A Sequel to Disney’s $256 Million Hit Just Became a Lot More Possible Thanks to New Comments From John Leguizamo
Image
Encanto is still waiting for its sequel, as despite its success, a new installment has yet to be officially announced by Disney. However, John Leguizamo has hinted that Encanto 2 may be closer to happening than fans might realize.

Leguizamo discussed the possible sequel in a new interview with People at the opening night for the Buena Vista Social Club. He shared how he's just as eager as the fans to see Encanto get a sequel, though he has the advantage of knowing the decision makers. Leguizamo teased that he's been personally badging the Encanto team about getting progress moving on a follow-up film, sharing a promising update on the movie finally happening.

"I'm also waiting for an Encanto 2 when all we do is talk about Bruno," Leguizamo quipped, referring to "We Don't Talk About Bruno," the popular song featured in the film. "I'm calling them everyday saying 'When is number two coming?...

The Most Heartbreaking Kids’ Movies of the 2020s, Ranked
Image
While a lot of filmmakers are focused on making the next cult classic, kids' movies are still a massive part of this lucrative industry. Not only do they allow children to soar off into an imaginary world, but these films are a great resource for teaching them about empathy and growth. Thus, without them, fans wouldn't have the same respect and admiration for the film world.

Yet, since 2020, fans have noticed that kids' films are getting sadder and sadder. Whether it's the death of a beloved character or a broken dream, these films manage to tug on the heartstrings of children and adults alike. However, audiences appreciate these films as they don't make an effort to pander or talk down to their immature audiences.

Encanto's Sequel Chances Addressed by Disney Director
Image
An Encanto sequel remains a possibility at Disney. Jared Bush, who co-directed the 2021 animated movie and was recently appointed as the new Cco of Walt Disney Animation Studios, has addressed whether fans can expect to see a return to the world of Encanto in the future.

Per Fiction Horizon, Bush shared at D23 Brazil that Encanto remained "a film that is kept in my heart," adding that he loves "all the characters of the Madrigal family." While he tiptoed around confirming a new Encanto project, he seemed to hint that something may be in the works. "Ill say, without revealing too much, that I would love to spend more time in the Madrigal House and return to Encanto. I hope that one day it will be possible," he added.

10 Movies That Should Be Adapted Into Broadway Shows
Image
In recent years, the theatre world has witnessed a massive influx of Broadway shows based on films. Stage adaptations of Hollywood hits like Back to the Future, Moulin Rouge, and Beetlejuice have been dominating Broadway, both in terms of ticket sales and critical reception. Even lesser-known works, like the 2007 Israeli film, The Bands Visit, have been brought to the stage, and even gone on to win the coveted Tony Award for Best Musical. Now, with the massive success of these adaptations, audiences must begin to wonder what films may be getting reborn on the stage next.

Of course, not every major motion picture can be seamlessly translated to a different medium. Big-budget films that rely on complex visual effects and numerous locations are often impossible to properly convey on stage. However, films that rely on only a handful of characters within a relatively contained setting typically have excellent potential when...

Chile’s Juntos Films and two of Colombia’s more renowned actors, Angie Cepeda (“Rebellion”) and Juan Pablo Raba (“Narcos”), are boarding drama “Domestic Animals” by Colombian director Rafael Martínez Moreno, which participates in the Santiago Film Festival’s Sanfic Fiction Lab.

Juntos Films joins Ivan Luna and Diana Pérez Mejia of Colombia’s Ferviente Films in adapting the eponymous original story by Antonio Garcia Angel, who co-wrote the screenplay with Diego Cañizal (Spain) and Juliana Ospina (Colombia).

In “Domestic Animals,” Felicidad, a 55-year-old domestic worker in Miami, works for the Ibarra family, who appear perfect but harbor dark secrets. As she becomes part of their luxurious world, she witnesses the collapse of the marriage between Guillermo (Raba), an investor, and Claudia (Cepeda), a former beauty queen. Feeling increasingly distant from her love interest, Luis, Felicidad realizes she’s trapped in a facade, much like the neglected fish she cares for in the glass mansion.

