Anora Oscar-winner Mikey Madison has found her next project, and it's certainly an unexpected choice.
Madison, who also played one of Scream 5's Ghostfaces, has landed the lead role in Reptilia alongside Spider-Man star Kirsten Dunst... who is set to play mermaid.
The movie "tells the story of a dental hygienist who is seduced by a mysterious mermaid into the dark and wet underworld of Florida’s exotic animal trade." Alejandro Landes Echavarría, who helmed acclaimed hostage drama Monos, will direct from a script by Landes Echavarría and Duke Merriman. Imperative Entertainment, Pastel and Af Films are set to produce, along with Landes Echavarría under his A Stela Cine banner.
That's pretty much all we have to go on for the time being, but this is an intriguing premise, and the script was clearly strong enough to pique Madison's interest. The 25-year-old has had her choice of roles since...

Mikey Madison is setting up her first post-Oscar role as she’s set to star in Reptilia, a new feature from Alejandro Landes Echavarría (Monos). Kirsten Dunst will co-star in the movie about a dental hygienist who is seduced by a mysterious mermaid into the dark and wet underworld of Florida’s exotic animal trade. The movie is based on a script by Landes Echavarría and Duke Merriman. It will be introduced to international buyers at the Cannes market by Charades. Principal photography will commence this fall.

Madison almost certainly had her pick of projects after winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for Anora, and Reptilia sounds like an interesting choice.
She’s had offers for much bigger projects, including Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars movie starring Ryan Gosling.

Netflix‘s April film acquisitions include masterpieces from some of the most revered Hollywood directors of the past 50 years, including Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese and Michael Mann. Whether you are in the mood for Nolan’s best superhero film or Mann’s greatest crime thriller, Netflix has whatever its subscribers may be looking for in April. That is to say nothing, either, of the pair of timeless sports dramas that the streaming service also added to its platform this month.
Here are TheWrap’s picks for the seven best movies that have started streaming on Netflix in April.
“The Dark Knight” (Warner Bros. Pictures) “The Dark Knight” (2008)
Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” is still considered by many to be the peak of the superhero genre, and for good reason. Nolan’s 2008 sequel to 2005’s “Batman Begins” is a propulsive, gripping crime thriller that doubles as a battle of wills...

It wouldn’t be “Scary Movie” without the Wayans brothers.
When Jonathan Glickman took over as head of Miramax a year ago, the studio was struggling to reboot the franchise. Glickman knew that a successful relaunch required one essential ingredient — the involvement of Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans and Keenen Ivory Wayans, the siblings who gave those popular comedies their subversive spark.
“You need to have some connective tissue with the original property,” Glickman says. “It gives legitimacy to a project so it doesn’t seem like just a cash grab.”
But getting the Wayanses wasn’t easy. The brothers believed that Harvey and Bob Weinstein, the bullying, bare-knuckle and (in the case of Harvey) disgraced founders of Miramax, had given them a “crappy” deal on the first film in the series, released in 2000, then “stole” their idea. By the time the third, fourth and fifth “Scary Movie” hit theaters, the Wayanses were no longer involved.

When Marvel Studios held its chair-tastic cast reveal event for the upcoming event film Avengers: Doomsday, fans were surprised to see Channing Tatum’s name among the bunch. Tatum plays the kinetic card-dealing Cajun Gambit in Marvel’s Deadpool and Wolverine, and the thought of him returning for Doomsday is an exciting prospect. However, while speaking with ExtraTV, Tatum said something that has fans thinking he could play another character in the ambitious superhero saga.
“Personally, all I was guaranteed was a chair,” Tatum told the outlet. “They said that I have a chair, and I can at least watch the movie from the chair. You know, and it was just my name, it wasn’t exactly Gambit. So, I work in the world of just like, of binary yes or no’s, and I’ve only been guaranteed so far a chair to watch the movie in, so that’s where I’m at.

Universal Pictures owns the rights to some of the most iconic villains, which the studio named the "Universal Monsters." However, it has yet to find its rhythm with the recent adaptations.
Universal was planning to launch the Dark Universe, which was set to debut with 2017's The Mummy, and create an McU-like joint universe that would feature characters like Wolf Man, Dracula, The Invisible Man, and more. However, following the release of The Mummy and its poor reception, Universal canceled the universe. Leigh Whannell later revived the plans following the success of his 2020's The Invisible Man, and returned to the universe with 2025's Wolf Man. Following a disappointing box office run, Wolf Man will be heading on streaming on Apr. 18 on Peacock.

