In the first episode of Hulu’s Under the Bridge, Reena Virk is trying to fit in with a new group of friends. Her way of bonding? Playing The Notorious B.I.G.’s 1997 opus Life After Death.
That album — his second — was released 16 days after the rap icon was gunned down to death. Virk, played by Vritika Gupta, jumps on the bed as she and other teenage girls rap the lyrics to “Kick in the Door.” In the second episode of the scripted series following the murder of the 14-year-old Indian-Canadian teen, the lyrical mastermind shows up again when Virk is invited to a vigil her classmates hold in honor of the future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. The teens live in the suburban municipality located on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.
The eight episodes of Under the Bridge not only tell the story of Virk, but also weave in The Notorious B.

Pam Grier was a guest this week on The Jennifer Hudson Show, and revealed there are big plans afoot for her legendary 1974 Blaxploitation classic, Foxy Brown.
“We’re going to be doing Foxy Brown also as a musical,” Grier announced, but didn’t provide many details. She also shared that a studio is producing a seven-episode limited series based on her 2010 memoir, Foxy: My Life in Three Acts.
The series will detail her relationships with basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the comedians Freddie Prinze and Richard Pryor.
“It can’t be a seven-hour movie, but it’s going to be a [limited] series like the series I’m promoting today, Them, so it’ll be seven episodes, shot like a film,” the actress said.
Foxy Brown was part of a Blaxploitation trilogy, sandwiched between Coffy and Jackie Brown.

Foxy Brown may be the meanest chick in town and Coffy the baddest one-chick hit squad that ever hit it, but Pam Grier is one of the most down-to-earth actresses on the planet. Still going 50 years into her career, Grier has worked with some premiere directors, most of whom wanted to collaborate because they were fans of her iconic work in the ‘70s. Take John Carpenter and Quentin Tarantino, for example, who directed Grier in 1996’s Escape from L.A. and the next year’s Jackie Brown, respectively. But who does Pam Grier prefer when it comes to these genre-loving filmmakers? Oh, she knows what’s goin’ down!
Comparing both John Carpenter and Quentin Tarantino, Pam Grier said, “Quentin is more reality, John is fantasy. Because he got me to play Hershe Las Palmas, where I was a female actor playing a man who becomes a woman,” referring to her character in Escape from L.A.,...

From Geena Davis and Jamie Lee Curtis, to blaxploitation royalty Pam Grier; Joe Dante and Roland Emmerich, to genre legend Peter Hyams topping the bill – 2024’s Forbidden Worlds Film Festival promises the biggest (and maddest) year yet for genre fans in the South West.
Firing into its third year of taking over arguably Bristol’s best cinema screen – the abandoned IMAX at Bristol Aquarium, Forbidden Worlds has never been one to cater to the masses. It’s a true one-screen wonder of a festival, promising the most unusual and sought-after of cinematic treats; big, mad, weird shit projected large and loud, for three straight days.
For example, while 2024’s edition promises an explosive opening night with a 30th anniversary screening of none other than Keanu Reeves action classic The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down (otherwise known as Speed), look as far as the following day’s line-up and you’ll...

Francis Ford Coppola may very well be the greatest American filmmaker. The Godfather, an epic three-motion-picture coup, redefined gangster movies and film; Apocalypse Now remains the greatest Vietnam War allegory ever made; Bram Stoker’s Dracula is perched atop most lists of horror classics. Coppola hit every genre, created art for art’s sake, and still managed to touch the pulse of moviegoers’ needs, desires, and fantasies.
More than anything, Coppola pursues innovation. This was exemplified in Distant Vision, which presented live cinema, performed twice, broadcast live to select screening rooms in 2015 and 2016, and not included in the list. The 25-minute film was made with students, staff, and teachers at UCLA, Coppola’s alma mater.
Coppola learned his trade at the “Roger Corman Film Academy,” where fresh filmmakers graduated by finishing movies quickly with pocket change for funding. By the time Coppola sandwiched the 1974 paranoid masterpiece The Conversation between The Godfather and The Godfather,...

