Every Season Of Battlestar Galactica, Ranked
Image
The reimagined "Battlestar Galactica" is one of the greatest and most ambitious science-fiction television shows ever aired. When "Galactica" begins, humanity is living on 12 colony planets named in tribute to the signs of the Zodiac: Caprica, Tauron, etc. About 50 years ago, mankind created robotic servants called the Cylons, who rebelled and waged war until an armistice.

When the series begins, the Cylons (who have upgraded into human-like forms) return and wipe out the 12 colonies. The 50,000 or so survivors flee in a spaceship fleet, guarded by a "Battlestar" warship, Galactica. Led by William Adama (Edward James Olmos) and President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell), the survivors search for the fabled 13th colony: Earth.

Co-creators Ronald D. Moore and David Eick rebooted the short-lived 1978 original "Galactica" by taking out the cheese in favor of drama and political resonance. Moore, who broke into TV writing on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," got to air...

Battlestar Galactica Fans Finally Get an Update on Long-Delayed Reboot
Image
The latest attempt to revive the Battlestar Galactica has received some disappointing news. The sci-fi series originated as a one-season series that ran from 1978 to 1979, with a continuation titled Galactica 1980 airing ten episodes in 1980. The most popular incarnation of Battlestar Galactica was the Syfy Channel Original series from Ronald D. Moore, which originated as a miniseries in 2003 before becoming a series that aired from 2004 to 2009. That series breathed new life into the franchise, and in the years since it went off the air, NBCUniversal has attempted to relaunch the franchise, bringing on Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail.

Sadly, it looks like the Battlestar Galactica revival has hit a major speed bump. Or is it more like a brick wall? According to Deadline, NBCUniversal's streaming service Peacock has decided not to move forward with the series. Reportedly, the series was never given the green light and has been in development since...

"Culture Of Fear": Battlestar Galactica's Lucy Lawless Recalls Intense Filming Environment
Image
Battlestar Galactica's intense atmosphere and secrecy led to a culture of fear and anxiety among the cast. Actors were kept in a state of insecurity due to unexpected character deaths and not knowing if they'd be killed off. Lawless has also appeared in Xena: Warrior Princess, Spartacus, and The X-Files.

The 2004 reboot of Battlestar Galactica remains one of the best sci-fi series ever made, with a loyal fan following who still enjoy rewatching the episodes. For many of the series actors, however, the experience of making the show was hardly an enjoyable one. In an interview with Business Insider, cast member Lucy Lawless revealed the show's intense tone and producers' obsession with secrecy created a culture of "fear" and "anxiety" on the set.

The original 1978 Battlestar Galactica series, from creator Glen A. Larson, was a lighthearted space adventure that followed in the thematic footsteps of Star Wars. For the 2004 reimagining,...

Battlestar Galactica Didnt Do Enough With Starbuck
Image
Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2024, the Battlestar Galactica reboot marked one of television's first high-profile fusions of sociopolitical sci-fi with an HBO series' prestige drama sensationalism. Battlestar's bleak realism complete with a gray color palette, cinma vrit cinematography, and an apocalyptic scenario populated with fluidly flawed characters helped Ronald D. Moore and David Eick's reimagining of Glen A. Larson's 1978 series transcend genre barriers. It gathered accolades by the truckload, turned weekly space opera into watercooler material, and opened the floodgates for philosophically-minded projects like Foundation and Moore's own For All Mankind.

Battlestar Galactica: How Poor Planning Doomed Caprica and Other Spinoffs
Image
This article contains spoilers for Battlestar Galactica.

Think back to the early 2000s. Star Trek‘s vision of an optimistic future no longer kept pace with the post-9/11 world. Instead, Trek writer Ronald D. Moore left the franchise to work with David Eick on reviving a cheesy sci-fi show from the 1970s best remembered for its weird cyborg dog and cool-looking evil robots.

And yet, somehow, Moore and Eick made Battlestar Galactica into a hit, an ambitious mix of deep lore, compelling character building, and religious yearning. Not even the controversial final season, which took leaps that rivaled the ending of Lost, could diminish the series popularity.

So why in the world did the Battlestar Galactica spinoffs flop so hard? For Eick, the answer is simple: Poor planning and lack of vision.

“Ron’s involvement vacillated so there was less consistency and less reliability and, as we shored up his absence,...

This Is Why 'Battlestar Galactica's Spin-Off 'Caprica' Failed
Image
Fifteen years ago, Ronald D. Moore and David Eick changed the science fiction TV landscape with their reboot of Battlestar Galactica. A far cry from the campy but fondly-remembered 1970s TV series from which it sprang, Galactica was a huge hit with both audiences and critics. However, once the show ended, its spin-off, Caprica, aired one poorly-received season on SyFy and sank without a trace. In a new oral history of Galactica for SlashFilm.com, Eick explains why:...

