Tyler Perry‘s most famous character, Madea, has appeared in nearly half the director’s films: a gun-toting, “Hallelu-yer”-shouting force of nature, and an outrageous drag tribute to his mother and aunt. But some films in the Madea Cinematic Universe are gleefully manic, while others arrive in what appears to be a half-finished state of sad melodrama and mediocrity. Not counting her cameo appearance in the otherwise Madea-free “Meet the Browns,” or the animated kids offering “Madea’s Tough Love,” here’s where to find maximum Madea mayhem:
10. “Madea’s Witness Protection”
To look at box office receipts, this one would appear to have been a fan favorite, the second-highest-grossing Madea movie to date. But it came along at a time when Perry was making minor noise about retiring the character, and it really shows. The film looks cheap even by Perry’s budget-minded standards, the jokes are flat, and...

Eighteen years ago, Tyler Perry brought his DIY play to the big screen. Released in 2005, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” chronicles one beleaguered woman’s journey to healing and self-discovery after being betrayed by her philandering husband. The film features all the classical elements of Perry productions. It’s set in a predominantly Black area of the South, there are theatrical church scenes and plenty of the over-the-top histrionics extracted straight from his plays. But more importantly, there was Madea.
Played by Perry himself, the matriarch emerged as a rambunctious, pistol-packing matriarch who’s as comfortable espousing quirky wisdom as she is ferocious clapbacks. Upon its release, the flick got mixed reviews from critics — but it grossed $50.7 million at the box office, just about 10-times more than its budget. Since then, Perry’s released nine additional Madea films, with the eight that came out in theaters grossing $570 million at the box office,...

Shemar Moore began his career as a soap-opera heartthrob on "The Young and the Restless" before starring in hit shows and movies like "S.W.A.T.," "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," and "Criminal Minds." Along the way, the 52-year-old star has had a storied dating life. From Halle Berry to his "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" costar Kimberly Elise, Moore has been connected to quite a few familiar faces.
On Jan. 9, the "S.W.A.T." actor announced he and girlfriend Jesiree Dizon are expecting a baby in February. The baby will be Moore's first and Dizon's third (she has a son and daughter from previous relationships), and the shift into family-man mode marks a big change for the longtime bachelor. However, it's not entirely unexpected.
In the past, Moore was candid about wanting to focus on his career before he started a family, but in recent years, he's opened up about being ready to settle down.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Love Life, Season 2.] Love Life‘s second season has come to a close and with it the story of Marcus (William Jackson Harper) and Mia (Jessica Williams). Unlike Season 1, this pair closed their chapter of HBO Max‘s anthology series on a romantic note as they geared up for a tropical getaway as a married couple. The path to peace wasn’t an easy one though, as Mia contended with her parents and their chaotic lifestyles as well as a cheating blunder that left things on unsolid footing between her and Marcus for a while. Ultimately, they regained their road to romance following a period of reflection on Marcus’ part as the series explored life amid the pandemic and beyond. Unlike some romantic interests on the show, Mia got her own opportunity to shine in an episode encapsulating the relationship between her parents (played by Blair Underwood and Kimberly Elise). We're revisiting 1986 this month leading up to the next Supporting Actress Smackdown. As always Nick Taylor will suggest a few alternates to Oscar's ballot.
It’s been a while since I wrote about someone who had actual Oscar buzz, right? We can argue how Anna Magnani and Kimberly Elise should have contended in their years, but Cathy Tyson’s cryptic and involving turn in Mona Lisa definitely appears to have landed in the sixth spot of the 1986 Supporting Actress lineup. Tyson won Lafca (tying with Dianne Wiest for Hannah and Her Sisters) and was first runner-up with New York. She scored Globe and BAFTA nominations, as well, before missing out with Oscar. Given the strength of her performance, the degree of precursor attention she received, the way her role fits in well-worn paths for ingenue recognition, and the ... um... quality of some of the actual nominees, I’m surprised Tyson didn’t make the cut.

But even on its own terms, Beloved is a genuinely risky, textured piece of filmmaking, honoring Morrison’s astounding novel without softening its most difficult themes. It’s also filled to the brim...

