‘Suits LA’ Canceled By NBC After One Season
Image
Exclusive: It’s one and done for NBC’s legal drama Suits LA headlined by Stephen Amell, a spinoff of the long-running USA Network series Suits.

Given the high-profile IP involved, NBC had high expectations for the series from Suits creator Aaron Korsh. They never materialized: after an Ok premiere, viewership for the offshoot, which airs on Sunday, has remained low.

That is with NBC and Korsh pulling out all the stops and bringing back popular original cast members to play with the new cast. They included Gabriel Macht, who reprised the role of Harvey Specter in a three-episode arc, Rick Hoffman as eccentric Louis Litt in episode 112 and David Costabile as Daniel Hardman in episode 109.

Additionally, in an effort to bring in more eyeballs, NBC staged a Thursday night Suits LA takeover with a three-hour marathon of repeats on March 27.

Suits LA Gets Positive Season 2 Update Amid Low Viewership
Image
NBC isn't ready to close the door on Suits LA just yet. A second season of the Suits spinoff is reportedly still on the table despite the show's lower-than-expected ratings.

Deadline recently reported on the renewal status of NBC's current scripted lineup, which boasts 15 series, two of which (St. Denis Medical and Happy's Place) have only been renewed for next season. While Suits LA has been neither a hit with critics nor in the ratings, Deadline has heard that the network is still considering a second season of the spinoff, likely due to the Suits franchise being a high-profile IP for NBCUniversal.

While it had a devoted fanbase during its nine-season run on the USA Network in the 2010s, Suits became massively popular when it was added to Netflix in 2023, becoming the platform's most-streamed show of the year. This renewed interest in the IP led to NBC ordering the Los Angeles-set spinoff.

These 7 shows pull back the curtain on the madness of Hollywood
Image
From struggling actors to studio execs, these series show the real — and ridiculous — side of showbiz.

No matter where you live, there’s just something about Hollywood that pulls you in. The glitz, the glamour, the drama — and yeah, the dirt underneath it all — it’s always been fascinating. It’s the kind of place where anyone could blow up overnight (or crash just as fast), and that mix of ambition, chaos, and ego makes it perfect TV fodder. With the release of “The Studio,” which follows Seth Rogen as Matt Remick, the newly appointed head of Continental Studios trying to balance his artistic integrity with the Studio’s bottom line, it felt like a great time to recap the other epic series that pull back the curtain on showbiz. So, here are the top seven TV shows about Hollywood you can stream right now.

Exclusive Video: Enrico Colantoni On Playing A Rude Version Of Himself On ‘Suits L.A.’
Image
In a sit-down conversation with uInterview, veteran actor Enrico Colantoni shared details about the experience of portraying a rude version of himself during a guest spot on the legal drama Suits L.A. Asked if he had any trepidation when expressing himself through the character, he told uInterview founder Erik Meers, “Certainly I did. Although, you know, you gotta put the ego aside and forget how people may or may not perceive you, and just reinvest in the fact that, ‘This is me having fun.’ This is certainly a part of me that I don’t get to express, but there’s a part of me that wants to be that guy… I’ve been describing [‘that guy’] as that kid who kicks you in the shin and then runs away, you know, who wants to get away with being a little s— disturber, and then if he gets caught it’s sort of like,...

Suits LA Season 1, Episode 5 Review: Characters Behaving Too Badly
Image
Quick LinksSuits LA Makes Ted Black Genuinely UnlikeableSuits LA Season 1, Episode 5 Surrounds Ted With Thin CharactersSuits LA Throws in Plot Wrenches for Drama's Sake

The following contains major spoilers from Suits LA Season 1, Episode 5, "You're On Your Own," which debuted Sunday, March 23 on NBC. It also contains mild discussion of sexual content.

Suits LA Season 1, Episode 5, "You're On Your Own" is the best example of why the NBC show has divided audiences so deeply. It's not just the natural inclination to compare this spinoff to the original Suits. It's the fact that it's difficult to root for any of the new characters, making this show unfortunately hard to connect to.

"You're On Your Own" revolves around the first day of Lester Thompson's murder trial. Elizabeth Smith's latest underhanded move prompts Ted Black to go on the offensive -- against his former friend Stuart Lane. Meanwhile, Kevin is beginning to doubt Lester's innocence,...

