Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn gives jam as swathe of film and TV celebrities add support, including Zone of Interest’s Jonathan Glazer and Thor’s Tessa Thompson
A host of film directors and stars, including Susan Sarandon, Paul Mescal and Olivia Colman, have added their names to those offering time and memorabilia to a Cinema for Gaza auction that is raising funds for humanitarian relief in Palestine.
Joining the celebrities is the former Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn – billed as the star of Sumotherhood, thanks to his cameo in last year’s Adam Deacon urban thriller – who is donating a Zoom poetry reading and a selection of homemade jam.

Hit British comedy Sumotherhood is coming to DVD and Blu-ray in February. More details on the release here.
For his return to directing after over a decade, Adam Deacon brought to the screen the comedy Sumotherhood last autumn. Deacon directed the film, took the lead role, and co-wrote the movie too, which built on the success of Anuvahood back in 2011.
The new movie attracted a whole bunch of cameos that I don’t want to spoil here (although the promotion for the movie sort of did!), and there’s a bank robbery sequence in the midst of the film that just keeps building and building as more faces appear.
Paramount Pictures backed the picture in the UK, and it enjoyed modest success at the box office too. Now, the film is also getting a physical media release, with Paramount set to issue Sumotherhood on DVD and Blu-ray on February 26th 2024.

Adam Deacon’s star-stuffed parody arrives on digital platforms next week ahead of a boxing day rental release.
The latest film from BAFTA-winner Adam Deacon will be available to download and keep on digital platforms from the 12th December, before becoming rent-able (presumably from those same ‘digital platforms’) from the 26th December.
We’ve not managed to catch this one yet, but the synopsis (and a stacked cast list) have our curiosity piqued. Here is that very same synopsis:
In this parody of the UK urban genre Riko and Kane have got it all … big dreams, no respect and a fifteen grand debt. Could things get any worse?
Yes! So, it’s time to man up and finally be taken seriously as “Roadmen”. Once putting their heads together on various ways to make some money, they decide to rob a megastar in a nightclub toilet and hold up the local bank,...

It felt somewhat fitting that we sat down with filmmakers, and friends, Adam Deacon and Jazzie Zonzolo, on World Mental Health Day, for their latest film, Sumotherhood, undercuts the overstated comedy and criminality, with some profound messages about reaching out.
Deacon, who has spoken out about his own issues in the past, talks to the importance of injecting conversations of this nature into his feature, while both he and Zonzolo speak about their friendship and how they came to know and work with one another. They also talk about the cameos in the film, in how they got Ed Sheeran to, well, poo in a bush – and even more surprising: how they got Jeremy Corbyn to say ‘wasteman’.

Semi-sequel to the spoof gangland tale muddles comic capers with extreme violence and it’s not helped by a cameo from ‘Crack Ed’ Sheeran
When Adam Deacon sent up the turgid inner-city dramas Kidulthood and Adulthood with his 2011 comedy Anuvahood, he was dissing the hand that fed him: Deacon was one of the stars of the earlier Noel Clarke-penned films, which made it all the more frustrating that none of his barbs hit their target. Twenty-five years on from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels the British gangster revival is still going strong. Case in point Hitmen, the new film from writer/director Savvas D. Michael who has already made several contributions to the genre including The Bezonians, Smoking Guns and Original Gangster.
Luke and Lauren are having marital issues. But that doesn’t mean she’s thrilled when Jackie starts hitting on her and when she mocks him, hitting her. This leads to a beating which in turn leads to Jackie’s death.
That would be bad enough, but Jackie’s grandfather Michael is a wealthy CEO with some rather shady connections. When they’re acquitted by reason of self-defense he puts a million-dollar contract on the couple.

Noel Clarke has apparently dropped his claims against BAFTA, Conde Nast and the Guardian writers who reported at least 20 allegations of harassment and bullying against the actor and director.
Last May journalists Sirin Kale and Lucy Osborne published a long piece in which they detailed numerous allegations against Clarke. It was published just weeks after Clarke collected a BAFTA award for outstanding British contribution to cinema.
The fall-out was swift and wide, with the award and his BAFTA membership suspended, while ITV pulled the season finale of primetime drama “Viewpoint,” in which Clarke was starring at the time.
In April of this year, exactly 12 months after the article was published, Clarke filed a claim for defamation at the High Court in London. He listed 12 defendants including BAFTA, the Guardian, Kale and Osbourne as well as one of his accusers, Jahannah James, who claimed he had secretly filmed her naked.

When a friend told director, writer and actor Missy Malek about a real-life group of disabled drug dealers operating in London, Malek instantly knew she had the makings of a film.
“The second I heard it, I was like, ‘Yes, yes, amazing. Done,” she says. “I know this word is so overused, but it is empowering, the concept of disabled gangsters. Every portrayal of disabled people is always so patronising in the media. And this was the first time a story about disabled people had been put to me that wasn’t patronising.”
The result is “We’re Too Good For This,” a 12-minute short reminiscent of Joe Cornish’s “Attack the Block,” which premieres at the BFI London Film Festival on Saturday. It tells the story of four young people – Scott (Keron Day), Fatima (Asnath Iosala), Anthony (Asa Hems) and Julian (Jayden Reid) – who take revenge on a vindictive...

