When "The Shield" premiered on FX in March 2002, it was entering a prestige-tv landscape that was still relatively young. "The Sopranos" had just begun its HBO run three years earlier, and AMC shows like "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" — with protagonists cut from the same antihero cloth as Tony Soprano — had not yet arrived on cable TV. And they might never have done so if "The Shield" hadn't paved the way first. Michael Chiklis won an Emmy Award for his portrayal of corrupt cop Vic Mackey in season 1 of "The Shield," but for series creator Shawn Ryan and company, it took some convincing to even get "The Shield" on the air, and there was a lot riding on its success.
In 2022, for the 20th anniversary of "The Shield," Entertainment Weekly dug into the background of the show with an oral history featuring Chiklis, Ryan, and other cast and crew members.

"So we're both lousy friends." Roadside Attractions has revealed an official trailer for an under-90-minutes dark comedy titled Moving On, the latest from filmmaker Paul Weitz. This actually premiered at TIFF 2022 last year, and recently played at the Palm Springs Film Festival, with a theatrical release set for March coming up next month. Two old friends reconnect at a funeral and decide to revenge on the widower who messed with them decades before. Along the way, each woman learns to make peace with the past and with each other. Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin star as the two old friends, along with Malcolm McDowell, Richard Roundtree, Catherine Dent, and Marcel Nahapetian. This does look like it has some funny scenes and sharp dialogue, though the rest of the cliched story doesn't seem that great. Still will be worth watching just for Fonda and Tomlin. // Continue Reading ›››...

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin have teamed up once again — this time for revenge — in the newly released Moving On trailer.
The preview, which dropped Wednesday (below), gives a first look at the two icons together in the new comedy. The film, written and directed by Paul Weitz, also stars Malcolm McDowell, Richard Roundtree, Catherine Dent and Eddie Martinez.
Fonda and Tomlin’s characters are estranged friends who reconnect at their best friend’s funeral to seek revenge on her widower, Howard (McDowell), who messed with them more than four decades prior. “Howard, I’m gonna kill you,” Fonda says to a taken aback McDowell in the trailer. “Now that she’s gone, I’m going to do it this weekend.”
The duo sketch out different plans to take down McDowell, including looking into guns and poison. “So, what’s the plan, Scarface?” Tomlin asks Fonda. At one point, Fonda...

Back in person for the first time since before the pandemic, the Toronto International Film Festival will make its grand return with a slate that builds on its expansion from previous years. The 2022 lineup boasts the world premieres of several high-profile films, including Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light,” Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and the Billy Eichner comedy “Bros.” However, there are a number of hot titles due to screen at the festival that have yet to be acquired. Documentaries by the likes of “Blackfish” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite and narrative features led by stars such as Margaret Qualley, Brian Cox and Tessa Thompson just may incite a bidding war. Here are 15 buzzy sales titles to watch.

Director Robert Benton and Paul Newman come through with an extremely pleasing small town story. Snowy North Bath New York would seem a pit of failures big and small, until we begin to appreciate its social web of ‘support relationships’ that fill in for broken family connections. Newman’s injured laborer can’t get a fair shake, but he begins to realize the importance of his neighbors and his grandson. The comic conflicts are wholly believable, with Jessica Tandy, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Philip Seymour Hoffman on board: this one is Mellow and Mature (and a little racy) without succumbing to Hallmark TV drama sentimentality.

As we inch ever closer to the April 27 release of Avengers: Infinity War, it appears that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is finally crossing over with the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe once more. In last week's episode of the ABC series, currently in its fifth (and possibly final) season, we learned that the villainous General Hale (Catherine Dent) was really the last vestigial element of Hydra, hoping to continue Daniel Whitehall's work and turn Daisy (Chloe Bennet) into the Destroyer of Worlds via the Particle Infusion Chamber while also hoping to team up with S.H.I.E.L.D. in asking the mysterious alien Confederacy for protection against the war coming to Earth. Well, that's one way to introduce yourself, Ruby Hale! A lot of stuff went down during Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s return tonight—and we do mean a lot—but nothing more important or shocking than the revelation that Dove Cameron's mysterious character is no regular teenage girl. In fact, she's some sort of highly-skilled weapon deployed by her shifty mother Gen. Hale (Catherine Dent) to capture our team of heroes just after they returned to present day—one who rocks a killer body suit and mask and knows her way around a chakram (those circular throwing blades she made quick use of). Oh, and she just happened to chop poor Yo-Yo's (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) arms off, thereby putting the dire...