Mother Father Sister Brother Frank (2024)
Mother Father Sister Brother Frank (2024) Movie Ending Explained: Did the Jennings Truly Get Away with Murder?
Mother Father Sister Brother Frank (2024)
A movie title like “Mother Father Sister Brother Frank” (2024) screams absurdity. However, this attention-grabbing title cleverly paints a picture of a perfect family, and how this ‘Frank’ sticks out in conjunction with them. Staying true to the spirit of its title, the film, written and directed by Caden Douglas, is a cleverly crafted dark comedy that ticks all the right boxes. Despite not being entirely unique, the film is a glowing example of blending genres in a zany, absurd, and sharp way.

Mother Father Sister Brother Frank (2024) Movie Synopsis and Plot Summary:

The story starts with a Sunday night dinner at the Jennings household. Jerry (Enrico Colantoni), the father, and Joy (Mindy Cohn), the mother seem to have something important to tell their children. The son, or the titular brother, is Jim (Iain Stewart). He is a gay man struggling with his marriage. Then we have the daughter, or the sister,...

'This Isn't Scathing Enough': Enrico Colantoni on His Wild Suits LA Role
Image
The following contains spoilers for Suits LA Season 1, Episode 4, "Batman Returns," which debuted Sunday, March 16 on NBC.

Enrico Colantoni has been a fan-favorite on TV for decades, whether it's playing Keith Mars in Veronica Mars, the stalwart Greg Parker in Flashpoint or any of his numerous guest appearances. However, his role on Suits LA might have surprised more than a few viewers. In the NBC spinoff's fourth episode, Colantoni played a version of himself... who was arrested for attacking his neighbor's petunias with a chainsaw.

The plot only got stranger from there, not only as audiences found out why the actor had been motivated to do a little gardening, but exactly how he'd done it. Plus, Colantoni ran afoul of Stuart Lane, portrayed by Josh McDermitt. In an interview with Cbr, the English Teacher star gave his thoughts on the storyline, discussed a possible return to the show -- and...

Suits LA Season 1, Episode 4 Review: Harvey Specter Elevates the Spinoff

Quick LinksHarvey Specter's Suits LA Return Is Worth Watching ForSuits LA Season 1, Episode 4 Might Just Have Changed Suits CanonSuits LA Episode 4 Finds a Breakout Moment for Stuart Lane

The following contains major spoilers from Suits LA Season 1, Episode 4, "Batman Returns," which debuted Sunday, March 16 on NBC.

Suits LA Season 1, Episode 4, "Batman Returns" is the episode viewers have been waiting for, because it involves the return of Harvey Specter. In that sense, the episode is worthwhile, because Gabriel Macht's presence immediately takes the NBC spinoff up a notch, and not just because Harvey is a legacy character. In other ways, this already much-publicized event creates more food for thought as the show's storylines are starting to come together.

"Batman Returns" centers around Ted Black and Erica Rollins having to face a new legal wrinkle in the Lester Thompson case: Lester's movie studio wants to bury his film, given all...

'Suits LA' Episode 4 Recap: Harvey Specter Stops By in the Show's Best Installment Yet
Image
Editor's note: The below recap contains spoilers for Suits LA Episode 4.Suits LA has finally figured out its identity crisis, and all it takes is another TV star cameo and Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) to make it happen. Enrico Colantoni shows up in Episode 4 to play a version of himself who's gotten into some legal trouble after carving an anatomically correct penis into his neighbor's hedge with a chainsaw. It's a shocking accusation for a man known for being one of TV's best-ever dads, but it proves that Suits LA can laugh at itself, and make the audience laugh at the same time.

Suits LA: Ted and Harvey Have a Batman-Off — Was Gabriel Macht’s First Episode Worth the Hype?
Image
It’s been almost six years since Suits fans last saw Harvey Specter on screen, and no, those T-Mobile commercials don’t count. But with this Sunday’s episode of the spinoff Suits LA, viewers got a new dose of Gabriel Macht’s charismatic lawyer in a very different context.

Just as creator Aaron Korsh previewed to TVLine, Harvey appeared without any storytelling fanfare during a mid-episode flashback to Ted’s time in New York in 2010, when he was trying to take down mobster Pellegrini. The case was weighing on Ted so much that his pitches kept striking the batter...

'Suits LA' Episode 4 Recap: Harvey's Back in Business
Image
Suits LA finally delivered on what fans have been waiting for, as Gabriel Macht made an appearance as Harvey Specter in the episode "Batman Returns." The appearance connects Suits LA to the original series, Suits, and it's a reason for fans to be excited. Unfortunately, it's one of the only reasons for fans to get excited right now, as "Batman Returns" is a mostly uneventful episode.

