Sébastien Vaniček's Evil Dead Burn is preparing to enter production in New Zealand, and Variety reports that Dune: Part Two's Souheila Yacoub is set to play the lead role.

Yacoub had a small, but memorable supporting part in Denis Villeneuve's sequel as Fremen warrior Shishakli, who sacrifices her life to give her people time to escape a Harkonnen attack.

Vaniček made his feature directorial debut with Vermin/Vermine, aka Infested, which focused on the residents of a rundown French apartment building attempting to survive when an army of venomous, rapidly reproducing spiders invade.

The movie garnered a lot of acclaim, and won Best Picture and Best Director in its North American premiere at Fantastic Fest. It was also invited to the Sitges Film Festival, where it earned a nomination for Best Motion Picture and won a Special Jury Prize.

Sébastien Vaniček, the up-and-coming French director who broke through in a major way with his feature debut “Vermines” (“Infested”), is getting ready to start filming the next Evil Dead installment in New Zealand with “Dune: Part Two” star Souheila Yacoub in the lead role.

Produced by longtime franchise producer Rob Tapert and executive produced by series creator and horror icon Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, the “Evil Dead” movie that Vaniček is directing is one of the two sequels in the works. The film will be distributed internationally by Warner Bros. Pictures and Sony, while Studiocanal will be distributing in France and the U.K.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have said that they’d rather die along with their entire families than make another puppet movie like Team America: World Police. But, as Bruce Campbell knows well, the dead aren’t always free from puppetry.

In 2004, the creators of South Park released their feature-length satire of American politics and over-the-top action movies performed entirely by a massive cast of custom-made marionettes. Team America: World Police won no awards, broke no box office records and, thankfully for Parker and Stone, spawned no sequels, but the hilarious, unique and preposterously profane action-comedy-musical quickly became a cult-classic — and, not to mention, it contains some of the finest, catchiest and filthiest show tunes that Parker and Stone ever performed.

The 80s were a time when country music and a type of hero born of the good ol boy class that came into his own. This could be seen in shows like The Dukes of Hazzard, Bj and The Bear, as well as movies like Any Which Way But Loose and Smokey and the Bandit. They were a time of what would be considered fun action films and TV. Again, this was personified in shows where usually no one got seriously hurt, like The A-Team. The bad guys went to the same shooting school as your friendly neighborhood Stormtroopers. But, one TV show that would personify this “nobody better get hurt” adventure series was The Fall Guy.

WB has had a rough go of it recently. The company isn’t going under, of course, but they’ve had some pretty big flops during 2024 and 2025. In spite of all that, David Zaslav and quite a few other executives are getting big raises.

Per Variety, Zaslav’s pay package is now at $51.9 million dollars which is about a four percent increase from the previous year. A four percent raise doesn’t seem like a lot, but when you make $49.7 million dollars, which was Zaslav’s total pay package in 2023, four percent amounts to millions of dollars.

From Variety, “Zaslav had a 2023 pay package worth $49.7 million, up 26.5% from the year prior. Zaslav’s compensation totaled $39.3 million in 2022, after he received an astonishing $246.6 million (which included $203 million in stock-option grants) in 2021.

For 2024, Zaslav’s base salary was $3 million. He received stock awards worth $23.1 million, bonus compensation of $23.9 million and “all other” compensation of $1.9 million.

In the nineties, Hollywood still hadn’t quite figured out how to make superhero movies. Sure, the Batman films were successful, but they were divisive among comic book fans, especially once the Joel Schumacher films, with their bat nipples, hit theaters. With big superhero properties mostly tied up in legal limbo, Hollywood studios started looking at the pulp heroes of the thirties, hoping to make their next huge superhero franchise. The Phantom, which came out in 1996, was one such film.

On the surface, this idea makes a certain amount of sense. The Indiana Jones movies were highly inspired by pulp novels and broke box office records. The first attempt to make this kind of movie was Universal’s The Shadow in 1994, but it didn’t do as well as expected. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav received a 2024 compensation package worth $51.9 million, compared with $49.7 million in 2023 and $39.3 million in 2022 when the Discovery-WarnerMedia merger closed.

The entertainment conglomerate disclosed latest pay details for its top executives in a regulatory filing on Friday.

Zaslav’s compensation increase of 4 percent was driven by higher non-equity incentive plan pay, up from $22.0 million to $23.9 million, and slightly higher stock awards ($23.1 million) and “other” compensation ($1.9 million).

Earlier in the morning, Wbd had unveiled that John Malone would move to the role of chair emeritus, staying “actively involved.”