Revenge! They say it’s best served cold, but sometimes a giant steaming pile of revenge can be really satisfying. The female revenge story is a subgenre that emerged from the old exploitation film days. The woman who is wronged in some way, usually by evil men, who then has to work her way back to enact revenge upon her tormentors always seems to end satisfyingly as they get their comeuppance. Let’s check out some of the best female revenge films where badass women put their enemies in their place.

What would Hollywood be without a good ole Blaxploitation film? And now that “They Cloned Tyrone” has hit Netflix screens, conversations about the Blaxploitation movies that crawled so that “They Cloned Tyrone” could pimp walk have come to the forefront.
Juel Taylor’s film welcomes watchers to The Glen, a normal, everyday neighborhood where its predominately Black residents live out their lives shopping, going to church and enjoying the fruits of their labor. However, beneath the surface, but right in front of their eyes, the government is executing a plot to keep the community in an endless cycle of unhealthy behavior that ultimately blocks them from mental and financial wellness.
Like many Blaxploitation films, “They Cloned Tyrone” creatively calls out and highlights the systemic issues Black community faces while also celebrating Black culture and Black people’s perseverance.

Since hip-hop's inception, the culture has been a male-dominated space. Women have had to fight for their right to exist alongside their male peers, exercise autonomy over their bodies, and rap without restrictions. It's no secret that the culture of hip-hop is inherently fueled by misogyny and patriarchy; female rappers have been ostracized, while their male counterparts stand to gain. But in recent years, an influx of women rappers have emerged, ushering in a resurgence of sexually explicit lyrics that have jolted mainstream music, social media, and even politics. Yes, women in music have always talked about their sexual prowess; women rappers are simply continuing a long and strong tradition of Black women loudly reclaiming their own sexuality, most notably under the umbrella of "pussy rap."

Growing up in the Bay Area, Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper, now known to fans as Saweetie, listened to 106.1 Kmel and Wild 949 on her drive to school with her dad every morning. And like clockwork, Turf Talk's "It's a Slumper," her dad's favorite song, could be heard blasting from the 808 speakers in the trunk as they made their way across the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge. At home, the family computer was riddled with viruses, thanks to her LimeWire downloads of Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma's mixtapes. This was Saweetie's first introduction to hip-hop.

Turn on “They Cloned Tyrone” at a random moment and you could be forgiven for thinking you were watching a faithful remake of a Blaxploitation classic. In one early scene, the old-school pimp Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx) struts through a sleazy motel wearing a suit whose ridiculousness is matched only by his haircut. ’70s funk blares in the background as he tries to convince his top earner Yo-Yo (Teyonah Paris) to keep turning tricks for him. As she explains that she’s ready to move onto bigger things, the dialogue could be ripped straight from “Coffy” or “Foxy Brown” — until she mentions Bitcoin.
Yo-Yo — who earned her nickname because she keeps coming back after threatening to leave — is convinced that the blockchain revolution is going to be the golden parachute that gets her out of sex work. Ignoring the holes in her financial logic, the scene is a perfect encapsulation...

Pap Chanel is ready to shock the world with her latest EP, "Paptivities." After a nearly two-year gap between 2021's "Pretty & Paid 2.0" and her new six-track project, released May 12, the rising rapper tells Popsugar why she took her time crafting "Paptivities" - and why the EP sounds vastly different from her previous releases. "On this project right here, every song sounds completely different," Chanel explains. "I have one song where I'm telling my fans all my business. I'm super excited for that one because people don't really get to hear transparency from artists. This is a record where I got really vulnerable and talked about the good, bad, and the ugly."
The record in question is the EP's opener, "Pap Stories," an introspective track where Chanel raps about everything from wearing "war wounds" to brushing off haters who doubted her. As promised, every other song on "Paptivities" adopts a different...

Her death was reported by Fox 13 Memphis and Wreg Memphis.

