Kevin Smith Reveals Plan for Moving Forward With Mallrats 2 Without Shannen Doherty
Image
Kevin Smith's quest to finally realize a sequel to Mallrats has been many years in the making, but after the recent passing of one of the film's stars, the director had paused any further development of Mallrats 2. However, Smith recently revealed a possible solution that would act as a loving tribute to his late friend and collaborator.

Doherty passed away on July 13 after a long battle with cancer, understandably putting any ideas for a sequel out of Smith's mind. At the time of her passing, Smith posted a tribute via his Instagram to his late friend saying that Doherty "was the only reason Mallrats got green-lit in 1995." For a Mallrats sequel to happen, the loss of Doherty had to be acknowledged in some way, possibly excluding her character of Rene entirely. However, Smith appears to have come up with a possible solution, a re-casting that also acts as a loving tribute.

'I Already Miss You': Kevin Smith Shares Touching Tribute to Mallrats' Shannen Doherty
Image
The passing of Shannen Doherty has many of her friends in mourning. Among them is Kevin Smith, the film director who became friends with Doherty three decades ago during the production of Mallrats.

On Sunday, it was announced that Doherty had died after living with cancer since 2015. She was just 53 years old. Hours after the announcement, Smith took to Instagram to share a handful of images of himself with Doherty, both from the 1990s along with a more recent reunion. The director went on to credit Doherty for getting Mallrats made, feeling grateful that she happened to pick his movie to be a part of coming off of the immense success of Beverly Hills, 90210.

The Mummy (1999) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
From the 1930s into the ‘50s, Universal brought the horror genre some of its greatest icons. Dracula. Frankenstein’s Monster. The Wolf Man. The Creature from the Black Lagoon. The Invisible Man. The Mummy. The studio has returned to these characters multiple times over the decades. But the one that has had the most successful revival was the Mummy, who was brought back to the screen in a family friendly adventure film in 1999. A film that mixed monsters with Indiana Jones style action… and became a blockbuster that’s now seen as a beloved classic. So let’s take a look back at the making of The Mummy ‘99 and find out What the F*ck Happened to This Horror Movie.

To properly cover The Mummy, we first have to flash back to 1922. That’s when the discovery – and the opening – of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun’s tomb captured the world’s imagination.

The Mummy Director Reveals His Problem With the Tom Cruise Remake
Image
Twenty-five years ago, director Stephen Sommers turned a respected, but admittedly pretty dusty, Universal horror movie into a rip-roarin’ adventure. It’s fair to say all these years later that 1999’s The Mummy the best Indiana Jones movie not directed by Steven Spielberg. And yet, when Universal wanted to remake it again, they didn’t even bother to consult Sommers.

Is it any wonder, then, that 2017’s The Mummy was a colossal flop?

Talking with Sommers about the 25th anniversary of The Mummy ’99, The Hollywood Reporter asked if he had any involvement with the 2017 film, to which the director gave a short, clear response.

“No,” he answered. “Actually, I was kind of insulted because the writers and director of that Tom Cruise one, no one ever contacted me. I contact people if I was going to take over somebody’s thing.”

Perhaps the most surprising part of that statement is...

25 Years Ago, Brendan Fraser's The Mummy Was A Box Office Smash (And The End Of An Era)
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"'The Mummy' isn't really trying to scare you – it's trying to entertain you." This is what /Film's Chris Evangelista lovingly wrote of 1999's "The Mummy" in 2021. Directed by Stephen Sommers and starring Brendan Fraser as the swashbuckling Rick O'Connell, the film became a somewhat unexpected hit, so much so that it ended up being one of the highest-grossing films of 1999 overall. Critics were a bit mixed on it in its day. It was an action/adventure film, the likes of which Hollywood had released many times before. Be that as it may, a film designed purely to entertain (rather than to scare) resonated with audiences in a big way. It was pulpy lightning in a bottle.

Universal had, for years,...

How The Mummy Almost Didn't Get Made
Image
The Mummy's 1999 reimagining faced development hell, including dark and violent takes from various directors like George Romero and Clive Barker. Stephen Sommers eventually got the green light with an 18-page pitch, creating a leaner, faster, scarier action-adventure film with a romantic twist. The treacherous shoot in Marrakech, Morocco, involved snakes, sandstorms, and deadly bites, leading to health hazards and dehydration for the cast and crew.

It has been 25 years since Universal Pictures reimagined one of their big movie monsters as an Indiana Jones-inspired adventure tale. 1999's The Mummy wasn't a conventional take on the 1932 film of the same name, but its fresh spin resonated with viewers looking for a fun time at the movies. It was a mix of old-school sensibilities, a dash of horror, a heroic lead, and a stellar ensemble cast that allowed The Mummy to overcome mixed reviews and become one of the biggest hits of the year.

