Stephen King at an event for The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
Maximum Overdrive 2: Emilio Estevez pitched and wrote a sequel to his Stephen King movie
Stephen King at an event for The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
Stephen King has written hundreds of short stories and more than sixty novels, but he has only directed one movie: the goofball 1986 film Maximum Overdrive (watch it Here). King has avoided directing ever since and star Emilio Estevez has said that not only does he regret working on the movie, but that King has even begged Estevez to forgive him for getting him into that mess. But Estevez doesn’t regret his involvement with Maximum Overdrive so much that it would keep him from working on a sequel – in fact, he pitched and wrote a script for a Maximum Overdrive 2 himself!

Based on King’s short story Trucks, Maximum Overdrive has the following synopsis: After a comet causes a radiation storm on Earth, machines come to life and turn against their makers. Holed up in a North Carolina truck stop, a group of survivors must fend for themselves against a mass of homicidal trucks.

“If the Gods are F**king You, F**k Them Back…”: The Wire’s Ervin H. Burrell Mastered the Art of Playing a Rigged Game
Image
HBO’s The Wire might revolve around The Crown star Dominic West’s character, Detective James McNulty, and his team of investigators, but one cannot overlook the sheer dominance of Frankie Faison’s Ervin H. Burrell. Although he wasn’t your classic hero, Burrell sure knew how to play the dirty game of politics and master the art of beating the rigged system.

While others fought for justice, Ervin H. Burrell appeared to be fighting for survival. With the mayor breathing down his neck and city council members scheming constantly, he didn’t just follow the rules—he bent them. Burrell knew the game was rigged, but instead of whining about it, he played it like a pro. So, here’s a tribute to his bureaucratic manipulation.

'White Chicks' Streaming Hit on Max
Image
Sometimes it can take years for a movie to truly catch on, and that has proven to be the case with the 2004 comedy White Chicks, directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, and starring Marlon and Shawn Wayans, better known as the Wayans Brothers. The film was a moderate hit upon release and wasn't embraced by critics as it carries a less than stellar 15% Rotten Tomatoes score. Despite the critical response, the film has since been regarded as a cult classic, with many fans demanding a sequel. As they wait for news of a follow-up, White Chicks has found success once again by becoming a hit on streaming.

White Chicks is currently streaming on Max and is currently ranked ninth in their top ten movies. The movie is ahead of the James Franco comedy Why Him and behind a wide range of efforts from films that are great, such as End of Watch...

Netflix brings one of the most important films ever to your home
Image
Netflix announced 12 new titles for the first of the month and then added a dozen more to the mix. The stealth release slate was at least as good as the previously announced group. Happily, it included one of my favorite films ever. If you haven't seen it yet, this is your chance to add it to your list.

I saw this movie at the theater when it came out in 1989. It was astonishing, amazing, and absolutely brilliant. Sounds like an especially arrogant LLC, doesn't it? Well, it truly was and still is all of those things. From the opening frame to the last, I was riveted, as was the entire audience. As soon as it was available on DVD, I had my own copy. That was followed by the Blu-ray, then the digital version. And lucky you, you get to watch it now on Netflix.

When I say this is...

'White Chicks 2' Is Now in the Works, Marlon Wayans Reveals "It’s Time"
Image
One of the most controversial comedies of modern times is getting a long-awaited sequel. Released more than two decades ago, White Chicks stars Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans as two FBI agents who must go undercover as two white, female socialites...using “whiteface.” Now, finally, the cinematic gods have heard our endless cries as Marlon Wayans confirms that there are plans in place to bring back Brittany and Tiffany Wilson for White Chicks 2.

Speaking with Good Morning America, Wayans revealed that, following the release of another of the Wayans’ highly anticipated comedy sequels, Scary Movie 6, they will start work on White Chicks 2, with the actor, comedian, writer, and producer saying, “it’s time.”

"[Fans always ask] 'When are you doing the sequel?' They love that movie," he said. "Hey, you know, I think it's time. Let's get Scary Movie 6 done, and then we'll go and bring out White Chicks 2."

'The Boys' Antony Starr's 'Banshee' Is a Streaming Success on Max
Image
Before donning a cape and becoming a paragon for supervillainy as Homelander in The Boys, once upon a time Antony Starr played a sexually irresistible criminal impersonating a sheriff in the Cinemax series Banshee. Despite the last episode of the show airing in 2016, the series has found a bump in interest on streaming as the hyper-violent crime thriller is now in the Max Top 10 TV charts.

