Apple Tv’s Attempt to Revive a 39-Year-Old, $25M Harrison Ford Bomb Ended as a Two-Season Disaster
Image
Apple TV+’s The Mosquito Coast drama series premiered with seven episodes in 2021 starring Justin Theroux, Melissa George, Logan Polish, and more. Neil Cross developed the show loosely based on the novel of the same name by Paul Theroux, which was published in 1981. The story follows an inventor who uproots his family on a dangerous quest to find refuge from the U.S. government, hitmen, and cartels.

Upon release, The Mosquito Coast, critics believed that even though the show was visually very impressive, it lacked direction in terms of narrating the stories of the characters in the show. It failed to impress the audience and critics. The show has a very unique connection to Harrison Ford.

20 Years Ago, A Panned Ryan Reynolds Box Office Hit Kept The Horror Remake Craze Alive
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"It was a story that was definitely worth retelling. There are legions of fans out there that would love to see this story told." Those are the words of Ryan Reynolds speaking with RadioFree.com in 2005 about the "Amityville Horror" remake, which came about right as he was rocketing up Hollywood's A-list. "The first one, with all due respect to the people that were a part of it ... I just don't think it stood the test of time at all."

Whether or not one agrees with Reynolds' sentiment about 1979's "The Amityville Horror," which was inspired by an infamous true story, Hollywood was ready to sign on the dotted line based on this logic at the time. Not only was Reynolds a rising star,...

Young Tourists Find Themselves in a Waking Nightmare in This Brutal and Underappreciated Horror Movie
Image
When it came out in 2006, Turistas generated primarily negative reviews, and the film still retains a crushing 19% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Looking back at it and its major themes now, it seems like it's time to admit: this film, directed by John Stockwell and starring Melissa George, Josh Duhamel and Olivia Wilde, isn't as spectacularly bad as it was painted originally. Rather, it was put down in a major way by the release of Eli Roth's Hostelearlier that year.

Ryan Reynolds’ Shocking Unscripted Slap To Child Actor Resurfaces Amid Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni Drama

Throwback To When Ryan Reynolds Accidentally Slapped His Young Co-Star (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Ryan Reynolds is back in the headlines, and this time, it’s not about Deadpool or his bromance with Hugh Jackman. Social media just dug up a throwback interview where Reynolds casually admitted to slapping a child actor—on camera, unscripted.

Before you start suspecting Reynolds going full method actor, let’s clarify—it happened during the filming of The Amityville Horror (2005). He played a dad who slowly lost his mind, and in one scene, things got a little too authentic.

Ryan Reynolds later recalled how he accidentally slapped his young co-star, Jesse James, in an unplanned moment. And while he immediately felt terrible, the kid apparently thought it was awesome. Meanwhile, the script supervisor? Crying. Just another day on set!

A Real Body Washed up on This Horror Films Set

What could make a horror movie even more terrifying than it already is? Imagine if the horrors on screen suddenly became real. 10 Most Underrated Comic Book Movies of All Time
Image
Since the 1970s, comic books have inspired some of the most successful Hollywood movies of all time, a trend that began with Christopher Reeve's portrayal of Superman. Although not the first film to adapt a comic to the big screen, Richard Donner's Man of Steel film signified a shift away from low-budget serials to box office hits. In the years since, movies like Tim Burton's Batman, Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, and the smashing success of the MCU have taken the world by storm.

While many associate the superhero genre with comic book adaptations, they aren't exclusively centered around caped heroes. Everything from gangster epics to gritty horror movies has come from comics, but it's not uncommon for some of these to be underrated by audiences. In a golden age of comic book adaptations, it's worth looking at the stories that did their source material justice.

10 Differences Between The Amityville Horror Movie & Book
Image
The Amityville Horror has become a staple of the horror genre, but there are numerous differences between the original book and the two films it directly inspired. Based on a supposedly true story of a haunting in upstate New York, Jay Anson's book The Amityville Horror became a smash hit when it was released in 1977. This inspired 1979's cinematic adaptation of the same name. Starring James Brolin and Margot Kidder, the success of the film spawned a decade-spanning Amityville Horror franchise. The first film would be remade in 2005, with Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George in the lead roles.