Fear The Walking Dead is a familiar format to anyone who has seen the original series. A group of survivors go from place to place looking for somewhere to settle down for a little bit, avoiding dangers both undead and living in the process. However, where The Walking Dead dropped us right into the post-apocalypse, Fear The Walking Dead is taking things from a different perspective. We're not coming across groups of hardened survivors, we're dealing with people who may or may not be waiting for the military to come sweeping in with tanks and guns to wipe the rotters off the face of the earth and put humanity back on top of the food chain.

"Chronicle" and "Carrie" actor Alex Russell has scored the starring role in AMC and Scott Free's upcoming drama pilot "Galyntine".
The fantasy-action adventure series is set in a postapocalyptic future without technology where a band of survivors is forced to adapt to isolation and the challenges of their new world.
Russell plays Roman, an orphan who was unofficially adopted by his best friend Aethys’ family. He hopes to marry Aethys’ sister Essyn to make his membership in the family official.
A very public victory appears to cement his status as a future leader of the colony, but a twist of fate (and a betrayal) set him on a different, more dangerous path. Catherine Dent and Charlotte D'Ambroise also star.
David Mackenzie ("Starred Up," "Young Adam") will direct the pilot and executive produce alongside Greg Nicotero. Jason Cahill ("Halt and Catch Fire") penned the pilot.

Okay, I’m going to go out on a limb. I might be pathetically misguided, but I believe that this special film’s message (at least what I took away from it) is that everyone in life has issues, hidden problems that the outside world does not always comprehend or see. Communication can help people to understand, and even if folks attempt to avoid confrontations with strangers, new encounters can help in a variety of ways. Finding Neighbors demonstrates these ideas in a first-rate manner. It’s both intelligent and humane, but I’m not implying that the film is also dull as dishwater. While being entertained by this story’s slice of life, I was also re-educated about the importance of communication between people—how it can inspire and enliven everyone in a positive way. Most importantly, it does these things while being entertaining as well.

Ron Judkins is an Oscar-winning sound engineer. He has worked on over 50 films since 1976 including blockbusters for directors such as Steven Spielberg, Gus Van Sant, Paul Thomas Anderson, Richard Donner, and Barry Levinson. He won two Academy Awards for Best Sound for Jurassic Park and Saving Private Ryan. He made his directorial debut in 1999 with the film The Hi Line, which he also wrote. Now Ron Judkins is back in the director/writer chair for the new film Finding Neighbors, a comedic drama about three sets of Los Angeles neighbors who are searching for true connections.
Finding Neighbors is the story of a formerly acclaimed graphic novelist who goes looking for a true connection outside of his marriage – and just over his fence. Six months late on a book delivery, Sam (Michael O’Keefe) has succumbed to a full-on midlife and creative crisis. Sherrie (Julie Mond), the provocative girl-next-door, offers...

When was the last time you talked to your next door neighbor? With all of the crazy reports out there in the news today, it seems that we as human beings have become more closed off to the world. I recall having a realization that, after almost one-and-a-half years of living in my apartment, I had never introduced myself to (or even seen) the person next door. I'm sure I looked rather foolish making an introduction after so long, but it seemed so unusual to live right next door to someone and not know anything about them -- even their name. Writer/director Ron Judkins explores this exact topic in his latest film, Finding Neighbors.
Sam (Michael O'Keefe) is a graphic novel artist, famous for works he did many years ago. It appears that he's hit a lull in his career and is struggling to create anything for his latest...

Earlier this week, "Middle of Nowhere" director and African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement founder Ava DuVernay was the keynote speaker at the American Film Institute's Directing Workshop for Women. DuVernay, who won the U.S. dramatic directing award at last year's Sundance, gave brief remarks before viewing the work of the workshop's up-and-coming participants. Honored this year were Shaz Bennett, Catherine Dent, Antoneta Kastrati, Lauren Ludwig, Stephanie Martin, Juliana Penaradna-Loftus, Lisanne Sartor and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro. Below are DuVernay's remarks to her fellow women directors:i'm using one of my 5 allotted minutes to show you something that helps me. Some days I watch and I laugh. Some days I watch and I get a little misty. Depends on the day. So I thought to myself, why not me? Why not us? The question is fundamentally flawed in that it shouldn't be a viable question in the first place. It speaks to exclusion and heirachy and.

