelled,” so Jim and Pam are now free, which means they...

The Highest Rated ‘The Office’ Episode Doesn’t Even Come Close to the Funniest One Written by B.J. Novak
Image
B.J. Novak might be best known to The Office fans as Ryan Howard, but behind the scenes, he was one of the show’s sharpest writers. His scripts often leaned into the show’s most uncomfortable, chaotic, and hilariously unfiltered moments. And while the highest-rated episodes like “Stress Relief” or “Dinner Party” get all the spotlight, they don’t come close to the raw comedic brilliance of “S*xual Harassment.”

Novak’s writing here is fearless, fast-paced, and packed with unforgettable one-liners. Among all the episodes he wrote, this one stands out as the funniest. Here is why!!

Why is this episode B.J. Novak’s best-written entry on The Office? John Krasinski in The Office (2005) in the S*xual Harassment episode | Credits: NBC

B.J. Novak’s “S*xual Harassment” might not sit at the top of the IMDb rankings, but it easily holds its own among the show’s most iconic episodes.

“I don’t like racist jokes”: Ricky Gervais Vindicated Michael Scott’s True Stance in ‘The Office’ That’s Still Debated
Image
What makes a joke land? Is it the truth? Or just how far the comedian is willing to go? Ricky Gervais would argue that the answer lies somewhere between brutal honesty and tender humanity. He’s the creator of The Office and is known for fearlessly roasting Hollywood at the Golden Globes.

But Gervais is much more than that! He’s one of the best minds we have in the entertainment industry. So, let’s look at what he has to say about humor and see if that helps reshape your perspective about characters like Michael Scott.

Ricky Gervais Suggests That He Should Be ‘Paid Twice’ for ‘The Office’ Spin-Off
Image
While there are seemingly no plans to make an Oz-like drama about Creed Bratton’s life in prison…

…we are soon getting a spin-off of The Office. Sort of. In September, Peacock will premiere The Paper, which is set in the “universe of The Office.” Or, in other words, the planet Earth.

The show won’t feature Jim, Pam or Michael Scott, but it will include former Dunder Mifflin accountant Oscar Nuñez. And within the world of the show, the documentary is being produced by the same PBS team that somehow shot nine years’ worth of footage of a paper company before airing a single episode.

This time, the subject of the spin-off will involve a totally different, yet still paper-based, dying industry. According to the recently-released official logline for The Paper, “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when...

Ricky Gervais: “We don’t want to watch a bunch of idiots have a good time” on the Key Difference Between ‘The Office’ and His UK Version
Image
If someday Michael Scott and David Brent were thrown into Squid Game, the UK boss would make a dark and cringy speech and get eliminated in the first round. Whereas, our favorite Prison Mike would accidentally charm his way to the finals with a “that’s what she said!” joke. And this weird difference is what Ricky Gervais explained in an op-ed for Time.

In a savage take, Ricky Gervais explained why The Office US had to sweeten Michael Scott, whereas David Brent in the UK show was the human version of a paper cut—annoying, painful, yet weirdly unavoidable. As per Gervais, Americans like their cringe with a side of hope, but Brits want their awkwardness served cold with extra misery.

Peacock’s ’Office’ Follow-Up Gets First Look and Title: ‘The Paper’
Image
The next series in the Office world officially has a title — and a premiere date.

The show, in which the documentary crew from The Office lands on a new subject, is called The Paper. It follows the publisher (Domhnall Gleeson) and staff of a historic but struggling newspaper in Toledo, Ohio.

The series, from former Office showrunner Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, is set to premiere in September. Peacock also released the first image from the series, which also shows Oscar Nuñez, who will reprise his role as Oscar Martinez from the earlier series.

Nuñez, Gleeson and co-star Sabrina Impacciatore appeared on stage Monday at NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation to advertisers, and Nuñez related that he talked with Daniels that post-The Office, he imagined Oscar moving to a more cosmopolitan environment.

“Greg heard me and moved Oscar to Toledo, Ohio, which has three times the population of Scranton,” Nuñez said.

‘Dog Man’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, Poppy Liu, Stephen Root, Billy Boyd, Ricky Gervais | Written and Directed by Peter Hastings

Written and directed by Peter Hastings, this delightfully manic animated comedy is based on the best-selling series of children’s graphic novels by Dav Pilkey. As such, the film is a spin-off, of sorts, from 2017’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, which was also based on Pilkey’s novels.