Although both versions of the horror movie are based on the true story from the book and share the same characters, there are some notable differences between the book and the films it inspired. This ranges from the lore surrounding the haunting to the specifics of the event itself. There are...

10 Best Time Travel Movies That Don't Involve Sci-Fi
Image
Movies like Triangle and Palm Springs prove time travel isn't just for sci-fi; it's used creatively in horror and romcoms too. Time travel in Harry Potter and Run Lola Run is used as a tool to show different ways that the action could unfold. About Time and Groundhog Day use time travel to explore deeper themes, proving that the trope can be emotional and thought-provoking when handled with care.

Time travel is usually associated with the sci-fi genre, but there are plenty of movies which have elements of time travel without necessarily being classified as sci-fi. Time travel is one of the oldest sci-fi tropes, since it taps into the human desire to rewrite the past and to predict the future. The best time travel movies use the concept to explore universal themes of mortality, determinism and power.

Most time travel movies are sci-fi, since they require time machines like...

Why Melissa George's Sadie Harris Left Grey's Anatomy
Image
Sadie Harris brought chaos to Seattle Grace, causing tension and conflict with key characters. Despite nepotism, Sadie couldn't succeed, suggesting she was a troublemaker who wouldn't change. Melissa George unexpectedly left Grey's Anatomy, leaving fans questioning her departure.

With so many characters coming and going through the doors of Sloan Grey Memorial Hospital, it can be hard for them to make a lasting impact on fans of Grey's Anatomy. However, this wasn't the case for Sadie Harris, an arrogant surgeon who enjoyed ruffling some feathers while trying to save lives. Harris also had some key ties with other members of the then-Seattle Grace Hospital, making her a catalyst for trouble.

Although actor Melissa George received a positive response for her role in the hit ABC medical drama, she left the show suddenly and didn't return to explain her absence. As such, many fans wondered why she left so unexpectedly and...

6 Other Experimental Slashers to Watch Before ‘In a Violent Nature’
Image
Even after decades of masked killers armed with increasingly ludicrous weapons, cinemagoers still flock to theaters to experience the raw thrills of watching homicidal maniacs hunt the most dangerous game. And while there’s nothing wrong with filmmakers choosing to rely on tried-and-true formulas when depicting classic cat-and-mouse conflicts, the sheer amount of these movies means that horror fans often find themselves wishing for riskier takes on these familiar ideas.

Thankfully, there are some brave filmmakers out there that use of the basic premise of a slasher as a jumping off point to tell more creative stories. A recent example of this is Chris Nash’s highly ambitious In a Violent Nature, a Friday-the-13th-inspired horror film told from the melancholy perspective of the undead killer himself. And with the film impressing genre fans with its artsy reinvention of common clichés, we’ve decided to come up with a...

30 Days of Night (2007) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
I don’t know of many Christmas horror adaptations. Sure, I could probably look at the history of Krampus and piece something together but other than that I’m hard pressed so let me know in the comments what I could cover next holiday season. Winter in general has all sorts of movies and stories that they are based off of. The very first episode of this show was all about The Thing and its source material Who Goes There and now in the middle of winter, at least in Colorado, I think it’s time to look at one of the better vampire properties of the 2000s and a great limited series comic. 30 Days of Night was originally pitched as a movie but when it was turned down, the comic came out and put the author’s name on the map. As is the nature of Hollywood, it...

Great Comic Book Movies With No Superheroes
Image
Comic books have long been a great source of inspiration for Hollywood, and the 2010s saw the genre reach its peak through the MCU and Dceu. Based on the classic superheroes of DC Comics and Marvel Comics, these movies raised the bar on what a great blockbuster could be. However, not every comic book movie features superheroes. Many of the most beloved and acclaimed comic books have nothing to do with superheroes and lean more into genres like sci-fi, thriller, and horror.

