ITV has officially announced its drama about the U.K.’s phone-hacking scandal and investigation, a seven-part series now entitled “The Hack” and written by multi award-winner Jack Thorne.
The unveiling of the first look from “The Hack” — which shot last year — comes just a week after the hacking controversy concerning Rupert Murdoch’s U.K. tabloids reached a new peak, with his News Group Newspapers making a historic apology to Prince Harry and agreeing to pay substantial damages.
David Tennant — who himself accepted damages from Ngn over a phone-hacking claim against the now-defunct News of the World — plays Nick Davies, the investigative journalist who uncovered evidence of hacking. Toby Jones plays his former editor-in-chief at The Guardian newspaper, Alan Rusbridger, while — in a story running parallel to the hacking expose — Robert Carlyle plays former Met Police detective chief superintendent Dave Cook, who led an investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan.

Exclusive: The timing couldn’t be better. Just a week after Rupert Murdoch’s shock apology and settlement with Prince Harry, ITV has unveiled a phone hacking drama series from Jack Thorne starring David Tennant as investigative journalist Nick Davies.
ITV and Australian streamer Stan have spent the past year quietly filming, editing and laying the groundwork for The Hack, which comes from the storied creative trio of multi-bafta Award winner Thorne, director Lewis Arnold (Sherwood) and producer Patrick Spence (Mr Bates vs the Post Office).
Set between 2002 and 2012, The Hack interweaves two real life stories, the work of Davies, who uncovered evidence of phone hacking at Murdoch’s now-defunct News of the World, and the story of the investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, led by former Met Police Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook. Its working titles through the past year have included Broken News and Mandrake.

Mike Leigh, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the greatest English filmmakers of all time. He has written, in his own way, and directed, films for screens both big and small, which have been massively acclaimed and influential, for more than a half-century. Among them: 1976’s Nuts in May, 1977’s Abigail’s Party, 1980’s Grown-Ups, 1983’s Meantime, 1993’s Naked, 1996’s Secrets & Lies, 2004’s Vera Drake, 2008’s Happy-Go-Lucky and, most recently, 2024’s Hard Truths.
Leigh’s films have won the top prizes of both the Cannes and Venice film festivals, something no other Brit has ever been able to claim. He personally was awarded an OBE in 1993, BAFTA’s Michael Balcon lifetime achievement award in 1996 and a BAFTA fellowship in 2014. And he has been nominated for seven Oscars.
The British Film Institute has called Leigh “the great humanist of British cinema.

When it comes to holiday classics, there are few films that capture the zeitgeist and delight of the season better than White Christmas. Its lighthearted whimsy and timeless Irving Berlin music has made it a picture that transcends generations. But it may very well be its cast of characters that help the movie stand out as the holiday crème de la crème. Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye are undoubtedly one of the screen’s best pairings as Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, and, of course, the movie would be nothing without Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen as sisters, Betty and Judy Haynes. Often considered one of the best on-screen siblings of all time, the two are still a delight to watch throughout the various musical numbers. However, their perfect pairing was the result of very different styles.

The song that sparked a thousand dreams — “White Christmas” — is a holiday classic for a reason. The 1954 film follows two former soldiers turned entertainers. Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Phil Davis (Danny Kaye) join a talent sister act, Betty (Rosemary Clooney) and Judy Haynes (Vera-Ellen), to perform a Christmas show in upstate Vermont. The foursome reunite with the boys’ former General to save his holiday inn.

Crafting the perfect TV family can be tricky. Most thrive off dysfunction — everything from “Arrested Development” to its genre-bent counterpart “Succession” — while many focus instead on found family among friends, coworkers, or community. At least one on-air drama is about the perils of inbreeding and bad communication between loved ones, so we wouldn’t exactly call it a family show.
In classic sitcoms starting with “Leave it to Beaver,” there was the idea of the model family (passed down so overtly as to inspire a “Boy Meets World” episode literally called “Model Family” that explicitly sites the Cleavers). From “Family Ties” to “Full House” to “Sister Sister,” the nuclear family was the beating heart of a TV show, with a kind of wholesome chemistry and dynamic that sometimes feels lost now.
But like every TV genre, the family comedy is alive, thriving, and evolving — perhaps nowhere as brilliantly as Apple’s “Trying,...

