Legendary actress Jacqueline Bisset, actor/director Jack Huston and songwriter Diane Warren, who is heading into the Oscars on March 2 as an Oscar nominee for the 16th time, will be guests of honor at the opening ceremony of the 20th Los Angeles, Italia Film, Fashion and Art Festival on Sunday, Feb. 23, fest organizers announced on Saturday.

The ceremony, which will take place at the Tcl Chinese Theatres in Hollywood, will also celebrate Sergio Castellitto, to whom the fest will also be dedicating a retrospective; Pupi Avati and Antonio Avati; and Marco Belardi. It will be followed by a special screening of Roberto Rossellini’s 1954 film Journey to Italy, starring Ingrid Bergman, in honor of Rossellini and Bergman’s daughter Isabella Rossellini, who, for her supporting performance in Conclave, is nominated for an Oscar for the first time.

The rest of the fest will include more than 120 screenings — among them 30 U.

“Conclave” director Edward Berger and the Oscar-nominated film’s Italian stars Isabella Rossellini and Sergio Castellitto will be celebrated by the Los Angeles-Italia Film Fashion and Art Festival, which will run Feb 23 to March 1 at Hollywood’s Tcl Chinese Theater.

Berger, whose Vatican thriller just scored four BAFTA wins, will be feted with a best director of 2025 prize by the annual pre-Oscars event, which celebrates showbiz ties between Italy and Hollywood.

Los Angeles-Italia chief Pascal Vicedomini praised Berger for “the sensitivity he showed in imagining a behind-the-scenes look at the Vatican,” he said in a statement.

The German director will receive his Los-Angeles-Italia award from Castellitto, who plays ruthless Italian Cardinal Goffredo Tedesco in “Conclave.” Berger, in turn, will present an award to Castellitto during a ceremony at the Chinese Theatre on Monday.

Director Denis Villeneuve has had a lot of success with his recent Dune movies, which stars Timothée Chalamet as lead charater Paul Atreides. But Villeneuve wasn't the first person to tackle this story. David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation of Dune is a cinematic anomaly that has long intrigued fans and critics alike, myself included. Known for its sprawling deserts, massive sandworms, and bizarre imagery such as Guild Navigators floating in spice-induced fog, the film stands as a polarizing entry in Lynch's filmography when compared to entries such as Blue Velvet or even Twin Peaks.

Despite its status as a commercial and critical failure, the 1984 Dune movie has garnered a cult following over the years. Now, film writer Max Evry’s book, A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune – An Oral History, offers a detailed exploration of this eccentric project, repositioning the film within the broader landscape of science fiction cinema.

David Lynch has expressed his latest regret for not negotiating a “final say” over 1984’s Dune. During an appearance on NPR’s Wild Card with Rachel Martin, the filmmaker said he “died a death” over how the movie turned out.

Lynch’s comment was in response to a question about which failure he’s learned the most from. “I knew already one should have final cut before signing on to do a film [like Dune],” he said. “But for some reason, I thought everything would be Ok, and I didn’t put final cut in my contract. And as it turned out, Dune wasn’t the film I wanted to make, because I didn’t have a final say.”

He continued, “So that’s a lesson I knew even before, but now there’s no way. Why would anyone work for three years on something that wasn’t yours? Why? Why do that?...

Netflix is continuing to roll out its celebration of iconic films, this time turning the page to 1984.

As part of the streaming platform’s “Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection,” Netflix has unveiled the 1984 films celebrating their 40-year anniversary in 2024 with classics like “Footloose” and “Sixteen Candles” alongside Oscar contenders “Amadeus” and “Iceman.”

The Milestone Movies hail from Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, and Sony — the distributors that license content to Netflix.

The fractured, de-Lynched storyline can be argued over, but the amazing design and arresting characterizations never fail to impress — Lynch attracted a world-class cast of movie stars and used them well. Even if it’s described as a hundred fragmented scenes from a larger narrative, they’re superlative fragments. Lynch should have been authorized to make an alternate cut, his own completely personal ‘impressionist’ version of the Frank Herbert story.

Exclusive: Fortitude International to launch sales in Cannes.

Fortitude International will introduce international buyers in Cannes to The Medusa starring Jesse Eisenberg, Pierce Brosnan and Vanessa Redgrave.

Peter Webber will direct his second film based on a renowned work of art after 2003’s Girl With A Pearl Earring, named after the painting by 17th century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer.

The Medusa stars Eisenberg as Theodore Gericault, the early 19th century pioneer of the French Romantic movement whose masterpiece The Raft Of The Medusa was inspired by the sinking of a French frigate.

Survivors of the wreck spoke of incompetence and cannibalism and the painting stirred anti-royalist sentiment at the time of King Louis Xviii’s rule.

Brosnan will portray Gericault’s uncle Caruel, the artist’s nemesis who is hell-bent on ruining him, while Redgrave plays the painter’s anti-royalist innkeeper.

