Gene Hackman is one of the greatest actors of all time. He's also someone who has reinvented himself for many different generations. Although some great actors have never returned to the highlights of their early work, Hackman continued to prove why he was one of the best for decades after he first broke out in the industry.
Between crime thrillers, stage adaptations, quirky comedies, historical epics, and even a superhero movie franchise, Hackman has left major contributions to nearly every genre. Although Hackman clearly had a commanding dramatic presence, he wasn't afraid to take a chance on comedic roles. His single scene in Mel Brooks' 1974 classic "Young Frankenstein" is one of the most memorable moments in the film. Hackman has a consistently high quality of work, to the point that even a disastrous comedy like "Welcome to Mooseport" or a dull comic book movie like "Superman IV: The Quest for...

This colorful gangland drama was made by a studio in transition, in the middle of a crippling musician’s strike. Robert Taylor and Cyd Charisse were MGM’s last contract stars; her costumes and dance numbers are wildly anachronistic for the period setting and she refused to take direction from Nicholas Ray, whose career was coming apart at the seams. Yet the maverick director must have done something right, as the show has remained a favorite of audiences and critics. Co-starring Lee J. Cobb, John Ireland and Corey Allen. The Wac’S remastered Blu-ray is a beauty.

In the era of fast computers and fast internet, how can the techno thriller cope?
This article contains a spoiler for Mission: Impossible.
There’s a moment in the midst of Brian De Palma’s terrific Mission: Impossible film – the best one of the series still for me – where Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt has fished a floppy disk out of a bin. It’s been dumped there by Jean Reno’s duplicitous character, believed it not to contain the missing half of the Noc list. The Noc list that’s the MacGuffin for the movie, that Hunt and his Imf team are trying to stop falling into the wrong hands.
As it happens, it’s an old-fashioned switcheroo that’s been done, and the disk in the bin does contain the Noc list information. And whilst I didn’t appreciate it at the time, I do wonder if Mission: Impossible sat,...

Welcome back to This Week In Discs where we check out tomorrow’s new releases today! No Way Out Tom Farrell (Kevin Costner) distinguishes himself as a Navy officer after a heroic act and is rewarded with a high profile posting at the Pentagon under the Secretary of Defense, David Brice (Gene Hackman). He settles into the job well enough, but trouble erupts when a woman he’s seeing is revealed to be Brice’s mistress and then ends up dead. Farrell’s tasked with finding the killer even though all of the evidence seems to point in his direction. It’s been a long time coming, but thanks to Shout! Factory we can finally cross Roger Donaldson’s brilliant and immensely exciting thriller off the list of films we’ve yet to get on Blu-ray. This is a great day, and this is a great movie. Everyone is at the top of their game here including...

"You have no idea what men of power can do!"
When No Way Out arrived in theaters in the summer of 1987, audiences were just starting to take notice of Kevin Costner because of his appearance one month earlier in The Untouchables and Australia-born Kiwi director Roger Donaldson was a complete unknown. Only a few years later, Costner would be one of the hottest leading men in Hollywood and the Academy Award-winning writer and director of Dances With Wolves, while Donaldson would achieve incredible success with such varied movies as Cocktail and Species, but No Way Out is what brought both men to the fore.

SXSW kicks off today, and the sunny, BBQ roasted city of Austin is probably the perfect place for "Casa De Mi Padre" to making its premiere. The odd ball comedy stars Will Ferrell, Diego Luna, Gael Garcia Bernal, Nick Offerman and Genesis Rodriguez in a riff on Mexican telenovelas, that tells the story of rancher who falls in love with his brother's fiancé and winds up in a war with a drug lord. In other words, it's exactly what you might expect from Will Ferrell except here's the thing -- it's all in Spanish.
And that carries over to the soundtrack as well, which has Christina Aguilera belting out the title track, a few more songs by a variety of players (including two sung by Will Ferrell) and some score pieces by Andrew Feltenstein and John Nau. To give you a bit of flavor of what's to come, Funny Or...