Apple TV's Trying is a heartwarming series following Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) as they try to grow their family. After fertility issues, the couple turns to adoption to fulfill their dream of being parents, but to get their family, they must juggle the various obstacles that arise. Fortunately, they have the constant support of their families and friends. Showing off the lives of well-meaning people who just don't have everything together, the series creates fascinating characters to populate Nikki and Jason's lives, from Nikki's overconfident coworker Jen (Robyn Cara) to Jason's quiet but caring father Vic (Phil Davis). However, one of the quirkiest examples is constantly overlooked. Nikki's brother-in-law, Scott Filburt (Darren Boyd), is unjustly the butt of every joke.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has confirmed that Matthew Perry will be honored at its TV awards later this year following backlash over his omission from the film awards’ In Memoriam segment on Sunday evening.
Although Perry, who died last October, was best known for his 10-year stint as Chandler Bing on hit TV show “Friends,” he also appeared in a number of popular feature films in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including “The Whole Nine Yards” alongside Bruce Willis and “Fools Rush In” opposite Salma Hayek.
This year’s In Memoriam segment, set to a special arrangement of Cyndi Lauper’s “The After Time” performed by “Ted Lasso” star Hannah Waddingham, featured Jane Birkin, Shirley Anne Field, Richard Roundtree, Michael Gambon, Tom Wilkinson and Carl Weathers, among others. The segment also paid tribute to Tina Turner, who was commemorated as both an actor and singer.

Die Hard Writer Reaffirms It's A Christmas Movie With Detailed Comparison To Another Holiday Classic

Die Hard is compared to the Christmas classic film White Christmas, with the former being even more Christmas-y. The debate on whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not has never been settled, with the cast and crew being divided. Regardless of the official status, Die Hard has become associated with the holiday season and has sparked lively debates among audiences.
Original Die Hard screenwriter Steven E. de Souza has reaffirmed the Bruce Willis action classic is indeed a Christmas movie, comparing it with the 1954 musical comedy White Christmas. Starring Bing Crosby and including an updated version of his classic Christmas track of the same name, White Christmas follows the story of the former Broadway star Captain Bob Wallace and Danny Kaye’s Private Phil Davis as they embark on a joint musical career as producers after meeting during a wartime Christmas show on the front lines of World War II.

Once again, the holidays – or is it holidaze? – are upon us, bringing with it a flurry of Christmas movies.
You have your endless parade of cartoons, specials, Christmas-themed episodes of your favorite TV shows, bad holiday comedies (1996’s Jingle All the Way and 2007’s Fred Claus come to mind), and Christmas-set horror movies (1984’s Gremlins). Then there’s the cheesy yet feel-good Lifetime and Hallmark films. And how can we forget the 24-hour marathon of 1983’s A Christmas Story (celebrating its 40th anniversary this year), beginning on Christmas Eve and ending on Christmas Day?
If those don’t do it for you, maybe these lists of Christmas movies will.

You can’t go wrong with these classics, which can lighten the hearts of even the most ardent cynics.

Tyrannical and brilliant, director Michael Curtiz created film legends out of mere stars, and turned movies into myth. Here are some of his greatest films.
When movie enthusiasts think of legendary director Michael Curtiz, the first thing that pops into their mind is Casablanca (1942), consistently named to, and occasionally topping, lists of the greatest films of all time. After last year’s infamous attack and a build-up sullied by bad blood, Sunday’s ceremony arrives with the organisers craving calm
A crisis management team has been appointed. Ditto a host – Jimmy Kimmel – whose deft handling of the 2017 best picture debacle (when La La Land was incorrectly announced rather than Moonlight) earned him a reputation as a safe pair of hands.
Rumours that Sarah Ferguson would present an award have been squashed. The Academy has set up a website memorialising 200 recently deceased industry players so as to avoid a repeat of this year’s Baftas backlash, when Phil Davis quit after an apparent snub of the late Bernard Cribbins.

