Why Kunal Nayyar Drove His Big Bang Story Co-Stars Crazy On Set
Image
Years after "The Big Bang Theory" wrapped up its 12-season run on CBS, the sitcom is as popular as ever ... and Jessica Radloff, who wrote a definitive book about the series, is running a recap podcast devoted to Chuck Lorre's massive hit. During the May 12 episode of "The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast," Radloff sat down with Kunal Nayyar, who ended up playing main character Raj Koothrappali after a near-miss, and the actor revealed that he constantly ruined takes by laughing at his co-stars.

"I was the worst in the beginning on the show," Nayyar told Radloff. "I broke all the time. It really pissed everyone off, but I couldn't help it. I don't know why." From there, though, Nayyar singled out one particular co-worker with whom he happened to share a whole lot of scenes: "Simon is a genius. You know what I mean?"

"Just the cadence in which [he said] 'Friday works for me,...

“He knew I was an unemployed actor”: Jim Parsons’ Worst Date With His Husband Todd Spiewak
Image
Before The Big Bang Theory launched him into stardom, Jim Parsons was a struggling actor, and his most awkward first date ended up being with the man he’d one day marry: Todd Spiewak. Picture this: an unemployed actor, a dinner laced with quiet judgment, and a vibe that screamed “this is going nowhere.”

Parsons has since spilled the beans about just how cringey that night was. But somehow, from that rough start came one of the most solid relationships in Hollywood. Proof that even the worst first impressions can lead to sitcom-worthy love stories.

Jim Parsons turned his cringiest date with Todd Spiewak into a love story Jim Parsons in The Big Bang Theory | Credits: CBS

Jim Parsons once tried to impress his now-husband, Todd Spiewak, with a gift, and it almost turned into the worst date of his life. Parsons recalled during a 2022 interview with Logo,

Kunal Nayyar Knows Exactly What Happens To The Big Bang Theory Characters After The Finale
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

In the spring of 2019, "The Big Bang Theory" came to a close after twelve seasons and as many years ... so where did all of the characters end up? In brief, Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and his wife Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) share a Nobel Prize for their work in super-asymmetry, Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) and his wife Bernadette Rostenkowski (Melissa Rauch) are married with two children, and Leonard and Penny Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco) are married and expecting a baby. Then there's Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar), who, despite the fact that he's always looking for love, ends up alone.

In a piece in The Hollywood Reporter after the series finale of "The Big Bang Theory" — titled "The Stockholm Syndrome" as a nod to the city that's home to the Nobel ceremony — all of the lead performers were asked about the show's ending,...

Why Sheldon Cooper Always Knocks Three Times On The Big Bang Theory
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Everyone who's ever watched "The Big Bang Theory" knows that every time Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) enters a dwelling, he has to knock on the door exactly three times, sort of like a very particular vampire. But why does he do this, and how did the writers come up with it?

In Jessica Radloff's 2022 book "The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series," some of the writers and performers who worked on "The Big Bang Theory" explained the origin of Sheldon's three-knock system, which boils down to this: it started as an innocuous thought by writer and producer Lee Aronsohn, who just thought it was funny, but in season 10 of the show, Sheldon tells Penny (Kaley Cuoco) the real reason behind the triple knock. As Sheldon reveals, he walked in on his father...

The Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper Is Based On A Real Person
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Sheldon Cooper, one of the main characters on "The Big Bang Theory" who's played by Jim Parsons, is ... unique, to say the least. Some, including a few of his onscreen friends like Leonard and Penny Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco), might use a different word, like "difficult," "stubborn," or "impossible" (and those are just a few of the kind ones). Seriously, though — Sheldon has a decently kind heart underneath all of his intellectual superiority and bluster, though he doesn't show it very often, preferring to lambast his loved ones over their career choices, whether or not they have advanced degrees, and a whole host of other things. I say all of this to illustrate how absolutely wild it is that, apparently, Sheldon Cooper was inspired by a real person. (Also, his name was originally "Kenny," but that's another story for another time.

