Exclusive: Starzplay, the international streaming service from Starz that is now in close to 60 countries, is joining forces with Sony Pictures Television (Spt) on a premium scripted series about the life and reign of Spain’s controversial former king Juan Carlos I.
XRey comes from Golden Globe and Emmy-winning producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa (Homeland) via their overall deal with Spt. Glenn Geller, president of their production company, will executive produce alongside the pair. Also onboard to develop the project is Spanish production company Weekend Studio.
The multi-lingual series will chronicle how the Spanish king’s popular 40-year reign came to an abrupt end when he suddenly abdicated in 2014. He cited personal reasons as the motivation behind his decision but has since faced allegations of corruption.

Dentsu Aegis Network-owned The Story Lab is working with Weekend Studio on the adaptation after XRey has been among Spotify’s top three podcasts in Spain since premiering on May 19.
King Juan Carlos I abdicated in 2014 in sudden and unexplained circumstances and 10-part XRey features testimony from prime ministers, leading historians and investigative journalists. It is produced by Toni Garrido.

Netflix is doubling down on Spanish-language originals with heroin drama Hache.
The Svod service has ordered the eight-part thriller, which stars Adriana Ugarte (Palmeras En La Nieve) and Javier Rey (Fariña) from fledgling Spanish production company Weekend Studio, the company set up by director Tomás Cimadevilla and Canal+ Spain exec Jorge Iglesias.
The drama, which was created by Cuéntame and El Príncipe writer Verónica Fernández and is based on a true story. It tells the story of Helena, played by Ugarte, a woman catapulted to the heroin trafficking business in the Barcelona of the 60s.

Santiago De Compostela, Spain — Continuing its push to produce local content in Spain, Netflix has announced the commission of new original series “Hache,” created and written by “Velvet Collection” scribe Verónica Fernández.
Her 2001 feature “El Bola” earned the writer a Spanish Academy Goya nomination for best original screenplay.
The series’ eight hour-long episodes are based on real events surrounding Helena, a woman at the heart of 1960s heroin trafficking in Barcelona. Helena will be played by Goya-nominated actress Adriana Ugarte, joined on screen by Javier Rey, who this year took home the best actor award at Malaga Film Festival for his performance in “Sin Fin.”
The series is scheduled for release in more than 190 territories in 2019.

This film has also been called Game of Werewolves and Lobos de Arga. If one directly translates the Spanish title into English, then it becomes the much simpler Werewolves of Arga. This final title is less than stellar, though. This review will call this picture Attack of the Werewolves, which is the United Kingdom title. Attack of the Werewolves is a Spanish language film and an entertaining one at that. This title blends horror elements with comedy. So, the tone of the film is light-hearted. The American Film Market is continuing to provide sneak peaks at upcoming horror and thriller titles. The latest to debut at this film event is titled Afterparty. This is a Spanish language film. It focuses on a group of friends who are just waking from a wild night out. They find themselves trapped in a "sinister house" (Afm). Now, they have no way out and the walls are closing in. The first film poster is here and this title will show at the Afm November 2nd and 5th. The graphic promises a killer with a knife and a group of unsuspecting victims. More blood reds are sure to follow. A trailer will be released soon, but, for now, an early movie still is hosted below. Afterparty is sure to bring some sexy thrills!
