"Bates Motel" Party. Comic Con 2013.
The Wait Movie Ending Explained: What Does Eladio Discover at Don Francisco’s House?
"Bates Motel" Party. Comic Con 2013.
F.Javier Gutierrez’s The Wait is a neo-Western that isn’t content to be just that. The director has several things on his mind. It’s always intriguing to see an artist push at the tropes but there’s equal risk in the venture. Is the director confident to thread together ambitious, restless ideas within the folds of the Western and reframe them on exciting, bold terms? Therein lies the key.

The film hobbles pace by misreading the temperature of a crafty slow-burn. The psychological depth is missing, depriving the film of the complexity that underpins its atmospheric shifts toward horror and unease. Neither is the fascist-ruled setting of Spain in the 90s congruous to establishing a sense of the world the character inhabits. The film is also emotionally one-note.

It drops us into the deeper end of emotional damage without building a due affiliation. There’s deceit, revelations, and...

The Wait Review: A Haunting Allegory of Oppressed Souls
Image
Javier Gutiérrez crafts a gripping tale of loss and guilt in his recent film The Wait. Actor Victor Clavijo stars as Eladio, a poor groundskeeper caring for the vast Andalusian estate of wealthy landowner Don Francisco, played by Pedro Casablanc. Eladio lives there with his wife Marcia, portrayed touchingly by Ruth Diaz, and their young son Floren.

Against the sparse, sun-baked landscapes of rural Spain, Eladio’s life seems to be finding a steady rhythm. However, when he makes a fateful decision that affects both his family and future, tragedy soon strikes and sends Eladio into a downward spiral of grief.

Blending elements of revenge thrillers with supernatural folk horror, Gutierrez also injects thoughtful commentary on societal classes through his story. The isolated setting of the Spanish countryside enhances the looming sense of despair that hangs over the characters. As Eladio grapples with the aftermath of loss, reality itself begins...

The Wait - Jennie Kermode - 19288
"Bates Motel" Party. Comic Con 2013.
Questions of power and responsibility, individuals and systems, civilised values and evolutionary pressures haunt F Javier Gutiérrez’s moody thriller. A festival hit since granted a well-deserved cinematic release, it sets up the ostensibly simple story of a man whose surrender to temptation costs him everything he loves, only to expand into something richer and more complex as additional layers of wrongdoing are revealed and nature itself seems to express its offence at the misdeeds of its human offspring.

That man is Eladio (Victor Clavijo), a hard-working groundskeeper who lives with his wife Marcia (Ruth Díaz), ten-year-old son Floren (Moisés Ruiz) and dog Yulen on the estate of the wealthy Don Francisco (Pedro Casablanc), a figure whom we initially see only in shadow. One day Eladio is approached by another prosperous man, Don Carlos (Manuel Morón), who offers him money to expand the number of hunting stands on the land from ten.

Horror Highlights: Frankenstein’S Monster Statue, The Caretaker, Entity, Screamfest
Image
Sideshow Brings Frankenstein'S Monster To Life: "First brought to life by the words of Mary Shelley, the creation known as Frankenstein’s Monster has taken on many forms throughout popular culture. Inspired by the iconic literary character and his visual legacy across the centuries, the Frankenstein’s Monster Statue by Sideshow honors the creature’s horror roots and tragic nature with a new, original design.

This stunningly detailed, fully sculpted piece shows the hulking figure cloaked in the pelt of a black bear and clad in patchwork pants. Two large electrodes emerge from his back and silver staples hold his reanimated flesh together. He is painted with a cadaverous mixture of yellows and reds, emphasizing how Frankenstein’s creation straddles the line between life and death.

Lurching through a melancholy cemetery scene, Frankenstein’s Monster crosses a snow-dusted grave where a lantern, shovel, and broken skull rest. The headstone...

Fantastic Fest 2023: ‘The Wait’ Review
Image
Stars: Pedro Casablanc, Víctor Clavijo, Ruth Díaz, Moisés Ruiz, Manuel Morón | Written and Directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez

Writer/director F. Javier Gutiérrez returned to his native Spain to make his third film La Espera, or, in English, The Wait. It’s a title that refers not just to the passage of time but to the ten hunting stands on the estate of Don Francisco. They are watched over by Eladio, who lives on the remote property with his wife Marcia, and their son, Floren (Moisés Ruiz).

