‘Practical Magic 2’ Sets Early Fall 2026 Release
Image
Warner Bros just announced on social that the Nicole Kidman-Sandra Bullock sequel, Practical Magic 2, is hitting cinemas on Sept. 18, 2026.

Note that’s not the post Labor Day weekend slot which Warners typically reserves for spooky movies; currently their DC title Clayface is occupying that date, Sept. 11, 2026.

Practical Magic 2 will go head-to-head with Sony’s Zach Cregger take on Resident Evil on Sept. 18. Warners always had the date on hold for an untitled movie.

Susanne Bier is directing the sequel which is penned by Akiva Goldsman. Bullock, Kidman and Denise Dinovi are producing.

The original 1998 movie, which was directed by Griffin Dunne and grossed more than $47 million stateside, followed two witch sisters, raised by their eccentric aunts in a small town, who are faced with closed-minded prejudice and a curse that threatens to prevent them from finding lasting love.

It's Happening! 'Practical Magic' 2 Gets a Magical Release Date
Image
Grab everything y'all need for a midnight margarita and meet us on September 18, 2026. That's when Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return for the Practical Magic sequel. The announcement was made today with a witchy and fun video on Warner Bros. social media. The highly anticipated sequel is an update to the 1998 film. The video is voice-only, narrated by Kidman and Bullock practically casting a spell, rhyming right into the release date of September 18, 2026.

Back in February, Kidman, who plays Gillian Owens, teased the movie at the Time's Women of the Year event in Los Angeles. She said the plans for the sequel were "moving ahead rapidly" but that "You can ask Sandy," for more details. "Sandy" being Bullock, who plays Sally Owens. Kidman teased that the sequel "just needs a little magic," to happen. If only we knew.

‘Practical Magic 2,’ Starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, Sets Fall 2026 Release Date
Image
“Practical Magic 2,” a follow-up to the 1998 fantasy comedy, will cast a theatrical spell next fall. The witchy sequel, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, is set to debut on Sept. 18, 2026.

Bullock and Kidman are reprising their roles as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, who descend from a long line of witches. In the original movie, based on the novel by Alice Hoffman, they find themselves fighting off a curse that kills the men they fall in love with. It’s unclear where the second film will pick up, though the story is reportedly based on a later installment in Hoffman’s “Practical Magic” book series.

Warner Bros. released a short, text-only teaser with a voiceover from Bullock and Kidman, who chant the following incantation: “Tooth of wolf and morning dew. Something old and something new. Let the spell begin to mix. Sept. 18, 2026.” On its current release date, “Practical Magic 2...

Lionsgate Snaps Up Hot Action Thriller Spec ‘Renegotiate’ From Mark Townend
Image
Exclusive: In a competitive situation, Lionsgate has landed Renegotiate, a high-concept action-thriller spec by Mark Townend, sources tell us.

The film centers on a troubled FBI crisis negotiator who finds himself stuck in a time loop, re-living the events of a bombing and struggling to stop it before time runs out. Think Source Code meets Phone Booth. Ric Roman Waugh and Brendon Boyea will produce for CineMachine, alongside Brian Kavanagh Jones and Fred Berger for Range, with Aj Bourscheid executive producing.

Townend’s deal is remarkable, we’re told, for a writer with no produced credits, particularly given that the script was taken out without any talent attachments. Sources described the outcome as a three-way bidding war that resulted in a mid-six-figure guaranteed fee against a low-seven-figure purchase/bonus. The script was taken out on the first Monday of April, and by Friday of that week, 20 premium production companies were chasing aggressively.

'Just Needs a Little Magic': Nicole Kidman Shares Practical Magic 2 Update
Image
Practical Magic 2 is in the works at Warner Bros. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock will reprise their roles from the original 1998 movie for the live-action follow-up.

Speaking with Variety at Time's Women of the Year event in Los Angeles, Kidman was careful not to reveal too much about the highly-anticipated sequel, saying only that development on Practical Magic 2 was "movie ahead rapidly." After Variety pushed for more information, such as if Kidman had seen a script, the actor playfully remarked, "I'm not answering anymore. You can ask Sandy [Bullock]." Kidman then confirmed that "we're not doing it yet," meaning that Practical Magic 2 hasn't started production, as it "needs a little magic" still before filming can begin.

