"Witness if you will, a dungeon, made out of mountains, salt flats, and sand that stretch to infinity. The dungeon has an inmate: James A. Corry ... a convicted criminal placed in solitary confinement. Confinement in this case stretches as far as the eye can see, because this particular dungeon is on an asteroid nine million miles from the Earth. Now witness, if you will, a man's mind and body shriveling in the sun, a man dying of loneliness."
These words grace the opening of "The Lonely," the seventh episode in the first season of Rod Serling's anthology series, "The Twilight Zone." "The Lonely" was the first episode to be shot on location once filming for the first season commenced, and the premise of the tale, as narrated above, presented an immediate problem. There was no dearth of actors who could do justice to the soul-crushing exile that James A.

At a time when weird tales were often dismissed by respectable critics — a time in which, sadly, we have never actually stopped living — the anthology series "The Twilight Zone" wasn't just popular, it was widely acclaimed. The show even won three Emmy Awards: two for its creator and writer, Rod Serling, for his many impressive and subversive scripts (Serling wrote 92 of the show's 156 episodes), and one for the show's primary cinematographer, George T. Clemens.
While it's still unusual for media in the weird horror genre to win any mainstream accolades, it's not altogether strange when a popular TV series wins at least some Emmy Awards. It is, however, exceptionally strange when an episode of a television series — any television series — wins an Academy Award. Because, you know, that's an award that specifically exists to honor movies instead of television.
And yet, that's exactly what happened to a "Twilight Zone" episode called.

My favorite episode of "The Twilight Zone" is "The Howling Man." Self-adapted from a short story by Charles Beaumont, the episode's star is David Ellington (H.M. Wynant), an American hiker in post-war Europe. Caught in a storm, he stumbles upon a monastery and meets the secretive Order of Truth, led by Brother Jerome (John Carradine). The Order has the titular man (Robin Hughes) imprisoned in a cell, claiming him to be Satan in human form. After some persuasion from both parties, Ellington ultimately frees the prisoner and all of mankind pays for his mistake.
I discovered the episode when I was a Catholic schoolboy and a burgeoning horror fan, so the premise stirred primal fear within my soul. Even now, with my faith lapsed, "The Howling Man" is still an excellent half-hour of TV, with some of the best atmosphere and mystery in "The Twilight Zone."

Chicago – I know that we’re starting to sound like a broken record here. If you check our coverage of the previous three season sets of “The Twilight Zone,” you’ll see that they’re among the highest-praised ever covered on this site. Guess what? The fourth season doesn’t break the pattern.
Blu-ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
I will say this — the fourth season of “The Twilight Zone” was definitely not the program’s best. Oh, there are certainly some highlights but, taken as a whole, it’s not as strong as any of the first three seasons. There’s your bit of criticism. It will end here.
Season four ran from January to May of 1963 and definitely features a few highlights, if not as many as previous seasons. Notable episodes include “He’s Alive,” “Mute,” and “No Time Like the Past.” One may immediately notice that this season features half the...

“There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition. And it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call The Twilight Zone.”

Chicago – Image Entertainment released a spectacular Blu-ray release in September of “The Twilight Zone: Season 1,” an amazing set that will surely be mentioned when our year-end “Best Blu-rays of the Year” feature debuts in a few weeks. With “The Twilight Zone: Season 2” following quickly on its heels just two months later, the only concern was if they would drop the ball with the second release. Instead they have hit another home run.

Of course, the primary reason to pick up both seasons is the quality of the program itself. It helped shape science fiction of all forms, not just television. It’s one of the most influential programs of all time and most episodes have held up incredibly well. There aren’t many programs from the early ’60s for which a shot-for-shot remake could air in 2010 and still be devastatingly effective. You can say that about...

Hell yeah! The classic Twilight Zone TV series created by the great and imaginative Rod Serling is coming to Blu-ray! This is one of my favorite TV series of all time. Image Entertainment will release the first season on September 14th. They've now issued a full press release officially detailing the release. Check out the full details below.
In 1959, a ground-breaking television series premiered – investigating the futuristic, the telepathic, the cryptic, and the metaphysical: The Twilight Zone. Every week, Rod Serling’s masterwork of “fear noir” took viewers from the safety of their living rooms on amazing journeys of fantasy and imagination. On September 14th, Image Entertainment will release the complete first season of The Twilight Zone, fully remastered for Blu-ray.
