Legendary scream queens Brinke Stevens (The Slumber Party Massacre), Michelle Bauer (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers), Deborah Dutch (Hard to Die), and Courtney Lercara (Slaughterhouse) have joined the cast of writer/director Bobby Canipe Jr.’s upcoming horror project Grandma, a tribute to the shot-on-video horrors of the 1980s and ’90s! In Lercara’s case, this means she will be earning her first screen credit in thirty years, as she last appeared in the anthology Things back in 1993.
To ensure that Grandma will perfectly emulate the look and feel of the shot-on-video movies of the past, Canipe has brought on a dream team of executive producers and creative consultants that consists of multiple Sov filmmakers: Donald Farmer, Dustin Ferguson, Mark Polonia, Joel Wynkoop, Todd Sheets, Gary Cohen, Tim Ritter, Brad Sykes, and Eric Stanze. Scott Appleby will be providing the required original synth score.

Ahhh, the late ’80s/early ’90s… the heyday of shot-on-video horror. Where anyone could pick up a camera, make a movie and get it into video stores; well at least in the US. This was also the era that made household names out of the likes of Donald Farmer, Tim Ritter, and the Polonia Brothers… Filmmakers who, to this day, are still producing low budget genre films and still have a rabid fan base! I’m not going to lie though, the oeuvre of these filmmakers is somewhat of an acquired taste. Always low budget, often made with recurring cast and crew, very much what you’d call DIY filmmaking – right down to using familiar stock music and stock video footage. Yet often times truly falling into that “so bad they’re good category.

It’s not hard to underestimate how much of an impact the original I Spit on Your Grave film had on the genre – mainly thanks to the controversial way the film was marketed back in the late 70s/early 80s and its subsequent banning across several territories. Yet despite all the furore around the film, it never spawned a sequel – after all that was not de rigueur back then, especially with indie productions – but it did inspire the film Savage Vengeance, from cult director Donald Farmer: an unofficial sequel that starred actress Camille Keaton, under a pseudonym, playing yet another “Jennifer” without ever explicitly stating is was a follow-up to Zarchi’s original.

This is a tough review to do for two reasons. The first is that it’s not one film, but eight. The second is that I am so far out of the target audience I would simple never have watched this or thought about watching this if I weren’t reviewing it. With that in mind, this won’t be my personal view of what this collection is, but a reflection of what it’s trying to be.
Hi-8: Horror Independent Eight is a project given to eight directors. The idea is to create a short movie using absolutely no technology from the post-Internet age, so no HD cameras, digital effects or found footage. The purpose was to try and recreate the feeling of watching an old style shot on video horror flick from the 80’s,...

The St Louis Video Society does great work, finding old and obscure movies which were filmed in St Louis and shining a light on them, organising public showings and so on. Please join Stlvs head James, myself and the other low-budget movie afficionados of this fine city at a future showing.
First up is a surprising producing credit for one of my favourite figures, David Heavener. Heavener was the star of “Border Of Tong” (aka “Massacre”) and produced the Donald Farmer movie “Blood and Honour” – we’ll be featuring him in a future career retrospective. “Death Kick” was largely filmed in a tile warehouse in downtown-ish St Louis.
So, a movie called “Death Kick”, with the tagline “this guy kicks people to death”. Would you surprised if I told you no-one kicks anyone to death, and kicking is among the least important of the action moves on display?...

I love regional genre cinema – those movies that existed in the early days of VHS and video rental stores,
when seemingly anything could turn a small profit. There are many of them – 1977’s “The Demon

Donald Farmer’s cult classic, Vampire Cop has delighted B-movie fans for over two and half decades since debuting in 1990. It also marked one of the earliest appearances of popular scream queen Melissa Moore. Yet to this day, it’s only been released on VHS…
Now Srs Cinema have announced not only Vampire Cop‘s Blu-ray debut but also, as an added bonus, the release will include the director’s original cut for the very first time anywhere – scenes that were cut by the original distributor prior to release. This original version includes scenes with Melissa Moore and Blood Feast star Mal Arnold that no one has ever scene, besides extending many moments in the movie.