Ken Bruce has claimed that BBC bosses have hastened his exit from Radio 2.
Last month, Bruce announced he would leave the corporation after 45 years to host a show on commercial rival, Greatest Hits Radio.
The veteran presenter, 72, has been on the BBC station since 1984, but told listeners in January: “I’ve done everything it is possible to do at Radio 2.”
He has hosted the 9:30am to 12pm weekday show since 1990, and been with the BBC since 1977 when he started out as a presenter on Radio Scotland.
His decision comes after Steve Wright was nudged out his Radio 2 afternoon slot, with Simon Mayo, Graham Norton and Paul O’Grady also moving on in recent months.
“I would stress that this is entirely my decision,” he said at the time. “I will always be very proud of my association with the BBC and Radio 2.”

Hugh Jackman has done a lot of roaring over the years.
The X-Men star has played Wolverine in six films since 2000.
The mutant is known for his intimidating battle cry as he bears his retractable claws.
In a new interview, Jackman – who is also known for his love of singing and performances in musicals like Les Miserables – said Wolverine’s “growling and yelling” has damaged his vocal cords.
“I’ve done some damage to my voice with Wolverine. My falsetto is not as strong as it used to be and that I directly put down to some of the growling and yelling,” Jackman said on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row programme on Monday (20 February).
“My vocal teacher in drama school would’ve been horrified with some of the things I did [as Wolverine].”
The Australian actor continued: “We learned a technique [in school] of how to shout and how to yell without ruining your voice.

Ben Stiller is still “proud” of Tropic Thunder, which he wrote and starred in, despite its controversial legacy.
The 2008 satire comedy about a group of hapless actors making a Vietnam War film famously featured Robert Downey Jr in blackface.
Downey Jr’s character is an Australian method actor, Kirk Lazarus, who undergoes “pigmentation alteration” to play an African-American soldier in the fictional film.
Though Downey Jr’s character was the butt of the joke, the decision to use blackface still attracted much criticism.
On Tuesday (21 February), Stiller responded to a fan on Twitter who asked the actor to “stop apologizing for doing this movie”.
Stiller replied saying he has never apologised for the film, which earned Downey Jr an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
“I make no apologies for Tropic Thunder,” the actor wrote. “Don’t know who told you that. It’s always been a controversial movie since when we opened.

The filming of Rust will be concluded a year and a half after the death of its cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, producers announced on Wednesday (22 February).
Hutchins was killed on the set after a prop gun held by the film’s producer and star Alec Baldwin discharged a real bullet, which struck the cinematographer.
Baldwin and the film’s armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed currently face involuntary manslaughter charges for the incident, however, the 30 Rock star will be among the cast and crew returning to production.
News of the film’s restart comes days after Baldwin was handed a major legal victory when a New Mexico district attorney dropped gun enhancement charges against the embattled actor.
Baldwin’s attorneys had blasted the decision to slap the enhancement charge on the actor because the law had been passed after the October 2021 shooting.

Succession is returning to screens in March – but a ‘conflicted” Jesse Armstrong has shared some news about the episodes.

Yes – after debuting new episodes in March, Succession will come to an end in May.

Dame Joan Collins has issued a complain to Sadiq Khan after being almost knocked down by a cyclist.
The Dynasty actor, 89, was getting out of a taxi in Covent Garden when she says she was “crashed into” by a “masked cyclist with no lights and weaving on the pavement”.
The incident prompted her to post an Instagram message to Mayor of London to “do something” about cyclists who ‘consider themselves above the law”.
“Getting out of a #blackcab on the way to @rules_restaurant, we discovered #maidenlane was closed to all traffic,” she wrote on Thursday (23 February).
“However, that didn’t stop a masked #cyclist with no lights and weaving on the pavement from crashing into me, almost knocking me over. How much longer must we live with closed roads and cyclists who consider themselves above the law?
She continued: “Why don’t you do something @mayorofldn @sadiq before this...