For a U-rated animated comedy, Dog Man has a surprisingly dark beginning. Indeed, it’s basically RoboCop, only instead of a cop and a robot, it’s a cop and his pet police dog (both voiced by Hastings). Sure enough, after an introduction to the crime-fighting pair, they are suddenly caught in an explosion, after which a nurse looks at their mangled bodies and says, “What if we sew the dog’s head onto the man’s body?...

New Muppet Show Revival Rumor Debunked by Disney
Image
Muppet fans won’t be starting the music or lighting the lights anytime soon, according to a new report by US Weekly, which has debunked recent rumors that The Muppet Show is set for a revival by Disney. While whispers about the House of Mouse planning on bringing back Jim Henson’s massively influential puppets for a revival that would have been incredibly meta considering the premise of the original Muppet Show have circulated since April, it seems that there will be no handy work going on inside Muppet Studios anytime soon…at all.

Rumors of The Muppet Show’s revival first surfaced last month, when it was said that Kermit, Miss Piggy, and the rest of the fuzzy gang of colorful characters would be getting a new reboot in 2026. This was said to be coming in the form of a revamp of the original Muppet Show format, with big-name...

Amy Poehler, Alex Cooper, and Joe Rogan could contend for the Golden Globes Best Podcast award
Image
Hollywood is still processing the new Golden Globe category for Best Podcast and what it might mean for the industry. While full eligibility requirements will be announced at a later date, one thing is abundantly clear: your friendly neighborhood pods won't be eligible for this award. The organization is only considering "the top 25 podcasts" to qualify for the six nomination slots.

With that number in mind, we've consulted Spotify's list of the most-listened to podcasts in the United States, to try to get a grasp on who might find themselves nominated at the 2026 Golden Globes.

Many of the top content creators are already well-known in the industry, including former Globe host Amy Poehler (Good Hang With Amy Poehler), who won a trophy for Parks and Recreation. On her podcast, the actress enjoys light-hearted chats with high-profile celebrities as they share stories and laughs — no advice allowed.

On Henry Cavill’s 42nd Birthday, You Should Watch Him Play a Jerk in a Blonde Wig in This Movie From 2007, Stardust
Image
Many fans would’ve forgotten that Daredevil and Superman acted together in a 2007 romantic fantasy film. A young Henry Cavill wore a blonde wig and played the pompous jerk Humphrey in Stardust, a movie starring Charlie Cox. The film is based on a story by Neil Gaiman, with Argylle director Matthew Vaughn helming it.

It is no wonder that you don’t remember seeing him in the film, because his role was relatively small and the film had a star-studded cast. However, Cavill’s breakout role came after this film in the medieval series, The Tudors. His role in Man of Steel in 2013 would earn him international recognition.

“The American version did it even better”: Mike Schur Is Right About ‘The Office’ That Only Steve Carell Would’ve Made Possible
Image
Nearly two decades after its debut, The Office (U.S.) continues to dominate pop culture, and much of its lasting appeal can be traced to one man, that is Steve Carell. Though the series began as an adaptation of the British original created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, it quickly surpassed the original.

According to the show’s creators and cast, the American version succeeded because of Carell’s performance as Michael Scott. True to say, the character could’ve easily been unwatchable, but became one of television’s best-worst bosses. And as someone who helped shape the show, Michael Schur knows exactly what made The Office (U.S.) outgrow its British predecessor.

From Elvis to Saul Goodman? Stars Who Nearly Replaced Steve Carell In The Office!
Image
Actors Who Almost Played Michael Scott in The Office(Photo Credit –Facebook)

Before Steve Carell became the face of The Office as Michael Scott, the role was hotly contested by a slew of actors. Imagine anyone other than Carell delivering classic “That’s what she said” lines or awkwardly steering his staff through cringeworthy team-building exercises. Well, that almost happened! The Dunder Mifflin boss wasn’t always destined to be Carell’s signature character.