Credited to 38 writers and directors, 2016’s Grindsploitation is the ultimate homage to exploitation cinema, a two-and-a-half hour anthology consisting entirely of fake grindhouse trailers. Among the directors are Lloyd Kaufman (Poultrygeist: Night Of The Chicken Dead), Donald Farmer (An Erotic Vampire In Paris) and porn star Tommy Pistol, which gives you an idea of the content.
The movie is released in the UK in October, and in order to whet your appetite for it is Grinsploitation 2: The Lost Reels (“the sequel that nobody asked for and nobody wanted”), the fake sequel to the fake anthology. It’s clearly meant to be a joke because Body Bag Films are releasing the picture on April Fools’ Day.

WildEye Releasing have announced the release of Shark Exorcist, the latest film from cult director Donald Farmer (Demon Queen, Cannibal Hookers, Dorm of the Dead). A creature feature genre with a twist, the film sees a deadly great white shark terrorize the small village of Paris Landing. The beast is driven not by rage or revenge, but by the Devil himself!
A demonic nun summons Satan to a small fishing village, where he takes over the bodies of a great white shark and a young woman. A chain reaction of evil grips the tiny community as shredded bodies wash ashore. A Catholic priest arrives, and he must fight both teeth and temptation on land and sea in order to send these man-killers back to Hell before the tide comes in for good!
Shark Exorcist will rise from the deep on DVD and Digital HD this June.

[Editors Note: Given that we've already reviewed the Vinegar Syndrome release of Graduation Day and both discs are virtually identical bar the extras, we thought we'd review the Major difference between the two Blu-ray releases - the bonus feature on the UK disc, the documentary Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed]
It’s fair to say I’m a sucker for scream queen “documentaries”. Be they the T&A filled features such as Scream Queen Hollywood Hot Tub Party, more amateur-hour productions such as Donald Farmer’s shot-on-video Invasion of the Scream Queens, or the awesome scream queen interviews that featured in Stephen King’s World of Horror – if it features an interview with a scream queen then I’m there. I’m also a fan of the documentaries and Blu-ray extras produced by High Rising Productions – including their previously released slasher movie documentary: Slice and Dice: The Slasher Movie Forever.
Put the two together and… I’m in filmic heaven!
Directed by UK-horror scene stalwart Calum Waddell and hosted by scream queen Debbie Rochon (Terror Firmer, Tromeo and Juliet) Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed features, in a change of pace for horror documentaries, especially those focusing on females in the genre,...

Even though we’re right in the midst of the superhero movie season, that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty being released on Blu-ray and DVD to keep us horror fans happy. Wild Eye Releasing has announced that the 1992 documentary Invasion of the Scream Queens will soon be available for the first time on DVD in a Special 20th Anniversary Edition. The film has been rescued from obscurity by Wild Eye and will be released on June 17th.
Directed by Donald Farmer (Demon Queen, Savage Vengeance), Invasion of the Scream Queens was shot in the early 1990s during the heyday of direct-to-video and cable TV B-movie horror. All the babes and all the blood are on full display here in this classic, rare document from the history of horror
It features interviews with legendary horror divas Brinke Stevens (1313: Cougar Cult, Bloody Mary 3D), Mary Woronov (House of the Devil, The Devil's Rejects), Melissa Moore (Samurai Cop, Sorority House Massacre 2), Michelle Bauer (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, 3 Scream Queens), Elizabeth Kaitan (Friday the 13th Part VII, Silent Night, Deadly Night, Part 2), and more.

We’re back with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes Save Yourself first details, a new clip from The Well, a look at the first four minutes from Discopath, the teaser trailer for Bestseller, and much more:
New Clip from The Well and Screening Details: “At the edge of an expansive barren valley, all that remains of The Wallace Farm for Wayward Youth is a few hollowed-out husks of buildings. Seventeen-year-old Kendal (Haley Lu Richardson) can barely recall when the Oregon valley was still lush. It’s been a decade since the last rainfall, and society at large has dried up and blown away. Kendal and the few others that remain barely scrape by, while dreaming of escape. When a greedy water baron lays claim to what little of the precious resource remains underground, Kendal must decide whether...

