Dream will continue his journey through the cosmos after almost three years. Based on Neil Gaiman’s DC comic series, the first season of The Sandman was much loved by the viewers for the way it balanced dark fantasy and supernatural horror. The show follows Morpheus (aka Dream), the anthropomorphic personification of dreams and stories, as he rebuilds his realm after a century of imprisonment, with the story exploring a ton of myths and family drama.
Now, the finale season is almost here. Showrunners Allan Heinberg, David S. Goyer, and Neil Gaiman will soon bring Dream’s story to an end, but not before one last ride. Here’s everything you need to know before The Sandman returns.

One of this week’s new releases stars Steve Coogan and a penguin, so here’s a film quiz about other actors and their animal co-stars.
They say you should never work with children or animals, but that’s not stopped movie stars teaming up with animal co-stars. There are usually mixed results – even the can’t-lose buddy pairing of “Tom Hanks and a French mastiff” definitely didn’t end happily for both of them (spoilery details here). Now in UK cinemas, Peter Cattaneo’s new movie The Penguin Lessons teams up Partridge and penguin, so we’ve got some quiz questions about other live-action animal star vehicles as part of your usual movie-related trivia safari.

One of the finest additions to the world of fantasy dramas, The Sandman lore has been amusing fans for ages — first through its comic book series, which was released in 1989, and then its live-action adaptation in the form of a television series, which first debuted on the screens in 2022. But it is not done leaving fans at the edge of their seats just yet.
That said, fans of the live-action saga might as well rejoice once again, for the masterpiece series will soon be returning with its second season to the television screens. And, this time around, it is expected to bring about even more entertainment than before as it seems to be here to school every fantasy drama a thing or two on sibling rivalry.

Netflix will release the second and final season of “The Sandman” in two volumes: the first six episodes will premiere on July 3, followed by the final five episodes on July 24.
The dark fantasy series was cancelled in the wake of the disturbing allegations against Neil Gaiman — who developed and executive produced the show in addition to writing the comic on which it’s based — but the new season promises to bring Dream’s story arc to its thrilling conclusion.

The Penguin Lessons came to us in the form of a memoir by Tom Michell in 2016, and it has finally been made into a movie. Adapted by BAFTA-winning writer Jeff Pope, the story follows a British teacher who takes a job in Argentina in 1976. With the country’s political turmoil as the backdrop, the movie tells a human tale that reminds us that even in times of chaos and uncertainty, the bonds we form become the reason to stay alive.
Oscar-nominated director Peter Cattaneo helmed the dramedy and promises to bring his signature blend of heartfelt storytelling and nuanced character portrayal. Cattaneo is known for creating the comedy film The Full Monty, for which he won multiple accolades. Military Wives is another one of his projects that gained recognition.

The Penguin Lessons balances the tricky tonality of a film film rich in comedy and drama, which exists on the shoulders of its leading man, Steve Coogan. To mark the film’s Good Friday release, we had the pleasure of speaking to the man himself, paired with screen legend Jonathan Pryce.
We discuss penguins, naturally, and what it was like to shoot with a real-life animal on set, and what that did to the overall atmosphere of the production. They also speak about the importance of the story being told, and we also ask them about their own experiences with pets. Though more of the cat and dog variety, rather than flightless birds.

An Englishman experiences personal and political changes after adopting a penguin during a turbulent time in Argentina’s history.
The Penguin Lessons is out on April...

Coogan does his best, but there’s a tonal mismatch here: the animal-teaches-lonely-human narrative jars with a depiction of lives in totalitarian Argentina
Here is a well-meaning, awkward tonal jumble of a movie, based on the bestselling memoir by former teacher Tom Michell; it is a quirky true-story heart warmer, in which an adorable penguin is apparently supposed to redeem not merely the human hero’s personal heartbreak but maybe even the agony of Argentina during the 70s junta. It stars Steve Coogan, who has often in the past shown brilliant technique as a straight actor, and in Philomena with Judi Dench proved he is perfectly capable of carrying an un-ironised emotional story. But his performance here is bafflingly underpowered and opaque, as if he is slightly perplexed by the script he’s been given.

