‘Friendship’ Skyrockets To Top Limited Opening Of 2025 For Tim Robinson, Paul Rudd Comedy — Specialty Box Office
Image
Friendship is out at 6 locations to a stellar debut weekend of $451k, and per theater average of $75.43k. That’s the highest limited opening this year and a boost the indie market’s been waiting for even as the broader box office picks up.

Only Watermelon Pictures’ documentary The Encampments, which debuted on one screen in late March to $77k, had a higher per theater opening of $77k.

R-rated comedy Friendship stars Tim Robinson as suburban dad Craig, whose life is turned upside down by the arrival of a new neighbor (Paul Rudd). As Craig’s attempts to make an adult male friend, things spiral out of control, and their blossoming relationship threatens to ruin both of their lives. The TIFF-premiering film saw dozens of sellouts in both New York and Los Angeles with raucous crowds and great word-of-mouth. Fans of Tim Robinson and his Netflix series I Think You...

Patricia Clarkson Shows What a Great Actor She Is in ‘Lilly,’ a Whistleblower Drama for Our Time
Image
Patricia Clarkson is an actor who always hits the true note, but it’s been quite a while since she nabbed a movie role as full-scale and invigorating as the one she has in “Lilly.” The movie, which opened yesterday, is a whistleblower drama, based on the life of Lilly Ledbetter, who was the image of a homespun citizen — an Alabama wife and mother working as a supervisor at the local Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company plant — when she became an activist almost in spite of herself.

At Goodyear, Ledbetter started out in 1979 slinging tires on the factory floor. She then climbed the managerial ladder, only to keep getting knocked back down. Her work record was top drawer, but she was the only supervisor at the plant who was a woman, and that made a lot of people around her nervous. Near the end of her 20 years there, she learned she...

‘Lilly’ Is a Movie for Our Mothers: Complicated, Devoted, Fearless | Guest Column
Image
Mother’s Day is a complicated holiday for me. It’s the day my mother died 11 years ago. It’s also the weekend that “Lilly,” the first feature film I’ve written and directed, will be released in theaters across the county. Filled with these dichotomous emotions, I find a meaningful thread of resilience woven between them, one that has shaped my own life and is at the heart of the story of the film.

“Lilly,” starring Patricia Clarkson, is based on the life of Lilly Ledbetter, a woman known for the extraordinary achievement of becoming the voice of fair pay, of having President Obama honor her struggle by naming his first piece of legislation after her. She was a woman who dedicated her life to making the world a better place for the rest of us. She was also a mother and grandmother – and the daughter of a complicated mother.

The Oscar-nominated actor talks about her new role playing equal pay advocate Lilly Ledbetter and why the Trump administration should be careful

Patricia Clarkson, who portrays late equal pay activist Lilly Ledbetter in a biopic released this week, has a wish.

The Oscar-nominated actor hopes her fellow American women collectively withhold sex from their partners – especially men in power – if the second Trump administration’s assault on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives ever takes aim at the gains won by the subject of her new film.

Patricia Clarkson Was 'Afraid' of How Jessica Biel Would React After She Complimented Justin Timberlake's Manhood
Image
Patricia Clarkson is impressed by Justin Timberlake for more than just his vocal skills.

The 65-year-old actress revisited a past comment that she made about the “SexyBack” singer’s manhood on a recent interview with Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.

“I was doing Friends With Benefits and I had to walk in on him and Mila Kunis. I walked in and he was nude. I saw everything and he is really gifted,” she said, per Us Weekly.

When asked why she didn’t request a “muffin basket” from Justin for the positive exposure, Patricia explained that she was worried about how his wife Jessica Biel would react.

Keep reading to find out more…

“I was afraid I would hear from his wife. I wanted it very clear that I just looked, I didn’t touch. I didn’t hear from anyone. Now I’m angry,” she said with a chuckle.

Lilly Review: Patricia Clarkson Anchors a Rushed Biopic
Image
Rachel Feldman’s Lilly (2024) unfolds a distinctly American saga—Lilly Ledbetter’s legal crusade against Goodyear for pay equity—yet it resonates well beyond U.S. borders. Co‑written with Adam Prince, this 93‑minute feature places Patricia Clarkson at its center, channeling Ledbetter’s quiet determination as she moves from a 1979 factory floor to the halls of the Supreme Court.

