Its Time We Talk About Modern Family’s Problematic Treatment of TV’s Favorite Gay Couple – Mitch and Cam
Image
When Modern Family premiered in 2009, Mitch and Cam were pioneering network TV’s first prominent gay couple raising a child. At that time, LGBTQ representation was rare, which made their presence felt revolting, a sign of shifting norms. But rewatching the show today, their depiction raises uncomfortable thoughts.

While the series supported LGBTQ+ visibility, it somewhat did so through a lens of subtle homophobia, reducing Mitch and Cam to stereotypes rather than letting them evolve as authentically as the straight couples.

Unlike the rest of the couples, Mitch and Cam’s relationship was frequently reduced to humor rooted in tired tropes rather than authentic character development through most of the seasons.

How were they in a Stereotype Trap? A still of Mitch and Cam from Modern Family.Credits: ABC.

From the series few dynamics can be analysed to understand the Stereotypical setting Mitch and Cam’s relationship is portrayed in.

Ariel Winter Says Body Shaming While Starring In ‘Modern Family’ “Totally Damaged My Self-Esteem”
Image
Ariel Winter is getting real about how it was growing up in front of the cameras, starring in Modern Family.

The young star landed the role of Alex Dunphy at just 11 years old, and as she got older, she faced scrutiny over her body with mean comments on social media and in the press.

“That was a major part of my teenage years,” she told People. “It was just everywhere. It was every headline I read about myself, like, grown people writing articles about me saying how I looked terrible or pregnant or like a fat slut. I mean, I was 14. It totally damaged my self-esteem.”

Winter played the daughter of Julie Bowen’s Claire and Ty Burrell’s Phil in the ABC comedy that ran for 11 seasons and ended in 2020. Facing the body shaming on social media was not easy for Winter as comments about her weight gain grew.

Revenge of the Remakes: Horror Reboots That Actually Worked
Image
Horror remakes get a bad rap – and let’s be honest, they often deserve it. For every clever reimagining, we’ve sat through a dozen limp reboots that sucked the life (and the scares) right out of the original. But sometimes, a remake comes along that doesn’t just cash in on nostalgia; it sharpens, reinvents, or even surpasses the source material.

With fresh remakes like Wolf Man (2025) and Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Frankenstein reboot lighting up horror headlines, now’s the perfect time to revisit the remakes that proved this subgenre can deliver more than lazy copy-paste thrills. Here’s our list of horror reboots and remakes that earned their place in the genre’s blood-soaked hall of fame.

Horror Remakes That Actually Worked The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter’s The Thing often gets cited as one of the best horror remakes ever made… and for good reason. While...

One Underrated ‘Modern Family’ Star Who Faced the Same Unfair Fate as Friends’ Courteney Cox
Image
Award shows don’t always get it right, and sometimes, they miss big. Just ask Courteney Cox. While Friends turned its entire cast into global superstars, Cox remained the only main star who was never even nominated for an Emmy. Despite anchoring some of the show’s most iconic moments, her portrayal of Monica Geller was consistently overlooked while her co-stars racked up accolades.

It’s a frustrating pattern that TV fans know all too well. In ensemble comedies, there’s always that one actor who gives everything, shapes the show’s heart, and still doesn’t get their due. A legendary character from Modern Family found himself in the same bittersweet situation.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson: the unsung hero of ‘Modern Family’

While Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet received widespread recognition for their roles, Jesse Tyler Ferguson quietly became one of Modern Family’s most reliable sources of humor.

'Give Her a Special Award': Modern Family Star Recalls Unforgettable Background Actor Who Left Him Awestruck
Image
Jesse Tyler Ferguson was one of the stars of Modern Family. But he has recently given a shout-out to someone who didn't even make it into the show's credits.

According to Ferguson, he was struck by a video he saw of one of the show's background actors. He elaborated on his Dinner's on Me podcast alongside guest Jane Lynch. "I guess there's some background actor on Modern Family who - it's so funny. I love it so much - who's at a table in the background," he said. "And I guess they were probably given instruction to like, you know, have a conversation, like make it look natural, but she's not sitting at a table with anyone."

"But she must've [been] like, 'Well, I guess that's what they told me to do.' She's talking to thin air right behind me," Ferguson recalled. "Like it's right off my, like my left shoulder,...

“It was what it was”: Alan Tudyk Is Right on Why ‘Firefly’ Got Canceled After Season 1 Despite Calling It the Greatest TV Show
Image
Nathan Fillion was unhappy about Firefly cancellation, but it is doubtful whether he campaigned for a revival series as much as Alan Tudyk. The actor played Hoban “Wash” Washburne in the series, who was the pilot of the Serenity ship. Tudyk considers Joss Whedon’s cowboy space drama as one of the greatest television series ever.