Co-created by Jonathan Tropper - who also created Warrior and the upcoming Apple TV+ series Your Friends and Neighbors - Banshee is the story of an ex-con who assumes the identity of a deceased incoming sheriff to Banshee Pennsylvania. Under this new identity of Lucas Hood, the fake sheriff attempts to reconnect with his former lover, dodge the attacks from a powerful crime lord, all while dispensing his own brand of small-town justice. It's a wild ride with splashy action that doesn't ground itself too deeply in reality.

Why 'The Rookie: Feds' Was Canceled
Image
Quick Links 'The Rookie: Feds' Greenlight and Cancelation Why Was 'The Rookie: Feds' Canceled? A New Entry in 'The Rookie' Franchise

The Rookie is one of broadcast TV's most underrated yet sturdy titles. It's among the few modern broadcast network dramas that's made it to that elusive 100-episode mark. In an era of cost-cutting and streaming domination, most new shows are lucky to get two or three seasons. Given that success, it's no surprise that ABC attempted to build the newest police procedural franchise around this Nathan Fillion-starrer.

The Rookie: Feds, starring Niecy Nash-Betts, launched in the 2022-23 TV season. But instead of being the next NCIS, Law & Order, or FBI-style spin-off, it was canceled after just one season. Obviously, one-and-done cancelations are all too common in the broadcast TV world. But this spin-off had a relatively big-name star in Nash-Betts, as well as a connection to The Rookie.

Jim Jarmusch Movies Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Jim Jarmusch's best movies prove he has always been a risk-taker of a director, even if those risks are necessarily pronounced or brash compared to other filmmakers. Over more than 30 years in the business, Jarmusch has dominated the indie scene as a director concerned with the quotidian, the existential, the unusual, the confrontational, the bland, and everything in between. A typical Jarmusch plot presents as a logical, mild-mannered affair no matter how extraordinary the circumstances, choosing to focus on how the characters populating the film operate within the established rules of the world.

As such, Jarmusch has emerged as a director who has been able to go from genre to genre, be it a crime thriller, comedy, or supernatural drama, infusing it with his unique sensibilities. With 13 feature films and two documentaries to his name (not to mention the large handful of short films), Jarmusch has crafted an astounding...

“The Rookie” creator Alexi Hawley will write the new spinoff series, which will be co-produced by Lionsgate Television and 20th Television. Hawley will also executive produce alongside “The Rookie” star Nathan Fillion as well as “The Rookie” EPs Michelle Chapman and Bill Norcross.

10 Awesome Action TV Shows With Fast-Paced Fight Scenes
Image
Many great action series feature the best TV show battle scenes, and modern fight choreography has been getting faster and more engaging than ever. Whether they're live-action or animated, these TV series utilize fight sequences that keep the audience guessing and provide plenty of dynamic movements, often making them lauded as the most successful within the action genre. However, these fights only land on the viewer and are treated as impactful parts of the story if audiences care about the characters and if the fight sequences work to drive the plot forward.

When TV battle scenes aren't accurate to real life, this can take the viewer out of the story, but this isn't the most important piece of an action series. Many audience members aren't familiar with the ins and outs of technical aspects and are most concerned with whether or not the visuals are compelling. Fight scenes don't necessarily...

Courtney B. Vance is a Tony- and Emmy-winning actor and the president of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. Before Homelander, The Boys' Antony Starr Played A Very Different Kind Of Killer
Image
Antony Starr's performance as Homelander on the hit Prime Video series "The Boys" is absolutely incredible. He manages to give tiny moments of humanity that appear through the cracks in his villainous facade, making the character so much more than just a monster who's really into milk. Starr is excellent at portraying badasses with a penchant for murder, and while Homelander is pure villain, he once played a much more complicated kind of killer.

Before he was Homelander, Antony Starr starred as the morally ambiguous but unspeakably charming Lucas Hood on the Cinemax series "Banshee," which aired from 2013 through 2016. In "Banshee," Starr plays a world-class thief who took the fall during a botched job to protect his team, spending 15 years in prison. When he's released, he ends up in the fictional town of Banshee, Pennsylvania, where the Amish, an Indigenous crime organization, skinheads, and more are almost always at war.

But one cast member who doesn’t share the negative opinion King and Estevez have on Maximum Overdrive is Giancarlo Esposito, who appears in the film as a character called “Videoplayer.”