2012’s The Hunger Games was a major breakthrough for Jennifer Lawrence, but recent comments from the actress (who played Katniss Everdeen) are giving much more importance to the movie than it deserves.
In a new interview, Jennifer Lawrence said, “I remember when I was doing Hunger Games, nobody had ever put a woman in the lead of an action movie because it wouldn’t work — because we were told girls and boys can both identify with a male lead, but boys cannot identify with a female lead.” You can imagine how well this is sitting…

Netflix's latest original movie just dropped, and it's a family-friendly fantasy romp featuring Jason Momoa in horns and fangs, a bearded lighthouse keeper played by Kyle Chandler, and a whole host of fantastical elements that could only exist in a dream world. That is, after all, what "Slumberland" is about. The story follows Nemo (Marlow Barkley), a girl who disappears into the titular dream world in hopes of finding her dad (Chandler), who passed away.
Francis Lawrence's film is a riff on the famous "Little Nemo in Slumberland" comic strip by Winsor McCay, which appeared in newspapers in the early 1900s. One of the film's cast members, though, takes inspiration not just from the source material, but from a legendary on-screen icon of decades past. Nicki Minaj is getting real about her thoughts on the current state of music. The "Super Freaky Girl" rapper spoke to Jada Pinkett Smith for Interview Magazine's fall 2022 cover story, published on Oct. 18, where the two discussed motherhood, business, and the former being labeled as "sexy." However, Minaj couldn't help but also share her music opinions as well, particularly in regard to the sound artists are adopting now - and how it sounds all too familiar.
"They lose me when I'm seeing the person who they are trying to be like or sound like more than I'm seeing who they are."
"What I'm seeing now is that so many new artists are trying to become the person they looked up to instead of giving us a new flavor! And it's irking the crap out of me!" Minaj told Pinkett Smith. "I know I could see so much talent in some of the new artists,...

Sometimes it’s like they read your mind—or just notice upcoming releases as you do. Whatever the case, I’m thrilled that the release of Terence Davies’ Benediction played (I assume!) some part in a full retro on the Criterion Channel this June, sad as I know that package will make me and anybody else who comes within ten feet of it. It’s among a handful of career retrospectives: they’ve also set a 12-film Judy Garland series populated by Berkeley and Minnelli, ten from Ulrike Ottinger, and four by Billy Wilder. But maybe their most adventurous idea in some time is a huge microbudget collection ranging from Ulmer’s Detour to Joel Potrykus’ Buzzard, fellow success stories—Nolan, Linklater, Jarmusch, Jia Zhangke—spread about.

Megan Thee Stallion cleaned up at the Grammys, winning Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for “Savage” featuring Beyonce, as well as Best New Artist. That made this a landmark year for Megan, but also for female rappers in general. Check out the complete list of Grammy winners here.
She’s the first female rapper to win Best New Artist, depending on whether you count Lauryn Hill, who prevailed in 1999; she had won Best Rap Album for “The Score” as a member of The Fugees in 1997, but most of her nominations and wins in 1999 were as an R&b artist. Besides Megan, the only female artists to even be nominated in this category for predominantly rap music were Nicki Minaj (2012) and Iggy Azalea (2015).

Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers (with some help from Amber Ruffin) busted out the tea and crumpets as they broke down Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey on their respective late-night shows Monday, March 8th.
On The Late Show, tea kettle full of popcorn in hand, Colbert offered a comprehensive look at all the major moments, like when Markle said she had no idea what marrying into the Royal Family would be like because she didn’t look up her husband online.

Gordon Parks and Ernest Tidyman transformed the action film with this charismatic, Chandleresque Brooklyn private eye played by Richard Roundtree, the spiritual father to Foxy Brown, Cotton, The Hammer and many others. One of the first and slickest of the “blaxploitation” films, it was followed by two sequels, a TV series, a recent remake/spin-off starring Samuel L. Jackson (with a Roundtree cameo), and in the summer of 2019 a follow-up to that remake/spin-off featuring Jackson, Roundtree and Jessie T. Usher as three generations of Shaft men. Isaac Hayes’ title song won the Oscar.