Nightmare Before Christmas' Jack Skellington Was A Pirate Before He Died - Theory Explained
Image
The Nightmare Before Christmas doesn’t explain or give hints about Jack Skellington’s backstory, but his appearance in another movie might have revealed he was a pirate. Directed by Henry Selick with a story by Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas was released in 1993 and introduced the audience to Jack Skellington, a skeleton who lives in Halloweentown and serves as its Pumpkin King, leading the yearly Halloween celebrations. Tired of doing the same things every year, Jack wanders through the forest and comes across the doors to other Holidays, and becoming fascinated by Christmas Town, he decides to bring Christmas to Halloweentown.

Thanks to his unique design and story, Jack Skellington has become part of pop culture and one of the most beloved animated characters – it’s no surprise, then, that Jack has appeared in other movies by Selick, from Tim Burton’s universe, and outside these worlds. One cameo appearance,...

Winona Ryder Didn't Know One Of Her Best Films Flopped At The Box Office
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

A movie doesn't have to be successful to be a classic. Take "Heathers" — written by Daniel Waters, directed by Michael Lehmann, starring Winona Ryder.

Ryder, fresh off "Beetlejuice," played another death-obsessed teenager. Unlike gothic outsider Lydia Deetz, though, Veronica Sawyer from "Heathers" is in the in-crowd. She hangs out with Westerburg High School's trio of mean girls, all named Heather, but feels disillusioned. So her new bad boy lover J.D. (Christian Slater) convinces her to pull a lethal prank on queen bee Heather Chandler (Kim Walker).

"Heathers" is the template for other biting black comedy teen movies, from "Mean Girls" to "Jennifer's Body." It even inspired a "Heathers" musical! But it only made $1.1 million on a $3 million budget.

Entertainment Weekly's oral history of "Heathers" (published in 2014 for its 25th anniversary) has some explanations for why it flopped. Distributor New World Pictures...

Halle Berry open to Catwoman sequel — but only if she’s directing!
Image
Halle Berry made a recent appearance for an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to discuss her new movie Never Let Go. During the interview, host Jimmy Fallon pointed out that this year, 2024, marks the 20th anniversary of Catwoman - something that Berry herself celebrated with a recent post on social media in which she posed with a few rescue kittens.

When asked by Jimmy Fallon about what she remembered about making the film, Berry stated she “loved it” despite it being “panned” by critics. Once asked if she would don the cat suit again, Berry told Fallon “Maybe, if I could direct it.”

Could this be the star's way of leaving the door open for yet another appearance as the Pitof version of the character? The legendary actress is at a stage in her career where she can do whatever she wants, but even if she were to direct another Catwoman project,...

You Can Blame James Bond For Halle Berry's Controversial Catwoman Costume
Image
During the ascendancy of superhero cinema in the 2000s, characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man, the X-Men, and Batman were making money hand-over-fist. Comic book fans were pleased that filmmakers were finally adapting notable comic book material more directly, rather than finding sleeker, easier, more "movie-friendly" versions of their favorite characters. It helped that studios were finally willing to put a lot of money into less well-known superhero characters like Iron Man and Thor (considered C-grade characters when their respective movies came out). It also helped that special effects technology had reached an inflection point where depicting superpowers on camera finally looked a little more realistic.

Costume designers also started to put more time and attention into superhero outfits, trying to find costumes that looked practical on a real human body. On the comics page, outlandish costumes look natural. On a flesh-and-blood actor, a lot more nuance is required. Designers started adding texture,...

Warner Bros. Had A Strict Batman Rule For Halle Berry's Catwoman Movie
Image
When Tim Burton's "Batman Returns" was released in 1992, it was received with — to this author's recollection — a mixed amount of enthusiasm. The film was a hit, making over $266 million on an $80 million budget, but Burton's vision was described by critics and some audiences as being too odd. It was a bleak and strange film about how heroes and villains are indistinguishable, both of them bizarre freaks in a film noir world defined by entropy. The most notable character from "Batman Returns" was Catwoman, played by a vinyl-clad Michelle Pfeiffer. Indeed, the character was so popular that Warner Bros. semi-announced a "Catwoman" stand-alone feature in 1993, set to re-team Pfeiffer and Burton.