The Witcher: Laurence Fishburne joins Liam Hemsworth in season 4
Image
When The Witcher season 4 starts streaming on Netflix, our hero Geralt of Rivia is going to have a whole new look. That’s because Henry Cavill is no longer involved, with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt. Today, Deadline has revealed that Hemsworth is being joined in the cast of The Witcher season 4 by Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix and the John Wick franchise), who will be playing a character named Regis.

If you’re like me and don’t have any familiarity with the Witcher franchise outside of the Netflix show, chances are that the first person you think of when you see the name Regis is Regis Philbin. But, of course, Fishburne’s casting on this show is not going to require any sort of Philbin impression. Instead, the Regis character he’ll be playing is someone who was introduced in Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel Baptism of Fire.

3 Iconic Horror Movie Directors Who Almost Made 1999's The Mummy
Image
The 1999 film "The Mummy" went through several changes in directors before Stephen Sommers took over, resulting in a completely different movie with a mixture of action, adventure, and horror elements. The film's original directors, including George A. Romero and Clive Barker, had unique and dark concepts for "The Mummy" that were ultimately deemed too weird. Stephen Sommers' vision for "The Mummy" involved combining elements of "Indiana Jones" and classic horror, resulting in a successful romantic adventure with horror elements that pleased audiences.

The 1999 adventure film The Mummy was almost made by three different horror directors, who would have made completely different movies. The 1932 horror classic The Mummy, directed by Karl Freund and starring Boris Karloff, got a “remake” in the late 1990s, but with a completely different story. The Mummy kept Imhotep as the antagonist but introduced adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) as protagonists.

The Mummy: How Brendan Fraser's Adventure Movie Almost Turned Out Very Differently
Image
In 1999, Universal Studios released The Mummy, a remake of their classic monster movie. Despite hitting theaters just one week before the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, The Mummy struck a chord with audiences around the world, bringing in more than $400 million dollars at the global box office. Viewers fell in love with Branden Fraser and his charming Rick O’Connell, reminding them of the fun, globe-trotting adventure films that dominated cinemas in the 80.

However, before Sommers boarded the project, producers James Jacks and Sean Daniel had a very different vision for the movie. The Mummy was originally intended to be a low-budget horror movie, and the first entry in a proposed trilogy of films. The two producers spent close to ten years working with multiple directors - including George Romero, Joe Dante, and Clive Barker - but every idea was shot down by the studio for either being too dark or too expensive.

The Mummy 4: Wtf Happened to this Unmade Movie?
Image
In 1999, Universal Studios released The Mummy, a fresh take on the classic monster movie. The Stephen Sommers-directed film was a huge hit and turned Brendan Fraser into a bonafide movie star. The success of the first movie led to two sequels – The Mummy Returns in 2001, and Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008. And though a fourth film was slated for production, it was ultimately never released.

So whatever happened to this mysterious Mummy movie? Will it ever see the light of day, or will it remain forever hidden like an ancient relic? Let’s find out Wtf Happened to the Unmade Mummy: Rise of the Aztec Movie.

Before The Mummy’s release, Universal Studios had spent close to a decade trying to get a remake off the ground. In the late 1980s, producers James Jacks and Sean Daniel sought to modernize the 1932 classic and hoped to turn it into a potential franchise.

“Where were you in ’76?” The newest entrant in Criterion’s 4K disc club is Richard Linklater’s rowdy but affectionate ode to high school nostalgia, Texas-style. It’s a Bicentennial summer update of American Graffiti and in just 14 years the entire face of America has changed. Youth idealism is dead and the main rule is to avoid plans made by parents. Linklater’s graduation night sticks with kids free to roam on their own and have a wild time. He has a terrific way with performances that include a string of memorable faces that became much better-known, plus a couple of future stars.

Bringing In A New Director Cost Tombstone A Sizeable Chunk Of Its Crew
Image
The 1990s saw the rebirth of westerns. "Dances with Wolves" won Best Picture at the 63rd Academy Awards, as did "Unforgiven" at the 65th. The genre has never returned to the dominant ubiquity it had in Hollywood's Golden Age. However, the 1990s put Westerns on the track to enjoy a healthy presence in 21st-century cinema. One of the most fondly remembered westerns of this decade is 1993's "Tombstone." It's not as meditative as "Unforgiven," or as politically concerned as "Dances With Wolves." No, it's just a good bloody shoot-em-up.

"Tombstone" retells the story of the Earp brothers and the gunfight at O.K. Corral. The story had been told on film before, such as in John Ford's "My Darling Clementine," and transcended into a silver screen myth. "Tombstone," starring Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp, was just the latest version of it. Screenwriter Kevin Jarre was originally set to direct...

‘The Best Man: The Final Chapters’ Is First Peacock Original to Land on Nielsen Streaming Series Top 10 (Exclusive)
Image
After premiering on Dec. 22, “The Best Man: The Final Chapters” became Peacock’s first original project to make it onto Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming rankings.

