20,000 Species Of Bees, the debut film by Basque filmmaker Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren, and Society Of The Snow, J. A. Bayona’s survival drama for Netflix, dominated the top honors at the eleventh Platino Awards Saturday evening.

The Mexican award show took place this year at the El Gran Tlachco theater in Xcaret Park, Riviera Maya. Bayona took best director on the night for Society Of The Snow. The film also won Best Feature while 20,000 Species Of Bees nabbed Best Screenplay and Best First Feature.

20,000 Species Of Bees debuted at the Berlin Film Festival, where lead actor Sofía Otero took the silver bear for best leading performance. The film is set during a summer in a village house linked to beekeeping and follows an eight-year-old and her mother experiencing revelations that will change their lives forever.

In a triumphant night for Spain, J.A. Bayona’s Oscar-nominated “Society of the Snow” swept the top prizes at Platino Xcaret, named after the venue of the annual Platino Awards this year, which took place at the Xcaret Park, Riviera Maya, Mexico.

Something you often hear cinephiles proclaim is that “Every year is a good year in film.” Well, that’s obviously true––if one pays attention and knows where to look––but then there are also years that are simply better. To me, 2023 has turned out to be one of those.

It’s a year where the top festivals like Cannes, Berlin, and Venice all overperformed with stellar lineups. Geographically speaking, American/UK cinema can be proud of its output while productions from the rest of the world, especially France, Japan, Latin America, didn’t disappoint either. It’s also a year where not only indie/arthouse films delivered, but (some) blockbusters dared to get smart too. Even the presumed Oscar contenders this season include legitimate masterpieces in the mix.

Themes of aging have always undergirded Victor Erice’s work. His feature debut, 1973’s Spirit of the Beehive, is one of the finest of all coming-of-age films, capturing a few days in the life of young girl as she struggles to understand, through nascent eyes, the evils and contradictions of life in Francoist Spain. Ten years later came El Sur, Erice’s famously incomplete adaptation of Adelaida García Morales’s novella, another story about a child who grows gradually aware of her country’s—and family’s—troubled past. And 1992’s The Quince Tree Sun saw Erice turn his attention more explicitly to art as a means of physical and spiritual preservation: the act of ossifying a moment in time in an attempt to stave off the inevitable.

Updated with festival response: Spanish director Victor Erice, who was absent from the Cannes Film Festival premiere of his film Close Your Eyes, has posted an open letter criticizing festival Delegate General Thierry Frémaux over his handling of the selection of his film and explaining his decision not to attend.

Revolving around an investigation into the disappearance of an actor during a film shoot, Close Your Eyes is Erice’s first feature in three decades.

The film premiered to strong reviews on May 22 in the Cannes Premiere sidebar, created in 2021 to welcome films from more established filmmakers, with key cast Helena Miquel, Jose Coronado, Ana Torrent, Manolo Solo and María León in attendance but without Erice.

In an open letter posted on the website of Spain’s El Pais newspaper on Thursday, Erice said he had submitted the film to Official Selection as well as the Cannes parallel section of Directors’ Fortnight.

Barcelona-based sales shingle Filmax has acquired international rights to Spanish thriller “Ellipsis,” directed and co-written by Goya-nominated David Marqués.

“Ellipsis” toplines a slew of Spanish-language world stars, including Diego Peretti, José Coronado (“No Rest for the Wicked”), and iconic Mexican thesp Cecilia Suárez (“The House of Flowers”) and rising star Georgina Amorós (“Elite”).

Peretti plays protagonist Leo, a well-known author of mystery novels. He is paid a visit by a man claiming to be a journalist in a secret location where Leo is penning his next novel. But only his agent knows where he is. Could it be that a dark secret from Adriana ( Amorós), his lover, is behind the surprise visit?

The script was co-written by Rafael Calatayud Cano (“Tales of the Lockdown”) and Marqués, who is best-known for writing Spanish comedy-drama “Champions,” a box office and format smash hit directed by Javier Fesser.

Film Factory Entertainment has picked up international sales rights to Victor Erice’s highly anticipated “Cerrar los ojos,” which marks the fourth feature by the legendary Spanish filmmaker, writer-director of “The Spirit of the Beehive,” reuniting him with Ana Torrent, the wide-eyed very young star of that milestone film.

Now wrapping its shoot in Granada, Almería and Asturias before moving to Madrid, “Cerrar los Ojos” is set for 2023 Spanish theatrical release by “Alcarràs” distributor Avalon.

Spanish auteur behind the 1973 arthouse hit will direct a new film, Cerrar los Ojos, due for release in 2023

Veteran Spanish director Víctor Erice, best known for 1973 classic The Spirit of the Beehive, is making his first feature film in 30 years, it has been revealed.