That feature never came together. The script, written by Daniel Waters, was considered too "adult," and by 1995, Pfeiffer had lost interest. For a brief moment, Ashley Judd was slated to take over the role, but she also dropped out.

The Artwork of Legendary Producer Denise Di Novi Parts the Veil on a Painful Past
Image
Creativity can be a kind of magic. Whether it's actually an outpouring of the subconscious or something arbitrary that's given meaning in hindsight, sometimes the art uses the artist to finally get born. If you're an artist, you may ask yourself, "Where did this come from? How did this get there?" Especially if you've never done it before. That's what happened with legendary film producer Denise Di Novi, who is having her first gallery show after four years of painting. "I never had any history of painting at all. I mean, I've been a creative person all my life, and my parents are creative. My dad's a jazz musician. My late mother was a dancer, and many of my relatives are artists," explained Di Novi in an interview with MovieWeb ahead of her exhibitions (information here).

Di Novi is the producer of numerous classics Heathers, Edward Scissorhands, A Walk to Remember,...

‘Ed Wood’ Producer Denise Di Novi on Tim Burton’s Classic: Filmmaking Can Be ‘Discouraging,’ but This One Gave Me Hope
Image
The enduring legacy of campy cult favorite “Ed Wood” is still celebrated 30 years later.

The beloved 1994 film was directed by Tim Burton and starred Johnny Depp as the filmmaker known for helming B-movie greats, most infamously 1959’s “Plan 9 from Outer Space.” Wood’s other features include “Orgy of the Dead,” “Glen or Glenda,” and “Bride of the Monster.” He was awarded the Golden Turkey title of Worst Director in 1975.

Burton’s 1994 biopic “Ed Wood” was written by Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander, and co-starred Bill Murray, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Martin Landau, who won an Oscar for portraying Bela Lugosi.

“Ed Wood” producer Denise Di Novi detailed her own love of the film three decades later, explaining why “Ed Wood” is one of the most personal projects for both her and longtime collaborator Burton to date. After working as the creative consultant on David Cronenberg’s iconic “Videodrome,” Di...

There's a Joyousness to That Movie: Practical Magic Sequel Will Honor the Original Movies Themes
Image
Practical Magic producer Denise Di Novi has opened up about the upcoming sequel to 1998s romance fantasy movie. Despite initially receiving mixed reviews, the film went on to become a cult classic among fans due to its timely themes.

During a recent interview with People, Di Novi assured that Practical Magic 2 would honor the legacy and themes of the original movie, while delivering something different for fans to enjoy. She stressed that the sequels creative team is adamant on retaining the things that people had loved from the first installment. "I think the big mistake people make with sequels is when they kind of want to reinvent the wheel and be totally original and surprise people that it's different or whatever," Di Novi said. "[The team] gets how important the first movie is to so many people, women in particular, and we want to honor that for sure."

Practical Magic sequel will honor the original film
Image
A couple months ago, it was officially announced that Warner Bros. is moving forward with a sequel to the 1998 film Practical Magic, with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reprising the roles of sister witches Sally and Gillian Owens. Now producer Denise Di Novi has given an interview to People where she promised that the new film will honor the original and not attempt to reinvent the wheel.

Based on a novel by Alice Hoffman and directed by Griffin Dunne from a screenplay by Robin Swicord, Akiva Goldsman, and Adam Brooks, Practical Magic revolves around two witch sisters, Sally Owens (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman), who live in a small town alongside their eccentric Aunt Frances (Stockard Channing). As the sisters attempt to practice their craft, they face closed-minded prejudice and a curse that threatens to prevent them from ever finding lasting love. The curse dictates that whoever falls...

Practical Magic sequel to 'honor' themes of the original movie
Image
Sometimes, when legacy sequels happen, producers and filmmakers misinterpret what fans actually want to see from the film, making the finished product a disappointment, especially when it's a modern follow-up to an older movie. Producer Denise Di Novi is aware of this trend and wants to ensure fans that they don't intend to let that happen with the recently announced Practical Magic sequel.

