3 Things Actors Need to Do to Be On Tom Cruise’s Christmas Cake List: Simon Pegg
Image
It’s no secret that Tom Cruise loves his annual Christmas traditions, with the most legendary one being his iconic holiday cake list. Only an elite group of Hollywood stars and A-listers are blessed with the famous Doan’s Bakery white chocolate coconut bundt cake from the Top Gun actor every December. Landing a spot on the list has essentially become a rite of passage in the industry.

But what does it take to earn a sweet spot on Cruise’s cake radar? Simon Pegg recently jokingly broke down the core elements of a friendship with Tom Cruise. And behind the humor lie a strict set of “rules”. From physical trials to building real connections, here’s a look into three things actors need to keep in mind if they wanna be on the recipients’ list of this delicious holiday tradition.

Cannes Market Hot List: Will New Films From Seth Rogen, Pamela Anderson, Rachel Zegler and Jeremy Allen White Spark Bidding Wars?
Image
Will some serious star power reinvigorate the Cannes Film Market?

That’s the big question facing sales agents as studios and streamers hit the Croisette on the prowl for compelling new movies. At Sundance, Berlin and Toronto, the movie business seemed to be in the throes of a massive contraction. Having spent freely while launching their own in-house challengers to Netflix, studios like Warner Bros., Disney and Paramount, along with their indie brethren, were in full-on cost-cutting mode. Complicating matters was the fact that after being burned by overspending for projects and packages at festivals in the past, tech giants like Apple and Amazon have instead concentrated on producing in-house content. That left many filmmakers still searching for distribution long after the crowds dispersed.

But there’s something about the sunshine — or maybe the free-flowing rosé — in the South of France that always leads to a bidding war or two.

NBCUniversal Has Hoop Dreams As Sports Set To Dominate Upfronts
Image
Last year, it was movies. This year, it seems, it’s all sports. The Upfronts kicked off at Radio City Music Hall with NBC reminding advertisers that it will soon have NBA basketball.

The company scored the first basket at the three-day event that will likely be dominated by live sports with the news that Michael Jordan, arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, had signed up to be a special contributor to its NBA coverage.

“Sports is definitely having a moment in the industry and, God knows, you’ll hear the word ‘sports’ ten-thousand times this week, how some sports are moving to streaming or other platforms are adding a day or two to their schedule,” said Mark Marshall, Chairman, NBCUniversal Global Advertising & Partnerships.

But Donna Langley, whose team just put together its first fall schedule (sort of) that includes primetime basketball, said that she hopes its $2.5B annual deal will have a positive impact on the rest of its programming.

Langley, Chairman, NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studio, said, “Every game will be a new event, a weekly tentpole that maximizes the impact of the league across our platforms and delivers a sizable audience watching in real time for our advertising partners. By adding NBA games to the schedule, we’ll build on decades of sports programming on NBC and create a halo effect around the entire entertainment schedule. So whether you’re a Bravoholic, a cinephile, a sports fanatic, news junkie, or simply can’t miss Weekend Update, our franchises offer something for everyone, which means our advertisers can, without question, reach the broadest possible audience.”

NBC’s October schedule features less than a third scripted programming with only one new series – Jimmy Fallon’s marketing reality series On Brand, with The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, starring Tracy Morgan and Daniel Radcliffe, who were on stage, being added at some point over the fall.

There were a handful of other NBC stars on stage including David Alan Grier and Wendi McLendon-Covey from St. Denis Medical, which is returning for a second season, Reba McEntire, star of Happy’s Place and a coach on The Voice, and S. Epatha Merkerson from Chicago Med.

“One of the many powers of this portfolio is the ability to build and maintain audiences season after season whether it’s newer comedies like our show St. Denis Medical or iconic legacy franchises like Law & Order or Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago Pd, Chicago Sanitation and Chicago Municipal Zone,” Grier joked.

The Upfronts presentation leaned heavily on Peacock programming including The Office spinoff The Paper and Dig starring Amy Poehler.