From the opening reenactment of Ledbetter’s 2008 Democratic Convention address, the film weaves together dramatized scenes and archival footage, prominently featuring clips of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. This hybrid approach—equal parts narrative and documentary—mirrors techniques found in global art‑house cinema, where historical realism is often punctuated by reflexive commentary. The grayscale-to-color shift, triggered by Ledbetter’s first meeting with her lawyer, Jon Goldfarb, evokes visual signaling strategies seen in European political dramas, yet here it underscores the personal stakes of a legal battle rooted in regional labor culture.

Patricia Clarkson Reveals She Once Had a Hollywood Meeting With a ‘Very Big, Famous’ Man Who Greeted Her in a Towel
Image
Patricia Clarkson shared Wednesday a series of Hollywood experiences she had early in her career with sexual harassment, including one instance where she had a meeting with a “very big, famous person, and he came out in a towel.”

“I was just like, ‘Ok!’ He goes, ‘Oh, I was just working out, I’m going to put some clothes on.’ I said, ‘Yes, please do!’” the Oscar-nominated actress said on “The Kelly Clarkson” show while promoting her new film, “Lilly.”

The other instance involved a producer who offered to hold her hand through an intimate scene after she declined to take an acting job due its required nudity.

“I was offered a part, and it had nudity, and I just was just out of school and I was like, ‘I don’t really want to be naked,’ and the producer literally said to me, ‘Well, when you’re doing the nudity,...

Patricia Clarkson Recalls Harvey Weinstein Telling Her She’d “Never Work Again”

More than 20 years later, Patricia Clarkson is recounting her unfortunate experience with Harvey Weinstein.

The Oscar nominee explained that the disgraced producer tried to submit her at the 76th Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress, despite her lead role in Miramax‘s 2003 film The Station Agent.

“I hate when actors put themselves in false categories. I think that’s something that needs to be addressed by the Academy. Too often it happens,” she told Business Insider. “When you are supporting, you should be truly a supporting player, and when you’re the lead, you have to step up and go into a harder category. I was the lead in Station Agent, so I said, ‘No, Harvey, I’m not going into supporting.'”

That same year, she received a Supporting Actress nod for her performance in the United Artists film Pieces of April. “I’m definitely supporting in that. Katie Holmes...

Liam Neeson's First Major Action Movie Was A Clint Eastwood Flick
Image
Don Siegel's 1971 film "Dirty Harry" was written partly as a protest against the then-new Miranda Laws, passed by the Supreme Court decision Miranda v. Arizona in 1966. The film is about a grizzled San Francisco super-cop, Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood), on the trail of a serial killer nicknamed Scorpio (Andrew Robinson), modeled after the real-life Zodiac killer. Callahan was frustrated because he knew Scorpio was guilty, but he was using the auspices of "prisoner's rights" to flaunt the system and stay free. Callahan would need to go rogue to apprehend him.

Perhaps because of its topicality -- but likely because of its hard-boiled tone and memorable "gruff" lead character -- "Dirty Harry" was a gigantic hit, making $36 million on a $4 million budget. The character was indelible enough to return for multiple sequels over the years, each time pushing Callahan into a scenario wherein he would need to go rogue to...

This Free-to-Stream and Wildly Underrated Stephen King Remake Was Almost A Full TV Series
Image
Last week, our Managing Editor Josh Korngut penned my favorite editorial of the year thus far. Responding to the recent news of Mike Flanagan’s new take on Stephen King’s Carrie, Korngut questions why fidelity to the source material never translates one of the text’s most pointed descriptions—Carrie’s appearance. Carrie White, as written, is a fat girl, though the many adaptations on stage and screen never seem to care all that much. Flanagan’s take is poised to repeat the same depiction we’ve always seen when his limited series for Prime Video arrives next year.

What’s most interesting is just how regularly Carrie has been adapted. There’s Brian De Palma’s original, of course, and the much-better-than-you-remember sequel. Kimberly Peirce helmed a remake in 2013, though the less said about that film, the better. And then there’s an oft-forgotten 2002 adaptation. Written by Bryan Fuller...

Why Starring In ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ Makes Ilana Glazer Want to Watch More CNN
Image
Ilana Glazer spent several years wanting to do a Broadway play, but never elevated the thought to a formal goal. The logistics involved — eight shows a week, working (almost) every night — seemed unreasonable. “The time and the money just don’t add up for a working mom,” she says. And then, last September, Grant Heslov and George Clooney asked her to participate in a two-day workshop for their forthcoming adaptation of their 2005 film Good Night, and Good Luck. The experience, and the opportunity therein, was (finally) rich enough to justify the potential scheduling downsides. “In my mind, and in my husband’s mind, too, it was going to feed our family system in the long term,” adds Glazer. “It’s worth the time away.”