Comic books are a diverse medium, and some comic book movies are so grounded their audiences aren't even aware of a comic book inspiration. Regardless, it's important to remember that the comic book industry is more than just superheroes, and some of the greatest stories have been told through unique comics. Hollywood shows no sign of quitting comics to tell their best movies, and it's important to remember...

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Amityville Horror (2005) was Written and Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

‘Home Economics’ Canceled At ABC, ‘High Potential’ Moves To Fall 2024

ABC is making some changes to its lineup following the resolution of the writers strike.

Comedy Home Economics has been canceled after three seasons, and new drama High Potential has been moved to fall 2024.

Triangle Ending Explained: The Definition Of Insanity
Image
2020 might have been the year of the time loop movie, but Christopher Smith's 2009 horror film, "Triangle," is one of the best to ever do it. The underseen film has seen a resurgence in popularity as the time loop film as a style of storytelling has expanded beyond classics like "Turn Back The Clock," "The Twilight Zone," and most famously, "Groundhog Day." In "Triangle," a young mother named Jess (Melissa George) is struggling to adjust to raising her autistic son, Tommy (Joshua McIver), on her own. She has a planned day trip on a friend's boat, but strange little coincidences occurring throughout the day start to feel like devastating inevitabilities. As time continues to loop and realities begin to fold in on each other, making sense of the film can feel overwhelming if you're not used to the timey-wimey weirdness of a film like "Triangle."

10 Underrated Female-Led Movies You Need To Watch
Image
Barbie became the highest-grossing movie of 2023, not because it was a toy-based film, but because it had entertaining storytelling from a female perspective. However, some great female-led movies have been overlooked. For example, Birds of Prey is a fun and colorful film with a female team-up that didn't perform too well at the box office. Another example is Death Becomes Her, which was initially negatively received despite its fun gothic aesthetic, campy performances, and progressive themes.

While there's still a lack of big-budget films with female main characters in Hollywood, there are several underrated female-led movies waiting to be discovered by new audiences. Films such as Women Talking, Nomadland, and Little Women all feature powerful female characters in the lead roles, including performances from Academy Award-winning actresses. Barbie was also a monumental step in the right direction, as few non-superhero movies of this scale have female leads. Those are, of course,...

Pike’s Girlfriend In Strange New Worlds Is Great But Star Trek Says It Can't Last
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 4 - "Among The Lotus Eaters"Captain Batel (Melanie Scrofano) is a great girlfriend for Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but Star Trek canon says this relationship sadly can't last. Batel was introduced in Strange New Worlds' series premiere. She is the Captain of the USS Cayuga, and Strange New Worlds season 2 later established Batel is an officer in Starfleet's Judge Advocate General's office.

Captain Batel had to follow her orders to arrest Pike's Number One, Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn), in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1's finale, and Batel served as the prosecutor at Una's court-martial in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 2, "Ad Astra Per Aspera." Despite the friction this caused between Batel and Chris, they maintained their relationship until Pike torpedoed it in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 4, "Among the Lotus Eaters.

Anthony Anderson at an event for Shrek Forever After (2010)
ABC Kills 4 Pilots, Including ‘Public Defenders’ With Anthony Anderson, But Delays Decision on ‘The Good Lawyer’
Anthony Anderson at an event for Shrek Forever After (2010)
ABC has opted not to give series orders to four pilots, including legal drama “Public Defenders” starring Anthony Anderson, but will decide the fate of three other pilots, including “The Good Doctor” spinoff “The Good Lawyer,” at a later date, the network confirmed Friday.

The other pilots that won’t move forward to series include the medical drama “The Hurt Unit,” starring Benjamin McKenzie and Melissa George, the Ellie Kemper-led comedy “Keeping It Together” and “Judgement” with “Sex/Life” star Sarah Shahi.