Jim Parsons Has Met His Match: Tbbt Fans Want This Friends Character to Challenge Sheldon in a Heated Debate on Evolution
Image
There are a few characters in sitcom history that come to mind when one would be asked to share their list of the most sore losers out there. Sheldon Lee Cooper would surely rank rather highly on the list.

Hailing from The Big Bang Theory, the character has carved out an image of an eccentric man, has a propensity to be very literal, and, most importantly, has an inflated sense of self-importance. These traits make it difficult for the star to come face-to-face with the chances of being proved wrong. And that is why a chat between him and Phoebe Buffay would be quite the spectacle.

Phoebe Buffay is in a league of her own (and so is Sheldon) Phoebe Buffay is one of the few people you would hate to face off in a discussion || NBC

The Big Bang Theory's Kunal Nayyar Was Blown Away By One Detail On The Show
Image
Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) undergoes a major transformation on "The Big Bang Theory," especially when it comes to his appearance. However, while Raj's ever-changing style is a testament to the show's ability to make every character look and feel unique, the character isn't the most aesthetically pleasing element of the sitcom in Nayyar's eyes.

During an interview with TV for the Rest of Us, the "Big Bang Theory" mainstay revealed that he was in awe of the show's set designs. What's more, he was especially enamored with its recreation of the comic book store, which Raj frequently hangs out in with Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg), Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman), the latter of whom is set to receive a "Big Bang Theory" spin-off.

"That's a real comic book store built on set. Fascinating. We just got an Emmy nomination in art...

Kaley Cuoco faced an underwhelming reception following her 2013 SAG Awards appearance, especially due to her bangs that the actress adorned with a gorgeous red Romona Keveza dress. However, it wasn’t really a fashion choice, as she later revealed that the bangs were more like a prop to cover the injuries that she sustained on the set of The Big Bang Theory.

During an appearance on the late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Cuoco revealed how an on-set prank caused her to wear the bangs, which she claimed nearly ruined her career.

Chuck Lorre Absolutely Nailed One ‘The Big Bang Theory’ Character’s Story Arc Which Only a Few Fans Have Understood Until Now
Image
The Big Bang Theory received critical acclaim during its twelve-season run. The series was praised for the performances of its cast, led by Jim Parsons, with his story arc as Sheldon Cooper being universally loved. However, one supporting character, who grew increasingly important in the later seasons, remains divisive among the fanbase.

On social media, fans of the sitcom discussed the story arc of Stuart Bloom, a quirky comic shop owner, initially introduced as a recurring character in the second season. However, fans have conflicted feelings about the direction his story went in, with many misunderstanding the character completely. Here is what most fans get wrong about Stuart’s arc in The Big Bang Theory.

Why Penny Was The Only Big Bang Theory Character Name-Dropped In Young Sheldon's Series Finale
Image
In the series finale of "Young Sheldon" — the first major spin-off of "The Big Bang Theory" that wonders "what if Sheldon, but young?" — we see the on-screen return of "old Sheldon" as played by original "Big Bang Theory" star Jim Parsons. We also hear about one of Sheldon's dearest friends, Penny Hofstadter, played on Chuck Lorre's massively popular CBS sitcom "The Big Bang Theory," by Kaley Cuoco. Specifically, we learn that Penny babysits Sheldon and Amy's kids.

Executive producer Steve Holland spoke to Variety after the episode aired to discuss why they chose to mention Penny over Sheldon's other friends from "The Big Bang Theory," including Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg), Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar), or even Penny's husband (and Sheldon's best friend) Leonard Hofstadter, played by Johnny Galecki. "We didn't want to go with the whole cast," Holland explained. "And we also wanted to keep it on Sheldon and Amy and their kids' relationship,...

