- He had a ranch near Pearblossom, Califormia--in the Antelope Valley--that was used for location shooting, mostly for westerns, from the the late 1940s through the late 1950s.
- A former cattle rancher, he turned to acting in and directing westerns in 1917, appearing with his trained horse. During the sound era he became a prolific writer and occasional producer/director of vehicles for Gene Autry, Tex Ritter and others, often for RKO, Monogram and Republic. Retired in 1974 to publish his autobiography "Written, Produced and Directed by Oliver Drake".