Why Battlestar Galactica's Spin-Offs Didn't Work, Straight From The Co-Creator [Exclusive]
Image
For the 15th anniversary of the "Battlestar Galactica" finale, I spoke with several of the show's writers and actors for an inside look at how it reached that conclusion. One of them was David Eick, the series' co-creator (with Ronald D. Moore). I asked the man who resurrected "Galactica" out of its campy 1970s roots why attempts to keep the franchise going faltered.

You see, "Battlestar" hadn't even been finished a year when a prequel spin-off debuted: "Caprica," an ensemble drama set more than 50 years before the series on the eponymous planet (one of the 12 colonies razed by the robotic Cylons at the outset of "Battlestar Galactica"). The series debuted in January 2010 and wrapped that November after a single, 19-episode first season -- its planned multi-year run aborted by low ratings.

Next, Eick and co. pivoted with "Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome," a second prequel (but after "Caprica") set during the first human/Cylon war.

Reaching Daybreak: An Oral History Of Battlestar Galactica's Final Season [Exclusive]
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Battlestar Galactica."

15 years ago, on March 20, 2009, "Battlestar Galactica" concluded its run with the series finale "Daybreak," and man, what a frakkin' good show that was. A reboot of a short-lived 1970s series, "Battlestar Galactica" follows a starship fleet searching for the fabled planet Earth after humanity's home, the 12 Colonies of Man, are destroyed by their robotic creations, the Cylon. I was a little too young to watch "Galactica" weekly on its first airing, but thanks to the magic of Netflix, I downed the whole thing the summer before I entered high school.

It was the first show of that length that I watched from beginning to end. I love "Star Trek," but I'll always appreciate "Battlestar" for going further than even the Final Frontier dared push. "Battlestar" co-creator Ronald D. Moore got his start in TV writing on "Star Trek" and set out to make...

Every Cylon in Battlestar Galactica, Explained
Image
As Peacock's reboot of Battlestar Galactica continues to take shape under the direction of Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, all eyes turn to the impending war between humanity and the Cylons. Also known as Cybernetic Life-Form Nodes, the Cylons are a race of robotic humanoids built for combat by Graystone Industries that wage war for control of the Twelve Colonies.

Each Cylon model is given a specific number and possesses different specialties, motives, personalities, and alliances as the eternal war continues to rage on. Although Peacock's anticipated reboot of BSG has yet to receive a release date, it's paramount to understand each Cylon's basic functions, primary objectives, and where their loyalties remain. Rather than breaking down every primitive and antiquated model type, it's best to differentiate the humanoid Cylons in Battlestar Galactica before the launch of Peacock's reboot.

Guillermo Del Toro Almost Made A Hulk Show For Marvel: Here's Why It Never Happened
Image
The planned Guillermo del Toro Hulk show never happened because del Toro chose to direct Pacific Rim instead, causing conflicts with filming schedules. Del Toro's vision for the show included a younger Bruce Banner and a mix of practical effects and CGI for the Hulk, deviating from past iterations. The show would have disrupted MCU continuity by potentially setting it about 10 years in the past, conflicting with the established timeline and potentially confusing audiences.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has no shortage of Hulk appearances across its movies and TV shows, but the angry, green monster was slated to star in his own show from Guillermo del Toro that never happened. Back in 2010, shortly after the release of the first MCU Hulk movie and Disney's acquisition of Marvel, Marvel and ABC were finalizing a deal for a Hulk show, with famed Pan's Labyrinth director del Toro at its helm. Del Toro's...

1 Battlestar Galactica Character Has A Secret Adama Connection
Image
A real-life connection between Admiral Wiliam Adama (Edward James Olmos) and another Battlestar Galactica character adds yet another layer of nuance to the acclaimed sci-fi series. 2004's Battlestar Galactica was an early trailblazer for the intersection of prestige TV and the sci-fi genre. Audiences were hooked through the show's four seasons, thanks to several compelling mysteries, the relentless tension conjured by the existence of humanoid Cylons, and heady story connections that still titillate to this day.

Characters like Admiral William Adama and Gaius Baltar and his visions of Six are fascinating, well-written characters with distinct strengths, flaws, and motives. Admiral Adama's Edward James Olmos was especially integral to the success of Battlestar Galactica for several reasons. Not only was Olmos at least partially responsible for “So say we all” becoming an integral part of the show’s identity, but he also shares a special connection with Viper pilot Brendan "Hot Dog" Costanza.