After joining the MCU, creating a film production empire, and closing out his iconic tenure as “Magic Mike,” Channing Tatum is making yet another career pivot: leading legendary indie director Derek Cianfrance’s latest feature, “Roofman.”
Tatum stars as the titular vigilante who lived in a Toys ’R’ Us store and broke into more than 60 McDonald’s, emptying cash registers after herding staffs into freezers. The Roofman robber became an urban myth, and now it’s Tatum’s turn to bring his story to the screen. Tatum onstage at CinemaCon teased the footage and called him the “unusually polite” robber and said Cianfrance’s film is “equal parts devastatingly emotional but also hilarious.”
The trailer that was shown at CinemaCon described the film as “based on a true story *as told by a liar.” Tatum’s character explains that after escaping from prison, running as far away as possible doesn’t work.

While speculation over who will play the next James Bond rages on, things are coming together behind the camera for the next and 26th installment in the 007 franchise. Recently, producers David Heyman and Amy Pascal have been eyed to produce the new film, but no official announcements can be made until the paperwork is finished regarding the $1 billion buyout of Barbara Broccoli's Bond rights. The Sun claims that writers have already been hired, but again, there hasn't been an announcement. Likewise, no announcement can be made regarding the director of the next film, but it's said that Edward Berger and Alfonso Cuarón are in the running. Now, Matthew Belloni of Puck said on The Town podcast that he predicts Cuarón will get the gig, which would be his first film in seven years and follow his Apple TV+ series Disclaimer.
"It's an informed, speculative pick," said Belloni. "And it is not Chris Nolan.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes’true love first blossomed poetically on screen. Gosling often defines his performances through understatement, from a vintage heartthrob in The Notebook to a brooding protector in what this author thinks is the best film ever, Drive, while still featuring in blockbusters like the pink phenomenon, Barbie. Mendes, now happily embracing the beauty of motherhood and entrepreneurship, also dedicated herself to acting, delving into roles like the complicated mistress of Denzel Washington's character in Training Day to a cynical gossip columnist in Hitch, showing she also had the range to tackle both dramatic and comedic contexts.
However, there’s a strong case that their finest work came when they shared the screen in the same movie: Derek Cianfrance's 2012 morality tale The Place Beyond the Pines. The ambitious, multi-generational film brought the couple together off-screen while testing the actors with roles that demanded intensity. It’s hard to believe now but before taking 12 long years to follow 1987’s Full Metal Jacket with Eyes Wide Shut in 1999, the famously meticulous Stanley Kubrick was comparatively prolific — in the ’60s alone he released four of his 13 features. In these days of instant gratification, a director taking longer than three years is either deemed to be M.I.A. or about to pop up with a secret film made entirely under the radar. But absence does make the heart grow fonder, and these five directors can expect a warm welcome in 2025.

There are probably a lot of people who go up to an NYU film professor’s lectern on the first day and tell them that they want to be a filmmaker. Inbal Weinberg is maybe one of the few who has gone up and said, “I want to be a production designer.”
In a time before places like Interior and Films or One Perfect Shot spotlighted how design and composition affect film audiences — to say nothing of Google Search’s ability to find examples of production design in the space of a few seconds — Weinberg knew in her bones that the visual worldbuilding organized by the production designer was how she could help tell stories. Looking back now on her career of over 20 years and collaborations with everyone from Derek Cianfrance and Maggie Gyllenhaal to Pedro Almodóvar and Luca Guadagnino, she’s done exactly what she set out to do.

Duke Johnson is making his solo directing debut with the highly-anticipated noir, “The Actor.”
Johnson reunites with his “Anomalisa” co-director Charlie Kaufman to executive produce “The Actor,” which stars André Holland as a man who realizes he has no idea what his true identity is after surviving a brutal attack in 1950s Ohio. Johnson co-wrote the script with Stephen Cooney, which is based on the novel “Memory” by Donald E. Westlake.
The official synopsis reads: “Paul Cole (Holland) is stranded in a mysterious small town with no memory of who he is or how he got here. Without a sense of identity or purpose, he starts from scratch and begins courting a local costume designer Edna (Gemma Chan). As bits and pieces of his past slowly emerge, he attempts to find his way home, but time is slippery, appearances can’t be trusted, and it’s unclear which of his identities is real.