In fact, The Office’s producers had a whole lineup of actors in mind for the role before Carell’s comedic genius won them over. But it wasn’t just about his talent, it was his performance in The 40-Year-Old Virgin that convinced NBC to keep the show alive, giving Carell the chance to shine as the most lovable (and painfully embarrassing) boss on TV. So, who else could’ve been Michael Scott? Let’s dive in!

One Star Nearly Came Late to the Golden Globes to Avoid Nikki Glaser’s Jokes
Image
The Golden Globes just announced the date of the 2026 ceremony, for all those award show superfans who like to plan out their TV viewing schedules seven months in advance. Nikki Glaser will be returning to host, and presumably Ricky Gervais will be returning to tweet out worse monologue jokes from his bathtub.

While much of Hollywood seemed to enjoy Glaser’s act, the hype surrounding the comedian’s Golden Globes debut was very much focused on her comedy roast cred. Obviously this made some stars nervous. And, apparently, it made one star in particular very nervous.

Glaser appeared at the TIME100 summit, and revealed that several attendees of the Golden Globes told her afterwards that they were “really, really scared” about what she was going to say, purely because of the Tom Brady roast. But as Glaser pointed out, she’s “hired to be mean” at roasts, whereas at the Golden Globes,...

“He was not a good person”: ‘The Office’ Knew Exactly When to Change Steve Carell’s Michael Scott to Avoid Cancelation
Image
Michael Scott’s evolution into the goofy, heartwarming guy who’s actually good at his job has been quite immaculate to see unfolding on screen. But the jump the creators took from Season 1 to Season 2 was quite big, so big that fans of The Office, who often force their friends and family to watch the series, have to beg them to push past Season 1, because it actually gets better after that.

And it really does. So what really changed, exactly? Well, Michael Scott’s hairline was one thing, and his attitude and personality were also on the list.

Now, on the 20th anniversary of The Office, the show’s creators are finally pulling back the curtain on what really turned things around and how they almost didn’t get the chance to, if they didn’t change certain things. Turns out, a little heart, a lot of rewrites, and a...

As The Office celebrates its 20th anniversary, it’s hard to imagine the TV landscape without it. In fact, Schur was so sure that it wouldn’t work that he almost passed on the opportunity to join the project.

That pivotal meeting with Daniels later shaped Schur’s career and changed the course of television history. Here’s how one strange meeting led to the creation of a cultural phenomenon.

It’s hard to imagine anyone but Jason Sudeikis as the endlessly optimistic Coach Ted Lasso, but believe it or not, he wasn’t the first pick for the role that would go on to define his career. Before Sudeikis laced up Lasso’s iconic sneakers, the part was reportedly offered to big names like Chris Pratt and John Oliver.

Thankfully, they passed, and the rest is history. Ted Lasso didn’t just become a hit AppleTV+ show, it became a cultural comfort blanket and a major milestone in Sudeikis’ career. So, weirdly enough, fans might owe a little gratitude to Pratt and Oliver for giving them the version of Coach Lasso people never knew they needed.

NBC almost cast someone else as Ted Lasso, here’s who they picked first!

Funny how fate works sometimes, what started as a simple ad campaign for NBC Sports turned into one of...

Bleepin’ Seth Rogen joins club of stars who went rogue at award shows
Image
Seth Rogen may not be invited to present at an awards show anytime soon.

The Studio star and co-creator sparked controversy at the 2025 Breakthrough Prize ceremony, held on April 5 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. Often referred to as “the Oscars of Science,” the annual black-tie gala celebrates the world’s leading scientists and attracts a high-powered mix of A-list celebrities and Silicon Valley elite.

Rogen took the stage to present the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics alongside Edward Norton. Norton thanked the event’s major backers — tech billionaires and Breakthrough Prize cofounders Yuri Milner, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sergey Brin. But Rogen took the opportunity to pivot into politics.

“And it’s amazing that others [who have been] in this room underwrote electing a man who, in the last week, single-handedly destroyed all of American science,” Rogen said. “It’s amazing how much good science you can destroy with $320 million and Rfk Jr. very fast.

Johnny Depp’s comeback continues with ‘Day Drinker,’ but will he ever contend for Oscars again? Here’s what recent history tells us.
Image
Johnny Depp once quipped, "I've had about 17 comebacks, and I don’t understand it because I didn’t go anywhere." Well, Day Drinker now marks comeback No. 18.