“It was cathartic to write something like that”: The Roseanne Episode Chuck Lorre Admitted Was Humiliating for John Goodman’s Character Was Based on His Life
Image
Roseanne is certainly one of the most underrated series from Chuck Lorre’s vast career. Although he has been behind shows like The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, and Dharma & Greg, which have gone on to make great reputations for themselves, there are also lesser-known gems that many do not know about.

The series has an exceptional cast of familiar and unfamiliar actors, ranging from Johnny Galecki and Laurie Metcalf from Tbbt to Roseanne Barr and John Goodman. Although the series did not do as well as his other works, it seems to be a lot more personal to Lorre’s real life.

This is best seen in an interview that the producer gave, where he talked about an episode that was very personal to him.

Roseanne and family conflicts

The feelings of pride and financial struggle being tied together are very rarely explored in sitcoms.

The Big Bang Theory: Leonard Kissing Penny and His Cringe Behaviour Is Not Something I Want to Watch Again

What could have been a recipe for disaster ended up being the most unforgettable part of the beloved sitcom. However, even a couple as sweet as them wasn’t free of shortcomings.

Whether it was Penny inviting her brother to stay without consulting Leonard, or Leonard secretly fixing her paper, the two had their fair share of moments that proved love isn’t always textbook-perfect. The Conners Was a Good Revival — But If They’d Honored Roseanne History, It Could’ve Been Great
Image
The Conners far exceeded anyone’s expectations — including my own. Having risen from the ashes of the Roseanne revival in 2018, this quasi-spinoff went on to run an astounding seven seasons, falling just two seasons shy of matching its predecessor’s original nine-season run. But along the way, the powers that be began to play fast and loose with continuity. Rather than embrace the franchise’s rich history, they often wrote around it (or worse, forgot about it entirely).

Right off the bat, the revival disavowed canon and resurrected Dan Conner. Quite frankly, it was the only way forward. But then...

After more than three decades, the Conners have held their final family meeting in that kitschy midwestern living room. The Roseanne spinoff celebrated its series finale tonight with one final nod to the matriarch while acknowledging that life is still good for this working-class clan.

Below, executive producers Bruce Helford, Dave Caplan and Bruce Rasmussen talk about their decision to reference Roseanne in the final episodes, and how Laurie Metcalf’s unexpected display of emotion changed the final scene for the better.

Deadline: Before we dive into the episode, Dave Caplan, it’s time to acknowledge your Ph.D that is listed in the credits.

Dave Caplan: Yeah. I finished my degree. It’s in media-related psychology. It’s how storytelling affects its audience.

Tomorrow, the credits will roll on The Conners for the last time when the series celebrates its grand finale. During that time, we got to see a new generation of the Conners enter their young adult years, while favorites like Sara Gilbert’s Darlene and Lecy Goranson’s Becky continued into adulthood. At the same time, there were a few beloved characters from the flagship production who fans were upset they never got to see in the follow-up chapter.

'Hit A Wall:' The Big Bang Theory Actor Says The Show Fumbled Her Character
Image
When The Big Bang Theory debuted in 2007, Sara Gilbert frequently appeared on the show as Dr. Leslie Winkle. But over time, the character just faded away with little explanation.

During an appearance on The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast, Gilbert explained why she thinks Leslie slowly disappeared from the sitcom. "I think the writers kind of hit a wall with the character, probably also because she leaves these dynamics quickly, you know, then kind of like, well, what do you do now?," she said. "[Leslie's] wired like that, and she left, and then there's no more story there, really. But yeah, it was a blast, and I like to work, so I'm always happy to show up."

Gilbert, whose character worked as a physicist in the same laboratory as Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Howard (Simon Helberg), and Raj (Kunal Nayyar), also revealed whether she would be open to appearing...

Our whole universe is in a hot, tense state right now. Thankfully, Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki have reunited to give us something to smile about.