8 Animated Disney Films That Need Sequels After The Moana 2 Announcement
Image
Disney should consider making sequels to beloved animated films like Tangled and Big Hero 6. Wall-e, with its environmental message and lovable characters, would be a great candidate for a sequel. Coco and Raya and the Last Dragon, both praised for their representation and unique storytelling, should also be considered for sequels.

Following the announcement of Moana 2, it's worth considering what other Disney animated films that need a sequel. Taking many by surprise, Disney confirmed Moana 2 is happening, a highly anticipated follow-up to the original, which was released in 2016. Audiences will be able to return to Motunui and reacquaint themselves with Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) and Maui (Dwayne Johnson), and while that's exciting, other beloved Disney characters also deserve another chance on the silver screen.

The animated Disney movies have become a genre of their own with almost every animated feature released by the studio becoming an instant classic.

Why Subtle Encanto Scene Is One Of The Disney Movie's Most Impressive Explained By VFX Artists
Image
The scene between Mirabel and Antonio under the bed in Encanto is simple yet impressive, with animator Dave Hardin making the character's movements appear natural. While some scenes in Encanto may be more visually spectacular, the quieter moments like Mirabel's conversation with Antonio should not be overlooked. The attention to detail in the animation of Encanto, even in subtler moments, demonstrates the skill and effort involved in creating the movie's visuals.

VFX artists explain what makes a subtle Encanto scene one of the movie's most impressive. The animated film tracks the efforts of 15-year-old Mirabel Madrigal to save her family when the source of their magic suddenly begins to disappear. Encanto's popularity grew following its Disney+ release, and since then, the movie has been praised for its story, depicting a multigenerational household, as well as its soundtrack. The cast of Encanto includes Stephanie Beatriz, María Cecilia Botero, John Leguizamo,...

Image
Encanto became a success story for Disney and although there have been hints of the possibility of a sequel, nothing has been confirmed yet.

In a recent interview, producer Yvett Merino hinted that Disney is working on ways to “expand across the company.”

“There’s different—we’re working closely with our friends in publishing and consumer products to make sure—there’s always different ideas and needs and wants for, for it to stay alive out there,” Merino said in an interview with The Direct. “But I don’t have anything official to say, but I love the ‘Encanto’ world and can’t wait to see it expand across the company.”

Although Merino didn’t delve into the idea of a direct sequel to the animated film, she did say that the parent company wants to keep the world of Encanto alive.

“I think we will continue to work on what that actually means.

How ‘Encanto: Live at the Hollywood Bowl’ Came Together in 72 Hours
Image
Transforming Disney’s award-winning animated feature “Encanto” into a live experience at the Hollywood Bowl in front of an audience of 17,000 people was no easy feat, with factors such as the pandemic, limited access to the venue and unexpected weather conditions all in play. But the production team, cast and crew pulled it off in under 72 hours, delivering a Broadway-quality experience.

Unlike a Broadway show, the original voice cast, scores of dancers and production team did not have the luxury of rehearsing at the Bowl. Gabe Turner, executive producer of the event, said, “We could only gain access to the Bowl for four days before we were due to welcome our dancers, orchestra and cast into the space.”

“This meant we really only had 72 hours where we had everyone in the same place, rehearsing and stepping through numbers before we were due to open doors,” said producer Sally Wood.

Why Bruno’s Vision Cave Collapsed Explained By Encanto Director
Image
Encanto director Jared Bush explains why the vision cave in Bruno Madrigal's Casita room collapsed following Mirabel Madigal's visit in a recent Twitter response. John Leguizamo starred as the Madrigal family member gifted with the power to see into the future in Disney's 2021 animated hit. In Encanto, the seemingly ordinary Mirabel Madrigal (Stephanie Beatriz) embarks on a quest to discover why the magic that helped create her family's enchanted home and gifted them with spectacular powers has suddenly begun to decline, setting her on a journey that sees her delving deeper into the lives and histories of her loved ones to find the answers she seeks.