From the jaunty opening music and wry delivery of Steve Coogan’s introductory few lines, you'd be forgiven for experiencing a sinking sensation that we're back in whimsical British feel-good film territory: this time, with a cute, waddling bird. Happily, Peter Cattaneo’s new film offers a little more drama and nuance than you might fear, managing real emotion as well as a few laughs from deeply unusual subject matter.
Drawn from a 2015 memoir by Tom Michell, who Steve Coogan plays, this follows a misanthropic teacher who's cruising sourly through life, barely engaging, in an Argentinian boys’ school. Through an odd series of events, he ends up reluctantly adopting a penguin christened Juan Salvador — but he's also on the fringes of Argentina's 1976 military coup, and witnesses a left-leaning acquaintance being ‘disappeared’ by the military police. So it's Dead Poets Society meets I'm Still Here meets… Happy Feet?
Works surprisingly well to soften tough subject matter.

One of the stars from Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 1 has confirmed their status in in Season 2. The first season of Percy Jackson took the world by storm and was hailed by critics and audiences alike as one of the most faithful book adaptations ever. The show earned strong scores of 91% from critics and 79% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, but it wasn’t until shortly after the Season 1 finale that it was renewed for Seasons 2 and 3. Jay Duplass, who plays Hades in Percy Jackson Season 1, Episode 7 “We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of,” recently caught up with People Magazine to talk about his new show Dying For Sex, and he confirmed he will not be in Season 2, but he didn’t rule out a return in the future:

The comedy, about a curmudgeon played by Steve Coogan and his waddling new friend, joins a subgenre of movies from King Kong to John Wick – in which men are emotionally and socially rescued by animals
The penguin at the centre of The Penguin Lessons, a new movie by Peter Cattaneo, is nothing if not hard-working. The film, adapted from the 2015 memoir by Tom Michell, uses the political turmoil of Argentina in 1976 as a backdrop for the personal transformation of an English teacher at a boys’ school. Michell (Steve Coogan) is an idle curmudgeon when he rescues an oil-drenched Magellan penguin from a beach in Uruguay in an attempt to impress an attractive woman. She leaves, but he is stuck with the bird, whom he duly names Juan Salvador, and who thaws him out sufficiently to bond with students and colleagues, process past trauma and rekindle a political idealism.

Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is rightfully regarded as one of the great dark comedies, and one of the first really modern black comedy films. It was pretty shocking 60 years ago, with its dark critique of the military and the President, not to mention its hilarious titular Nazi scientist and the apocalyptic finale. It's morbidly funny to watch as Dr. Strangelove (one of three characters played by the great Peter Sellers) frequently tries to stop his arm from Sieg Heling to "Mein Führer!" It's even more morbid in 2025, though, when the richest man on Earth attends the Presidential Inauguration (after contributing nearly $300 million to its victor) and defiantly gives the Nazi salute on stage — twice. Dr. Strangelove may be more topical than ever, so it's good that there is a new adaptation of the classic Stanley Kubrick film.

In a conversation with uInterview, Steve Coogan shared details from his new movie The Penguin Lessons, which follows a teacher (Coogan) who takes a job in Argentina in 1976 during a time of political upheaval. When he adopts a penguin he finds orphaned on the beach, the events that ensue cause him to have a personal and political awakening. Speculating on what his character learns from the penguin, Coogan told uInterview founder Erik Meers, “Sometimes it’s projection, but there’s something quite zen about penguins. Penguins tend not to suffer from lots of neurological conditions because they’re too busy being penguins – and there might be a lesson there for humanity, and certainly for Tom Michelle, the character I play, so it becomes sort of the catalyst.” The Penguin Lessons is now in theaters.