Six years after The Big Bang Theory’s 2019 series finale, TV’s erstwhile Leonard and Penny Hofstadter are together again in a commercial for Royal Kingdom. How Jim Parsons Really Feels About Sheldon Cooper's The Big Bang Theory Ending
Image

"The Big Bang Theory" came to a close after 12 seasons and the same number of years in May of 2019, and just like that, stars Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Kaley Cuoco, Melissa Rauch, and Mayim Bialik — who played Sheldon Cooper, Leonard Hofstadter, Howard Wolowitz, Raj Koothrappali, Penny Hofstadter, Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz, and Amy Farrah Fowler, respectively — were finished with the roles they'd inhabited for years. Ultimately, the story of "The Big Bang Theory" ends happily; Sheldon and Amy win a joint Nobel Prize in physics for their groundbreaking work in super-asymmetry, and despite a few speedbumps, all of Sheldon's friends go to Stockholm to support him during the ceremony. So, what did Parsons think of the finale?

In a post-finale feature in The Hollywood Reporter, all of the actors shared their reactions, and Parsons brought up something that...

The Big Bang Theory Cast Said This Episode Was Their Favorite To Film
Image

Filming a multi-camera sitcom with a live studio audience is probably pretty fun, and when it comes to Chuck Lorre's hit CBS series "The Big Bang Theory," the cast has been pretty clear over the years that one (very good) episode in season 7 was particularly delightful to film.

In Jessica Radloff's 2022 book "The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series," main cast members Jim Parsons, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar and Mayim Bialik — who played Sheldon Cooper, Howard Wolowitz, Raj Koothrappali, and Amy Farrah Fowler — fondly look back on filming the season 7 episode "The Scavenger Vortex," where Raj sets up a scavenger hunt for his friends and goes all out. So how did the episode even come into being?

Co-executive producer and writer Eric Kaplan explained that his brother did a lot of group scavenger hunts,...

What Johnny Galecki Would Have Changed About The Big Bang Theory's Cancellation
Image

It's never easy to say goodbye to our favorite sitcoms, and it has to be pretty tough for the people who make them as well. After working long hours together for years, it all just comes to an end, and the creative families of cast and crew are scattered to the winds.

On a series as long-running as "The Big Bang Theory," which went on for 12 seasons and just as many years, saying farewell really had to hurt, but it was made all the more painful because it was so sudden. The show was still wildly popular when it ended in 2019, which left many fans scratching their heads and wondering why it was over, but star Jim Parsons, who played neurotic nerdy genius Sheldon Cooper, had simply had enough.

When it came time to renegotiate new contracts for the show moving forward,...

This Scrapped Big Bang Theory Character Would Have Completely Changed Sheldon Cooper
Image
The early stages of development on "The Big Bang Theory" were a total mess. The original unaired pilot, for instance, had a different actor playing Penny before Kaley Cuoco came aboard. There was also no sign of Raj (Kunal Nayyar) or Howard (Simon Helberg), and even Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon's (Jim Parsons) apartment looked darker and more depressing. The final "Big Bang Theory" pilot we're all familiar with was the result of countless focus group screenings and many rewrites.

One particularly important revision involved Leonard and Sheldon's friend/co-worker Gilda (Iris Bahr). Whereas Penny was rewritten and recast after the unaired pilot, the Gilda character was erased from the series entirely. It's hard to argue with the choice, though, as Gilda's presence would've dramatically changed the way Sheldon came across. Indeed, in the unaired pilot, it's established that Sheldon and Gilda had sex at some point, a revelation...

The Richest “Big Bang Theory” Cast Member: Jim Parsons Is the Wealthiest Actor With $160 Million Net Worth
Image
Jim Parsons’ early days on the block, as it happens with budding actors, were filled only with appearances in a handful of commercials and some indie films. Mainstream success seemed like a distant dream until 2007, when The Big Bang Theory would change everything. Now, he’s become one of the richest actors on TV.

Parsons found his love for performing at an early age – his first major acting moment was playing the Kola-Kola bird in a school production of The Elephant Child. Little did his teachers know then that this young performer, influenced by the likes of Family Ties and The Cosby Show, would one day command one of the highest salaries in the history of television.