Talking to People, Di Novi, who worked as a producer on the original 1998 movie, discussed their intentions for the upcoming film, saying she believes "the big mistake people make with sequels is when they kind of want to reinvent the wheel."

The desire to shake things up for a continuation is understandable. Writers, directors, and even actors often want to put their own spin on classic material. But it's a very delicate balance. People are serious about their nostalgia and no one likes to see their favorite...

‘Practical Magic’ Producer Says Sequel Will “Honor” Original Film
Image
The forthcoming Practical Magic sequel will keep the spirit of the original.

In an interview with People magazine, producer Denise Di Novi, who worked on 1998 film and will co-produce the upcoming follow-up, teased that the new film will “honor” the original.

“I think the big mistake people make with sequels is when they kind of want to reinvent the wheel and be totally original and surprise people that it’s different or whatever,” Di Novi said.

She noted that the team behind the new film “gets how important the first movie is to so many people, women in particular, and we want to honor that for sure.”

“There’s a joyousness to that movie, and there’s such beautiful themes of sisterhood and family and acceptance, tolerance, love,” Di Novi added. “Just the title that Alice Hoffman, the amazing author, thought of that’s now become part of the vernacular...

I Also Do This: How A Plunge Into Painting Saved Producer Denise Di Novi’s Life
Image
An occasional look at the surprising creative outlets of members of the Hollywood community.

Producer Denise Di Novi has been a fixture in Hollywood since she first arrived on the scene with Heathers, the pitch-black comedy that became one of the breakout hits at Sundance when that festival was establishing itself. She has followed with credits including Edward Scissorhands, Message In A Bottle, James and the Giant Peach, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Batman Returns, Little Women, Ed Wood and many others.

Di Novi will reveal another side of herself when she unveils Portal, an exhibit of her paintings beginning August 10 at the Honarker Foundation Gallery in Laguna Beach. The exhibition runs through September 14.

She is passionate about her art, though she cannot really describe her style, because she isn’t trained in the traditional manner. It is just something that bubbles up and comes out of her.

Catwoman Producer Has the Last Laugh 20 Years After Her 'Biggest Failure'
Image
Tempus edax rerum time, devourer of all things. "It is my feeling that time ripens all things; with time all things are revealed; time is the father of truth," Franois Rabelais is alleged to have said, and it's relative but true. Hindsight is well-equipped to be wiser than the present moment, and we often look back on the past and reevaluate things. Producer Denise Di Novi has been doing that with the 20th anniversary of what she tells us is "the biggest failure of [her] career," the Halle Berry movie, Catwoman. She recently spoke with MovieWeb about the film, shortly after discussing it in depth elsewhere.

"I did an interview with Entertainment Weekly about how it's incredibly popular now, and the ratings have gone up to like, 4.8 out of five, and it's one of the most downloaded movies," said Di Novi, who is no stranger to producing popular movies. She added:

Practical Magic 2 Update Gives Me Hope For The Sequel To Do Justice To The First Movie
Image
Practical Magic 2 will focus on essential themes like sisterhood, family, and self-acceptance. The sequel will adapt the book "The Book of Magic" and stay true to the original movie's essence. Practical Magic 2 must avoid relying solely on nostalgia to succeed.

Practical Magic 2 is officially in development, with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman confirmed to return, and a recent update gives me hope for it to do justice to the first movie. Along with the trends of reboots and remakes, the film industry has been producing many legacy and long-awaited sequels of movies that came out many years ago. Among the most recent additions to the list of sequels in development is Practical Magic 2, the continuation of Griffin Dunes 1998 romantic fantasy movie Practical Magic, based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman.

The 2004 movie, Catwoman was originally planned as a spin-off from Michelle Pfeiffer’s iconic role as Selina Kyle in Batman Returns but evolved into a new tale rather introduced the fans to a whole new character, after Pfeiffer’s departure.