The 14 Best Battlestar Galactica Episodes, Ranked
Image
The re-imagined "Battlestar Galactica" series, developed by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, hit our screens in 2003. The ongoing story would eventually end in 2009, having picked up several accolades -- including winning Emmys and Hugo awards -- along the way. Telling the tale of the titular capital ship and its ragtag fleet of civilians and military personnel, "Battlestar Galactica" follows the last remnants of humanity fleeing their robotic race (and humans' former slaves), the Cylons. In an era obsessed with grim and gritty reboots, "Battlestar Galactica" stood out as a television series that honored the original series and charted brave new territory, too.

Moore and Eick's series was as much a study of theology as it was a military drama with detailed and complex character stories. Throughout the Battlestar's long journey to find a new home, the show would create some of the most memorable sci-fi television episodes to date.

Walking Tall is getting rebooted at USA Network from Battlestar Galactica executive producer David Eick. Deadline reports that Eick has sold a small-screen reboot of the 1973 action movie Walking Tall with WWE Superstar Charlotte Flair attached to star. This marks the second Walking Tall remake to feature a pro wrestler in the lead role, as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson previously starred in a Walking Tall remake in 2004.

Charlotte Flair, the daughter of pro wrestling legend Ric Flair, is one of the WWE's biggest stars of today. She is the most decorated female performer in company history as a 12-time women's champion in WWE. Heading into the event as the SmackDown Women's Champion, Charlotte also headlined WrestleMania in 2019 alongside Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey. Her acting career is limited, but the wrestler previously appeared in Psych: The Movie in 2017.

Battlestar Galactica Movie Is Happening with X-Men Producer Simon Kinberg
Image
Simon Kinberg has signed up to produce and write the long-awaited Battlestar Galactica movie. Dylan Clark will produce alongside the Dark Phoenix director. Kinberg is probably best-known for his work with the X-Men franchise over the last decade. He was also attached to co-write the Boba Fett movie with James Mangold before Disney and Lucasfilm decided to pull the plug after a less than ecstatic response to Solo: A Star Wars Story. He also worked as a creative consultant on 2015's The Force Awakens.

Talks of a Battlestar Galactica movie first started back in 2009 when series creator Glen A. Larson entered negotiations with Universal Pictures. At the time, X-Men director Brian Singer was attached to direct. Since then, an army of writers has come and go, while Singer exited the project after a few years. Simon Kinberg had this to say about signing on for the long-awaited project.

The Challenge of Reviving Battlestar Galactica
Juliette Harrisson Sep 24, 2019

Battlestar Galactica had one of the most successful reboots ever. With a new show on the way, we examine what made it so special...

This article comes from Den of Geek UK.

Warning: contains spoilers for Battlestar Galactica.

Battlestar Galactica sits alongside Stargate, Star Trek, and Doctor Who as one of the biggest sci-fi franchises of the late 20th and early 21st century, sporting an original 1978 series, a 1980 follow-up, a complete reboot starting with a mini-series in 2003 and running for four seasons, and two spin-off series, prequels Caprica and Blood and Chrome.

With the news that a new spin-off in the universe of Ron D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica is planned, this seems a good time to look at just a few of the things that made it so special.

The Cylons

Perhaps the single biggest change between the 1978 series and the 2003 "re-imagining" is the nature of the Cylons.

Writer-director Paul Dano and Ed Oxenbould on the set of ‘Wildlife’.

Ed Oxenbould rates his role in Paul Dano’s Wildlife, in which he stars alongside Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal, as among his favourites.

In the film, Oxenbould plays 14-year-old Joe, who has just moved to Montana with his parents Jeannette (Mulligan) and Jerry (Gyllenhaal). The ‘60s set coming-of-age tale centres on him as their marriage slowly disintegrates.

Oxenbould tells If that Joe is a complex, interesting character, who was bolstered through the writing of Dano and partner Zoe Kazan, who adapted Richard Ford’s novel of the same name.

“It was really different to anything I’d done before. It required a lot of emotion and a lot of watching, a lot of observing. That’s what made it seem really interesting; I thought it would be a great challenge.”

Ronald D. Moore Says The Cylons in Battlestar Galactica Never Had a Plan
Do you all remember how every episode of Ronald D. Moore's SyFy series Battlestar Galactica series started out? Here's a reminder:

“The Cylons were created by man. They rebelled. They evolved. There are many copies. And they have a plan.”

Well, turns out that the Cylons never had a plan! Moore recently showed up at the Atx Television Festival with several other members of the cast of the classic series to talk about it. According to The Los Angeles Times, who was in attendance, Moore revealed that the Cylons had no plan, and the only reason that they used that text at the beginning of the show was because it sounded cool.

Moore said this was, essentially, just something co-executive producer David Eick thought sounded cool, that audiences would love and that they could figure out later. They never did and, said Moore, “For the next 14 years of my...

Star Trek (2009)
‘Star Trek’: 50 Years of Films and TV, Ranked From Worst to Best
Star Trek (2009)
Beyond the 19 films and TV shows that make up official on-screen “Star Trek” canon, there are quite a few more efforts that could, philosophically, be a part of this list.