Through his Twitter account, Bush held a Q&a session and offered solutions to Encanto's potential plot holes, during which he was asked why Bruno's vision cave collapsed once Mirabel discovered his final vision. In response, the director stated that he saw the sequence...

Disney's Encanto At The Hollywood Bowl Concert Is Coming To Disney+ In December
Image
The Hollywood Bowl can be a magical place. Set in the Hollywood Hills, this giant amphitheater that opened in 1929 seats 17,500 people. They host countless musical acts, but one of the big draws is when a live orchestra plays along with a popular film. The LA Philharmonic recently performed alongside an "Amadeus" showing, and "The Nightmare Before Christmas" with live music is one of the venue's hottest tickets. Now Disney is bringing the Academy Award-winning film "Encanto" to the Bowl with the original voice cast.

Not everyone can get to Los Angeles, of course, but Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream the special. The concert will happen over two nights on November 11 and 12, 2022, and will be available to stream at the end of the year.

That's not a bad deal! As cool as the event space is, this means you won't have to deal with the insane traffic, parking nightmares...

Joe Arroyo Salsa Biopic Goes to Latido (Exclusive)
Image
“Rebellion,” from José Luis Rugeles whose “Alias María” competed at Cannes Un Certain Regard and was Colombia’s Oscar entry, has been acquired for international sales by Latido Films.

Latido will be bringing the title onto the market at Toronto.

In the film, Rugeles takes a non-linear approach to the narrative drifting through moments in Arroyo’s life and psyche from childhood through to the end of his life. “Rebellion” explores memory, addiction and Arroyo’s deep connection to the composition of song.

It shows the birth of legendary melodies being recorded obsessively by Arroyo into multiple tape recorders as he layers ideas upon each other. These fragments infiltrate the soundtrack throughout, at times bursting into full band performances of Arroyo’s famous songs. The authenticity of the music is aided by some of the musicians involved having played with Arroyo.

Lead producer Federico Durán of Rhayuela said: “When we...

Oscars 2022: The Best Parties, From Start to Finish (Photos)
Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, Daniel Durant, and Emilia Jones in CODA (2021)
Academy Awards Week began with a celebration of Black women’s achievements in Hollywood and crescendoed with “The Slap Heard Round the World” as one Black man sucker slapped another during the broadcast and women lost ground in the never-ending battle for equality. There were some strides, as “Coda,” a female-directed-and-written film took Best Picture and Jane Campion snagged Best Director (the third woman in 94 years) for “The Power of the Dog,” but the talk of every after-party on Sunday night wasn’t celebrating those achievements; instead, every conversation was about the two famous men and the one famous woman at the center of the storm.

But Hollywood’s return to the party swirl had plenty of glitz and glamour as the week unfolded – and lots of love, too, overriding that violent interlude seen around the world. Here are some photo memories of the best, which happened with pandemic vaccination protocols still in place,...

Encanto Review
Wilmer Valderrama, Angie Cepeda, María Cecilia Botero, Carolina Gaitan, Stephanie Beatriz, Diane Guerrero, Adassa, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Rhenzy Feliz, Jess Darrow, and Mauro Castillo in Encanto (2021)
Once upon a time, Disney ventured to the mountains of Columbia to tell a fable so farfetched that one might be mistaken for doubting the claims that this feature didn’t spring fully formed from a fairytale. Encanto is the story of a 15-year-old girl who loves her family and wholeheartedly celebrates their talents while living without a gift of her own; the tall tale of a selfless teen!