It's the age old tug-of-war between art and commerce: movie studios want products they can sell, but they don't want them to look like something off a production line. They want movies that look and feel different, but not so different that audiences are too bewildered to buy a cinema ticket. In interviews, studio bosses and producers often talk about a filmmaker's "unique vision", and they often sound sincere while doing so. Yet the reality of spending huge sums on mainstream movies generally means that studios will often wind up feeling nervous when the cold reality of that vision becomes apparent.

Paris-based Snd has boarded Tommy Wirkola’s upcoming high-concept sci-fi action film What Happened to Monday?, starring Noomi Rapace and Glenn Close.

The previously announced project, which has been in development for some time, is produced by Vendome Pictures and Raffaella Production and fully financed by Snd, which will handle French distribution rights as well as international sales.

The partners announced on Wednesday (May 6) that the production is due to shoot in Bucharest late July.

“Working with Vendôme pictures and Raffaella productions to produce this project with us is a thrill. They have found and polished a gem of a story we are excited to bring to the screen. "There are more unmade movies than there are made movies," says Frank Pavich, director of Jodorowsky's Dune, the documentary chronicling director Alejandro Jodorowsky's efforts to adapt Frank Herbert's seminal science fiction novel for the big screen. His effort began almost a decade before the generally unsatisfying David Lynch version hit theatres in 1984.

Back in the mid 70s, widely credited as the creator of the Midnight Film genre with the release of El Topo (which caused a riot during its viewing at a film festival in Mexico), and fresh from the success of The Holy Mountain, Jodorowsky was given his choice of subject for his next movie. He elected to adapt Dune, even though he had never even read the book.

Noomi Rapace and director Tommy Wirkola have joined the languishing sci-fi thriller What Happened to Monday? for Vendome Pictures.

We first reported on this project back in December 2011, when Norwegian director Morten Tyldum (Headhunters) was attached to make his English-language debut, although he is no long involved. The story is set in an overpopulated world where each family is only allowed one child. Noomi Rapace is actually playing seven different roles as identical septuplet sisters, who try to remain hidden from the government. The lead role/roles were initially envisioned as seven brothers before Noomi Rapace came onboard.

Here's what Tommy Wirkola had to say about his leading lady.

Rapace will play the multiple roles of septuplet sisters who struggle to stay hidden in an overpopulated world were a one-child policy outlaws siblings. Wirkola said he originally envisioned the protagonist(s) as male, but “I was struck by the complexities of having an actor portray seven characters and immediately knew Noomi was the ideal actor – male or female – to bring them to life,” Wirkola said in a statement. That puts the breakout star of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo in the rare company of female talent like Angelina Jolie, who succeeded Tom Cruise as the star of Salt. Raffaella De Laurentiis is producing through Raffaella Productions, along with Vendome’s Philippe Rousselet. Vendome is also financing the film.

Barry Levinson is set to direct a currently untitled WW2 romantic drama for Shanghai Film Group.

Set in Leningrad and Shanghai across four decades, the story is loosely based on Chinese author Bei La's novel "The Cursed Piano". Ronald Harwood ("The Pianist") is adapting the script.

Mike Medavoy, Raffaella De Laurentiis and Edward McGurn are producing. Shooting begins in Shanghai in February.

A related six-hour television miniseries is also in the works.

Personally I’d rather see a MacGruber sequel, but what do I know?

At any rate, New line is moving forward with a film version of the 80s TV show MacGyver and they’re in talks with James Wan to direct. Wan is mostly know for horror films such as Saw and Insidious and doesn’t seem an obvious choice to helm an action film, but sometimes those are the best choices.

The plot of the film is unknown, but one can assume, like the TV show, the MacGyver film will follow the title character as he fights bad guys using nothing but his wits and whichever stray objects he comes across.

The script was written by Jason Richman with a rewrite by Brian and Mark Gunn. Martha and Raffaella De Laurentiis are producing along with Lee David Zlotoff.

That's right, everyone's favorite mullet rocking government agent will be getting the movie treatment - probably minus the mullet this time around. Richard Dean Anderson played the character in the '80s tv series which ran for seven seasons. A member of a fictional government agency known as the Phoenix Foundation, MacGyver was famous for cobbling together makeshift weaponry from various mundane household objects. According to Variety New Line were suitably impressed by James Wan's most recent feature The Conjuring to offer him the gig. No plot details are known from Jason Richman's script yet, but it was recently recently worked over by Brian and Mark Gunn. Martha and Raffaella De Laurentiis are producing through their Dino De Laurentiis Company shingle along with Lee David Zlotoff.

James Wan (Saw, Insidious) is stepping out of the horror genre, entering negotiations to direct MacGyver for Warner Bros.

We first reported on the project back in May 2010, when the studio hired Jason Richman (Bangkok Dangerous, Swing Vote) to write the screenplay. Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island) have provided the most recent script revisions.

The original MacGyver TV series, which ran from 1985 to 1992, starred Richard Dean Anderson as the title character, a secret agent working for The Phoenix Foundation. Although he never carried a gun, MacGyver used his innate technical know-how to defeat the bad guys with a variety of weapons he builds himself. It isn't known if Richard Dean Anderson will be involved in this theatrical remake.