There’s the rich legacy of officially licensed novels and comic books that brought the characters to life in print form. There’s the technology invented by production designers that eventually became real-life wizardry. There’s the 1999 film “Galaxy Quest” — technically a parody, but spiritually one of the best “Star Trek” movies ever made.

Read More: ‘Star Trek’ Wants to Regulate Fan Culture, But It’s Not Going to Be Easy

There are the vibrant fan communities that, even during the franchise’s many dormant periods, ensured that “Star Trek” would never actually die. And there are the many real-life scientists and astronauts whose passion for boldly going into the real depths of the unknown were inspired by a show...

Lisa Joy To Pen New "Galactica" Film
Producer and screenwriter Lisa Joy (HBO's "Westworld") will pen the upcoming film adaptation of Glen Larson's 1978 sci-fi TV series "Battlestar Galactica" for Universal Pictures and Bluegrass Films.

The story takes place in a distant corner of the universe known as the Twelve Colonies. The human civilization inhabiting the colonies has been in a war with the Cylons, and after being virtually wiped out by the cybernetic race, the surviving humans are forced to live on spaceships.

Francis Lawrence is reportedly circling the project, but there is no official attachment at this time. Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark will produce.

The film is separate to the multiple award-winning four season-long Sci-Fi Channel series from Ronald D. Moore and David Eick.

Cloverfield (2008)
How ‘Battlestar Galactica,’ ‘Outlander’ composer Bear McCreary is raising the bar on music for TV
Cloverfield (2008)
If you’ve watched TV in the past 10 years, chances are you know Bear McCreary’s music. He’s become one of the most (if not the most) sought-after and prolific composers in television, ever since he came into his own writing the boundary-pushing score for the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series. He counts The Walking Dead, Outlander, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. among his credits. And this March theater-goers got to experience his music with a big screen presentation; he composed the chilling and thrilling score for J.J. Abrams’ 10 Cloverfield Lane. Today McCreary is juggling so many projects that he can’t count all his current TV shows and movies and video games — “I can’t even tell. I honestly don’t even know,” how many projects he’s in the midst of, he said during an interview at Cafe Laurent in Culver City, CA. The...

CBS Picks Up Historical Drama About Killer Countess Elizabeth Bathory
CBS has committed to an original historical drama series about the 16th century Hungarian countess and infamous serial killer, Elizabeth Bathory. Deadline reports the series, Bathory, comes from the creative team of David Eick, formally an executive producer for Battlestar Galactica, and producer Joel Silver.

Known as the "Blood Countess," Bathory has quite the evil reputation. She maintains the record for "most prolific female murderer" with the highest number of victims estimated at 650. In folklore and popular culture, she is most often depicted as a vampiric figure, bathing in the blood of young women in order to retain a youth-like appearance. For centuries, she's been the inspiration behind several works of literature, film, music, and even video games. However, this will be the first time her story will be set on the small screen.

No news yet on the project's airdate.

Falling Skies season 5 episode 10 review: Reborn
Falling Skies' final season wound up a mawkish missed opportunity, as this week's finale episode showed...

This review contains spoilers.

5.10 Reborn

If you've stuck around for all five seasons of Falling Skies, the ending of the show won't come as a surprise to you. Nor will the beginning of the show, for that matter. Falling Skies loves its big, dramatic speeches, and the finale episode won't leave fans of voiceover or dramatic monologue disappointed. Indeed, the finale pushes in more speeches than battles, which for a show promising a climactic battle, is more than a little disappointing. But what's left to say about Falling Skies' final season other than to acknowledge it as a lost opportunity?

Yes, Falling Skies stays true to its corny roots, in spite of the promise of bloodshed and a war to end all wars and all that good stuff. The deus-ex-machina weapon is ready,...

Falling Skies Boss Weighs In on Series Finale's Big Twists (Including a Very Final One That Didn't Make the Cut)
Falling Skies (2011)
The following contains out-of-this-world spoilers from the Falling Skies finale.

It was back in May, during Upfronts week and more than a month before Falling Skies‘ Season 5 opener, that Noah Wyle spoiled for me the outcome of the TNT series’ finale.

“I don’t want to give everything away, but… we win,” he let slip with a wink. Even so, “We thin the herd along the way,” he warned. “Not everybody makes it to the finish line.”

Now it really is over: “Falling Skies” aired the finale of its fifth and final season tonight on TNT. Tom Mason and co. have battled all manner of extraterrestrial creatures, gruesome weapons that manipulated once-loyal members of the 2nd Mass to turn on their own, and fellow humans (non-alien-manipulated ones) who were plenty troublesome in their own selfish or fearful agendas, as if a powerful alien threat weren’t trouble enough.