Catwoman's Halle Berry Recalls Firestorm Surrounding Her Revealing Costume
Image
Catwoman continues to divide opinion 20 years after its release, with star Halle Berry bearing the brunt of its criticism. The Academy Award winner and a producer of the derided superhero film believe the furor surrounding the titular character's suit helped ignite the negativity.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Catwoman producer Denise Di Novi insisted that the backlash towards the movie began with Berry's revealing catsuit for the film, with an earlier version of the outfit leaking online and sparking fan outrage. "That was the first thing that started the negativity. It was an early shot before wed perfected it," she said. "A catsuit, by definition, everything is covered up. We thought itd be cool to be more rock & roll and bare. Halle was famous for wearing a bikini in her Bond movie, and we were like, why not? People had such a reaction to it, which is so ridiculous. Catwoman Star Halle Berry Recalls Fan Backlash To Her Revealing Costume: "It Was Better Suited For My Body"
Image
Catwoman starring Halle Berry is widely regarded as one of the worst comic book movies of all time, but the notorious 2004 flop had attracted its share of negativity before it even hit theaters - in part due to Berry's revealing costume.

All previous takes on Catwoman had donned a variation of a single-piece catsuit, while the outfit Patience Price wore in the movie exposed more skin and completely revamped the mask.

Apparently, an image of Berry sporting an earlier version of the suit leaked online, and fans of Batman's feline foe were not pleased.

"That was the first thing that started the negativity," producer Denise Di Novi tells EW. "It was an early shot before we’d perfected it. It was so different than what people were used to in the other movie. A catsuit, by definition, everything is covered up. We thought it’d be cool to be more rock & roll and bare.

Halle Berry in Catwoman (2004)
Catwoman | 20 years on, Halle Berry responds to its backlash
Halle Berry in Catwoman (2004)
“I hate that it got all put on me… that it’s my failure,” says Catwoman star Halle Berry, 20 years after the film’s calamitous release.

Readers with long memories may remember the derision that greeted the release of Catwoman in 2004. Directed by French filmmaker Pitof, it starred Halle Berry – then on a run of success, having won an Oscar for her work in Monster’s Ball – as new imagining of the titular superhero.

It was clear from the finished film that there were problems behind the scenes, and to mark its 20th anniversary, several of the main people involved in making it have spoken to Entertainment Weekly about its troubled production.

One obvious issue, going by producer Denise Di Novi and screenwriter John Brancato’s comments, is that the film went into production without a finished script. Di Novi and Brancato had initially thought of their Catwoman as a “lower-budget...

'That Experience Changed Me': Halle Berry Reflects on Catwoman Criticism 20 Years Later
Image
Catwoman premiered on July 19, 2004, starring Halle Berry in the leading role. The film was heavily criticized and now Berry addresses the film's poor reception while celebrating the film's 20th anniversary.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly alongside the film's director, Pitof, producer Denise Di Novi and writer John Brancato, Halle Berry opened up about the film's criticism. The movie was a huge box office disappointment, as it wasn't even able to win back its initial $100 million budget. At the end of its theatrical run, the film only made $82 million worldwide (via The Numbers). On top of that, the film was a major "winner" at the Golden Raspberry Awards, with Halle Berry herself receiving a nod, which she accepted in person while holding her Oscar (which she won for her role in 2001's Monster's Ball).

‘Catwoman’ Producer Says Production Endured ‘a Lot of Sexism’
Image
“Catwoman” producer Denise Di Novi is claiming studio Warner Bros. brought out some claws during the production of the infamous 2004 film.

Di Novi told Entertainment Weekly for the 20th anniversary of the critically panned superhero feature that the film shifted from being a “small, lower-budget origin story” to a “big superhero movie with a big star” due to Warner Bros.’ urging. However, the studio then saddled the production with plot notes that were riddled with “sexism,” according to the producer.

“It evolved into a bigger movie. It started off like a small, lower-budget origin story with this French director and a newer star. A couple of other movies fell through, and they were like, ‘We want this to be a big superhero movie with a big star,'” Di Novi said.

Of course, Halle Berry was cast in the lead role for the “Batman” spinoff, made more than a decade...

Practical Magic 2 Will Adapt Alice Hoffman's The Book of Magic Novel
Image
A sequel to the 1998 romantic fantasy film Practical Magic is currently in the works at Warner Bros. While very little plot information was released when the follow-up was announced, producer Denise Di Novi says that the movie will remain rooted in the source material.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Di Novi revealed that the plot will draw heavily from Alice Hoffman's 2021 novel, The Book of Magic. "I think [fans are] going to be very pleased.