Poehler, who was joined on stage by her “work husband” Tina Fey, said that production on the show, which reunites her with her Parks and Recreation cohort Mike Schur, starts this summer.

The company showed a trailer for The Paper, which comes from The Office’s Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, which featured The White Lotus star Sabrina Impacciatore as a female Michael Scott. “You’re going to get tired chasing my pretty little butt around with that camera,” she says in the clip.

Oscar Nunez, who played Oscar Martinez in The Office, is back, this time in Toledo, Ohio. “Oh, no, not again, I’m not agreeing to any of this. Don’t you guys have enough after nine years, I’m starting over with another of these things,” Nunez’s Martinez says in the trailer.

“I told Mr. Greg Daniels that if Oscar came back, he would probably be living in a more, bustling, cosmopolitan city. Greg heard me and moved Oscar to Toledo, Ohio, which has three times the population of Scranton, so it was nice to be heard,” joked Nunez.

Domhnall Gleeson plays idealistic journalist Ned Sampson. “Fans of The Office will be delighted to see Oscar back at work. Some older fans will look at me and be glad that Meredith is also coming back. That’s a red hair joke,” said Gleeson.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth Banks, Keke Palmer and Dakota Fanning were on stage to promote The Miniature Wife, The Burbs and All Her Fault, respectively.

Banks, whose series is a marital comedy also starring Matthew Macfadyen, joked that her relationship with NBCU goes back to the time that she did a spot on Third Watch, which ran between 1999 and 2005, as well as an appearance on Law & Order: Svu, which Palmer also starred on when she was 12.

“Every person you see up here today, every performance, trailer or clip actors have prepared for you, brings us back to four little words, the mantra that greets us every day in the headquarters in Los Angeles: Above All Else: Entertain, and that’s what we do best,” concluded Langley.

Inside the NBCU Upfront: Seth MacFarlane Takes Aim at Rival Streamers, ‘Wicked’ Gets Another Big Showcase, Snoop Dogg Closes It Like It’s Hot
Image
Seth MacFarlane may have made network upfront history on Monday, opening the NBCUniversal presentation with a song-and-dance routine boasting the chorus, “NBCU has the shit you’re after!”

That was likely the first time any network boasted that they’re “the shit” in their message to advertisers — but it was very on brand, of course, for MacFarlane, whose overall deal with the company has so far generated a live-action Peacock series based on his “Ted” film franchise, and now an animated take on it as well.

Among MacFarlane’s competitive barbs in his number, which kicked off the two-hour NBCU upfront: “You can give all your money to Netflix/ just to have your commercials on auto play/ But I got news, buddy, all your views are the Tinder Dates just busy getting laid.

On Disney and Hulu, where MacFarlane still has a ton of business via his animated series “Family Guy...

Image
Peacock unveiled a bold programming slate ahead for the NBCUniversal-owned streamer, headlined by the September premiere of “The Office” spinoff “The Papers” from creators Greg Daniels and Michael Koman.

The comedy series, starring attendees Domhnall Gleeson (“About Time”), Sabrina Impacciatore (“The White Lotus”) and Oscar Nunez (“The Office”), unveiled a first look as part of NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation on Monday. Set in the same universe as “The Office,” the show features the same documentary crew following the staff of a Toledo newspaper, The Truth Teller, and its eager publisher fighting to bring it back to life. An exact premiere date is yet to be revealed.

The show headlines a slate presentation for the streamer, which also boasted new unscripted releases and interactive features to come for their livestreams of NBA games starting this fall. The company also touted its streamer’s first-to-stream deal with Universal Pictures with upcoming releases like “Jurassic Word: Rebirth,...

Denzel Washington's lone franchise in his distinguished career, The Equalizer, finds new life on another streaming service. The gory action film, The Equalizer 2, debuts strongly on Netflix shortly after landing on the popular platform.

Released in 2018, The Equalizer 2 sees Denzel Washington reprise his main role as Marine Corps veteran and former Dia officer Robert McCall. For the actors, Kevin Bacon will be submitted in the Best Limited Series/Movie Actor category. Bacon’s costars Bill Camp, Glenn Howerton, and Felix Solis will campaign in the supporting category.