Esposito, best known these days for his role on Breaking Bad, told Cinema Blend that he thought King did a brilliant job on the film. Esposito said, “I thought Stephen was brilliant in directing that film and thought he would have a long career as a director. He’s prolific as a writer of course,...

Giancarlo Esposito Reflects on Disastrous Stephen King Movie: 'Your Mama!'
Image
Stephen King's Maximum Overdrive is a cult classic despite being a critical and commercial flop. Actor Giancarlo Esposito praised King's directing and enjoyed working with him in the film. Stephen King has repeatedly apologized for the movie, acknowledging his struggles with addiction during its production.

Released in 1986 and based on the Stephen King short story Trucks, Maximum Overdrive remains the only movie the horror author ever directed, and for good reason. It was a critical and commercial flop, earning just $7.4 million at the box office against a budget of $9 million. However, while its widely regarded as one of the worst Stephen King adaptations ever made, its also become a guilty pleasure of many over the years, including Giancarlo Esposito, who appeared briefly in the movie early on in his career.

Speaking with CinemaBlend, Esposito took time to reflect on Maximum Overdrive, saying that at the time he thought King...

10 Cult Classic '80s Horror Movies That Don't Get Enough Credit
Image
Cult classics from the 1980s set new standards in horror, blending genres and introducing influential ideas. Films like Cat People and Gothic may not be mainstream, but they deserve recognition for their impact. The 1980s gave us underrated gems like The Return of the Living Dead, Christine, and From Beyond that deserve more credit.

The 1980s were a fantastic time for horror movies and were full of cult classics that just didn't get enough credit. While acclaimed horror movies like The Shining or massive franchises like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street have dominated the conversation around 1980s horror, its important to shine a light on all the other great movies out there. The best cult classics were beloved by horror enthusiasts but sadly didnt have as much resonance for a mainstream audience and have been lying idle, just waiting to be rediscovered.

Many cult classics never got...

The Rookie Season 6 Ending Cameos & Why Niecy Nash-Betts Didn't Return Explained By Showrunner
Image
Warning: This article contains mild spoilers for the Rookie season 6 finale.

While The Rookie season 6 finale featured several characters from the cancelled Feds spinoff, Niecy Nash-Betts did not reprise her role. Showrunner Alexi Hawley explained that Nash-Betts is busy working on "high profile" projects. Hawley expressed interest in continuing to feature the Feds characters wherever possible on the show.

The showrunner of The Rookie has explained the absence of one notable Feds character in their recent season finale. Feds was a spinoff of the flagship show following the oldest rookie to ever join the FBI Academy and featuring a cast that included Niecy Nash-Betts, Frankie Faison, James Lesure, Britt Robertson, Felix Solis, and Kevin Zegers. The spinoff show only ran for one season before being cancelled by ABC. Ahead of the already renewed The Rookie season 7, the recent season 6 finale featured cameos from several Feds characters, though former lead character...

Per TVLine, The Rookie earned its season renewal with four episodes left to go for its current sixth season. The show was one of a handful of titles that were still on the bubble at ABC, and this now leaves the futures of both The Conners and Not Dead Yet unknown. The Good Doctor and Station 19 will both be ending with their current seasons, while the next TV season will introduce Kaitlin Olson's High Potential and Joshua Jackson's Dr. Odyssey; the latter was created by Ryan Murphy.

10 Superhero TV Shows That Are Definitely Not For Kids
Image
R-rated superhero movies have paved the way for mature and boundary-pushing TV storytelling in the MCU, Dcu, and other brands, allowing for social commentary and exploration of the human experience. Shows like Luke Cage, Gen V, Doom Patrol, Jessica Jones, and Peacemaker deliver mature and gritty narratives, tackling themes such as injustice, trauma, abuse, and generational issues. Harley Quinn, The Punisher, Daredevil, Invincible, and The Boys offer violent and gory content alongside complex characters and social commentary, challenging traditional notions of heroism and exploring dark aspects of society.

As the superhero genre disengages from the traditional clean-cut hero versus villain narrative, it opens the door for more interesting, boundary-pushing stories in the MCU, Dcu, and other brands. In film, R-rated superhero movies began a legacy that has been adopted and perfected by the long-form storytelling of television. Thanks to this removal of constraints, the superhero genre has produced some stellar...

The Langoliers (1995) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
The The Langoliers episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:

Well, it’s time to let the King have his moment again. This is Stephen King’s second go around on the show and while Silver Bullet based on Cycle of the Werewolf is a minor cult classic, it’s not one of the bigger adaptations out of his overall catalogue. Today is going to an even deeper cut. While it seems that nearly everything has been adapted, there is a lot that has yet to be turned into a show, movie, or short film. Back in the 90s and early 2000s it felt like his made for TV miniseries were happening more frequently and had more hype to them,...