The three-time Oscar nominee for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Finding Neverland, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street just began production in Spain on the Lionsgate thriller Day Drinker. The plot follows a cruise ship bartender (Madelyn Cline) who becomes embroiled in a criminal enterprise with the titular alcoholic passenger (Depp) and a well-known criminal (Penélope Cruz). The first look photo featuring Depp (above) was released today.

Day Drinker marks Depp's first Hollywood film role since the conclusion of his highly publicized defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard in 2022. Before that, the controversial actor was arrested for assault in Vancouver (1989), for hotel damages in New York City (1994), and for fighting with paparazzi in London...

12 Best TV Shows Like The Office
Image
The sitcom has been around since the earliest days of television, when Lucille Ball, Dick Van Dyke, and Mary Tyler Moore ruled the airwaves. In 2015, there's countless more channels that existed in those days, but even with an endless amount of content to watch at any given moment, many viewers always find themselves drawn back to one particular modern classic: "The Office."

"The Office" originated in the UK, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and starring the former as the insensitive Gm of a paper company. The mockumentary sitcom was adapted for American audiences on NBC in 2005, swapping out Gervais for Steve Carell, then known for his work on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." The show also boasted a supporting cast including future Hollywood icons like John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, and Mindy Kaling.

Not every season of "The Office" has been its best, but the show's lovable characters...

‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Creator Proved Jerry Seinfeld’s Outrageous Claim Wrong With a Single Tweet
Image
The FX comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has made a mark in the sitcom space by its penchant for going against all established tropes. The ensemble comedy goes dark in every episode, and every time one hopes that the makers wouldn’t go to a darker space, they double down and go to a space that feels completely off-limits.

Hence, it was surprising for Iasip creator Rob McElhenney when other sitcom creators and actors such as Jerry Seinfeld crib about ‘wokeness’ ruining comedy. The Seinfeld star grieved about political correctness affecting comedy, citing a storyline from his own show that he claimed would not be allowed to air today, before McElhenney called him out.

Image
Ghosts has been a hit for the BBC in the UK and CBS in the U.S. Now viewers in France are going to get their own version of the comedy series, which follows a group of spooks from different eras who reside alongside a living couple who move into a country mansion.

The French series — Ghosts : Fantômes en Héritage — will drop on Disney+ in France and then play on commercial broadcaster TF1. The show was set up through BBC Studios, the French arm of which produces. It is a version of the Monumental-produced UK series not its U.S. equivalent.

The team behind the French comedy tell Deadline that having become fans of the show and its writing, they stuck closely to the stories from the UK series in their first season, which like its British forbear runs to six instalments. They are, however, already working on a...

What Happened To The Cast Of The Willow Movie?
Image
It seems odd to refer to 1988's "Willow" as "the Willow movie," but that's because every nostalgic intellectual property is ripe for refreshing in the modern franchise era, and "Willow" finally got a sequel streaming series on Disney+, also called "Willow." Over 30 years passed between the two, and that's a lot of time for actors to change or even pass away. Warwick Davis' passion for his biggest lead role without special effects makeup never waned, and his enthusiasm is palpable still as he struggles to get the series reclaimed from the Disney vault into which it quickly vanished (and we know the annoying reason why).

The original movie, written by George Lucas and directed by Ron Howard, was an attempt to do for fantasy what "Star Wars" had done for science fiction, and it even featured groundbreaking special effects, like the first use of digital morphing. It was a box office disappointment in its day,...

Netflix’s ‘The Life List’ Ending Explained & Full Story: What Happens To Alex Rose And Brad?
Image
Grief is a parasite that sits in a mourner’s chest until they actively release it into the ether. Ask anyone who has grieved a loved one, and most will tell you it never really leaves. This phenomenon plays out in films in different forms: in a thriller (Searching), the grief manifests itself in the protagonist’s frenzied search for a reason for their loss; in an action film (John Wick), it breeds a vengeance in the protagonist, who succumbs to violence to release their grief; and in a romance (P.S. I Love You), it becomes a silent spectator to the insurmountable change wrought in the lead who is left behind. Transformation, however, is an inevitable outcome that comes to define the grieving protagonist. In recent years of global uncertainty in the aftermath of the pandemic, shows like Ricky Gervais’s Afterlife, Dead to Me, and Fleabag have charted new...