The other night, I found myself watching Ocean’s Thirteen for, to be conservative, the 11teenth time. I love heist films. Likewise, I embraced the likes of TV’s (short-lived) Thief and even (the short-lived) Smith. But TNT’s Leverage, arriving when it did, really took the baton from Danny Ocean, offering a small-screen version of that stylized spin on modern-day Robin Hoods, burglars with a cause.
I’d be lying if I said that Leverage never ebbed in quality. In fact, this past season’s Inception-like second episode I frankly couldn’t finish, it had veered so far from...

It's true that we here at JustPressPlay are more likely to shred a heartwarming piece of thoughtless family fluff to pieces instead of recommend it for the sake of its wholesome goodness, but we're critics and we expect a little something more. Brought to you by Tim Kring, the creator of the series Heroes, Kiefer Sutherland's newest show Touch is that something more. Equal parts Touched By an Angel, Pay it Forward, and Numbers, Touch is the story of a father and his emotionally distant son who has the ability to read into the mathematical connections binding people together and shed light on the ways they can be helped. It's family-friendly television that's also well-written and which features an excellent cast beyond Sutherland like Danny Glover, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Maria Bello, Catherine Dent, and David Mazouz.

With filming now underway on the latest season of the hit CBS procedural ‘The Mentalist’, I have decided to take a quick look at a few of the reasons to get excited for the September premiere. I could ramble all day long on just why the show as a whole is great, so I have limited myself to just five (of many) reasons to be excited, most of which are specific or new to the coming season.
Enjoy.
1. Red John Information Is Coming
Red John Is still standing tall as The Mentalist’s central mystery after once again out smarting Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) in the Season 4 finale ‘The Crimson Hat’ (read my review here). The enigma of this serial killer and Patrick Jane’s quest to take him down has always been one of the most compelling plot lines in the shows armoury; it’s certainly the most important.
Enjoy.

To say that things have been going down-hill for Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) is probably the understatement of the season. And while Red John saturated episode are usually the more intriguing ones of the season, this one didn’t deliver anything new. Well, Jane *does* get to finally have a sex life, so I guess that’s new. But everything else went so predictably, I’m starting to pray they wrap up the Rd John story line very soon. This show doesn’t do time jumps often, but it has apparently been 6 months since Jane got fired from the Cbi. Now he’s had 6 months to drink, con and basically go back to his Lord of Lies ways. Lisbon (Robin Tunney) and the others haven’t seen nor heard from him, but apparently they also can’t solve too many cases without him either. I was so hoping that they...

Wow. I said last week to expect little fun and a ton of intensity in these last two episodes – and I wasn’t wrong. Now I usually break down the case and then discuss the themes or ongoing plots seperately, but this weeks case was so in tune with Jane’s breakdown that I’m just going to go ahead and dive right in.
Red John leaves Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) a note that reads ‘Happy Anniversary’ – creepy. Red John manipulates a young girl into giving Jane a message – extra creepy. “Do you give up yet?” she says, Red John smiley drawn on her hand. This being a young girl not unlike his late daughter (which I’m sure was Rj’s intention) Jane takes it upon himself to hypnotise her, making her forget about the ordeal with Red John. Cbi Boss Luther Wainwright (Michael Rady...

In "Noosphere Rising," "Touch" takes a rough turn. After the death of Teller (Danny Glover) last week, things are getting even more complicated. Jake's (David Mazouz) aunt Abagail Kelsey (Catherine Dent) has filed for full custody after hearing that Martin (Kiefer Sutherland) didn't show for the evaluation.
Jake is trying to show Martin and Clea (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) patterns through a poker hand called "Dead Man's Hand," as well as giving them Teller's key. Will they have the time to do this before Abagail gets her hands on him?
Check out the video clips below and give us your predictions for the episode. Sutherland is just knocking this show out of the park. "Touch" airs Thursday night on Fox.

“Touch” reached a turning point in its first season last Thursday night, as one character — Arthur Teller (Danny Glover) — was lost, and another — Clea Hopkins (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) — found herself more invested than ever in finding out more about the strange goings-on that now surround her.
So this coming Thursday’s episode promises to be an interesting one, as the mystery surrounding Jake Bohm’s (David Mazouz) abilities and Teller’s death deepens even further.
Compounding the drama is Jake’s aunt (Catherine Dent), who initiates a custody battle to try and pry Jake away from his father, Martin Bohm (Kiefer Sutherland).
Fox All Access caught up with Sutherland and Mbatha-Raw at a “Touch” red carpet event in Hollywood this week, and producer Jeff Axelrod spoke to the stars about the new shifts in the series’ storyline.
All-new episodes of “Touch” air Thursday nights at 9/8c on Fox.
