ChainFest, a chain food celebration that held its inaugural edition in LA last year, is passing the baton to Medium Rare, a fast growing producer of live events and manager of brands, in a multiyear deal.
B.J. Novak of The Office, who founded ChainFest with chef Tim Hollingsworth , helped attract a celeb turnout to its first outing. Jack Davis, founder of Crypt TV (recently sold to Brat TV) is also a co-founder. Chain Fest stakeholders see the first edition as proof of concept but want to improve and expand the fest into a broader entertainment festival with live music and events. The plan is to launch the fest in New York and other U.S. cities.
Medium Rare, founded by Joe Silberzweig and Adam Richman, works closely with Shaquille O’Neal, who brokered a 2020 deal for Authentic Brands to take a 20% interest in Medium Rare. O’Neal has a big stake in both companies.

Crypt TV, an entertainment company that was launched in 2015 by Jack Davis and Eli Roth, with Blumhouse Productions on board as an investor, has put together it first domestic feature film: a new take on Mary Shelley’s classic story Frankenstein called The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster. We had previously heard that Rlje Films will be giving the film a theatrical, VOD, and digital release on June 9th, but now those plans have changed slightly. The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster will still be reaching theatre screens on June 9th, but the VOD and digital side of the release has been shifted back to June 23rd. So the film will have a two week theatre-only run before it’s available to watch at home.
The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster will also be streaming on Shudder and AllBlk at some point down the line.

Al Jaffee, the stalwart artist and writer for Mad Magazine, passed away on April 10, 2023. He was 102 years old. The world lost a giant.
Jaffee is the notable inventor of the Mad Fold-In, which invited readers to crease an image on the back cover of the magazine, pushing the sides of the drawing together and forming a new, previously unseen image. Jaffee drew Fold-Ins for Mad from 1968 until 2019. He was also known for his "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions" books, as well as strange sourcebooks of fun, crazy inventions. He once argued that smokers would someday smoke three-foot-long cigarettes, arguing the design's many advantages. He also thought up several clever ways to dispose of dog waste. Jaffee began his cartooning career in 1942 and retired officially in 2020, earning him the Guinness World Record for having the longest career of any cartoonist.
Working for Mad Magazine, of course, meant that Jaffee's influence on film and TV is immeasurable.

During a podcast interview in 2018, actor and foodie B.J. Novak teased an idea he had for a chain-themed restaurant that would, contrary to the fundamental business model of chain restaurants, consist of a single brick-and-mortar location. It would be a nostalgia play, drawing on a collective wistfulness for the menu items and now-kitschy aesthetic elements that define iconic, ubiquitous American food chains like Taco Bell, Tgi Fridays, Outback Steakhouse, Chili’s and the like.
Two years of ideating later, by 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic (and the subsequent wave of outdoor dining) forced Novak and his team to pivot from their initial idea to start a sit-down restaurant in Los Angeles and instead launch temporary pop-ups in parking lots around the city in March 2021, with chef and Chain co-founder Tim Hollingsworth in charge of the rotating menu and kitchen. Since then, Chain has undergone a series of further evolutions. In its current iteration,...

Superstar comedienne Phyllis Diller died today in Los Angeles, California. She was 95. Diller was not the first female stand-up comic ( ‘Moms’ Mabely had been performing since the 40′s ), but her outrageous fashions and irreverent sense of humor established her as a media comedy sensation in the 1960′s. Before Rosanne Barr, Diller joked about the drudgery of housework ( and a clueless husband named ” Fang ” ) and her self-depreciating gags no doubt inspired Totie Fields and Joan Rivers. Ms. Diller ( born Phyllis Ada Driver ) was writing radio copy in the San Francisco area in the 50′s when she decided to enter the world of stand-up comedy. After success at clubs, she soon branched into television with an appearance on Groucho Marx’s quiz show ” You Bet Your Life “. After nightclubs she perhaps had her biggest successes in TV as a fixture of talk shows, variety shows and game shows, although she had little...