Tudyk opened up about the cancellation of the series last year during an interview, where he refused to put the entire blame on Fox. It is true that the network rushed its decision to cancel the series after just one series, however, the ratings did not help the case of the series.

Fillion played Malcolm Reynolds, a former sergeant-turned-captain of the Serenity. He brings together a group of misfits as his crew. The adventures of Mal and his crew will get anyone hooked on the single-season run of this series.

“I’m disgusted”: ‘Modern Family’ Co-creator Didn’t Shy Away From Calling Out Fox Over Its Most Demented Association
Image
Modern Family has not shied away from getting political when it directly impacts the lives of its characters. The show wrote California’s legalization of gay marriage into the series, with an episode centered on Mitchell and Cameron proposing and eventually getting married. However, the politics of the creators did not stop there.

Co-creator Steven Levitan was extremely vocal about President Donald Trump’s detention of children of immigrants during his first term. It hit closer to home when Fox News’ presenter and noted conservative commentator Laura Ingraham called the detention centers ‘summer camps’ for children. Modern Family was co-produced by 20th Century Fox Television.

Why the Face: Ty Burrell’s Greatest ‘Modern Family’ Line Was From ‘Firefly’ Actor Who Didn’t Get the Part
Image
If you are a Modern Family fan, you might already know the classic Phil Dunphy line, “Wtf: Why the Face?” His awkward attempt at being the “cool dad” quickly became a TV classic. It’s awkward, goofy, and undeniably Phil. But did you know that the line wasn’t actually written by the show’s creators? And it wasn’t even Ty Burrell who first delivered it.

That’s right, the line came from a “very funny actor,” the actor from the hit show Firefly. This actor didn’t get the part of Phil Dunphy but gave us the line that made us all laugh and cringe simultaneously. Here’s how a little improv led to one of Modern Family’s most unforgettable lines.

“That would have been terrible”: I Love Matt LeBlanc but There’s No Way He Could’ve Replaced Ty Burrell in Modern Family
Image
There can only be one Phil Dunphy! And that man is Ty Burrell. If you believe otherwise, you’ve “gotta fix that step.” At least, that’s what Claire’s goofy yet earnest husband would tell you during his Modern Family run.

These days, you wouldn’t find Burrell making Emmy-approved waves on TV. After all, sources suggest he’s put his acting career on hold to play out the ‘cool dad’ persona in real life, courtesy of his daughters Gretchen and Frances. God bless him.

There are certain scenes from all the footage that has been released about the Thunderbolts* that have fans wondering why a few particular shots in the trailer look off. While some have chalked this up to bad framing, others believe that Marvel is up to its old tricks, erasing characters that ought to be there so as to not reveal them too early.

Given the lineup of the Thunderbolts* and who the characters will be going up against, it is likely that there could be some heavy hitters lurking behind the CGI shots. Alternatively, there could be some enhanced individuals who could find themselves in league with the likes of Yelena, Bucky, and John Walker.

“That’s a place where comedies go to die”: Sofia Vergara’s ‘Modern Family’ Was Born Out of Pure Rage Against 1 Ruthless Studio
Image
Behind every great piece of art, there’s usually a story of struggle, rejection, or, in the case of Modern Family, it was pure, unfiltered frustration. One of the best sitcoms of our times wasn’t just a happy accident, it was born from the simmering rage of its creators.

But from this anger, they struck gold and redefined family comedy. With an unforgettable ensemble that featured Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, and more, the show turned out to be a cultural phenomenon. So, let’s dive into how the sitcom was born and what made it a game-changer.

Claire Would’ve Been Crucified by Fans if ‘Modern Family’ Made Her Behave Like Phil Did Around Sofia Vergara’s Gloria
Image
When ABC show Modern Family first hit screens in 2009, it quickly became one of TV’s most beloved sitcoms, thanks to its progressive takes and hilarious characters. At the center of the comedy was Phil Dunphy, the goofy, lovable father. One of the running gags throughout the series was his infatuation with his stepmother-in-law, Gloria Pritchett.

Phil’s constant, often cringeworthy admiration for Gloria was meant to be funny. But looking back, it’s hard to ignore the fact that if Claire Dunphy had behaved the same way, the fanbase would have been quick to turn on her.

“A myth that needs to be destroyed”: Andre Braugher Wanted Cop Shows to Get One Thing Right That Brooklyn Nine-Nine Tried…and Failed
Image
Andre Braugher, a man who spent much of his career playing cops, learned from his experience that cop shows needed to stop feeding audiences the myth that “good cops” breaking the law is somehow noble. The idea that a well-intentioned officer can bend the rules for the “greater good” is a Hollywood staple, one that Brooklyn Nine-Nine tried to challenge but ultimately fumbled.