ABC Signature will shop “The Hurt Unit” to other platforms and 20th Television will try to find new homes for “Public Defenders” and “Judgement,” Deadline reported.

‘Home Economics’, ‘The Rookie: Feds’ & Backdoor Pilot ‘The Good Lawyer’ Still In Limbo At ABC
Image
ABC still has some decisions to make on its scripted slate.

The network has yet to make final calls on renewals for comedy Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.

It comes after ABC passed on four of its pilots: Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.

Deadline understands that ABC is unlikely to make all of these decisions until the writers strike is over and the future of the fall season is clearer. A decision on Home Economics may come first out of the three.

ABC Pilot Watch: Comedies ‘Public Defenders’ & ‘Motherland’ Remake ‘Keeping It Together’ & Dramas ‘The Hurt Unit’ & ‘Judgement’ Not Moving Forward
Image
ABC is passing on its pilots.

The network has passed on Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.

ABC Signature is, however, planning to shop The Hurt Unit to other networks and platforms, while 20th Television will be shopping Public Defenders and Judgement.

The move comes as it still has decisions to make on series Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, which was a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.

Last month, ABC handed a series order to Drew Goddard’s pilot High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson. The project, which is based on the popular French detective series Hip, was the clear front-runner all development season.

Star Trek: Picard's Touching Final Scene Let The Cast Improvise For 45 Minutes
Image
This post contains spoilers for the series finale of "Star Trek: Picard."

The final episode of "Star Trek: Picard" -- called "The Last Generation" -- begins in the middle of an action-movie-style crisis. Starfleet has been infiltrated by a Borg brain virus that had assimilated thousands of young people at the same time. Now compromised, hundreds of Federation vessels have their weapons trained on an enormous starbase, ready to kill everyone. Meanwhile, the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" have gathered on a reconstructed Enterprise-d and charge out to Jupiter where a secret Borg base is hiding. Only once they are able to explode the Borg base, very much the way one might a Death Star, can the brain virus be erased and the assault ended. Also, they would save Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), the son of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), and finally slay the evil Borg Queen (voice...

Captain Pike's 3 Strange New Worlds Love Interests Explained
Image
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) may not be the sort of infamous lothario that Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) was, but he’s had a few important romantic relationships. Originally played by Jeffrey Hunter, Pike was the commanding officer of the USS Enterprise in the first pilot episode for Star Trek: The Original Series, "The Cage." Hunter declined to return for the second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," and was replaced by Shatner's Kirk. Pike - played by Sean Kenney under heavy makeup - played an important part in the Tos season 1 episode "The Menagerie," but otherwise became a Star Trek footnote.

Captain Pike's stature in the franchise grew exponentially when Mount took over the role in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, which took place about a decade before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. Discovery's version of Pike...

‘The Amityville Horror’ Is a Mid-Tier Update from the 2000s Remake Boom [The Amityville IP]
Image
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

Nearly a decade after the last Dtv entry, The Amityville Horror finally returned to theaters. This was thanks, in large part, to the success of Platinum Dunes’ 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre which kicked off a wave of horror remakes..

TCM 2003 set the precedent for the look and tone of many of the aughts remakes. This is clearly visible from the opening murder montage of director Andrew Douglas’ film: staccato editing of grainy archival footage set to an industrial score. This isn’t your mother’s true crime story; this is amped up, gritty, and slightly desaturated-looking. It’s MTV music video chic by way of Se7en.

The Amityville Horror remake doesn’t offer much new storytelling because it is,...

Sex and the City 2 Repeated A Bad Friends Storyline
Image
Sex and the City 2 took Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her best friends to Abu Dhabi, and while they went through a couple of adventures there, it gave Charlotte (Kristin Davis) a storyline that repeated one of Friends’ worst. After Sex and the City came to an end in 2004, viewers reunited with Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha (Kim Cattrall), and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) in the 2008 movie of the same name and two years later in the sequel simply titled Sex and the City 2.