Finally the trailer is here for Nightfall Pictures and Twisted Illusions' new anthology film Hi-8 (which stands for Horror. Independent. 8 Filmmakers), and we we have it here for you dripping with indie horror goodness.
From the Press Release
Hi-8 is produced by Brad Sykes, Josephina Sykes, and Tim Ritter. The directors’ lineup is Tim Ritter (Truth or Dare), Brad Sykes (Camp Blood), Marcus Koch (100 Tears), Ron Bonk (The Vicious Sweet), Donald Farmer (Savage Vengeance), Todd Sheets (Zombie Bloodbath), Chris Seaver (Filthy McNasty), and Tony Masiello (Sov: The True Independents).
Producer Brad Sykes got the idea for the anthology while working on Srs Cinema’s upcoming VHS/DVD release of his feature The Pact, which was shot on the Hi-8 format back in 1995 while Sykes was still a college student. He missed those days of carefree filmmaking and approached Tim Ritter with the idea, who already had the Hi-8 title and concept ready to go.

“The primary goal of Under The Scares [in which—full disclosure—this writer appeared] was to help young filmmakers make good movies without throwing their money away,” says director Steve Villeneuve. The follow-up, he explains, “will focus on the future of independent horror. In this film, I want to show how the evolution of technology has impacted the viewing experience of independent cinema, and the ability of these filmmakers to monetize their product since the 1970s.”
Already announced as part of Independent Scares are such genre veterans as Glass Eye Pix topper Larry Fessenden (pictured above), The Blair Witch Project and Lovely Molly’s Eduardo Sanchez, longtime producer/director Fred Olen Ray, Andrew van den Houten of Headspace, The Woman and others and Independent-International honcho Sam Sherman (pictured right). Villeneuve reveals to Fango that other talking heads will include Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer and The Shrine director Jon Knautz, JimmyO Burril and April Monique Burril of The Chainsaw Sally Show,...

In the 80s, rock music and horror movies went together like acid washed jeans and feathered hair. The trouble is, even though many horror movies had awesome rock soundtracks, the movies that specifically featured rock musician characters as heroes or villains varied wildly in quality. Although the rock horror movie has mostly gone the way of the 80s, I’m not sure any other type of music will ever have such a successful love affair with horror. I can’t picture people turning up for a movie called Pop Divas of the Apocalypse, or Death by Dubstep, or even Bloody Pit of Techno Bastards. But what do I know? I’m still stuck in the 80s. Here are 10 of the movies that are stuck with me.
Rocktober Blood (1984)

Okay, people, clearly we need to have a talk.
Now, I’ll admit to having watched the occasional housewife cat-fight, and I’d be lying if I said watching Colton be carted off Survivor on a gurney didn’t fill me with a certain sense of schadenfreude. (I don’t feel good about it, but, come on! That dude was annoying!) There is, however, a line I’d like to think I wouldn’t cross when it comes to my relationship with reality television.
And that line involves paying $18 bucks an hour to chat on the phone with Real Housewives Of New Jersey “star” Danielle Staub. Or $12 a minute to find out what Nadya “Octomom” Suleman thinks of, say, the Republican frontrunners.
Yet some of you out there are doing exactly that according to TMZ, which reported on a site called dial-a-star.com where you can… well, the name is pretty self-explanatory.

Back in June of 2009 writer/director Michael Wade Johnson's anthology project Killer Shorts hit DVD, and now Killer Shorts 2, a 100-minute movie shot in Tennessee and North Carolina, is getting ready for a spin around the film festival circuit. It's also already available to order on DVD.
The movie is another throwback to the old days of horror hosts such as Elvira and "The Twilight Zone"'s Rod Serling that introduced the macabre scenes in frightful and comedic ways. This Faux Pas Films production features three new shorts:
"The Killer's Meow" - A group of friends decide to party in an old abandoned house, but the house isn’t as abandoned as they thought. When they encounter the crazy cat lady, members of the group begin to disappear. Can those remaining figure out the mystery before they, too, fall victim to the killer's meow?