Emmys: Netflix’s ‘The Perfect Couple’ Will Compete in Drama Categories, Not Limited/Anthology (Exclusive)
Image
Here’s an Emmys surprise for you.

The Perfect Couple, the six-episode Netflix murder-mystery starring Nicole Kidman that was a huge hit for the streamer upon its release on Sept. 5, 2024, is being submitted for Emmys consideration not in the limited/anthology series categories, where most pundits assumed it would compete, but rather in the drama series categories, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

That’s because “Queen of the Beach Read” Elin Hilberbrand, from whose 2018 bestselling novel Jenna Lamia created and Susanne Bier directed the show, has written additional books that could also be adapted into an additional season or seasons. Netflix declined to comment on that possibility but confirmed the aforementioned submission decision.

It all makes sense, given just how popular The Perfect Couple was. Indeed, the show spent six weeks in the service’s global top 10 of English-language TV shows; broke into the top 10 TV shows in 92 countries; and...

For all his ability to disappear into complex roles, here’s a countdown of ten Guy Pearce films that, despite their box office misfortune, deserve your attention.

This Denzel Washington Thriller That Fans Loved and Critics Loathed Is Now Free to Stream
Image
In a lot of cases, the reaction to a given film from the moviegoing public mirrors the critical response to said motion picture. That makes a certain amount of sense because even though there’s a level of objectivity at play with cinema, a bad movie is a bad movie. However, there are still those occasions where the masses connect with a flick for which critics have absolutely no time. The Denzel Washington thriller Man on Fire is an excellent example of that.

Rotten Tomatoes has amalgamated 167 reviews from film scholars and the picture holds a below-average critical approval rating of 38%. However, the flick’s user rating is a far more positive at 89%. That’s quite the divide. Yet, that audience score is not an anomaly. The picture’s IMDb user rating is also well above average at 7.7/10. Holy cow!

A lot of critics called the film out as overly...

Denzel Washington fans get a treat to start next month as one of the Hollywood legend's greatest action films finds a new streaming home. The Oscar-winner's vigilante thriller, The Equalizer, draws a streaming premiere via Hulu.

Hulu recently confirmed that The Equalizer will debut via its platform on Apr. 1. The Washington-led pic became a streaming favorite last year following the success of The Equalizer 3. The original film landed on Paramount+ last year following a short but successful Netflix stint. The Equalizer marks Washington's first turn as its central protagonist, Robert McCall, a former U.S. Marine and Dia officer trying to live a quiet life away from the spotlight. However, McCall reluctantly returns to action to save a teenage trafficking victim named Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz) from the Russian mafia,...

12 Best Sydney Sweeney Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
There's no one in our modern film landscape like Sydney Sweeney. In a culture where looks tend to dominate your level of success, Sweeney has devoured stereotypes -- because let's face it, she's stunning -- and ultimately has made a name for herself with the quality of her work both on and offscreen. Though she did her first TV and film stints way back in 2009, her career didn't truly start to pick up until nearly a decade later in 2018. Since then, she has completely taken the industry by storm as a performer and, even more recently, as a dedicated producer.

Sweeney doesn't have a ton of noteworthy credits to her name at this point in her career, but there's no denying she's already done some extremely memorable top-notch work, and there's even more in the pipeline with her upcoming turn as boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic. From dramas to rom-coms,...

‘The Perfect Couple’ Season 2 in Development at Netflix Based on Elin Hilderbrand’s ‘Swan Song’
Image
Netflix is in the process of developing a second season of “The Perfect Couple,” according to media reports.

After the first season of “The Perfect Couple” adapted Elin Hilderbrand’s novel of the same name, the second installment would be based on Hilderbrand’s “Swan Song,” which is also set in Nantucket. Season 2 is in development at Netflix, and, if greenlit, would shift “The Perfect Couple” from a limited series to an anthology series.