Quick LinksA Man Died From Laughing While Watching A Fish Called WandaThe Role of Wanda in A Fish Called Wanda Was Written for Jamie Lee CurtisKevin Kline Won His First and Only Oscar for a Fish Called Wanda

1998's A Fish Called Wanda was a zany heist comedy starring Jamie Lee Curtis as the title character. It had a script written by Monty Python alumni John Cleese, who also featured in a lead role opposite Curtis. The movie was a major success in its time and led to accolades for almost all of its major players. Screenwriter Robert McKee references it multiple times in his script-writing manifesto: Story: Substance, Structure, Style and the Principles of Screenwriting. To this day, it's considered by many to be a near-perfect comedy.

Curtis would eventually win an Oscar for the comedy-drama Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), but her performance in A Fish Called Wanda showcases her comedic prowess perfectly.

Where Was The Office Filmed? Every Major Location, Explained
Image
Part of what made the original British version of "The Office" and the early seasons of its American counterpart so engaging was that they both felt so tactile and believable. Sure, the later seasons of the U.S. version of "The Office" weren't its best, but initially, the characters and their interactions felt real, the drudgery of their office work felt real, and that very office itself felt real. No doubt helped by the well-executed mockumentary format and use of mostly unknown actors, this element of realism was part of what made the show as enduringly beloved as it became — everybody, at one time, had a boss like Michael Scott, and everybody had endured the beige, fluorescent hellscape that was the modern office.

It's a testament to the production team's talents on the U.S. "Office" (which Ricky Gervais wasn't involved with) that most of the series was shot on a set.

20 Years of Dunder Mifflin: Why We Still Love ‘The Office’ After All These Years
Image
Isn’t it hoot how a show about the most unassuming of jobs—a paper company, no less—could become a touchstone of popular culture? As we sit here pondering its profound impact, we can’t help but recall Jim Halpert’s poignant line in The Office: “Everything I have I owe to this job—this stupid, wonderful, boring, amazing job.”

Ah, the irony! That’s the sweet spot that makes this NBC classic more than just a comedy—it’s a masterclass in paradox. It captured the beauty of life’s dullest routines, where we see ourselves reflected in the quirky, often maddening characters who spend their days at Dunder Mifflin or Wernham Hogg.

Who knew that a show about staplers, cubicles, and passive-aggressive pranks could become a profound meditation on human connection, vulnerability, and purpose? It wasn’t just a comedy—it was our comedy,...

Ricky Gervais Clarifies 'The Office US' David Brent/Michael Scott Casting Rumor
Image
The Officeintroduced audiences to the "World's Greatest Boss," Michael Scott (played by Steve Carell). But, when the actor left after Season 7, Dunder Mifflin had to find a new regional manager. Ricky Gervais, who co-created the British original series and played its version of Scott, named David Brent, was one actor rumored to take over from Scott. During a recent interview to celebrate The Office's 20th anniversary (feel old yet?), Gervais addressed his potential casting in the US version of the show and put a long-running rumor to rest.

Speaking to The Independent, Ricky Gervais was asked about the rumors surrounding his "failed" audition for The Office to replace Steve Carell. The comedian and actor confirmed that he was in talks to reprize his role as David Brent in the US version. However, press outlets and fans took those initial conversations and the end result wildly out of context. "When...

‘The Office’ turns 20: The 6 classic episodes that helped win the show’s only Best Comedy Series Emmy
Image
Twenty years ago, NBC premiered a new sitcom based on a hit U.K. series. The Office debuted on March 24, 2005, and was not an immediate hit in its initial six-episode run. The show struggled to find its footing out of the block, with several episodes virtually xeroxed from the storylines of its British predecessor created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and transplanted, often clunkily, to Scranton, Pa. But soon enough showrunner Greg Daniels found his groove and leaned into the strengths of his formidable ensemble, led by Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, and Rainn Wilson.

The Office would go on to become a must-see TV staple, running nine seasons and earning five Emmys in 42 nominations — and then becoming a hit all over again as a new generation rediscovered and binged The Office when it hit streaming. Until 2023, The Office held the record as most-streamed series, with more than 57 billion minutes watched.