Banshee Cast: Where Are They Now?
Jamie Bamber, Daniel MacPherson, Warren Brown, Alin Sumarwata, and Varada Sethu in Strike Back (2010)
Before getting out of the business of producing scripted content, Cinemax's lineup of shows was truly phenomenal.

The network brought great shows like Strikeback, Warrior (now on Max), and Banshee to life.

These shows were well-written, with great characters and stories. The action was top-tier, making action buffs weak on the knees with every sequence.

Banshee's narrative, storyline, direction, and enigmatic characters stood out. The show is one of the most underrated shows from the 2010s.

After seeing its lead male actor's phenomenal skills in a currently airing show, I was compelled to check up on the cast and see what they've been up to in the years since the show ended.

Relatively unknown at the time, New Zealand actor Antony Starr embodied the role of Lucas Hood.

25 TV Shows With the Most Nudity
Image
Shows with the most nudity are widely discussed for their raunchy content and boundary-pushing. American broadcast networks face FCC regulations on nudity, but premium networks like HBO are known for it. Popular shows like Game of Thrones and Euphoria feature graphic sex scenes and nudity, becoming less shocking over time.

The shows with the most nudity are among the most widely discussed in the history of TV, as many of them have caused a stir due to their raunchy content or pushing of boundaries. While in recent years nudity has become fairly regular on the small screen, the shows with the most nudity stand out for the notable amounts of nakedness. The first time American television audiences saw nudity in a scripted show came in 1973 with the quick shot of a male butt in M*A*S*H. By the 1980s, many shows began experimenting with female nudity, and eventually,...

The actress revealed all 22 episodes of the series will remain on Hulu and indicated that the series was a casualty of the strike.

The Rookie: Feds Season 2's Fate Finally Revealed By ABC
Image
ABC has officially cancelled The Rookie: Feds after season 1. The spinoff did not achieve the same level of success as its parent series, The Rookie, but still performed well and had a growing viewership with delayed viewing factored in. The prolonged work stoppage due to strikes may have been a contributing factor in the show's cancellation, as it became harder for networks to justify renewing a show that did not achieve runaway success.

The fate of The Rookie: Feds season 2 has now been revealed by ABC, following several months in which the Niecy Nash-Betts spinoff has hung in limbo. A police procedural spinoff of The Rookie, created by Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter, the story followed Simone Clark (Nash-Betts), the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy. The show also starred Felix Solis, Frankie Faison, Britt Robertson, Kevin Zegers, and James Lesure.

Now, after the spinoff concluded season 1 in May...

The Rookie: Feds, The Good Doctor Spinoff Canceled at ABC
Niecy Nash in The Rookie: Feds (2022)
With the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes over, ABC is looking ahead to 2024, and sadly, it's bad news for fans of The Rookie Feds and The Good Lawyer.

The network confirmed late Thursday that The Rookie: Feds had been canceled after a single season, while The Good Doctor spinoff would not be getting a formal series order.

The news for both projects is a bit of a surprise, but given the network's now-stacked midseason slate, these kinds of decisions are expected in the coming weeks.

The Rookie: Feds launched last fall on ABC to a tepid response and middling ratings.

Niecy Nash headlined the spinoff, which was paired with The Rookie at midseason, leading to some of both shows best numbers.

The series also benefited from a robust digital footprint, signaling that while there was interest in the show, many of the viewers weren't interested in watching live.

But the two-punch...

‘The Rookie: Feds’ Canceled By ABC After One Season
Image
ABC’s The Rookie: Feds has been canceled after one season.

A decision on whether the network would renew the freshman drama led by Niecy Nash-Betts was delayed for months amid the ongoing dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, both of which have recently concluded. The ratings for The Rookie: Feds were modest and were trending in a positive direction, as Deadline reported in May.

The Rookie: Feds, the only ABC singular-lead hourlong broadcast series headlined by a Black actor, was not the breakout hit the original Rookie was but delivered respectable ratings that could’ve been enough to secure a second season had it not been for the dual strikes.

Nash-Betts starred as Simone, a former guidance counselor living her dream of becoming an FBI agent, making her the oldest rookie in the agency. Taking on the role came with challenges as many doubted her capabilities, mainly her boss,...
