‘$la$her$’ Blu-ray Review: Terror Vision Unearths an Obscure 2001 Horror Movie With a Killer Premise
By late 2000, reality television was considered must-see entertainment by millions. Whether it was the drama and backstabbing tribal exploits of Survivor or Regis Philbin asking for the “final answer” on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, this boob tube subgenre was all the rage worldwide. Meanwhile, Japan has always been known for their off the wall, physically demanding gameshows like Takeshi’s Castle and Kunoichi.
Writer-director Maurice Devereaux (End of the Line) rode the wave of reality TV in an ocean of Japanese game show craziness on a surfboard crafted from The Running Man to bring the world $la$hers in 2001. And thanks to Terror Vision, who have been on a roll with their releases lately, we have a chance to revisit this Canadian direct-to-video flick. Despite how the title sounds, it is not supposed to be a straight-on horror film, but a satire in a horror film’s clothing, so to speak.

The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
The Collector
If the triumphant return of the Saw franchise has you in the mood for more trap-laden horrors, look no further than The Collector — which was originally conceived as a prequel to Saw that would show Jigsaw’s original story. When producers passed on the idea, writers Patrick Melton & Marcus Dunstan (Saw IV-vii) reworked it into an original script, which Dunstan directed in 2009.
A slasher/home invasion hybrid for the so-called “torture porn” era, The Collector stars Criminal Minds‘ Josh Stewart as struggling ex-con Arkin. A planned heist at his new employer’s home to repay a debt becomes deadly when he...

Terror Vision has quickly become one of my go-to labels for obscure horror titles, and they're getting a jump-start on the Halloween season with #13WeeksOfHalloween, offering an eclectic mix of new, rare, and cult releases on VHS, Blu-ray, 4K Uhd, LP, and cassette:

You may have seen recently that Joss Whedon “endorsed“ Mitt Romney for President saying, “You know, like a lot of liberal Americans, I was excited when Barack Obama took office four years ago. But it’s a very different world now. And Mitt Romney is a very different candidate. One with the vision and determination to cut through business-as-usual politics and finally put this country back on the path to the zombie apocalypse.”
Joss Whedon is absolutely right to invoke zombies in a political discussion, because zombies are the most political of monsters. Or to put it another way, Zombie films are the most political of all horror films.
…
…
…
Wait. What?
Let me explain.
Roger Ebert, in his review of Zombieland, wrote about Zombies:
Vampires make a certain amount of sense to me, but zombies not so much. What’s their purpose? Why do they always look so bad? Can...

2009. It was pretty much as crappy a year for horror movies as it was for the economy. There were, however, some really high points to help balance out all the drivel that was put out there in theatres as well as on home video, and they are to be celebrated, even though technically a couple of them are not even from this year.

What do we have this week? Let's see, the Cannes premierer Wendy and Lucy which everyone seemed to love but me. Then we have the release of Gô Ohara's Geisha Assassin (aka Geisha vs Ninjas). Most horror geeks know Brian Yuzna as a frequent Stuart Gordon collaborator who helped to bring us Re-Animator, From Beyond, and the underrated Dolls. Younger gene freaks would also know Mr. Y from his numerous Filmax productions, which include Dagon, Rottweiler, and (of course) Beyond Re-Animator. But now, according to Big V, Brian is about to deliver a trio of 3-D horror flicks. The first will be a giant monster movie called Amphibious, the second will be Brett Leonard's Necronauts, and the third will be Richard Stanley's Cold Blooded. Now, I call this news all sorts of interesting because A) Stanley doesn't direct many films, B) Leonard has never directed a good film, and C) they're all 3-D horror movies! With monsters!

Maurice Devereaux's apocalyptic horror film End of the Line played at Fantastic Fest in 2007, where it scored a Special Jury Prize for Innovative Vision. After a lengthy wait, the film has been released on Region 1 DVD by Anchor Bay Canada and Critical Mass Entertainment. Since this is a Canadian release, it is unlikely that U.S. fans will find it in a brick-and-mortars store. However, the 21st century makes that a weak excuse for not getting a copy because its available from Amazon Canada (http://tinyurl.com/eotl-amazon). Region 1 coding applies to both the U.S. and Canada so there is no need to fret about compatibility.

Maurice Devereaux’s 2006 apocalyptic horror film End of the Line exchanges familiar antagonists such as monsters, zombies, and serial killers with a different threat: crazed evangelical cultists. This new DVD release includes, among other extras, the question and answer session from the film’s 2006 screening at Fantasia Film Festival, an audio commentary, and a documentary about the making of the film. These extras are nice but the main attraction is Devereaux’s film, which puts a smart, topical spin on a familiar genre format.

Yes, the release date is no longer speculative: the DVD actually hit the street on October 14, 2008. This new release includes, among other extras, an audio commentary and a documentary about the making of the film. The theatrical trailer is featured beneath the fold. For some reason no one out there wants to give Maurice Devereaux what he needs in order to secure a U.S. release for his urban apocalypse horror film End of the Line (review). Speaking with Fangoria recently, howver, Deveraux did have good news for his home country of Canada; Anchor Bay Canada and Critical Mass Releasing have the disc set to street later this year.
“It’s not hard to make a deal,” Devereaux told the site ”tons of people want the movie, including many big-name distributors—but it’s increasingly hard to get a good deal, where you get a good minimum-guarantee amount upfront and then actually get some back-end royalties later. I’ve seen too many indie filmmakers who’ve never gotten a dime for all the work they did, so I’ve been extremely cautious. Luckily, Rob Herholz of Anchor Bay was such a fan of...

It was been a long, long time since we heard anything about Maurice Devereaux's indie horror-thriller End of the Line, and then all of a sudden we had a screener. Today we added Ryan Daley's review of the film. "Maurice Devereaux is a talented horror auteur who always manages to squeeze some rich moments of terror out of a miniscule budget, and with the arrival of End Of The Line, theres hope that hell continue to release quality movies into an oversaturated direct-to-dvd market."