The Moment Everyone's Been Waiting For: Harvey Specter's Return

The flashbacks in "Batman Returns" start with Ted Black visiting the diner where his brother, Eddie, works. While there, Pellegrini (the mob boss Ted is trying to take down) approaches Ted, which makes the lawyer worry about his brother's safety. Later, Ted is pitching for softball, and he's off his game. The shortstop on his team approaches the mound, and it's Harvey.

Ted tells Harvey about his ordeal with Pellegrini, so after the game, Ted,...

‘Suits LA’ Creator Says Meta ‘The Office’ Cameo Is Just the Beginning
Image
“Suits LA” went meta for its latest case, which that creator Aaron Korsh hopes will lead to more real-life Hollywood stars popping up on the NBC spinoff series.

Episode 3, titled “He Knew,” follows as Erica (Lex Scott Davis) helps “The Office” star Brian Baumgartner — a client of the firm — with his desire to seek advice on pivoting his acting career from comedy into serious dramatic roles. At the start of the episode he demands the firm set him up with a meeting with Tom Hanks, but both Erica and her assistant Leah (Alice Lee) know they could never make that happen.

Instead, Leah sets up a meeting between the actor behind Kevin Malone and Patton Oswalt, who also plays himself and comes with sage advice for the veteran comedian. The enounter was equal parts earnest and hilarious, as the two actors bickered about their standing in the entertainment business.

Cailtin Cronenberg's 'Humane' is a Streaming Hit, With a Premise That Feels Very Realistic
Image
The debut feature film of Caitlin Cronenberg, daughter of legendary body horror auteur David Cronenberg, is quickly rising on Hulu's charts. Sitting at number three as of this writing, Humane was released in April 2024 but didn't receive much attention at the time. The psychological thriller hit Shudder in July of that year, but still didn't make much of a blip. It seems the underrated film is finally getting its due on Hulu.

Humane takes place in an alternate reality Canada, where the climate crisis has prompted the world's governments to institute a euthanasia campaign in order to rid Earth of 20% of its human population. The narrative centers on the Yorks, an estranged family brought together one evening by patriarch Charles. He has a surprise for his children, one that will lead the night into a terrifying nightmare full of twists and turns.

The film's cast is impressive, with Jay Baruchel,...

Mother Father Sister Brother Frank (2024) Review
Image
Joy and Jerry Jennings (played by Mindy Cohn and Enrico Colantoni respectively) are, as usual, hosting daughter Jolene (Melanie Leishman) and son Jim (Iain Stewart) for Sunday dinner. Recently, it seems like the four are getting together out of duty rather than anything else and this particular meet up is further strained by the fact that all four of them seem to have something they’d rather not tell anyone. Matters are made much worse by the unexpected arrival of Jerry’s brother Frank (an effectively loathsome Juan Chioran), a dreadful bigot with a nasty surprise for his relatives, a surprise which has them contemplating murder…

Writer/director Caden Douglas mixes a bunch of the wholesome with a pinch of the wholly inappropriate, introducing us to a quartet whose outwardly mundane lives cover a series of shambolic decisions which have left them all facing various quandaries, all exacerbated by the...

Mother Father Sister Brother Frank review – frantic night of murder, mayhem and family bonding
Billy Bob Thornton, Colin Hanks, Jason Schwartzman, and Allison Tolman in Fargo (2014)
This tale of nice ordinary folk doing bad things is a cartoonishly grisly comedy with a hint of Fargo, though without the off-kilter humour

The family that eats together stays together, they say. But the proverb will have to be tweaked for director Caden Douglas’s cartoonishly grisly comedy, in which a family’s regular Sunday dinner ends with the neighbour’s dog running around the back garden with a severed human arm clamped between its teeth. You could describe Mother Father Sister Brother Frank as Fargo-esque, in the sense that it’s a tale of nice ordinary folks doing bad stuff while snow falls serenely around them – though in truth it is less flavoursome and the humour is more obvious, not so deliciously off-kilter.

It is lunchtime at the Jennings’ house, where mom Joy (Mindy Cohn) is a picture of homely friendliness. Her husband Jerry (Enrico Colantoni) seems...

Ronda Cooper, Longtime Talent Agent, Dies at 77
Image
Ronda Cooper, who had a long career as a Canadian talent agent, including at The Characters Talent Agency for 35 years, has died. She was 77.

Cooper passed away on Jan. 1 in Toronto after a year-long battle with dementia, Characters agency president Jennifer Goldhar Gossack told The Hollywood Reporter.