Adam Deacon, the BAFTA-winning star of British indie dramas “Kidulthood” and “Adulthood,” will take on his next directorial project with “Sumotherhood.”
Billed as an urban action comedy, the film sees Deacon reteaming with Michael Vu, with whom he collaborated on the 2011 film “Anuvahood” — his first turn in the director’s seat. Joining them for the new project is writing partner and comedy performer Jazzie Zonzolo.
“Sumotherhood” marks Deacon’s return to the industry after a number of years away. The British actor-rapper broke through in the 2006 drama “Kidulthood,” and went on to win BAFTA’s highly coveted Rising Star award in 2012, beating the likes of Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hiddleston. Early in his career, Deacon collaborated on several projects with actor-director Noel Clarke — who was recently subject to multiple sexual misconduct and bullying claims, all of which he denies — but went on to accuse Clarke of bullying and sabotaging his...

A letter calling for a shakeup in the culture of the UK film and TV industry, penned in response to the accusations made against actor and producer Noel Clarke last week, has attracted more than 800 signatures at the time of writing.
The letter has been penned by Meriel Beale, a freelance producer, anti-bullying campaigner and harassment officer at Bectu.
The text responds to the allegations against Clarke – which come from 20+ women and range from sending unsolicited explicit images to filming a nude audition without consent – by questioning how such actions have become normalized and even accepted widely in the UK biz.
Clarke has denied the accusations of sexual misconducts but has also said he will seek “professional help”. At the weekend, it was confirmed by BBC News that a complaint had been made to Met police of alleged sexual offences against a man understood to be Clarke.

"Baby, let's go kill some sinners." Saints & Sinners + Strike Media has released this new official trailer for a gritty British thriller titled Red Rage, formerly known as Red Devil. Despite the title seemingly being a wink to hating Russians ("those red devils!") it's really a reference to the designer drug called "Red Devil", which is ruining the city. A murderous vigilante couple tear through the town, serving vengeance to dealers of the drug. "An intertwining tale of sex, drugs, rock and woe," is how they sell it. Red Rage stars Fernanda Diniz, Jack Turner, Adam Deacon, Steven Berkoff, Ian Reddington, and Vas Blackwood. This looks like it has way more weed in it than any other drug, but I dig the style and the craziness of it. Not that we haven't seen this so many times before; it's almost like Trainspotting crossed with The Boondock Saints. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Savvas D.

"What's the point in having talent if you keep it for yourself." Conduit Presents has released an official US trailer for a film titled The Break, also known as just Break when it was first released in the UK last year. But is it too late? He'll only succeed if he can break away from his biggest problem: himself. The Break stars Sam Gittins, Rutger Hauer, Jamie Foreman, David Yip, Adam Deacon, and Luke Mably. This is a very strange trailer, but perhaps there's something worthwhile in this. Not often we get billiards films anymore. I have been saying for a while now that the British independent film scene is ablaze with a plethora of talent… A veritable smorgasbord of directors, actors, DOPs, writers and producers are currently cutting their teeth out there as streaming and VOD make it way more accessible for us as viewers to find these works. Which has meant the creators are finding smarter ways of utilizing what they have at their disposal and how to make a small budget movie look like it belongs on the cinema wall along side whatever multi-hundred million dollar blockbuster is currently showing and you know whats happening? They are proving that they have way more style and so much more substance. It’s a damn good time to be a fan of British indie cinema.
I have been saying for a while now that the British independent film scene is ablaze with a plethora of talent… A veritable smorgasbord of directors, actors, DOPs, writers and producers are currently cutting their teeth out there as streaming and VOD make it way more accessible for us as viewers to find these works. "Some lions go rogue... She likes to kill." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for an action movie titled Rogue, the latest from director M.J. Bassett. Megan Fox stars in this "explosive action saga" as a battle-hardened mercenary. As team leader O'Hara, she leads a lively squad of soldiers on a daring mission: rescue a hostage from captors in a remote region of Africa. But when the mission goes awry and the team is stranded, O'Hara's squad must face a bloody, brutal encounter with a gang of rebels — and the horde of ravenous, enraged lions they encounter at a seemingly abandoned farm. Can they survive attacks from rebels and lions? This also stars Philip Winchester, Calli Taylor, Jessica Sutton, Lee-Anne Liebenberg, Brandon Auret, Adam Deacon, and Sisanda Henna. This looks especially bland and bad. As hard as she tries, Megan Fox just can't act - even opposite the CGI lions.

Most BAFTA categories are decided by the British film academy, but the Rising Star Award is voted on by members of the public. So who will win this year’s audience-voted prize? Awkwafina is the front-runner according to the consensus predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users, but can the American actress, comedian and rapper really prevail? She would be the first American winner in 10 years and only the third ever to claim this prize.

The only American winners since the Rising Star Award was first given out in 2006 were Shia Labeouf (2008) and Kristen Stewart (2010). Besides them, one French actress won (Eva Green in 2007). When rapper Stormzy landed a headlining slot at the Glastonbury Festival last summer, black British music took center stage and set the cultural agenda in the U.K. The film and television industries haven’t had many of those defining moments — and there was outrage as BAFTA recently unveiled an all-white acting nominations list for its 2020 film awards. But with a slew of major projects featuring diverse talent, there are hopes that change is afoot.
Movies such as Gurinder Chadha’s “Blinded by the Light,” about a British Pakistani teenager’s love of Bruce Springsteen, and Rapman’s “Blue Story,” a tale of friendship amid gang conflict, are registering critical acclaim and commercial success at the cinema. Series like “Top Boy” are winning eyeballs. Diverse rising talent is breaking through — and helping ensure that what appears on screen better reflects modern, multicultural Britain to audiences at home and around the world.