Who knew that combining a sweet story about an adorable penguin and one about the atrocities of a political uprising in 1976 Argentina could have such charm? “The Penguin Lessons” does just that, thanks to the balancing act of director Peter Cattaneo — and the Magellanic penguins playing Juan Salvador (the bird is named after Jonathan Livingston Seagull).
After Cattaneo was given the script by one of the producers, he went back to its source material, a memoir of the same name by Tom Michell, which was a tale of the unexpected bond between man and penguin in the setting of a British private school in Buenos Aires. “I thought, ‘Wow, you would never come up with this out of thin air if you were told to come up with some ideas for movies,” Cattaneo tells Variety. “I was really intrigued by the tonal challenge of balancing the penguin story, the school story,...

Director Peter Catteneo and screenwriter Jeff Pope's adaptation of Tom Michell's memoir, The Penguin Lessons, stars Steve Coogan as the disillusioned and cynical Englishman, who takes up the position of English teacher at the prestigious St. George's private school in Argentina in 1976.
When a military coup forces the school to temporarily close, Michell travels to neighbouring Uruguay, where he rescues a penguin who he first names Peter, before settling on Juan Salvador. In spite of his initial reluctance to embrace Juan Salvador's affections, this unexpected friend helps him to inspire his students.
When the political tensions penetrate the school's walls, Michell must confront the horrors of authoritarian rule.

Disney’s “Snow White” is sinking fast at the box office, so much so that Amazon MGM’s “A Working Man” has taken No. 1 from it this weekend with a $15.2 million opening from 3,262 theaters compared to a $14.2 million second weekend for the Rachel Zegler-starring remake.
Heading into the weekend, “Snow White” was projected for a second weekend of $16-18 million, with some optimistic projections topping out at $20 million. “A Working Man” was projected for $10-12 million.
Instead, “A Working Man” has nearly matched the $16 million opening of star Jason Statham’s last film, “The Beekeeper” in January 2024. As expected, the film skewed 60% male and, while getting mixed critical reviews, has earned mostly positive reception from audiences with a B on CinemaScore and an 84% overall positive rating on PostTrak.
The film will now try to match the $66.2 million domestic/$162.6 million global total of “The Beekeeper” against its reported $40 million budget produced by Black Bear.

In a surprise win, Jason Statham’s action thriller “A Working Man” topped the box office with $15.2 million in its opening weekend. The film, from “Suicide Squad” director David Ayer and Amazon MGM, knocked down the previous champion, Disney’s “Snow White,” which plummeted by more than 66% in its second outing.
After a sleepy $45 million start, Disney’s live-action remake of the classic fairy tale has dropped to the No. 2 spot with $14.2 million from 4,200 theaters. “Snow White,” starring Rachel Zegler as the eponymous princess and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, has generated $66.8 million domestically and $143.1 million worldwide to date. The tentpole cost above $250 million before factoring in marketing expenses, so “Snow White” needs to show some endurance at the box office to justify its hefty price tag. It’ll face competition for family audiences as the Warner Bros. video game adaptation “A Minecraft Movie” opens next weekend.

"You don't often see penguins in films about human rights abuses," Steve Coogan told Variety, and he's right. The Penguin Lessons operates like it's juggling on a tightrope walk; that's how much of a balancing act the film is. Based on the story of Tom Michel, a teacher at a boarding school over in Argentina during Isabel Perón's right-wing government ahead of the military junta and the Dirty War. The discovery of a tarred penguin leads to changes in his and his school's perspectives. The film exists somewhere between Happy Feet and Life Is Beautiful, and is grounded by Coogan's wonderful performance. Coogan and director Peter Cattaneo spoke with MovieWeb about the penguins and balancing the film's unique tone.
"It was there in the background in the book, but we brought it to the fore. I felt like you had to make it part of the story," said Coogan of...

Penguins are some of the cutest animals in the world, second only to — and I admit that I may be slightly biased — my two cats. Yes, whether penguins are marching, surfing, dancing or trying to blow up Gotham City with rockets strapped to their backs, every movie is better with at least one cute little waterfowl in it. Even a drama about an English teacher fighting fascism in Argentina in the 1970s while learning to love again.
“The Penguin Lessons” stars Steve Coogan as Thomas Michell. He’s a grumpy gus who’s given up on life. He moves into St. George’s, a boarding school for rich children in Argentina in 1976, expecting to coast by with zero effort. He doesn’t even care about the country’s violent political upheaval. When a coup d’état is declared, he’s just happy to get a week off.