El Diario reports that the new project, titled Cerrar los Ojos (Close Your Eyes), is being funded by Canal Sur, the public broadcaster for the Andalusia region of Spain. No information has been divulged as to its content, other than that José Coronado and María León have been cast in the lead roles, and that it is due for release in 2023.

Update: El Pais has shared the first details of the film, which will take a meta approach as we follow a director living in retirement and now enjoying a life of fishing. He left a film in the 1990s unfinished after his star (also a friend from the military) disappeared. A television program investigating his disappearance causes the director to reunite with his former collaborators, leading to an “emotional earthquake.” See the original story below.

Retitled from the even more indistinct “Way Down” for U.S. release, Spanish heist “The Vault” stubbornly remains one of those movies you know you’ll be forgetting almost as soon as you finish watching it. There’s nothing really wrong with this glossy tale of a “mission impossible” raid on a heavily fortified Madrid bank to retrieve treasure, as slickly directed by Jaume Balaguero of the “[rec]” series. It’s just that a caper of this type needs tense set pieces, surprising twists, idiosyncratic characters or charismatic stars — ideally, all the above — to distinguish itself, and this one falls short in all those departments.

Viewers who really love this sort of thing may get caught up in the procedural aspects of the story anyway. But anyone desiring more from a heist movie than the genre’s familiar conventions professionally executed will find “The Vault” a bit empty. Saban Films is...

Saban Films has unleashed a brand new trailer for the action-thriller heist ‘The Vault’ starring Freddie Highmore.

Madrid — Spain’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today the nominees for the 33rdedition of the Goya Awards, to be held at the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones in Sevilla on Feb. 2, 2019.

Leading the pack with 13 nominations is Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s ultra-current political thriller “The Realm,” which impressed in San Sebastian’s main competition. The film is produced by Spain’s Tornasol and Atresmedia Cine and co-produced by Le Pacte and Mondex Cie out of France.

Spain’s foreign-language Oscar submission “Champions” scored an impressive 11 nominations of its own. The heartwarming dramedy about a special needs basketball team was a breakout hit at the Spanish box office this year, grossing €18.5 million ($21.4 million Usd) for Universal Pictures Intl. Spain.

Festival to screen 131 films, of which 36 are directed or co-directed by women.

Richard Gere will kick off festivities with the opening night gala screening of Norman: The Moderate Rise And Tragic Fall Of A New York Fixer. The festival runs from March 3-12.

The 34th annual Miami Film Festival (Mff) will close with the international premiere of Carlos Theron’s For Your Own Good from Spain starring José Coronado, Javier Cámara and Roberto Alamo.

Cuba is prominently featured in the programme. Kenny Ortega’s A Change Of Heart gets its world premiere and filmed in Miami and stars Gloria Estefan, Aimee Teegarden, Virginia Madsen, Jim Belushi and William Levy.

Fernando Perez’s Last Days In Havana (Últimos Días En La Habana) will receive its North American premiere. Uruguayan-Argentinian director Adrián Caetano, who competed in Cannes in 2006 with Chronicle Of An Escape, will debut The Lost Brother (El Otro Hermano) starring Leonardo Sbaraglia and Daniel Hendler.

"Find out what they know or what they suspect?" This looks pretty cool. An official Us trailer has debuted online for a Spanish crime film called To Steal from a Thief (originally Cien años de perdón in Spain), which is a tricky little thriller about a coordinated bank robbery that goes awry. On a rainy morning in Valencia, six armed men in disguise try to rob a bank, but they're really after the contents of safety deposit box 314, which actually doesn't contain what they think it does. Not only that, but the government wants to stop them and the rainwater floods their escape route. Starring Luis Tosar, Rodrigo De la Serna, Raul Arevalo, Marian Alvarez and Jose Coronado. The masks aren't the most inventive, but the rest of the film seems like it has some sneaky twists and turns. I really want to check this out. See for yourself below.

The company will follow up its box-office hit Marshland with the $1.9m production.

Seville-based outfit La Zanfona Producciones is set to produce a futuristic film called Shadow Inside (La Sombra Adentro) and a comedy titled Mi Cadida Cofradia, following the success of Alberto Rodriguez’s thriller Marshland, which took close to $10m in Spain last year and has sold well internationally.

Shadow Inside will be set in 2024 and tell the story of six soldiers who survive a Civil War in Spain and escape to a small village where strange things start to happen.

It will be the feature directing debut of Seville-based director David Sainz, who achieved a cult following with his web series Malviviendo and TV movie Obra 67. Sainz’s company Diffferent (sic) Entertainment will co-produce.