Zaslav’s 2023 rise in compensation had been due in part to a decision by Wbd to change its executive compensation plan to focus on cash flow, rather than its stock price. In 2023, Wbd’s free cash flow rose in part due to the Hollywood strikes, which shut down productions for months.

Robert Trebor, who portrayed the serial killer known as the Son of Sam in a CBS telefilm and the scheming merchant Salmoneus on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and its sister series, Xena: Warrior Princess, has died. He was 71.

Trebor died March 11 at Los Angeles Medical Center of sepsis, his wife, Deirdre Hennings, told The Hollywood Reporter. He was diagnosed with leukemia in 2012 and had a stem-cell transplant a year later, she said.

I’m a sucker for a good vampire film, whether it features a sexy vampire like Bram Stoker’s Dracula or a nasty one like 30 Days of Night. But one of my personal favorite tales about bloodsuckers is an underrated 2010 release by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig titled Daybreakers. Boasting an all-star cast and an interesting twist on vampire lore, it didn’t make waves upon initial release. And yet, I still find myself banging the proverbial drum for this film, especially today, because the movie is now streaming for free on Vizio WatchFree+.

Daybreakers takes place in 2019 (ten years in the future upon the film’s initial release) where a plague has transformed a majority of the human population into vampires. But without any humans from which to feed, the vampires are now facing a food crisis. Ethan Hawke plays Edward Dalton, a hematologist working on creating a blood substitute to save humanity.

Bubba Ho-Tep is a silly good time. It’s an unorthodox take on genre cinema that features a great showing from Bruce Campbell as an aging, undead Elvis. I like the film (and Campbell) so much that I once dedicated an installment of the Dread Central newsletter, The Harbinger, to the Don Coscarelli-directed effort. Though the picture has its fans, I think it’s actually a bit underrated. However, the feature has at least one high-profile fan. During a recent look at Mike Flanagan’s Letterbox profile, I learned that the Absentia director is also a die-hard Bubba Ho-Tep enthusiast.

The season 3 finale of Invincible hit last Thursday, and with no new episode today, Prime Video and creator Robert Kirkman are already teasing what fans can expect from the officially in-development fourth season.

Mark Grayson very nearly met his end at the hands of the bloodthirsty (even for a Viltrumite) villain known as Conquest, but he's going to come up against an even tougher opponent in season 4: Grand Regent Thragg.

The third season of Invincible, Prime Video's adaptation of Robert Kirkman's expansive superhero comic, wrapped up the other week in rather spectacular fashion. Fans had to wait an eternity between seasons 1 of the 2, but Kirkman and company have promised quicker turnarounds going forward. A name has not been revealed, but fans can now start speculating as to who is playing the Viltrumite. Director Sam Raimi and actor Bruce Campbell have worked on four "Evil Dead" film and TV projects together. I needn't reiterate "The Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn," as the cultists know them well. However, something happened after Raimi and Campbell made "Army of Darkness" in 1992, completing Ash's arc in the process. That film was distributed by Universal, which positioned it to gain a crossover audience. Sadly, though, it didn't do well at the box office, but became a massive cult hit. It was deeply beloved by many, eventually attaining the same canonized status as its immediate forebear.

In his autobiography "If Chins Could Kill," Campbell laid out the difference between a "cult film" and a "blockbuster." A blockbuster is a million people seeing a film 10 times, and a cult film is 10 people seeing a film a million times.

One can indeed watch each installment in Sam Raimi's celebrated "Evil Dead" franchise in the order of their release, but it might not help keep the continuity clear. The actual narrative throughline of the "Evil Dead" movies is a little hazy throughout, and each new movie might serve as a soft reboot of the one that came before it. The ending of one movie doesn't clearly link to the next, and the main character of Ash (Bruce Campbell) doesn't seem to learn or grow from his experiences. Indeed, Ash only appears to get dumber and more selfish with every outing. The already-weak continuity then becomes especially messy when one starts factoring in director's edits and alternate endings that only sort of count toward the franchise's central canon. One can also, if they were ambitious, include short films that Sam Raimi made when he was a teenager. He is an iconoclast.

If you thought the biggest surprise of Invincible Season 3 was how much damage Mark Grayson could take before his bones just gave up, think again. The post-credits scene of the finale has fans spiraling into wild theories, rewatching episodes for clues, and, let’s be honest, probably screaming into their pillows.

Why? Because Damien Darkblood is back, and he’s in Hell. Not only that, but he’s having a casual chat with Satan himself about possibly dragging Mark down with him.

It turns Invincible into something more than just a faithful adaptation, it’s now a playground where even longtime fans have no idea what’s coming next.