A series by Christopher James looking at the 'Gay Best Friend' trope
Queen Latifah stood out in the ensemble thriller "Set It Off" as Cleo, a butch lesbian bank robber.Be gay, do crimes.
The film business was born with stories of outsiders committing crimes just to survive. The entire gangster genre is built on that premise. Bonnie & Clyde captured the zeitgeist by making robbing banks seem cool. F. Gary Gray’s 1996 thriller Set It Off gives us a very different view of the Bonnie & Clyde story. The film focuses on four inner-city black women each pushed to the brink by a financial system working against them. Rather than lay down and take it, they band together and start robbing banks just to get by. The cast, which includes Jada Pinkett (before Smith), Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise in her first role, is uniformly excellent, building a...

“I’ll bet you I can rob a casino,” Allie Fox tells his wife Margot midway through the first season of the Apple TV+ drama The Mosquito Coast. This is a mark both of how desperate their circumstances are and how highly Allie regards his ability to accomplish what others call the impossible. Margot, meanwhile, doesn’t so much as indulge him with an eye-roll, instead moving on to more practical solutions for their latest debacle.

Frank Abney says the idea for his animated short feature and Oscar hopeful “Canvas” was born out of a need to make a film that was personal.
Six years ago, the animator, whose credits include Pixar titles “Soul,” “Coco,” “Toy Story 4” and “Incredibles 2,” felt he was nevertheless experiencing a rough patch creatively. “I was trying to navigate the industry, and we struggle as artists,” Abney says. “I knew when I created something, I wanted it to be unique to my situation.”
Watching his young niece and observing her carefree nature, he devised a family film in which generations help each other. Abney lost his father when he was 5 and witnessed his mother sharing his grief, his grandfather at her side. “I was curious [about my grandfather] because he was always quiet and withdrawn when I was around him,” Abney says.

Natalie Desselle, one of the stars of Upn series Eve and the Robert Townsend movie B.A.P.S, has died.
Desselle’s manager Dolores Robinson confirmed the news on social media and said the actress died Monday morning.
“Natalie Desselle the beautiful talented actress passed away this morning. Natalie was a bright light. She was an amazing actress and comedienne but also an awesome mother & wife. Sending prayers to her family. I had the pleasure of managing her career,” Robinson said.
Her first roles were in heist film Set It Off alongside Jada Pinkett, Queen Latifah, Kimberly Elise and Vivica A. Fox and the ABC sitcom Family Matters. She later scored one of the lead roles, as Mickey, in B.A.P.S (Black American Princesses) alongside Halle Berry and Martin Landau.

James Gray aims for the stars in his ‘to the stars’ picture and he almost gets there. Lost between our world and his, the Ad Astra lands somewhere between what could have been greatness and what, in the end, falls short.
Another performance from Brad Pitt, aiming for the bleachers, sees him playing Astronaut Roy McBride. The film follows McBride as he undertakes a mission across an unforgiving solar system to uncover the truth about his missing father and his doomed expedition that now, 30 years later, threatens the universe.
The movie is far deeper than that plot can ever detail, it also captures something that is almost impossible to explain.

Thanks to IMAX we’ve got a new trailer to share with you for Brad Pitt’s upcoming sci-fi space exploration film Ad Astra. The trailer is packed full of new footage and offers us a bit more insight on the story. In my opinion, it’s the best trailer yet, and it shows off some stunning visuals.
The James Grey (The Lost City of Z) directed film follows Pitt’s character as he embarks on a mission into space to find his missing dad, who is played by Tommy Lee Jones. As the fate of all life on Earth hangs in the balance, his dad holds the answers to what is happening.

What’s bigger than space? In a fitting twist on filmmaker James Gray’s special brand of massive, large-scale filmmaking, his long-gestating space epic “Ad Astra” is set for an IMAX release when it rolls out in theaters next month.
The film marks star Brad Pitt’s second buzzy role this year, following his turn in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which offered him a markedly different leading man role. In Gray’s film, Pitt is cast as something new for the longtime actor: a space explorer, albeit one with a strange mission that doesn’t follow the typical narrative expectations of the genre.
Gray himself has said his intention with “Ad Astra,” which seems to be something of a mix of “Interstellar” and “Gravity” with one heck of a question mark at its heart, was to feature “the most realistic depiction of space travel that...