To its credit, B99 made active efforts to address police misconduct, particularly in later seasons. It introduced storylines about racial profiling and systemic corruption and even had Rosa quit the force in protest. But here’s why it still didn’t work!

‘It has influenced every film about war since’: Before ‘Modern Family,’ Ty Burrell Starred in the Greatest War Movie That Turns 24 This Year

Long before Ty Burrell became a household name as the lovable Phil Dunphy on Modern Family, he appeared in one of Ridley Scott’s war movies. He starred in one of the most influential war movies of the past two decades. It marked one of his earliest appearances in a movie, setting the stage for his later fame.

Based on the 1999 non-fiction bestseller, the movie tells the harrowing story of the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, where U.S. military forces faced disastrous setbacks in Somalia. At this point, you might have already guessed the movie’s name. Yes, Burrell appeared in Ridley Scott’s 2001 hit, Black Hawk Down, a landmark movie that continues to redefine the war movie genre.

'I Really Flopped': Ty Burrell Recalls His 'Unfunny' Modern Family Audition
Image
Ty Burrell won two Emmys for his performance in TV's Modern Family. He recalled how farfetched this achievement seemed when he auditioned for the show; he failed at the get-go, and the studio executives were hardly impressed.

Ty Burrell faced an uphill battle before he landed his role in Modern Family; he was almost dropped from consideration after leaving ABC executives unimpressed. "I really flopped the first test," he revealed on the Dinner's on Me podcast. Admitting his initial audition was too "stiff", he added the studio heads were scathing with their feedback. "'He's not funny,'" he recalled one comment. It was fortunate that series creators Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan were on Burrell's corner. They developed the character of Phil Dunphy while thinking of Burrell. He still had to convince the creative heads, however.

‘Having no real Pda was a great call then’: Sofia Vergara and Ed O’Neill Almost Never Kissed in ‘Modern Family’ and That Was Kinda Genius
Image
Modern Family is known for pushing boundaries and redefining family relationships on television, but one of its most impactful choices was how it handled public displays of affection. While the show highlighted various types of relationships, from affectionate Claire and Phil to quirky and reserved Jay and Gloria, to same-sex couple Cam and Mitch— the show’s portrayal of physical affection was quite striking.

The creators cleverly downplayed the Pda between not only Jay and Gloria but also Cam and Mitch. The show’s decision to keep the physical affection minimal in comparison to the straight couple was both a strategic and thoughtful move, especially for its time.

“We definitely shoot two different shows”: ‘Modern Family’ Success Is a Miracle When Its Co-creators Refused to Be Friends After First Season
Image
Modern Family, no doubt, stands as one of the most successful sitcoms of the past decade, drawing audiences back for multiple rewatches. The key to this success lies in the unique and occasional collaboration between its co-creators, Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan. Their innovative partnership has been instrumental in shaping the show’s exceptional success.

Despite the show’s growing popularity, the duo’s partnership had not always been smooth. In fact, their working relationship has been described as more of a distant agreement than traditional creative collaboration. That somehow worked well for the show’s long success.

10 Actors You Didn’t Know Have Made a Cameo Appearance in ‘Modern Family’

Modern Family vs Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Ty Burrell Was Phenomenal but I’m Still Convinced Andre Braugher Deserved the Emmy More as Captain Holt
Image
Winning an Emmy doesn’t just depend on talent, it also depends on strategy. Actors only get to submit a single episode to represent their entire performance, meaning one incredible moment might win it all, while a consistently brilliant performance gets overlooked.

Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy in Modern Family and Andre Braugher as Captain Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Both are legendary in their own right, Burrell’s lovable goofball dad, while Braugher’s deadpan delivery couldn’t be polar opposite from each other, and thus pitting them against each other sounds criminal, but that is what happened in the year 2014.

‘His role was more difficult than mine’: Why Bryan Cranston Felt Jon Hamm Deserved the Emmy More Than Him After Reigning the Awards With Breaking Bad
Image
Actor Bryan Cranston is best known for his role as Walter White in the hit crime-drama series Breaking Bad. The series ran for five seasons and received critical acclaim. During this period, Cranston dominated the awards scene, winning multiple Best Actor Emmys throughout the show’s five-season run.

Cranston’s streak at the Emmys is even more impressive when looking at the other nominees he was up against, with Jon Hamm of Mad Men being his most serious challenger. In an interview, Cranston spoke about beating Hamm for the award several times and admitted the latter’s role was much harder. Here is what Cranston had to say about Hamm’s Mad Men role.

“It’s kinda crazy they got an actor of that caliber”: Modern Family’s Wildest Cameo Was in Season 1 – A Marvel Star With 2 Oscar Nods, His Character Deserves a Spinoff
Image
In the world of sitcoms, only a few shows have managed to completely captivate the audience with their humour and sarcastic jabs. One such show was Modern Family, which can easily find its spot in the top three of every comedy fan. It presented a stellar ensemble out in the open and, just like any other show, also featured some of the most famous faces from Hollywood.