According to data provided to NBCU by Nielsen and exclusively obtained by Variety, “The Best Man: The Final Chapters” is ranked in the No. 5 position in an early version of Nielsen’s Top 10 Streaming Originals chart for the Dec. 19-25 viewing period, during which it was available for four days. (Exact information about minutes watched during this period is not yet available.)

As such, this also marks the young NBCU-owned streamer’s biggest ever series debut. That title was previously held by “Bel-Air,” Peacock’s dramatic reimagining of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”

Peacock has previously appeared on the Nielsen’s overall streaming rankings, but only with acquired episodes of the Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone” and the Universal Pictures movie “Halloween Ends.” Additionally, the Universal...

Trying To Meddle With The Ending Lost Paramount Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing
Image
Hollywood has always shown a preference for films that offer reconciliation between their Black and white subjects. And as a result, the industry is notoriously skittish with the work of Spike Lee. There's been a pattern, especially at the Academy Awards, where Lee's films are concerned: the director is consistently snubbed in favor of films that comfort white audiences — films like "Driving Miss Daisy," which took home the Oscar for Best Picture in 1990 while "Do The Right Thing" was shut out from the category altogether.

Lee's incendiary third feature bred a fair amount of controversy. Set over one sweltering summer day in New York neighborhood Bed-Stuy, "Do The Right Thing" is a pressure cooker for interracial tension. The film follows the patrons and employees at a pizza joint owned by Sal (Danny Aiello) and operated by his two sons. It's the site of a particularly gruesome instance of police brutality,...

The Witcher: Blood Origin was shortened to 4 episodes for optimum story flow
Image
Originally expected to be a six episode series, The Witcher prequel The Witcher: Blood Origin will be “a four-part special event” when it reaches the Netflix streaming service on December 25th. Our own Alex Maidy already had the chance to watch the show, giving it an 8/10 review you can read Here – and in his review he said, “The limited four-episode run is just long enough to build up the characters without overstaying its welcome. In fact, I would have enjoyed more episodes or even another standalone mini-series focused on this era.” During a recent interview with Netflix, showrunner Declan de Barra said the idea to cut the show down from six episodes to four came up in the editing room so the show could have “optimum story flow”.

The showrunner said, “This felt like a two-part movie. You never want to be watching a movie going, ‘I love this movie.

‘The Best Man: The Final Chapters’ Trailer Continues the Story in New Peacock Series (Video)

The “The Best Man” cast has come back to give audiences an update on the beloved group of friends in the film franchise’s new limited series “The Best Man: The Final Chapters.” And you can watch the trailer right now.

The eight-episode continuance picks up nearly 10 years after the sequel “The Best Man Holiday,” and per the logline finds our group of friends “as relationships evolve and past grievances resurface in the unpredictable stages of midlife crisis meets midlife renaissance.”

We get a lot of that in the trailer — new professional opportunities, difficult relationship challenges — and Lance absolutely failing to do a remotely credible performance in a fragrance commercial. But at least we can say, based on the trailer, that the gang appears to be in a better place with one another than the last time we saw them.

Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, and Anya Chalotra in The Witcher (2019)
“The Witcher” will return with a fourth season with Liam Hemsworth taking the reins as Geralt of Rivia, replacing Henry Cavill, Netflix announced on Saturday and both Cavill and Hemsworth sharing the news on their Instagram accounts.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” Cavill said in a statement. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam Hemsworth To Replace Henry Cavill In ‘The Witcher’ Season 4 After Early Netflix Renewal
Liam Hemsworth in The Last Song (2010)
Netflix has renewed The Witcher for a fourth season with a twist.

Liam Hemsworth will replace Henry Cavill in the epic drama series, taking the reins as Geralt of Rivia.

The move comes ahead of the third season of the series, which will return in summer 2023. A four-part prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin launches December 25, 2022.

Cavill, who revealed earlier this week he will return in the role of Superman, played the grim Geralt of Rivia, the bane of supernatural beasties in the first three seasons of the drama series.

The Witcher is a story of the intertwined destinies of three individuals in the vast world of The Continent, where humans, elves, witchers, gnomes, and monsters battle to survive and thrive, and where good and evil is not easily identified.

It also stars Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan.

Hemsworth, who is best known for starring in the Hunger Games franchise,...

The Witcher: Blood Origin prequel series condensed from six episodes to four?
Image
Netflix had announced that the prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin, which is set in “an elven world” 1200 years before the events we saw in The Witcher, would have a six episode run. But now the Witcher fan site Redanian Intelligance reports that they’ve heard the show is being condensed from six episodes down to four.

Here’s the Redanian Intelligence report:

Keep in mind that the footage was already shot as six episodes, which likely means heavier editing and potentially lots of footage on the cutting room floor. To support that, we learned the writing credits for all of the Blood Origin episodes and they go like this:

Episode 1: Declan de Barra

Episode 2: Alex Meenehan/Aaron Stewart-Ahn

Episode 3: Tania Lotia/Kiersten Van Horne

Episode 4: Declan de Barra/Tasha Huo

We can’t claim to know all the ins and outs of how crediting works...