At the start of the 1973 hunting season, he’s told by Don Carlos, Don Francisco’s right-hand man, to surreptitiously add three more. At first, he refuses, saying that would crowd the hunting parties and be unsafe due to the risk of crossfires. Eventually, he relents, a decision he soon regrets when Floren is killed in a freak accident leading to Marcia’s suicide.

‘The Wait’ Review: A Genre-Jumping Exercise With More Style Than Substance
Image
In his director’s statement for The Wait (La espera), F. Javier Gutiérrez describes his latest feature as a “slow-burn supernatural neo-western set in Spain in the 1970s.” That’s certainly an apt summary, but one that also underscores the movie’s main problem: It’s trying to be too many things at once, and by doing so amounts to less than the sum of its parts.

The Spanish filmmaker’s debut from 2008, Before the Fall, tried to combine a disaster flick with a home-invasion flick, yielding similarly sketchy results. In both cases, Gutiérrez showcases a keen sense of style but an inability, despite all the genre-jumping, to make something that feels truly original. World premiering at Oldenburg, with additional dates set for Sitges and Fantastic Fest, the film could provide decent streaming fodder for fans of international thrillers while finding a small theatrical audience at home in Spain.

During the rather languid opening half-hour,...

New Ving Rhames, Marion Cotillard Films Among Oldenburg 30th Anniversary Lineup
Image
The Oldenburg Film Festival, Germany’s leading all-indie fest, unveiled highlights for its 30th-anniversary edition, including several world premieres featuring Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard and Mission : Impossible star Ving Rhames.

Uppercut, a boxing film featuring Mission: Impossible star Ving Rhames, will close the festival on September 17. Director Torsten Ruether remade his own, German-language, debut Leberhaken, which premiered in Oldenburg in 2021. The Million Dollar Baby-style story sees Rhames as a disillusioned former boxer who gets a shot at redemption when a young woman shows up at his gym, begging him to train her.

Spanish genre director F. Javier Gutierrez will bring his latest horror tale, The Wait, to Oldenburg this year. Gutiérrez’s 2008 debut Before the Fall, an end-of-the-world sci-fi thriller, was a cross-over hit, and his follow-up was the big-budget Rings (2017) for Paramount, the third entry in the Japanese-inspired horror saga. But the film, despite grossing $83 million worldwide, was...

A couple months ago, we shared some first look images from The Wait, the latest film from F. Javier Gutiérrez, the director of the apocalyptic drama Before the Fall and Rings, a 2017 sequel to the 2002 horror remake The Ring. Daniela Fejerman and Elvira Lindo’s “Someone Who Takes Care of Me,” a celebration of actors, their passion, craft and historical legacy, opened this year’s Malaga Film Festival in a fitting tribute to the Spanish entertainment industry.

The film, which screened out of competition, centers on three women whose careers have spanned stage, film and television, actresses of different generations whose fortunes in life have greatly differed and who struggle with untold secrets and unresolved conflicts.

Aura Garrido stars as Nora, a young, award-winning actress with a promising future who carefully balances between the two main pillars in her life, her grandmother Lilith (Magüi Mira), who reigned for decades as a renowned theater star, and her mother Cecilia (Emma Suárez), whose career has languished after having achieved some glory in the 1980s, a decade of excess in which she heavily partook.

Luke Evans to Star in The Crow Reboot
So many names have been tossed around over the years for The Crow reboot, but news started to pick up over the last few weeks. You may have heard rumors of Tom Hiddleston and Alexander Skarsgard, but someone else is going to be playing Eric Draven. According to Deadline, Luke Evans is currently in negotiations to start in Relativity’s remake of The Crow.

Evans was previously seen in The Raven and Immortals, and recently signed on for Universal’s new Dracula movie. Before he appears in Dracula, we’ll see him as the villain in Fast & Furious 6 this summer. Apparently, Evans has been the first choice for the role, but his busy schedule was causing conflicts. In order to accommodate his schedule, the movie will not begin filming until next year.

Back in January, 2012, Relativity Media announced that F. Javier Gutiérre would direct the movie and Jesse Wigutow would write the script.

F. Javier Gutiérrez To Direct The Crow Reboot
Yesterday we reported that The Crow reboot was moving forward. Relativity Media decided to play nice and dropped it's lawsuit against The Weinstein Company. Comingsoon is reporting that it has found a director in F. Javier Gutiérrez (Before the Fall) and a writer in Jesse Wigutow. Here is the press release with all the details: Relativity Media’s Co-President, Tucker Tooley, Edward R. Pressman, producer behind the cult-classic The Crow franchise, and The Weinstein Company’s Dimension Films, announced today they have closed a deal with F.