Now, the Broad City creator has made her Broadway debut in the play (of the same name) as Shirley Wershba, whom she describes as one of...

Mike Flanagan's Carrie series eyes Chucky star for lead role
Image
Mike Flanagan has his hands full with Stephen King adaptations between his upcoming movie The Life of Chuck and the two he has in development: Carrie and The Dark Tower. We don't have much new info about The Dark Tower yet, but a new exclusive from Variety suggests casting has found its Carrie White in Child's Play star Summer H. Howell.

The outlet says a deal is close to being finalized, though none of the people directly involved have responded to requests for comment.

Flanagan's take on Carrie has been in development since October 2024. Amazon hasn't formally ordered the show into a series, but if Howell is cast, then an official pickup is likely to follow. The series is based on King's iconic 1974 novel, most famously adapted for the Oscar-nominated 1976 movie starring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.

Howell is a 20-year-old actress who has already appeared in several genre films and horror projects,...

Patricia Clarkson Transforms Into Equal Pay Icon Lilly Ledbetter for Biopic ‘Lilly’ — Watch Trailer
Image
Patricia Clarkson has played sinners, saints, and now, the singularly most impactful equal pay activist, Lilly Ledbetter.

Clarkson leads eponymous biopic “Lilly” about the hard-working Alabama tire factory supervisor whose goal was to lift her impoverished family into the middle class. As Lilly endures harassment in her work environment for the sake of the best paycheck in her county, she later realizes that she has been duped — and paid significantly less than her male counterparts — just as her retirement approaches. Lilly earned less than half of what her male colleagues received for 20 years, and she begins a historic fight toward justice to remedy the sexist practice.

As the official synopsis teases, Lilly “discovers that the system has been cheating her, paying her close to half of what the men with the same job were earning. Outraged, Lilly fights this injustice to the Supreme Court, the corridors of Congress, and eventually...

'The Green Mile' is a Streaming Hit on Tubi
Image
The Green Mile, a supernatural prison drama from 1999, is finding new life on the free streaming service Tubi. The Stephen King adaptation stars Tom Hanks in one of his genuinely underrated performances. The film currently sits at the third spot on Tubi's Top 10 list of the service's most-watched films.

Written and directed by Frank Darabont, The Green Mile follows a group of prison guards working at the Cold Mountain Penitentiary death row, or as everyone calls it, "The Green Mile." Led by Officer Paul Edgecomb (Hanks), the group receives John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a new inmate who has been sentenced to death for a horrible crime. Coffey doesn't behave like a murderer and claims that he's innocent. Edgecomb eventually realizes that the convict even possesses an extraordinary power to heal people. But we'll leave it at that for those who still haven't seen this classic, as we'd rather not spoil it for you.

‘Lilly’ Review: Equal-Pay Activist and Trailblazer Lilly Ledbetter Deserves a Much Better Film
Image
It’s ordinary people, and not superheroes, who bring about justice and change in the real world. In “Lilly,” writer-director Rachel Feldman follows the era-defining work of one such everyday woman: trailblazer Lilly Ledbetter, a pioneer from humble beginnings who took her employer, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., to court on the basis of gendered pay discrimination. But while Ledbetter’s contributions toward the fight for equal pay are immortalized with the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 (which essentially states that each unfair paycheck starts a new cycle of discrimination), her legacy sadly doesn’t receive the polished and sophisticated treatment that it deserves in “Lilly,” a puzzling film that can’t decide what it wants to be.

The unfortunate inelegance of Feldman’s film announces itself right at the start, as the movie struggles to establish its tone as a narrative feature that heavily leans into documentary footage.

10 TV Shows That Would Have Worked Better As Movies
Image
In the era of streaming, the lines have continued to blur between movies and TV shows, meaning that some shows feel like they would be much better as movies. There used to be a clear delineation between the two media, but TV trends have dictated that shows should have higher production values, fewer serialized stories and more varied directorial choices. All of these elements are inherently cinematic.