Universal Monsters has proven to be a rocky IP, as Universal has struggled to find a winning formula. Following the success of 2020's The Invisible Man, a partnership with Blumhouse, the two teamed up again with Leigh Whannell for Wolf Man.
Whannell's new attempt at a Universal Monster had all the right ingredients for a second success. Unfortunately, Wolf Man ended up leaving the box office with its tail between its legs after taking a hit from the critics. After a release in theaters on Jan. 15, Universal is already sending the horror on streaming. Wolf Man will be available to rent or own on digital starting Feb. 4 on all PVOD platforms.

The reboot of the classic Universal Monsters property The Wolf Man from Blumhouse Productions and The Invisible Man (2020) director Leigh Whannell reached theatres last month – and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray wasn’t very impressed with it, giving it a 6/10 review that you can read Here and describing it as “well-acted, but not very scary.” Clearly, he wasn’t the only one who was unimpressed. While The Invisible Man made over $139 million at the global box office, Wolf Man has been crawling toward the $30 million mark. Now, it has been revealed that Wolf Man is set to receive a digital release tomorrow, February 4th, with a physical media release to follow on March 18th.

Why Did Ryan Gosling & Michelle Williams’ Blue Valentine Scene Spark Controversy? (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
Ryan Gosling didn’t just act in Blue Valentine; he stirred up a storm. The indie drama pushed boundaries with its raw portrayal of intimacy, but one scene, in particular, made waves. The moment Ryan goes down on Michelle sparked controversy, debates, and an Nc-17 rating before it was adjusted to R.
For Gosling, the backlash made no sense. In an interview with The Guardian, he broke it down. “The s** felt real—it wasn’t s**y or ‘a s** scene,’ and that’s why we got into trouble. You shouldn’t be penalized for doing a good job.” His frustration was clear. Hollywood had no problem with over-the-top violence, but an emotionally charged moment between two characters? That was somehow too much.
Michelle Williams stood by the scene, calling it a landmark moment in cinema.

After starring in a bunch of films and gaining a reputation in the industry, most actors tend to venture towards something more, like becoming a producer or director. Even Eva Mendes tried the same, after becoming an A-lister in Hollywood. But she soon realized that producing projects is not everybody’s cup of tea.

Director Leigh Whannell gave the classic Universal Monsters a shot of modern life in 2020 with his thrilling new take on "The Invisible Man." In the aftermath of that success, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse set about reinventing another monster in the form of the Wolfman. Originally, Oscar-nominee Ryan Gosling ("Barbie") was set to star in "Wolf Man" that had director Cory Finley ("Bad Education") flirting with the director's chair before Derek Cianfrance ("Blue Valentine") came on board. Things changed a lot along the way, with Whannell ultimately settling into the director's chair. But why did Gosling drop out?
Gosling is still credited on "Wolf Man" as a producer, for what it's worth. Yet, he doesn't appear on screen. Instead, Christopher Abbott stars as Blake, the ill-fated man who becomes a werewolf. In a recent interview with CinemaBlend timed to the film's release, Whannell explained that the film didn't change a lot once Abbott took over.

Horror fans were very excited when it was announced that Leigh Whannell had stepped in to replace the departing Derek Cianfrance as director on Universal/Blumhouse's Wolf Man reboot, since the filmmaker had previously delivered his own take on another classic Universal Monster which proved to be a big critical and commercial hit.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Whannell is going to be able to repeat The Invisible Man's success.
Wolf Man arrived in theaters on Friday amid mostly negative reviews (it currently sits at 54% on Rotten Tomatoes), and the movie has now come in well below its already modest opening weekend box office estimates.
The downbeat werewolf flick was on track for a $17M-$21M bow, but only managed to take in $10.6M over three days (analysts believe it'll hit $12M by Monday).
It's worth noting that Wolf Man did have a relatively low production budget of $25 million,...

Wolf Man has been long in development. Unfortunately, the new take on the popular Universal Monsters character is not a big hit with the audiences.
Leigh Whannell successfully rebooted The Invisible Man five years ago, and he joined his second Universal Monsters project in 2020. Due to scheduling, he departed the project to focus on other films, he returned in 2023 after Derek Cianfrance and Ryan Gosling left the project. Unfortunately, the film was not a huge hit and, after a disappointing Rotten Tomatoes score, Wolf Man debuted with a C- score on CinemaScore.