Two years after Carrie and Mr. Big’s (Chris Noth) wedding, the four friends traveled to Abu Dhabi as Samantha worked on a PR campaign for an Arak sheikh’s business, and while Miranda was excited about it and (for once) had nothing to worry about, Carrie had some thinking to do about her marriage and Charlotte worried about leaving Harry (Evan Handler) with their two daughters and their new nanny,...

‘The Hurt Unit’: Ashley Romans Joins ABC Pilot In Recasting
Image
Exclusive: Ashley Romans (Y: The Last Man) has been cast as a series regular opposite Ben McKenzie, Melissa George, Michelle Ortiz and Augustus Prew in ABC’s medical drama pilot The Hurt Unit. She replaces Bull alumna Jaime Lee Kirchner who had been originally cast in the pilot, written by Matt Lopez and John Glenn and to be directed by Marc Webb.

According to sources, Kirchner exited over creative differences during production. Her scenes will be reshot with Romans. While unfortunate, recastings are relatively common and a part of the pilot process.

The Hurt Unit follows a highly skilled team of trauma surgeons and nurses led by Danny (McKenzie), a self-made surgeon, who race into the field to treat the patients who won’t make it to the hospital in time. When the sick and the injured can’t get to the ER, the Hurt Unit (Hospital Urgent Response Team) brings the ER to them.

All 4 Actors Who Played Captain Pike In Star Trek
Image
The original Star Trek Captain, Christopher Pike has been portrayed by four actors in TV and movies, and in two different timelines. Pike predates James T. Kirk (William Shatner) as the Captain of the Enterprise, but his version of Star Trek never made it to series. NBC demanded Star Trek be retooled, and Pike was a casualty of the changes. Yet Captain Pike returned in Star Trek: The Original Series, the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies, and the Starfleet exemplar has found new vitality in Star Trek on Paramount+.

Captain Pike is defined by the tragedy that befalls him when he is no longer Captain of the Enterprise. Pike is horribly disfigured and confined to a wheelchair when he rescues Starfleet Cadets during a freighter accident, where Chris is bombarded by delta radiation. Star Trek: Discovery season 2 retconned Pike to have a detailed foreknowledge of his dark future, and...

The Best Winter Horror Movies to Watch in the Cold Months
Image
When folks say they love winter, typically they refer to the earliest months of the season, with winter beginning on Dec. 21 in the northern hemisphere. In those early days of holiday cheer, there is something familiar and comforting about the cold. But eventually the bright lights go away, and the wind howls louder. Eventually, all you’re left with is icy darkness.

Perhaps that’s why so many of the best horror movies are set during the winter season! Utilizing folks’ fear of barren bleakness, and the tedium of being trapped inside becoming lethal, filmmakers who run the gamut from Stanley Kubrick to John Carpenter have imprinted our worst nightmares onto the snow. Below is a list of their frozen works.

30 Days of Night (2007)

They have lived in shadows long enough. They are the last of their kind. But above the Arctic Circle there’s a party going on,...

Mulholland Drive Ending, Explained
Image
Content Warning: this article contains discussions of suicide and depression.

The jaw-dropping ending of Mulholland Drive delivers more questions than answers, but it's a fascinating study of the psychology behind dreams. David Lynch's 2001 film follows two strange women who cross paths in Hollywood: one is an aspiring actress full of dreams and promises, and the other has just barely escaped a lethal car crash and lost all her memory. Together they uncover the ugly truth about the beauty and fame that surrounds them and develop a romance capable of altering reality.

David Lynch's surrealist storytelling comes in handy since the majority of the movie takes place inside a dream. Mulholland Drive is a thriller at its core but often flirts with horror elements and offers an absorbing romance that feels like a dangerous game, establishing a distinctive neo-noir atmosphere. With its nonlinear narrative and its vast array of characters,...

A 1986 movie, The Mosquito Coast, starring Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, and River Phoenix, also inspired the television series, which is essentially a prequel to both the book and film.