Martha De Laurentiis and Raffaella De Laurentiis are producing alongside Lee David Zlotoff. No production schedule was given.

Coming off his thriller Headhunters — which premiered at Tiff this past September — Morten Tyldum is currently prepping his latest project, which Variety says is an American feature for Vendome Pictures What Happened to Monday?

Max Botkin has written the script, with Raffaella De Laurentiis serving as producer alongside Vendome CEO Philippe Rousselet. The script “follows identical septuplet brothers who struggle to stay hidden in an overpopulated world where a one-child policy outlaws siblings.” With Monday being his first U.S. feature, there’s a good chance that Tyldum will be able to show off his directing style for an audience unfamiliar with his work.

Norwegian director Morten Tyldum made an impression on the festival circuit this year with his twisty adaptation of Headhunters, after it broke box office records back home in Norway.  The film attracted attention from Hollywood, first manifested in the English-language adaptation of Headhunters set up at Summit.  Today it was announced that Tyldum has signed a deal with Vendome Pictures to make his first American feature, What Happened to Monday?.  The script by Max Botkin centers on "identical septuplet brothers who struggle to stay hidden in an overpopulated world where a 'one child' policy dictates that siblings are against the law."  Cool idea.  I presume they'll cast one actor as the septuplets, which should allow Tyldum to creative with filmmaking sleight of hand. Raffaella De Laurentiis (The Forbidden Kingdom) developed the project through his Raffaella Productions, and will produce alongside Vendrome CEO Philippe Rousselet (Source Code).  Magnolia will release Tyldum's Headhunters in the U.

Hollywood’s Black List was once an career-ending thing to be on, back in the 1950s’ Commie witch-hunt era. But Hollywood’s current Black List is actually a career builder, since this one refers to the annual compilation of the best unproduced original screenplays.

One such movie is now a step closer to being made.

Juno and Lars and the Real Girl were among those on previous lists, and one well-regarded title from the 2010 group was What Happened to Monday?, a sci-fi thriller about a group of adult, identical septuplets who are trying to stay hidden in a time when having multiple children is outlawed.

Although his last few directorial projects have been mediocre at best, Chris Columbus continues to be a force for cool family entertainment in Hollywood. Recently he helped shepherd a deal at MGM that finds them landing the rights to Killer Pizza, a script written by Adam Green (Hatchet, Frozen) based on the young adult book by Greg Taylor. The story is said to have a Gremlins and Goonies-type vibe, and Chris Columbus should know -- after all, he wrote the original screenplays for both of those films. MGM has acquired Adam Green's screenplay Killer Pizza for Raffaella De Laurentiis to produce. We first reported on this project back in May of 2010.

The story, adapted from Greg Taylor's novel, follows a 14-year-old boy who lands a summer job at a pizzeria dubbed Killer Pizza. The teenager soon discovers that the pizza place is actually a front for a monster-hunting organization. Chris Columbus brought the project to MGM, which had been looking for a movie similar to Gremlins and The Goonies.

Daughter Raffaella De Laurentiis said her 91-year-old father, producer of Serpico and Barbarella, was surrounded by family when he died last night at his home in Beverly Hills. De Laurentiis was regarded as a legend of Italian New Wave film-making.

Dino De Laurentiis, the Oscar-winning producer of "Serpico," "Death Wish" and "Red Dragon," has died. He was 91.

The producer, who moved to the United States in the 1970s and continued to produce films until 2007, died Wednesday night at his Beverly Hills home, his daughter Raffaella De Laurentiis, said in a statement to the L.A. Times. The exact cause was not released.

He began his career in Italy working with Roberto Rossellini and Federico Fellini, winning an Oscar for producing the latter's 1954 film La Strada. After moving to the Us in the 1970s, he oversaw films such as Serpico, Death Wish and the 1976 remake of King Kong. Cologne, Germany -- Veteran director Margarethe von Trotta returns to her perennial theme of strong woman with her new project, a biopic of Jewish philosopher and political theorist Hannah Arendt. Producers Heimatfilm picked up €750,000 ($920,000) in production financing from regional subsidy body Film Board NRW on Tuesday.

Von Trotta co-wrote the script to "Hannah Arendt" with Pam Katz. The film focuses on Arendt's reporting for The New Yorker on the war crimes trial of the Nazi Adolf Eichmann. In it, she coined the phrase "the banality of evil." "Hannah Arendt" will shoot in Israel and in North-Rhine Westphalia in Germany. Heat Vision is reporting that Chris Columbus' 1492 Pictures and South Korean media company Cj Entertainment are coming on board to help produce an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Newberry Medal-winning young-adult novel "The Graveyard Book."

The book centers on a young boy raised in a graveyard and educated by ghosts.

Neil Jordan is writing the script and will direct the live-action movie.

The project has seen its financing come and go but is back from the dead thanks to 1492 and Cj's involvement. Cj also will co-finance "Graveyard" and distribute the pic in Korea and Japan.