It’s been said that all monster movies fit into at least one of three categories. Werewolf movies play on the notion that within every man lives a beast waiting to be unleashed. Vampire films tap into our collective fear of the unknown, which can encompass everything from the threat of disease to the perception of strangers as potential predators. And Frankenstein stories explore the risks when man plays God, creating life and facing the consequences.
Blumhouse’s shrewd 2020 reboot of the classic Universal horror film “The Invisible Man” cleverly played off the latter two, as Elisabeth Moss embodied a woman trying to escape an abusive relationship with a mad scientist. Directed by Leigh Whannell, the low-budget thriller was so successful that Universal rushed to adapt other titles from its classic monsters catalog, imagining a “Dark Universe” series that would update — and eventually connect — them all.

Universal and Blumhouse’s “Wolf Man” reboot and the Keke Palmer-led comedy “One of Them Days” will contend for the top slot on box office charts over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
Regardless of which lands in first, neither are expected to break out in what’s shaping up to be another quiet weekend for North American cinemas. “Wolf Man” is poised to open to $17 million to $21 million from 3,300 venues over the four-day frame, while “One of Them Days” looks to collect $8 million to $13 million from 2,650 theaters between Friday and Monday.
Universal and Sony each canceled the premieres of “Wolf Man” and “One of Them Days” due to the fires and extreme winds in Los Angeles. In terms of moviegoing, though, attendance doesn’t appear to be affected by the devastating wildfires that continued to ravage though parts of Los Angeles, one of the biggest theatrical markets in the country.

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling’s relationship has undoubtedly been one of the very few long-standing marriages in Hollywood. Believe it or not, director Derek Cianfrance had a major role to play in their romance. While it certainly required Gosling to ask out and propose to Mendes, it was Cianfrance’s decision that turned the co-stars into real-life lovers.

On Falling, the debut feature from Laura Carreira is among the titles set to feature as part of the Ingmar Bergman Competition at this year’s Göteborg Film Festival.
On Falling follows Aurora, a young Portuguese woman who struggles to make ends meet across one week in her adopted home of Glasgow, Scotland. Long days spent grabbing packages off shelves for an anonymous e-commerce giant barely cover the bills and leave her exhausted and desperate for something more. Per the synopsis: Aurora seeks to resist the loneliness, alienation, and ensuing small talk that begin to threaten her sense of self. Set against a landscape dominated by an algorithm-driven gig economy, designed to keep us apart. The film was produced by Jack Thomas-o’Brien of Sixteen Films alongside the Portuguese-based Bro Cinema. Backers include BBC Film, BFI, and Screen Scotland. Conic will release the pic in UK cinemas in early 2025.

There was a moment when “The Brutalist” could have gone into theaters unrated. It’s not like it hasn’t happened before this year — thank you, “Terrifier 3,” for opening in more than 2,500 theaters unrated and ultimately grossing over $53 million stateside — and the choice only would have fueled the publicity around the Brady Corbet-directed movie, were it to enter theaters sans the MPA imprimatur. Or, the theatrical kiss of death, an Nc-17, eliminating play from most major exhibition chains.
An unrated release looked possible, at least, when the full trailer premiered online December 10, less than two weeks out from opening, without the MPA seal. Sources told IndieWire that A24 was prepared to release the film unrated, while another said that the MPA just hadn’t screened the film until late last week. “The Brutalist,” IndieWire can confirm, ultimately received an R rating this week for “strong sexual content, graphic nudity,...

Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams lived together for Blue Valentine ( Photo Credit – Prime Video )
Director Derek Cianfrance took it to the next level, telling Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling to move in together for a month in the same house where their characters lived. Yeah, you heard that right. They spent a whole month playing house, doing the everyday stuff—except it wasn’t just pretend. It was about making their broken marriage feel as accurate as possible.
The movie charts the rise and fall of a relationship, and Cianfrance split the shoot into three parts. First, the love. Then came the chaos. And in between, he told Williams and Gosling to move in together (with the young actress who played their daughter). The catch? They had to live in the same house where their characters lived. During the day, they played house—shopping for groceries, decorating for fake holidays,...