Megan Thee Stallion had her first top-20 hit with “Hot Girl Summer” in 2019, but it was 2020 when she fully broke out in the public eye. Now the “Savage” star could make history at the Grammys: if she wins Best New Artist, she’ll be the first female rapper ever to do so.
Rappers of all genders have had trouble getting noticed in top categories given the recording academy’s long-held bias for adult contemporary artists over hip-hop. To date only three hip-hop acts have ever won Best New Artist: Arrested Development (1993), Macklemore and Ryan Lewis (2014) and Chance the Rapper (2017). Lauryn Hill also won in 1999; she incorporated rap and hip-hop into her music, but her breakthrough album that year was classified as R&b.

"I wasn't prepared for the entire world picking your body apart." Quiver Distribution has just released an official trailer for an indie documentary called Skin: A History of Nudity in the Movies, from Time Warp filmmaker Danny Wolf. The film, which hasn't played at any festivals, is described as the "definitive documentary on the history of nudity in feature films from the early silent days to the present." It features revealing interviews with actors including Pam Grier and Malcolm McDowell as well as directors like Peter Bogdanovich, Kevin Smith and Amy Heckerling. This almost sounds like a doc version of that cringey, creeper site Mr. Skin, but thankfully it's not that bad. Seems to be a way to discuss and examine the evolution of nudity in cinema. Worth a look. Official trailer (+ poster) ...

Bold, colorful, often playful strokes, grounded in character, culture, and period detail, wrapped in an effortless elegance and sense of taste — costume designer John Dunn is one of the most distinctive visual storytellers working in television today. Having come up in the New York film world, working with directors like Martin Scorsese (“Casino”), Jim Jarmusch (“Ghost Dog”), John Sayles (“City of Hope”), Julian Schnabel (“Basquiat”), Jonathan Glazer (“Birth”), and Todd Solondz (“Storytelling”), and after doing the pilot of “Mad Men” for Matthew Weiner, Dunn followed Scorsese into the world of peak TV with the HBO series “Vinyl” and “Boardwalk Empire” — demonstrating his knack for elegant period style and, like he did in “Casino,” capturing, celebrating, and commenting on the excessive of characters at the center of acute cultural moments. Prestige TV has all too often become synonymous with historical recreation, yet no artisan has used their craft to open the...

Twenty years later, it’s enjoying a renaissance — thanks to a recently-released Criterion Collection DVD/Blu-ray edition of this long out-of-print title — and a much-deserved reassessment of this scathing and insightful satire. But it’s not the only one that deserves a second look. Four years before “Bamboozled,” Lee made another idiosyncratic movie filled with big ideas. Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Kirby Dick’s documentaries often generate a lot of headlines around their explosive subjects — from the closeted gay politicians in “Outrage” to the rape victims in “The Invisible War” and the campus sexual assault survivors of “The Hunting Ground” — but nothing has generated more advance press than “On the Record.” Co-directed with longtime producing partner Amy Ziering, the searing overview of rape charges against hip hop mogul Russell Simmons lost its high-profile distribution partnership with Oprah Winfrey and Apple TV+ weeks ahead of the Sundance premiere. Reports suggest the talk show host had doubts on some of the movie’s allegations, possibly as a result of pressure from Simmons himself.

A new trailer for festive horror movie Hanukkah gives us a last look at horror legend Sig Haig, who sadly passed away in September at the age of 80.
Many years ago, Judah Lazarus (Haig), a serial murderer known as the Hanukiller, was shot dead right before he was about to sacrifice his young son Obadiah. In the intervening time, Obadiah disappeared without a trace, only to now resurface and take on his father’s bloody work as a force of warped morality, killing Jews not affording proper reverence to their faith. A number of twenty-somethings become targets of his wrath and, aided by a creepy rabbi who appears suspiciously knowledgeable about events, must embrace the teachings of the Torah if they want to survive the holidays.