The new season would welcome aboard a new showrunner in Joanna Calo, who’s best known for co-showrunning and executive producing FX’s “The Bear.” Susanne Bier and Nicole Kidman, who starred in the first season, will return as EPs alongside Gail Berman, Shawn Levy, Hend Baghdady and Per Saari.

Netflix declined to comment on this story.

Kidman starred in “The Perfect Couple” as Greer Winbury, the matriarch of the wealthy Winbury family who guards the...

Netflix Renews Limited Series The Perfect Couple for Season 2, Turns It Into an Anthology
Image
The murder mystery drama series The Perfect Couple was a hit on Netflix when it premiered on Sept 5, 2024. Although it was originally supposed to be a limited series, the streamer has officially announced its future.

Per Deadline, The Perfect Couple has been renewed for Season 2. However, as the series has already solved the mystery at the end of Season 1, things will be different in the future. Instead of following the same characters, Season 2 will become an anthology while continuing to adapt Elin Hilderbrand's novels, this time, the 2024 novel Swan Song.

Elin Hilderbrand often writes novels set on or around Nantucket, where she lives. The Perfect Couple Season 1 followed the action of the 2018 eponymous novel, part of the Nantucket series. However, while the series as a whole creates a bigger universe where many characters are mentioned in different stories and provide further details about the characters, they can be enjoyed as standalones.

Perfect Couple Season 2 In Development At Netflix, Series Will Be An Anthology With Next Novel Adaptation Revealed
Image
The Perfect Couple season 2 is coming, and the book it will adapt has just been revealed. Released in 2024 and based on Elin Hilderbrand's novel of the same name, The Perfect Couple season 1 stars Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber as Greer and Tag Winbury, a couple who become wrapped up in a murder investigation while attending a lavish Nantucket wedding. The darkly comedic mystery show, despite earning somewhat lukewarm reviews, was a major viewership success for Netflix, but it was billed as a limited series.

Deadline now reports that Netflix is developing The Perfect Couple season 2 and turning the show into an anthology, with the next outing set to adapt another novel by Hilderbrand. The author's 2024 novel, Swan Song, will serve as the basis for season 2, with the search now underway for the two lead roles of Leslee and Bill Richardson.

Joanna Calo will serve as the new showrunner for season 2, replacing Jenna Lamia,...

‘Perfect Couple’ Season 2 in the Works at Netflix Based on Elin Hilderbrand Novel ‘Swan Song’
Image
“The Perfect Couple” could be back for Season 2 — with a new story and a new cast.

Variety has learned from sources that Netflix is developing a second season of the popular series based on the Elin Hilderbrand novel “Swan Song.” Given that book features an entirely different story and characters than “The Perfect Couple,” also based on a Hilderbrand novel, the idea is to go the anthology route with the series.

Joanna Calo is attached to write, executive produce and showrun the new season, which has not been formally greenlit at this time. Season 1 star Nicole Kidman will executive produce for Blossom Films along with Per Saari, with Gail Berman, Shawn Levy, Susanne Bier, and Hend Baghdady also executive producing.

Reps for Netflix declined to comment.

Like “The Perfect Couple,” “Swan Song” takes place in Nantucket. But rather than the Winburys, the book focuses on the mysterious Richardson family. Per...

The Steven Spielberg Alien Abduction TV Series You've Probably Never Seen
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Steven Spielberg knows a thing or two about sci-fi, especially extraterrestrials in fiction. While such stories about alien encounters often come in varying shades, the most enduring, nostalgia-laden film associated with the genre is Spielberg's "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial." A classic in almost every sense, "E.T." captures the anxieties of childhood along with its wonders, etching a journey about homecoming through the most endearing friendships. On the flip side, we have Spielberg's 1977 "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," a first-contact tale where an everyman's obsessive drive to de-mystify UFOs propels him to choose openness in the face of the unknown. Although "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" is not as heartwarming or fantastical in tone as "E.T.," it wears a Spielberg-ian brand of tender hope that runs through (almost) all of the director's sci-fi undertakings.

Then there's 2005's "War of the Worlds,...

H.E.R. is weighing in on Oscar producers’ decision not to include performances of this year’s best original song nominees during Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony.