Warner Bros. TV Chief Dishes on Whether Classic 'Big Bang Theory' Characters Will Appear in the "Very Funny" Spin-Off
Image
Although Max's The Big Bang Theory spin-off, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, has been in development for years and still has yet to receive an official green light, Warner Bros. Television's Chairperson and CEO Channing Dungey is feeling positive about where the series is going. In a wide-ranging interview with Deadline about the company's many small-screen programs, she was asked about the status of the show now that a title has been announced, and the cast has come in for an informal table read. We're still a ways away from seeing the return of the characters from Chuck Lorre's sitcom universe, but she assured that work is still going apace for the creative team. Moreover, she believes a decision on the Kevin Sussman-led show could finally be coming soon, given the status of the scripts, and it could involve some fan-favorites returning.

Image
A third The Big Bang Theory spinoff is currently deep in development at Warner Bros. Television. While Max isn't quite ready to pull the trigger and greenlight Stuart Fails to Save the Universe yet, the proposed spinoff has received a promising update.

Warner Bros. Television Group CEO Channing Dungey touched on the status of Sftstu during her expansive interview with Deadline, noting that the team behind the spinoff remains "hard at work writing stuff, and Zak [Penn] and Bill [Prady] are working. We’ve seen some material at the studio, and we’ve had some creative conversations with Max, so we are hopeful for good news soon." Dungey also reveals that the scripts she has already read are "creative, they are imaginative, and they are, most importantly, very, very funny."

The Big Bang Theory Star Is “Happy” No One Tried Making His Spinoff Like Jim Parsons’ Young Sheldon

Spin-offs have become a common way to extend the life of a beloved television show. And with Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, Chuck Lorre is all set to give new meaning to Kevin Sussman’s Stuart Bloom. But while Sussman is excited for his new project, not every Big Bang actor is eager to see their character in a standalone show.

In an interview, Simon Helberg, who played Howard Wolowitz, shared that he was relieved that no one attempted to make a spin-off of his character.

This was obviously in contrast to Jim Parsons, whose role of Sheldon Cooper lives through the successful Young Sheldon. Let’s dive deeper to understand why Helberg didn’t want a spin-off of his character.

Why The Big Bang Theory's Original Pilot Gave Penny A Different Name
Image
"The Big Bang Theory" has been an insanely profitable franchise for CBS, having spawned 12 seasons and 2 spin-off shows in the process. But as is the case with most cable television success stories, its fate lies upon the reception of its pilot episode. You need a good hook that could reel viewers into wanting to spend time laughing with these characters every week. Series creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady had some of the right elements in place for the show's first pilot, but there was no way "The Big Bang Theory" would have amassed its legacy had it been aired.

There were a number of bizarre choices in that unaired pilot, as laid out by /Film's Nina Starner, that signal a very different kind of sitcom from the one we ended up getting. Among one of the most notable changes is that of the female lead. Before Kaley Cuoco was brought onboard as Penny,...

“You couldn’t Pay me to marry a cheater”: One Episode in The Big Bang Theory Will Forever Be Etched as the Show’s Worst Penny-Leonard Moment
Image
Since the very beginning of The Big Bang Theory, Leonard and Penny were destined to be together. Their journey was filled with ups and downs, but they found their way back to each other, eventually getting married.

However, their wedding was tainted by a confession from Leonard that completely ruined the moment, making it one of the worst in the couple’s history on the show.

Throughout the series, Leonard and Penny work hard on their relationship, learning to accept their flaws and embracing each other as they are. But this revelation not only spoiled their special moment, it also doused the entire episode and left a lasting disappointment for fans.

8 Big Bang Theory Moments That Have Aged Poorly
Image
This article contains a discussion of sexual assault.

Don't get mad at me, but not every aspect of "The Big Bang Theory" has aged perfectly. Stop booing! Please!