Grey’s Anatomy finally aired Ellen Pompeo’s farewell episode last night (23 February). Unfortunately, fans of the long-running medical drama are not happy at all.
The actor has played the leading role of Meredith Grey for all 19 seasons of the hit ABC medical drama, which first aired in 2005.
Her final episode, titled “I’ll Follow the Sun”, showed Grey departing to move to Boston with her family for a new job.
Pompeo is still going to record voiceovers for the show, and things have been left open for her to return again in the future.
But viewers who have stuck with the show for years called her exit “underwhelming” and a “s*** show”.
Just to quickly recap, the episode saw Meredith’s love interest Nick (Scott Speedman) call Meredith as she boarded the plane to Boston and confess his love for her. She pretended that the line was breaking up and...

R Kelly has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for child sex crimes.
A federal judge ruled he will serve this sentence at the same time as the 30 years he is currently serving. As a result of the new sentencing, he will serve an extra year in prison.
On Thursday (23 February), the sentencing was announced after a jury in Chicago found the singer guilty of six of the 13 charges brought against him in September 2022.
These included three counts of coercing minors into illegal sexual activity as well as three counts of creating pornography that showed him abusing a minor.
R Kelly is currently serving 30 years in prison for racketeering and sex trafficking charges.
Prosecutors argued that R Kelly’s sentence should be added on top of the current sentence he is serving, with Jeannice Williams Appenteng stating in court: “The only way to ensure he will not reoffend is to...

British actor Phil Davis announced his resignation from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, which hosts the annual BAFTAs, following the 2023 awards ceremony, which he called “embarrassing.”
Davis, who has starred in films including “Secrets & Lies” and “Quadrophenia,” plus series like “Doctor Who,” “Sherlock,” and “Slow Horses,” slammed the BAFTAs as an “embarrassing travesty” this year. Davis was previously nominated for Best Supporting Actor for 2004 film “Vera Drake.”
“The BAFTA awards were an embarrassing travesty,” Davis tweeted. “Cutting deserving winners speeches for toe-curling non interviews. Poor [host] Richard E. Grant pretending to arrive in a Batmobile and no Bernard Cribbens in memorium. I resigned my membership.”

Matt Lucas has made a surprising admission about The Great British Bake Off, months after quitting the show.
The comedian, 48, joined the Channel 4 baking competition in 2020 as a host alongside presenter Noel Fielding and judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood. He announced he was stepping down in December.
Speaking in a new interview on the Deeney Talks podcast about his decision to step back from Bake Off, which he referred to as a “pandemic job”, Lucas admitted that he had “never seen the show” before he was approached to star on it.
“I’d never seen the show beforehand and I was not a baker,” he said.
“They were just looking for a new host and it came at a time where I had been living in LA for seven years and I had just sold my house there and I was thinking about coming back and spending more...

South Park viewers have spotted a brief reference to the alleged rivalry between Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Catherine, Princess of Wales, in a recent episode.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were depicted in the comedy animated series, in an episode titled “The Worldwide Privacy Tour”.
Though not mentioned by name, the couple is referenced through the cartoon characters – a British prince with red hair, and his American former actor wife.
Since its release last week, the South Park episode has been widely discussed for mocking the pair. Harry and Meghan have denied reports that they were seeking legal action.
One detail that’s been largely missed until now is a nod to claims of a years-long rivalry between Meghan and Kate.
In the programme, there is a segment that shows the Prince’s wife in a series of magazine covers resembling real-life ones that have featured Meghan.
However, there...

Phil Davis, an English actor who has appeared in such TV series as Doctor Who and Sherlock, as well as such films as Vera Drake, In the Name of the Father and Alien 3, said on Wednesday that he has resigned from BAFTA, calling Sunday’s awards show “an embarrassing travesty.”

BAFTA later said though that Cribbins would be remembered during its TV Awards broadcast on May 14.