But one of the most unexpected appearances happened all the way back in Season 1, long before it became a comedy juggernaut. The show featured none other than Edward Norton, known for his intense performances in Fight Club, American History X and Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk. The role he played in the show was also a surprising delight for his fans.

Edward Norton’s cameo in Modern Family deserved its own spinoff.

“Gloria helped Jay learn and grow”: Sofia Vergara’s Gloria Gets a Lot of Hate, but ‘Modern Family’ Fans Ignore She Made Jay a Better Father Than Phil
Image
In the hit sitcom Modern Family, Jay Pritchett is known for his typical tough and patriarchal attributes, brought up with the values of family and masculinity. However, fans were in for a pleasant surprise as they saw his character arc undergo a complete shift from being someone with traditional values to a person with soft vulnerability with more acceptable traits.

It’s actually his marriage to Gloria Pritchett, that transforms him into a more empathetic and emotionally open father. While Gloria’s character had often been the subject of criticism, her influence on Jay’s development can not be understated. In fact, it’s Gloria who helps Jay become a better father, even surpassing Phil Dunphy in terms of emotional depth.

‘Cam was legitimately a bad person’: I’m Glad the ‘Modern Family’ Spinoff Didn’t Happen After the Original Show Ignored His Worst Flaw
Image
For 11 seasons, Modern Family won over the audience with its hilarious characters and touching moments. Among them was Cameron Tucker, the bubbly, over-the-top partner to Mitchell Pritchett. Cam was beloved for his larger-than-life personality, his love for drama, and his fun antics.

However, as the series progressed, it became increasingly clear that beneath Cam’s bubbly, comedic exterior, there was a darker, more toxic side to his personality. Unfortunately, Modern Family often ignored these flaws, leaving them unresolved, and that’s why I’m relieved that the proposed Modern Family spinoff never saw the light of the day.

Modern Family‘s Cam was way too toxic that the show rarely addressed

Cam’s (Eric Stonestreet) toxic traits weren’t always obvious at first in Modern Family. He was charming, enthusiastic, and often the life of the party. But his tendency to...

“The scariest person I’ve worked with”: Julie Bowen Had the Most Bizarre Thing to Say About ‘Modern Family’ Co-Star Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy

Remember the famous quote by a certain regional manager of a mid-ranged paper company, “Would I rather be feared or loved? Easy. Both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.” This might actually be true for Ty Burrell! Here is why!

Claire and Phil are the ultimate cool parents, effortlessly fun and downright awesome. Their chemistry is so natural, it practically jumped off the screen.

The duo’s real-life bond as friends and actors clearly played a big role. In fact, Bowen once admitted that she was scared of how insanely talented Ty Burrell truly is!

“Beautiful actresses are not funny”: Ty Burrell Is a National Treasure for Defending Julie Bowen’s Emmy Win in ‘Modern Family’ Like True Phil Dunphy

Ty Burrell is one of the most beloved comic actors in recent years, and there’s a reason behind that. The actor’s breakout performance in Modern Family has been winning hearts since 2009 and continues to draw new fans even now.

In fact, his onscreen chemistry with Julie Bowen, who played his wife in the series and won an Emmy for it, was so good that people couldn’t get enough of them. Inevitably, he didn’t take it so well when his co-star’s award win was questioned and degraded by the media.

It’s pretty common in hit TV shows or sitcoms for the actor everyone expected to skyrocket to fame to surprisingly fade from the spotlight. Take Euphoria, for example, many thought Alexa Demie was destined for long-term stardom, yet it was Sydney Sweeney who ended up stealing the spotlight.

The same goes for Ty Burrell from Modern Family. While he’s a comedy genius who’s clearly proven his acting skills, he’s rarely ventured beyond comedic roles and has largely stayed out of the spotlight in recent years. “Gloria would’ve given her daughter low self-esteem”: Sofia Vergara Was a Bad Mother in ‘Modern Family’ and I’m Glad She Didn’t Have a Daughter

Modern Family is undoubtedly the most beloved sitcom of all time, known for its unique mockumentary style comedy and diverse characters. One of the most iconic figures in the show is Gloria Pritchett. Known for her bold personality, striking beauty, and unwavering protectiveness over her family, Gloria’s character is essential to the show’s success and appeal.

While Gloria brought humor and warmth to the series, her parenting style raised concern, especially when it came to her son, Manny. “It just feels very out of place”: ‘Modern Family’ Went Out of Its Way to Keep Phil Dunphy’s Mom Hidden When Frank Had a Dedicated Episode

Modern Family, ABC’s acclaimed sitcom that ran for 11 seasons, is celebrated for its relatable humor and complex family dynamics.