When a new trailer drops on social media, it's sometimes unclear whether the project being sold is a movie or a TV show. This highlights how the two art forms have continued to merge and overlap. Miniseries are even more cinematic than most other TV shows, and many big hits would be even better if they had made a few more cuts to the story and been envisioned as movies instead.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure's Ending Explained
Image
The Maze Runner: The Death Cure ending brings the trilogy of dystopian YA movies based on James Dashner's novels to a close, though it wasn't always obvious how the various plot threads running through the franchise connected for the finale. Even though the Maze Runner 3 ending explained a lot, it also left behind several questions. The Death Cure is the third and final installment in 20th Century's Maze Runner movie franchise. It follows 2014’s first film and the 2015 sequel Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, wrapping up the stories of Thomas, Newt, and Minho, and their fight against Wckd.

The third movie in the series, based on James Dashner's 2011 novel The Death Cure, arrived in 2018. While the final movie tied up several plot threads, the Maze Runner ending still warrants further explanation, as some of the conclusions in its multi-layered story aren't quite clear on first viewing. Maze Runner: The Death Cure...

Kevin Costner's The Untouchables Is Now Streaming, And It's Still One Of The Best Movies (& Casts) Of His Entire Career
Image
Kevin Costner's 1987 historical crime drama The Untouchables is now streaming, and both the movie itself and its cast are still a highlight of the actor's career. The Untouchables follows the true story of Elliott Ness (Kevin Costner) and his team of "untouchable" - in the sense they couldn't be bribed - police officers as they try to take down notorious Chicago gangster Al Capone. Al Capone was a notorious bootlegger who illegally brought alcohol into the United States during Prohibition, and Ness eventually arrested him for tax evasion. The road to get there, however, was paved with blood, bullets, and more than a few bodies.

Now, The Untouchables is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Its new streaming home could mean that people who have never seen the movie before will finally get to experience one of Kevin Costner's best movies, as well as one of the best...

Shutter Island (2010) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
It’s always interesting to see big time directors go against type and into a genre we don’t necessarily associate them with. We have Mount Rushmore type horror directors like John Carpenter and Wes Craven giving us thoughtful entries into their catalogues like Starman and Music of the Heart. On the flip side of that, what happens when a director known for Oscar worthy drama, gangster, and period piece movies goes all in on a scary movie? How did that movie miss out on any major awards nominations even with it being considered prestige horror? How many different adaptations of Denis Lehane’s novel would we get? Take the boat over before the storm hits as we find out what happened to Shutter Island.

Denis Lehane is an American author who began writing in the early 1990s. While he had success with a series of novels with repeating characters early,...

Bobby Cannavale Recalls Studios Wanting To Recast Peter Dinklage in Their Award-Winning 2003 Film
Image
Two decades after its theatrical release, Bobby Cannavale revisits the path that led to creating the critically acclaimed film The Station Agent. During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Cannavale reveals that the creation of The Station Agent lingered for four years, primarily due to Peter Dinklage's casting.

Written and directed by Tom McCarthy (in his feature directorial debut), The Station Agent centers on Dinklage's Finbar McBride, a man with dwarfism who inherits an abandoned train station in a small New Jersey town. There, he meets Joe Oramas (Cannavale), a hot dog vendor, and Olivia Harris (Patricia Clarkson), an artist, and the three develop a close friendship. At the time, Dinklage wasn't an "A-list-type" actor, so studios were looking to recast him; according to Cannavale, studios also wanted to do away with one of the film's central points: Fin's dwarfism.

"I remember everything about that movie, because it took forever to get made,...

Every Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry Movie, Ranked
Image
Clint Eastwood has been many things throughout his remarkable career: one of the most legendary cowboys of all time, one of Hollywood's most prolific directors, and also one of the silver screen's most iconic antiheroes, squinting, grimacing, and grinding his teeth through five performances as the San Francisco cop who plays by his own set of rules, "Dirty" Harry Callahan.

From 1971 to 1988, Clint Eastwood wrestled with the ever-changing American sociopolitical scene in real-time as one of cinema's most controversial (and beloved) characters. The Dirty Harry franchise has since come to be defined by the reactionary nature of its central premise. However, the further the franchise moved away from its first entry, the more interesting things got in terms of hot-button issues and Dirty Harry's response to them. Ultimately, Dirty Harry never evolved into anything much more than a cool-headed modern-day gun-slinger, but that's what continues to make these movies so damn entertaining to watch,...