Mirabel Madrigal (Stephanie Beatriz) is one of The Magical Madrigals, a celebrated family who live in an enchanted casita at the heart of a verdant Columbian valley where a miraculous new home for a displaced mother and her babies sprang up in the shadow of tragedy and its next generation are using their blessings to serve the town beyond the casita walls.

Mirabel’s Abuela Alma (María Cecilia Botero) takes great pride in her family’s extraordinary talents and their lives of service.

‘Encanto’ Review: Disney’s Lush and Lovely Animated Fairy Tale, Fueled by a Tasty Batch of Lin-Manuel Miranda Songs
Image
“Encanto” is a lively, lovely, lushly enveloping digitally animated musical fairy tale. It’s the 60th animated feature produced by the Walt Disney company, and to borrow a phrase from the old Disney TV series, it’s set in a wonderful world of color — a rapturously imagined, rainbow-gorgeous village tucked inside the misty green mountains of Colombia, where the members of the Madrigal family lead a magical existence. The ornate designer tiles of La Casa Madrigal, their idyllic mansion, turn into a synchronized army of domestic helpers, and each family member is endowed with his or her own superhuman gift. Actually, one of them has no gift. That would be the heroine, Mirabel (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz), who is just like us — which means, within her family, that she’s the odd girl out.

Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard (the co-writer and co-director of “Zootopia”), with Charise Castro Smith as co-director,...

Official Trailer for 'Encanto' - Disney's Magical Adventure in Colombia
Wilmer Valderrama, Angie Cepeda, María Cecilia Botero, Carolina Gaitan, Stephanie Beatriz, Diane Guerrero, Adassa, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Rhenzy Feliz, Jess Darrow, and Mauro Castillo in Encanto (2021)
"This is my chance! I will save the magic! Wait... how do I save the magic?" Disney has unveiled a new full-length official trailer for Encanto, an original Disney Animation project arriving in theaters in November. Encanto is made by the directors of Zootopia, Byron Howard & Jared Bush, and is also co-written and co-directed by Charise Castro Smith. One other teaser trailer debuted earlier in the summer. The animated adventure centers on a young Colombian girl who, in spite of coming from a magical family, lacks magical powers. It will also feature music written by the very talented Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is writing music for so many movies these days. The voice cast features Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel Madrigal, and she's joined by Diane Guerrero, Wilmer Valderrama, Angie Cepeda, Rhenzy Feliz, Carolina Gaitan, and Jessica Darrow. Looks good! Joyously colorful, lots of Colombian culture, and a story about a family.

The film about Afro-Colombian salsa icon Joe Arroyo is directed by Jose Luis Rugeles, whose previous drama “Alias María,” about a pregnant 13-year-old member of a guerrilla unit, competed in the 2015 Cannes Un Certain Regard sidebar and represented Colombia at the 89th Academy Awards.

“Rebellion’s” compelling soundtrack, produced by Alacran Records and recorded at Alacran Studios in Miami, will feature a new single cover of his biggest hit, the titular “Rebellion,” by popular Colombian hip hop band, ChocQuibTown. Its lead singer Gloria “Goyo” Martínez will sing the anthem, marking the first time a woman sings it. Soundtrack and single will be released in time for the film’s world premiere next year. Rugeles will also helm the track’s music video,...

What is your gift? Dazzling new trailer drops for Disney’s ‘Encanto’
Stephanie Beatriz
Disney has debuted the first trailer for the upcoming animation ‘Encanto.’

In the film, the magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal—every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

The all-new original film features the voice of Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel, an ordinary 15-year-old who’s struggling to find her place in her family. “Mirabel is a really funny, loving character who also deeply yearns for something more,” says Beatriz. “She’s also not afraid to stand up for what she knows is right—something I love and relate to very much.

“I’m Colombian on my father’s side, and playing this role fills me with immense pride,...