“We are looking to shoot Shadow Inside next year in Seville and the budget will be €1.8m [$1.9m] euros,” Gervasio Iglesias, head of La Zanfona, told ScreenDaily...

Richard Linklater’s Boyhood has been named the best film of the past year by the members of the International Federation of Film Critics, Fipresci.

The poll for the Fipresci Grand Prix 2014 - Best Film of the Year gathered votes from 553 members throughout the world.

In the first phase, participants nominated feature-length films that received their world premiere no earlier than July 1, 2013. This led to a final round between the four finalists: Boyhood by Richard Linklater, Ida by Pawel Pawlikowski, The Grand Budapest Hotel by Wes Anderson, and Winter Sleep by Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

This is the first Linklater has won the prize, which has previously gone to Michael Haneke, Paul Thomas Anderson, Jafar Panahi, Pedro Almodóvar, Jean-Luc Godard and Nuri Bilge Ceylan, among others, since its establishment in 1999.

Lately we've seen cinematic apocalypses from a wide array of intelligent people: the Spanish import The Returned dealt with zombies in a low-key and tragic fashion; Soderbergh's Contagion went with the biological angle; Alfonso Cuaron imagined a newly sterile world in Children of Men; and you can probably guess what happens to half the world in Fernando Meirelles' underrated Blindness from a few years back.

  Feel free to add another very interesting Spanish import to the "erudite apocalypse" sub-genre: David and Alex Pastor's The Last Days poses an odd question: what if people started to simply fear the outdoors? "Fear" is putting it lightly. The Last Days blows way past simple agoraphobia; this is more like a virus that strikes if you go outside, and it simply fries your brain.    The epidemic starts casually enough: a few bizarre deaths hit the news, and then our hero notices that...

Spanish based distribution house Filmax International recently released a psychological thriller, titled Son of Cain, this year. Released exclusively in Spain, Son of Cain involves a gifted child with sociopathic tendencies. The film stars José Coronado (El Cuerpo), Julio Manrique (Soldiers of Salamina) and David Solans. Also, this is director Jesús Monllaó first feature and the script was developed from Ignacio García-Valiño's novel, Querido Cain. A trailer for this film has just been released and fans of thrillers can preview this title here. The story deals with a difficult child. Nico (Solans) is confrontational and abusive. He delights in little tortures and in the game of chess. A psychologist is brought in to treat this teenager, but even Julio (Manrique) is outmatched by this intelligent and sadistic young man. ★★★☆☆ Spanish horror The Body (2012) is the entertaining directorial debut from Oriol Paulo, the scribe behind 2010's Julia's Eyes. Opening on a stormy night, we see the white-eyed security guard of a morgue fleeing for his life, only to be hit by a car and end up in hospital, comatose. So the mystery begins. Enter Inspector Jaime Peña (José Coronado), a coffee-swilling chain-smoker who's haunted by his own dark past. He quickly discovers that a body has vanished without a trace, and that the only potential suspect is the dead woman's husband and business partner Álex (Hugo Silva), whom Jaime brings in for questioning.

After these riveting first fifteen minutes we, learn that Álex is indeed the murderer, but there's a twist - he wasn't responsible for the disappearance of the body. For the most part, the film's drama is contained within the setting of the shadowy morgue, accompanied by atmospheric (if hammy) thunder and lightning.

Film4 FrightFest 2013, returning for its 4teenth year, has unveiled its biggest line-up in history. From Thurs 22 August to Monday 26 August, the UK’s leading event for genre fans will be at the Empire Cinema in London’s Leicester Square to present 51 films on three screens. Empire 1 will house the main event while the Discovery strands will play in Empires 2 & 4. The new FrightFest Xtra strand, also in Screen 2, will allow fans to catch up with sold-out performances of the most popular attractions.

This year there are eleven countries representing five continents with a record-breaking thirty-three UK or European premieres and ten world premieres.

Rodar y Rodar's new flim, The Body (El Cuerpo) directed by Oriol Paulo, has found itself some Stateside distribution via Outsider Pictures. Still no word on when we'll be seeing it here, but at least we know that it's coming.

The film stars Jaime Pena as a police inspector sent to investigate the disappearance of a woman's body from a morgue. José Coronado, Belén Rueda, Hugo Silva, and Aura Garrido also star.

Synopsis

While fleeing in panic, a man is knocked over by a lorry. When the police arrive, they discover that he is the night watchman at a morgue near the site of the accident. When they enter his workplace, they find that one of the bodies, Mayka Villaverde, a society personality, has disappeared from Room 3.
