DreamWorks Animation’s How To Train Your Dragon 2 took Best Animated Feature top honors at the 42nd Annual Annie Awards held Saturday, January 31 at UCLA’s Royce Hall.

The film, produced by Bonnie Arnold, also won Outstanding Achievement, Character Animation in a Feature Production – Fabio Lignini, Outstanding Achievement, Directing – Dean DeBlois, Outstanding Achievement, Music in an Animated Feature – John Powell, Jónsi, Outstanding Achievement, Storyboarding – Truong “Tron” Son Mai, Outstanding Achievement, Editorial in an Animated Feature Film – John K. Carr.

The 42nd Annual Annie Awards were handed out on a busy Saturday night in the awards world and "How To Train Your Dragon 2" was the big winner. The DreamWorks Animation blockbuster (it's true) took home six Annies including Best Animated Feature and Directing (Dean DeBlois). While the entire Academy votes on the Best Animated Feature category, this endorsement from the animation community can't hurt in a very competitive year. Other big winners included "The Simpsons," Amazon's "Tumble Leaf" and Oscar frontrunner "Feast" for the Best Animated Short Subject honor. "The Boxtrolls'" Sir Ben Kingsley took home the award for Voice Acting in an Animated Feature Production and Phil Lord and Christoper Miller won for Writing in an Animated Feature for "The Lego Movie." Yay! One of my favorite animated films of 2014 topped the recently announced 2014 Annie Awards honoring excellence in the field of animation. Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi's "The Boxtrolls" received 12 nominations including Best Animated Feature. Monday morning, the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood, announced nominations today for its 42nd Annual Annie Awards, recognizing the year’s best in the field of animation. Leading the pack with 13 nominations, including a nod for Best Animated Feature, is Laika Animation's "The Boxtrolls." Dreamworks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon 2" followed with 10 nominations, joining "Boxtrolls" in the Character Animation, Animation Effects, and Best Feature categories. Rounding out the organization's big prize are "Big Hero 6" (seven nominations), "Cheatin'" (three), "Song of the Sea" (seven), "The Book of Life" (five), "The Lego Movie" (six), and "The Tale of Kaguya" (three). The Annies cover 36 categories and include Best Animated Feature, Best Animated Special Production, Commercials, Short Subjects and Outstanding Individual Achievements. John Dykstra, the visual effects supervisor for “X-Men: First Class,” may soon have the title of director under his sleeve. According to a new report, he might get behind the camera for a movie based on Jeff Lemire's “Tales From the Farm.”

Variety has indicated that the film is set to be re-titled “Super Zero," and a screenplay has already been written by John Carr, with Alec Chorches and Steven Gilder attached to produce. The movie will be live action, but it will use some visual effects, too.

The producers plan to push the film heavily at this year's Comic-Con International in San Diego.

While Dykstra hasn’t directed a feature film thus far, he has been a second unit director, and he’s won a pair of Oscars for his visual effects work in 1978's “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" and 2005's "Spider-Man 2."

John Dykstra, the visual effects master who helped “X-Men: First Class” open to $56 million dollars this weekend, has just announced his plans to step into the director’s chair. The Hollywood veteran has been working for almost 40 years, and has created dazzling visuals for films like “Star Wars: Episode IV” and “Spider-Man 2,” both of which he won Oscars for. According to Variety, Dykstra’s first feature will be “Super Zero,” based on the graphic novel “Tales from the Farm” by Jeff Lemire. For any film fan even vaguely interested in the technology and craft of filmmaking, the name John Dykstra should need no introduction. He got started with Silent Running, had a major credit on Star Wars, and was a key participant in the development the Dykstraflex motion-controlled camera system, which made possible many of the complex Star Wars special effects. John Dykstra doesn't actually have a great many film credits -- far fewer than you'd expect from someone who began working in the early '70s -- but now he is set to direct his first film. Super Zero will be based on the graphic novel Tales From the Farm, the first in Jeff Lemire's set of Essex County stories, and the project is expected to make its first big showing next month at Comic Con. Variety [1] says that John Carr has scripted the film based on Jeff Lemire's graphic novel.

Visual effects supervisor John Dykstra has set up his first feature film directing gig called Super Zero, which is an adaptation of the comic book Essex Country: Tales from the Farm. Dykstra most recently worked on the film X-Men: First Class, which was a pretty incredible movie for those of you who haven't seen it yet.

Tales of the Farm was created by Jeff Lemire, and was adapted into screenplay form by John Carr. The film will be shot live action, but will include heavy special effects sequences. The story is described as being edgy, but family-friendly. The story follows an orphaned 10-year-old who goes to live on a farm with his uncle. As their relationship grows strained, he befriends the town's gas station owner, a former pro hockey player, and the pair escape into a private fantasy world of superheroes and alien invaders.

Academy Awarded John Dykstra, who served as a special effects supervisor on many great projects ever since has finally aligned to make his first feature – Variety reportedly revealed that he just signed on to direct a film named Super Zero, an adaptation of the graphic novel Tales From the Farm, by Jeff Lemire.

John Carr has written a script, and Steven Gilder and Alec Chorches are producing.

At San Diego Convention Center on this July they plan to seize Comic-Con occasion to attract public attention to Super Zero project. Producer Gilder said that Lemire and the publisher, Top Shelf Productions, therefore will make an appearance.

Furthermore, Gilder added the producers aim:

to have a strong hard push in thesenext weeks, either locking cast and/or getting commitments from financing and/or distributors, (then) going to the studios with a package.”

Presumably Super Zero will be live action with extensive vfx sequences.

Best known for his extensive work as a visual effects supervisor, John Dykstra is taking a turn to directing with, reported by Variety , an adaptation of Jeff Lemire's "Essex County" comic book, to be titled Super Zero . Lemire's work, beginning with a collection entitled "Tales From the Farm," tells the tale of Lester, a 10-year old who winds up living on his uncle's farm after losing his parents, retreating to a world of fantasy and childhood imagination. John Carr has adapted Lemire's work into a screenplay which will be developed by Rhythm and Hues, a VFX company recently responsible for work on X-Men: First Class .
