Pernel’s first drama sees Suchet, in his first TV role in years, play George, a diabetic man who moves next door to his daughter Zoe Dalton, portrayed by Sally Bretton (Death in Paradise, Beyond Paradise). Vera really likes to keep us waiting. Series 11 of this beloved British detective series began broadcasting back in summer 2021, and after four episodes were released between then and January 2022, there’s been a year-long unexplained wait for the last two feature-length episodes of the series, which finally began airing on ITV1 on Sunday 15th January.
But like buses, you wait for one series of Vera and two arrive at once, as straight after Series 11 finishes we’ll be getting four more weekly episodes making up Series 12 as well, starting on 29th January.
Not only that, there’s another Vera instalment, The Rising Tide, on the way later this year, based on Ann Cleeves’s latest Vera novel of the same name.
So what can we expect from the upcoming episodes of Vera? More gruesome murders, of course, and more stunning Northumberland scenery, but there’s also going to be more...

With filming now underway, ITV has confirmed Season 9 details of crime drama Vera. Brenda Blethyn is back as the unorthodox but brilliantly perceptive eponymous detective in four feature-length episodes. The first installment, written by Paul Logue, is titled Blind Spot and unfolds as forensic psychologist Joanne Caswell is found dead, her body dumped on a landfill site far from home. She had been looking into the crime of a former patient who had recently committed suicide, and Vera must follow Joanne’s trail to uncover who might have had motive to kill her. Blethyn is joined by an ensemble that includes Peter Davison (Doctor Who), James Atherton (Coronation Street), Jodie McNee (Britannia), Adrian Lukis (Collateral) and Paul Kaye (Game Of Thrones). Kenny Doughty also returns as Detective Sergeant Aiden Healy. Completing Vera’s team are Jon Morrison, Riley Jones and Ibinabo Jack. A consistent winner for ITV, Season 8 averaged 8.4M...

Vera — probably the best contemporary detective drama on British TV — returns to the U.S. with a fifth season being debuted nationally on Acorn TV. Based on novels by Shetland’s Ann Cleeves, Vera is a no nonsense Northumbrian detective with a brusk exterior and a well buried heart. It’s tempting to describe her as a female Wallander but unlike her Swedish counterpart she doesn’t spend half an hour caught up in self-indulgent introspection before uttering a sentence.
I interviewed leading lady Brenda Blethyn last year and she was an absolute delight. The antithesis of her dowdy onscreen persona. At the time, season 5 was very much up in the air. Like most things these days, it’s fate depended very much on the ratings of season 4. Unsurprisingly (in my view) Vera season 4 was one of the few shows in the UK last year to satisfy the TV critics...

If you’re an action movie fan you’re probably familiar with the phrase “two men enter, one man leaves”, but what if that principle, normally reserved for fight arenas, was taken to the streets of London?

The script takes this London gangster caper down like a rock
Behind that Bergmanish title lies a Ronseal tagline: "Two men … 12 hours … One must die". The one we're meant to hope doesn't is Drake (Kenny Doughty), a London chancer getting his comeuppance for a illicit bunkup with a rival gangster's hot moll. But Ian is so nondescript it's hard to mind if one of the standard-issue baddies has their ethnically indeterminate way with him. The script acts on the film as a rock does when strapped to a corpse, but there's a certain noirish sheen to the cinematography that means the whole thing slips down sweeter than it really ought. Cs

The awkwardly titled “I Against I” is a new British thriller from writer director James Marquand, son of Richard Marquand, best known for helming “Return of the Jedi” and “Jagged Edge” back in the 1980s. The film is a complex, noir-tinged affair, with a twisting, cat and mouse plot played out against a stylishly modern London background, its events taking place over the course of a single night and intertwined with flashbacks. Without giving too much away, things kick off with a businessman called Drake (Kenny Doughty, “The Incident”) being snatched by the ruthless gangster Joseph (Mark Womack, “Route Irish”), who accuses him of having killed his father Tommy (veteran Brit television actor John Castle). Although Drake denies the murder, Joseph has CCTV footage of him in the building at the time of the crime, and with Tommy having owed him money, the pieces seem to fit. When Drake claims...

Alexandre Courtes' The Incident was a divisive one when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival but audiences in France - where the English language film was produced - will have a chance to see what the chatter was about soon with the upcoming theatrical release. Here's how Tiff described it:It's a thin line that separates a domesticated man from his repressed animalistic side. On a dark and rainy night, three friends are forced to cross that divide as they navigate a labyrinth of madness and brutality in The Incident. George (Rupert Evans), Max (Kenny Doughty) and Ricky (Joseph Kennedy) play in a band together, struggling to record their first album and performing small gigs between shifts cooking for the inmates of the...

Asylum Blackout is exactly the movie it promises to be-- the story of what happens when the power goes out at a high-security asylum and the inmates stage a breakout. What makes this different from most other thrillers you'll see, though, is the sane people left to survive in the asylum are three slackers and bandmates who had been working in the asylum kitchen for easy money. You can meet those four guys in the exclusive clip we're premiering below, in which you see both the dismal conditions in the cafeteria and the potential start of the rebellion. Take a look: After premiering at the Toronto Film Festival under the title The Incident, the movie was renamed Asylum Blackout and is now coming to theaters and VOD via IFC Midnight. It's the feature directing debut for Alexander Courtes and stars Rupert Evans, Kenny Doughty and Joseph Kennedy. Below you can...

Snow Piercer‘s really slowed down on the casting — it’s been more than a month, since the last item, as a matter of fact — but Variety reports on the picture once more, telling us that Kenny Doughty (Titus) has signed for Bong Joon-ho‘s post-apocalyptic feature, which should begin shooting in just a few weeks.
Also starring Chris Evans, Octavia Spencer, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, John Hurt, and Ewen Bremner, Snow Piercer — written by Joon-ho and producer Park Chan-wook — is a futuristic tale, in which Earth’s last living creatures inhabit a train, named “Snow Piercer,” and begin to falter under enormous pressure.
While he’s at it, Doughty also has a directing debut coming up. Titled Vengeance Waits, this is a “British revenge thriller” that’s been written by C.D. Waits and will star Richard Coyle (Prince of Persia). Production is scheduled to commence in September.

A few weeks ago, we brought you news of Ewen Bremner’s (Trainspotting, Jack the Giant Killer) casting in Bong Joon-ho’s indie Sci-Fi film Snow Piercer. This project, produced by Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Thirst), has just gained another to the cast.
Variety reports that Kenny Doughty (The Incident, Elizabeth) has just been cast in Snow Piercer. Doughty joins Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, and John Hurt in this post-apocalyptic thriller.
Snow Piercer follows Chris Evans’ character who is looking for his kidnapped son in a future world where a failed experiment to stop global warming caused an Ice Age that killed off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snow Piercer, a train that travels around the globe, powered by a sacred perpetual-motion engine.
If you’re familiar with Park Chan-wook’s work, you’ll know that this film will not be your ordinary post-apocalyptic film.