Let me lead with this. There are definitely things about "The Big Bang Theory" that aged well enough, and clearly, the show is still a massive hit; at the end of 2024, it was still one of the most-streamed programs around. Kaley Cuoco's Penny may have gotten a raw deal in the pilot — which isn't conjecture, because the show's creative team literally admitted that it's true — but by the end of the series, there's zero doubt that Penny is extremely smart and capable and not just another stereotypical ditzy blonde character. Adding Amy Farrah Fowler and Bernadette Rostenkowski, played respectively by Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch, was a great idea and gave the show a fresh point of view when they joined...

The Big Bang Theory Episode That Fans Won't Stop Asking Mayim Bialik About
Image
In the fifth season of Chuck Lorre's hit CBS sitcom "The Big Bang Theory," audiences are presented with a very familiar situation: Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and his girlfriend Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) are fighting. This time, it's because one of Amy's academic papers is going to be published in a scientific journal — Amy is a neuroscientist, which Sheldon often directly tells her isn't as impressive as his work in theoretical physics — and Sheldon isn't sufficiently excited, disappointing Amy. After getting advice from his friends Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki), Sheldon, accompanied by Penny, goes to a jewelry store to pick out a gift for Amy that he hopes will smooth things over. When he presents her with a tiara, Amy is so excited and so stunned that she basically forgets about her disappointment altogether.

According to Bialik, fans love talking to her about this episode,...

How Much Would Sheldon And Leonard's Apartment In The Big Bang Theory Cost?
Image
If you were to make a list of most desirable sitcom abodes, it is highly unlikely that the Pasadena apartment shared by Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) in "The Big Bang Theory" would be anywhere near the top 10 -- not when you consider how many sitcoms were set in mansions, like "Benson," "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," and the dream home of every kid in the 1980s: Edward Stratton III's video game-laden estate in "Silver Spoons" (which had a miniature train that traveled in and around the house). But if you were looking for comfortable accommodations in that area of Southern California and didn't have the coin to buy a house, a unit in Los Robles Apartments would likely treat you right (aside from the broken elevator).

Some sitcom apartments are notoriously beyond the reach of their fictional tenants' means, but Pasadena isn't the West Village of Manhattan.

'I Just Refuse to Believe That It's Done': The Conners Stars Lament Roseanne Spinoff Ending After 7 Seasons
Image
The final season of The Conners has begun airing on ABC. While fans have known since last May that Season 7 would be the show's last, series leads Laurie Metcalf and Lecy Goranson still cannot believe that the Roseanne spinoff is finally coming to a close.

"There's a lot to wrap up and I think the writers are really working hard to get everybody's storylines sort of ... not completed. It's not going to have a big bow tied up with the Conners," Metcalf, who plays Jackie Harris, told People about the show's final six episodes. "And it will remain true to their storyline, what happens to them in the final episode. But, it's a very short amount of time to wrap up this many seasons of a family that's covered decades."

Goranson, who stars as Jackie's niece Becky Connor, expressed hope that the cast of crew of The Conners would get...

The Big Bang Theory's Co-Creator Admits Kaley Cuoco's Penny Was Cliché At First
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

More than five years removed from the series finale, it seems fair to say that "The Big Bang Theory" has earned its place in television history. Having aired 12 seasons and nearly 300 episodes on CBS, the show has maintained a loyal following in the years since it called it a day. But lasting a long time is one thing. Enduring beyond that is another. Much of that has to do with fans' love of the characters, led by Johnny Galecki's Leonard, Jim Parsons' Sheldon, and Kaley Cuoco's Penny.

Originally, Penny was meant to be a mean neighbor named Katie on "The Big Bang Theory," but Amanda Walsh's character was replaced by Cuoco, who was the friendly, bubbly blonde neighbor. At least at first. In the early seasons of the show, Cuoco's character was more of a clichéd, shallow blonde.