‘Room 104’ Review: Season 3 Is HBO’s Best Argument For Total Creative Freedom
One of TV’s biggest potential selling points in its current state is Total Creative Freedom. The extent to which that’s a reality for anyone outside showrunner auteurs commanding nine-figure development deals is suspect, but there’s an ever-growing mythos around television as a place where creative ambitions face fewer speedbumps. Since its inception two years ago, the HBO anthology series “Room 104” has been one of the best-case scenarios of this lack of constraint.

Still, even as episodes flit around between genres and a bevy of different creative voices, the show is working within one of the wildest restrictions of any show on TV: staging every episode inside an unassuming motel room. In the show’s Season 3, debuting Friday night on HBO, “Room 104” goes to its greatest lengths yet to ensure that none of these dozen new episodes feel like what the show has done before.

Even as...

‘Room 104’ Season 3 Gets September Premiere Date On HBO
HBO has set Friday, September 13 for the 12-episode third season of its late-night, comedy anthology series Room 104, from Jay and Mark Duplass.

Room 104 tells unique and unexpected tales of the characters who pass through a single room of a typical American chain motel. While the room stays the same, every episode of the series features a different story, with the tone, plot, characters, and even the time period, changing with each installment.

Tapping into a variety of genres, from dark comedy to poignant drama to musical romance, the stories and characters featured in season 3 include: a man searching for a cure to his chronic skin condition; the caretaker of an exotic animal looking to make a sale; estranged siblings reuniting to make an investment; and more.

Season 3 cast includes Luke Wilson, Christine Woods, Eric Edelstein, Robert Longstreet, Dale Dickey, Tom Woodruff Jr., Arturo Castro,...

Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Roma’ Nabs Nine Nominations for 6th Premios Platino
Marina de Tavira, Marco Graf, Yalitza Aparicio, Daniela Demesa, Diego Cortina Autrey, and Carlos Peralta in Roma (2018)
As was widely anticipated, Alfonso Cuaron’s triple Oscar-winning “Roma” dominated the 6th Premios Platino nominations, unveiled Thursday at Hollywood’s legendary Roosevelt Hotel, the site of the very first Oscars. It snagged a total of nine nominations, including best film, director, art direction, cinematography, and acting for its two Oscar-nominated actresses, Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira.

“Roma,” which won Mexico’s first best foreign-language film Oscar, is up against pics that were also submitted for their respective countries in the Academy Awards’ foreign-language category: Colombia’s “Pajaros de Verano,” Uruguay’s “La Noche de 12 Años,” and Spain’s “Campeones.” The first two titles nabbed six Premios Platino noms each while “Campeones” took five. Paraguay’s Oscar submission “Las Herederas” took five nominations.

The ceremony streamed live on Facebook with Premios Platino ambassador and CNN Español journalist Juan Carlos Arciniegas hosting the event alongside actors Joaquin Cosio, Angie Cepeda,...

‘Embrace of the Serpent’ Co-Writer Jacques Toulemonde Shifts Gears on Digital Series ‘Camionero’
Nilbio Torres in Embrace of the Serpent (2015)
Colombian writer-director Jacques Toulemonde, best known for co-writing that country’s 2016 Oscar nominee “Embrace of the Serpent,” is in France at this week’s Canneseries Digital event to compete with his new short-form series “Camionero” at Canneseries Digital, a short-format web series strand.

Colombia’s Evidencia Films and Vivendi’s Studio Plus produced the series, which is a departure from Toulemonde’s more recent dramatic work. In addition the “Embrace” co-scribe, he also wrote and directed 2015’s “Anna,” his debut feature, which scored nominations at the Goya, Fenix and Platino awards.

“Camionero” follows Abelardo, a Colombian truck driver and recovering drug addict, as he makes one bad decision after another, all in hopes of throwing a quinceañera party for his daughter that will put all the other quinciñeras to shame.

As costs pile up, Abelardo is forced to take a job he had hoped never to do, driving a trailer...