He moves into St. George’s, a boarding school for rich children in Argentina in 1976, expecting to coast by with zero effort. He doesn’t even care about the country’s violent political upheaval. When a coup d’état is declared, he’s just happy to get a week off.

This is a nifty indie weekend with a busier and higher profile limited release schedule than we’ve seen in some time. The Ballad of Wallis Island, The Friend, Grand Tour, Viet And Nam, Holy Cow and documentaries The Encampments, which is super timely, and Secret Mall Apartment are peppering theaters in major markets.
Many have festival imprimaturs from Cannes on down and great Rotten Tomatoes critics scores. In moderate release, Sony Pictures Classics is out with Steve Coogan in The Penguin Lessons.
Limited openings: Watermelon Pictures debuts Macklemore-produced The Encampments at the Angelika, which has been adding shows, and the doc looks like it’s heading to a super opening of $70+k at one location. The distributor moved up the release date given the timeliness of the film, which follows students at Columbia University who launched a movement protesting the war in Gaza. It features detained student activist...

Steve Coogan is terrific in true story-based comedy The Penguin Lessons which combines a quirky story about an ex-pat English teacher who accidentally acquires a penguin while teaching in 1970s Argentina, just as a dictatorship takes hold. Directed by the Full Monty’s Peter Cattaneo, The Penguin Lessons has some of that same mix of humor and humanity, in a off-beat tale that starts out comedic but ends up being moving, and saying something significant about people in a changing society.
Are penguins and authoritarianism having a moment? Could be. There was My Penguin Friend, another true story set in South America, about a grieving man whose life is changed when he is befriended by a lost penguin. And there was the Oscar-winning I’M Still Here,...

Actor Steve Coogan ('The Trip') and director Peter Cattaneo ('The Full Monty') join Matt Mahler to discuss their new film, 'The Penguin Lessons.' They touch on the book by Tom Michel, bonding with the two penguins on set, balancing tragedy and comedy, and bringing 'Dr. Strangelove' into the modern world with Coogan's latest stage play. 'The Penguin Lessons' hits theaters on May 28, 2025, from Sony Pictures Classics.
'The Penguin Lessons' is inspired by the true story of a disillusioned Englishman who went to work in a school in Argentina in 1976. Expecting an easy ride, Tom discovers a divided nation and a class of unteachable students. However, after he rescues a penguin from an oil-slicked beach, his life is turned upside-down.

After a lackluster $42 million opening weekend and soft mid-week returns, the outlook is bleak for Disney’s “Snow White.” But despite that, it is expected to hold on to No. 1 even as five wide releases, including Amazon MGM’s “A Working Man” and A24’s “Death of a Unicorn,” are set to hit theaters.
Between Monday and Wednesday, the latest Disney remake grossed $8.6 million, bringing its domestic total to $50.8 million after six days. By comparison, the 2019 remake of “Dumbo,” opened to $45.9 million and grossed $9.8 million in its first Mon.-Wed. period before earning a second weekend total of $18.2 million, a 60% drop from its opening weekend.
“Snow White” should have a similar second weekend total, perhaps doing a little better and cracking $20 million. The one bit of good news for the film is that reception has been strong among family and female audiences, the core audience Disney needs to leg out through spring break.

Why don’t people keep pet penguins? They’re lovely looking birds, personable and affectionate once one gets to know them, and capable of adapting to a wide range of environments. The answer, you will learn here, is that they smell really bad. But that’s just one of the lessons in a film whose story becomes more pertinent by the day. As the US follows certain of its southern neighbours into becoming the kind of place where students are snatched from the streets in broad daylight for expressing non-approved thoughts, the complexities of avian companionship might not seem all that important, but the biggest lesson here is that simple friendship is the starting point for positive change.
Tom Michell, whose real life story the film is based on, and who is played here by Steve Coogan, enters the narrative as a quiet, withdrawn man with little in his life outside of work.