Born May 1, 1947 in Toronto, Cooper first aspired to become an actress and studied at York University and then at a drama school in London, England. She returned to Toronto in 1979 and found work as a talent agent at the Penny Noble Talent Agency in her hometown and New York City. In 1986, the Characters agency founder Larry Goldhar was looking for a new agent and client and stage and TV actor Jonathan Welsh recommended Cooper.

On ringing her, Goldhar discovered Cooper had just moved back to Toronto from New York City. The two met together over lunch and a week later Cooper joined Characters.

Taylor Sheridan Appeared in 'Veronica Mars' Way Before 'Yellowstone'
Image
Quick Links Kristen Bell's Career-Defining Crime Mystery Hit Taylor Sheridan Flexes His Acting Chops in 'Veronica Mars'

Taylor Sheridan has steadily become a powerful titan in Hollywood, with the brilliant director, writer, and producer being the mastermind behind a slew of small-screen knockouts, including Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and Lioness. Though he is now celebrated for his exceptional skills behind the camera, having also ventured into the world of filmmaking and penning the screenplays for hits like Sicario and the Oscar-nominated Hell or High Water, many may have forgotten that Sheridan got his start as an actor trying to make it big.

Sheridan began his career back in 1995 with a guest spot in Walker, Texas Ranger, subsequently appearing in shows such as Party of Five, NYPD Blue, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation before landing his breakthrough role in the fan-favorite crime mystery sensation Veronica Mars in 2005. The...

Mother Father Sister Brother Frank Review: A Chaotic Dance of Secrets and Laughter
Image
The Jennings family, a microcosm of suburban life where secrets simmer beneath the surface like a pot on the stove for too long, is introduced to us in Mother, Father, Sister, and Brother Frank.

In this story, the matriarch, Joy (Mindy Cohn), badly wants the family to stay together, so she plans a Sunday dinner that turns into a crucible for suppressed truth. While their father, Jerry (Enrico Colantoni), drowns his worries in wine, her adult children, Jolene (Melanie Leishman) and Jim (Iain Stewart) navigate their labyrinthine struggles.

A chaotic cycle of violence and dark humor is set off by Uncle Frank’s (Juan Chioran’s) arrival, shattering the fragile facade of their family. Frank, a harbinger of trouble, embodies the existential threat that lurks in family ties—the possibility of destruction weaved into the fabric of love.

This film, written and directed by Caden Douglas, emerges from a personal...

5 best FX shows of 2024
Image
It was a great year for FX shows! Over the years, FX has routinely cranked out some of the best shows on TV. That did not change this year.

You can watch each series on Hulu and Disney+ right now.

Let’s get the list of the best FX shows of the year started with the best show on TV all year long, and that’s Shogun!

The Best TV Shows of 2024
Image
With critical and fan favorites like The White Lotus, Stranger Things, and Severance not set to make their return until next year, 2024 was notable for its abundance of new shows. The vast majority of our list of the best TV shows of the year is composed of fresh properties or limited series: Netflix delivered one-off psychosexual thrills with Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer and the more understated neo-noir Ripley, while HBO and FX struck queer comedy gold with the surrealist Fantasmas and the more conventionally sitcom-styled English Teacher, respectively.

Of course, 2024 saw a few holdovers from previous years, two of which—The Bear and True Detective—met with mixed reactions from audiences but rewarded patient observers with their weighty takes on family, community, and the nature of being. And, in its third season, Hacks continued to deftly balance comedy and drama. Next year’s new and returning shows should consider the bar raised.

Stephanie Koenig is always trying to find ‘the most surprising thing’ on ‘English Teacher’ to make you laugh
Image
Stephanie Koenig always knew one aspect of “English Teacher” would work. The FX comedy was created by her Bff Brian Jordan Alvarez, who stars as Evan Marquez, a gay high school English teacher in Austin, Texas. Koenig, who also serves as a writer and story editor, plays Gwen Sanders, Evan’s Bff and a history teacher. “I’d work with Brian previously, so I knew that was going to feel lived-in,” she tells Gold Derby. “We already had chemistry. We’re best friends in real life.”

What surprised her, however, was the immediate chemistry they had with the rest of the cast: Enrico Colantoni, who plays Grant, the principal; Sean Patton, who plays Markie, the gym teacher; and Carmen Christopher, who plays Rick, the counselor. “It was like, ‘Wait, you guys all…'” she continues. “It just felt very lived-in from the start. And I also think there’s also...