Dispatch from the La Film Festival 2015: ‘The Vanished Elephant (El elefante desaparecido)’
From the very opening, we are warned that this is a film of doubling and illusion. A car slowly pulls up and to a stop in a nighttime Lima street, but we gradually realise that we are observing the scene through a large window, with the street and headlamps subtly reflecting and shifting in the pulled focus. It turns out that this sequence – man with gun stealthily enters house – forms the final chapter of Edo Celeste’s latest in a long line of successful detective novels, and he is composing it as we watch, before deleting it in disgust at his reliance on cliche – a black cat. It also turns out that later on Edo himself will repeat the exact same actions, via the same shots, trying to find the woman who can help him find the mysterious man who has posed for a photographic project depicting his works’ hero,...

Wild Horses Trailer: Robert Duvall Directs James Franco in Western Crime Drama
The first Wild Horses trailer for the new film from writer/director Robert Duvall has been released online. Duvall stars in the cowboy crime drama as a Texas Ranger compelled to reopen a 15-year-old missing persons case, while also contending with this relationship with his son, played by James Franco. This is Duvall’s first directorial effort since 2002’s Assassination Tango, and it doesn’t look half bad. Of course the most striking thing about it is Franco’s “Southern” accent, which is pretty great/terrible. He likely didn't have ample time to prepare, seeing as how he's also busy prepping/writing/directing/starring in 74 other movies at the same time. Watch the Wild Horses trailer below, via Yahoo! Movies. The film also stars Josh Hartnett, Angie Cepeda, and Jim Parrack and will be available in theaters and VOD on June 15th.

Exclusive Interview With Robert Duvall On Wild Horses
In Robert Duvall’s latest western, Wild Horses, he stars as an old rancher who once kicked his son off his property for being gay and now finds himself at the center of a missing person investigation. In addition to starring, Duvall directed a cast that includes James Franco and Josh Hartnett.

While Duvall was in Austin at SXSW to promote the film, we had a chance to sit down with the Oscar-winner. We talked about why this project spoke to him, working on a small budget, and using actual Texas rangers in the production. Check out the full interview below!

What was it about this movie that made you want to direct it?

Duvall: Well, not a lot in the beginning. The script we got was pretty unshootable. We took it, I took the option. I wanted to do it because I wanted to have a lady ranger in...

'Wild Horses' (2015) Movie Review
There's a twinge of activism amid the threads of Robert Duvall's latest directorial effort Wild Horses. Although a traditional crime story, Duvall slightly subverts this simple approach, casting himself as a man confronted with a lifestyle he doesn't quite understand, exploring an ideological message rather unexpected for a film like this. It's an interesting choice and potentially effective one. Unfortunately, it's packaged in a middling, mediocre framework that's inert almost from the word "go". The film opens with Scott Briggs (Duvall), a ranch owner, finding his son, Ben (James Franco), fooling around with another man in their barn. He ultimately chases the kid off and we flash forward fifteen years to learn the young man Briggs chased off that night actually disappeared. The police never found a body or a suspect. Now, Samantha Payne (Luciana Duvall), a Texas ranger, has decided to reopen the case. She suspects the missing...

A Night In Old Mexico Review [SXSW 2014]
An early draft of A Night In Old Mexico was written by Lonesome Dove scribe Bill Wittliff about 35 years ago, and for the last 25 years he had been waiting for the chance to get his film made. Under the direction of Emilio Aragon, the long wait is now over. While I’m not sure how many changes were made to that original script, it’s safe to say that the timeless story feels just as fresh today as it would’ve if it had been made in the ’80s, the ’90s, or any other decade for that matter.

Red Bovie (Robert Duvall) is a rancher who’s lost everything. Years ago his wife and son ran away, and his cattle have all died. He can’t afford to keep his land either, meaning he’s lost the last thing he had to call his own. He’s planning to move...

Neighbors, Faults, We’ll Never Have Paris, Creep & Open Windows Lead SXSW 2014 Film Line-Up
After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.

The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.

Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.

David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.
